Queen Victoria had a large brood of 9 children. She had incredibly high expectations for her four sons and held them up in comparison with her saintly husband, Prince Albert. Their eldest son was destined to inherit the throne of the British Empire at the height of it’s power though he had to wait a long time to obtain it from his aging mother. While waiting in the wings her three younger sons all lived active lives. Two joined the military and traveled the world while the youngest was held back by the “royal disease”, hemophilia. Here are the stories of Queen Victoria’s four intriguing sons:
Edward VII, King of the UK and Commonwealth (1841-1910)
Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900)
Aurthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942)
Leopold, Duke of Albany (1853-1884)

Apparently, it was joked she might have been mistaken by some for a Golden Age Hollywood movie star (she does kind of resemble a couple of them in her young portraits). Her father George VI was a pretty striking dude as well when he was young (he almost looks superhero-like in a couple images I've seen).
Fun Fact : Leopold had the shortest life out of Victoria's children, but his daughter had the longest life out of all Victoria's grand children
I wonder if Leopold's daughter was a hemophilia carrier. Did she have any sons that were hemophiliac??
@@karenryder6317 yes, Princess Alice of Athlone was a carrier, since daughters of haemophiliacs typically are. She passed it to her son Rupert who died of the disease in a car accident.
Some of Victoria’s children apart from Leopold had the gene.
Victoria/Vicky: She did not have the gene because none of her sons or grandsons suffered from the illness.
Albert/Edward: He did not have the gene and did not suffer from the illness.
Alice: She had the gene and passed to her son Frittie (Friedrich) who died from a haemorrhage at 3 years
Alfred: Did not have the gene and did not suffer from the illness
Helena: She did not have the gene as far as we know, because her sons did not suffer and her daughters had no children.
Louise: It is unknown if she had the gene because she did not have children (although she has been linked to an illegitimate child)
Arthur: did not have haemophilia and did not suffer from symptoms
Leopold: Had haemophilia, and died of the illness, his grandson died of the illness as well.
Beatrice: had haemophilia and passed it to her children. Her son probably died of the illness after bleeding in an operation and her grandson died or the illness as well

As a matter of fact, those statements that "Edward, despite his comfortable life, cared about the poor" or "Edward pushed for public housing" or "Edward detested his nephew Kaiser Wilhelm's racism" were just left dangling. The narrator of this channel didnt offer a single incident, or historical speech, or a legal initiative behind them. This soup being served is so thin and cheap that its basically water. We ARE Being treated as if everybody listening is sub-average intelligence.

Arthur's eyes are so pale, even in old black and white photos. They must have been stunning in person.
Janet Seidlitz the entire family seems to have had huge and intensely bright blue eyes.
Tanja Winter Princess Beatrice (the current one, Fergie’s daughter) is the only one who has their face.
@@Patrick3183 they crancked up the equivalent of ISo today to make the eyes appear brighter . they looked no different than the basic looking german really.
My Grandfather (Scots/German) had light blue eyes. They looked "faded". They were very striking. Only one of his many Grandchildren inherited them (not me). But I did get one blue eye and one green eye.

Alexandra was not deaf. She starting losing her hearing later on in life. She was multi talented, beautiful, educated and spoke five languages fluently. She was charitable and a saint for putting up with a lowlife husband like that.

Today I found out what you shared in your comment: Victoria spoke so down of Albert (son) when he was born: that it didn't matter he would be king some day because he was still a very ugly child; "hedious nose... and no chin". Poor guy. I wonder what Freud would tell her if he had psychoanalyze her. They both lived in the same era. That just shows how diametrically behind she was. I think she was a rude spoiled brat to the limit. Never even heard the word empathy. No perspective in life. Not even for the good of her children.

The fact that he was able to live till the age of 30 and had 2 kids speak volume on how strong he was, despite his sickness.

Not an argument. How old are you? Back then, if you didn't want any more children, wouldn't you move into your own room too? What about the husband? Men have always protected & provided for their families in return for their intimate lives.
Arthur and his wife were people of their time, not ours. They grew up with a different understanding about marriage that was specific to their class. And for women, that meant marriage was a way to maintain their social position. Not all marriages were happy, obviously. But women knew they'd be miserable if they lost status and became middle class.

@Mi Pollard Charles had very little choice in the matter. At the time, it was unseemly to marry a divorced woman or a woman with any sort of a past. Charles and Diana was very much an arranged marriage. She may have been in love with him, but he was just fulfilling his duty.

@@laughoff6242 Kaiser Wilhelm II was Victoria's grandson & following Germany's defeat in WWI & Wilhelm's abdication, perhaps it was inevitable that there would be some Nazi sympathizers amongst his progeny, as well as amongst Victoria's other descendants who had been German princelings prior to Germany's defeat in WWI. After all, many of those descendants were still living in Germany when Hitler came to power.

I'm a history buff myself. I got a passion for history! And I'm a fan of the royal family! My favorite royals are Prince Harry 🤴 and Meghan Markle! Although I loved the queen too! Even though I'm American! Wish I could have met the queen in person! Many don't like Harry, Meghan and the new King Charles! Oh I forgot about Prince Andrew! I say let's all try to forgive, I do forgive myself. And with Harry and Meghan, I was never mad at them, never had a problem with them! Let's pray that they all get together, and be on good, friendly terms, forever!

A picture of Leopold's niece (Elizabeth of Hesse) was used in the 4 pictures of women he (unsuccessfully) courted. I just wanted to point out that because he never courted her. He helped raise her and her brother and sisters.

Alfred is my favourite of the four. He was born a British prince, was the first member of the British royal family to visit the distant colonies, survived an assassination attempt in Australia, married into the Russian imperial family and ended up a German sovereign duke.
There are two mistakes on the slide of Alfred's family. Young Alfred was the Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, not the Duke, as he died before his father. Also the picture labelled as Beatrice is actually her cousin Maud of Wales, wearing her crown as Queen consort of Norway.
You’re wrong there. Practically all the males went to India cause they liked to kill animals and most also went to Canada and Australia. Alfred was governor of Canada for awhile, I think, so would have been strange not to have gone.
If her cousin Maud was married to George V (if she was Princess of Wales she must have been married to the Prince) how was she also Queen Consort of Norway?
On rereading your comment, I am confused. Not about Maud; although I don’t know why she would have been referred to as Maud of Wales, I don’t know. But I become confused about the Alfred about whom you’re talking. I thought that it was Victoria’s son, but based on your description it can’t have been. @@loditx7706 The Alfred I refer to in my first paragraph is Queen Victoria's second son Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and later the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in Germany. The Alfred in the second paragraph is his son (young) Alfred, born Prince Alfred of Edinburgh (his father's title at the time) and who was, at the time of his death, heir to his father's dukedom of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha. Alfred junior was never Governor-General of Canada, that was Alfred senior's brother Arthur, Duke of Connaught.

I am thinking of the son of Leopoldo, Victoria’s youngest son and the only one who had hemophilia. He and his wife had a daughter and she was pregnant when Leopold died young. His son was born posthumously and inherited his father’s title, Duke of Albany. His name was Charles Edward. When the German title fell vacant Victoria (so looney) forced him to claim it. He was quite young and did so, giving up all lands and titles he was heir to in England. There is a biography of him here on TH-cam. He suffered a lot from WWI and WWII. During WWII he joined the Nazi party, partially to try and protect his property. There is a biography about him here on TH-cam. He had neither a happy, nor a good life, due to the action forced upon him by his grandmother.

3:10 WOW. You really got it wrong. Alexandra was NOT deaf. She spoke normally. Over the years she began to lose her hearing. She never lost the ability to speak. Victoria would NOT have married her son to a deaf girl who couldn’t speak. Sheeeeesh.
Despite not being fully deaf, she was eventually ostracized from social engagements due to her hereditary otosclerosis. She was however an extremely popular royal figure, and one of the first royals to adopt photography as a hobby. That last picture of Edward VII in front of a house was actually shot by her.
Clearly her skill was passed down to her descendants including the Queen, who maintains a large amount of home videos shot by herself and her husband. Her granddaughter-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge is also an avid photographer in her own right, and a number of publicity photos released by the couple were taken by her.

Queen Victoria and her eldest daughter Vicky, Crown Princess of Prussia (known to history as “Empress Frederick”) SCOURED Protestant Europe for the best and most suitable princess they could find to be Bertie’s wife. Of all the princesses in Europe, Alexandra was the one chosen. And her father wasn’t even king of Denmark YET when she was married! Her wonderful qualities got her where she was. And to say later on in the video that “she was accepting” of Bertie’s infidelity? She resigned herself to it, she never ACCEPTED it. It caused her endless heartache. The person who made this video really did Alexandra dirty here.
@@Patrick3183 actually she was on friendly terms with Lady Churchill even during the affair. She minded the other dalliances more, especially Alice Keppel. Rumor has it that she only allowed Keppel a few minutes to visit Edward's deathbed before forbidding her to attend the funeral.
Did not the Princess contract an illness soon after the wedding which severely limited her mobility and left her fatigued? Rheumatic fever or something similar?

What's ironic is that while Edward and Arthur were getting in scandals for their mistresses, I read recently that Prince Phillip on occasion got himself in trouble for the opposite reason: He would flirt with his wife Queen Elizabeth during public events and it angered some folks because they felt it was inappropriate.

They wouldn't be the first brothers to resemble each other but when you look at their clothes and hair styles, it's pretty clear they were supposed to look similar. Noble young men in Victorian society were all made to look equally smart.

Watching "Victoria and Abdul" made me angry at Bertie, but given his mom's treatment of him and his siblings, it is pretty understandable. Imagine being hated by your mother since birth, be blamed for your father's death, and be seen as a disappointment, and then watch your mom treat a foreign individual way better than you.
Not really, it was completely unfair for him to direct all his pint up hatred on someone who had nothing to do with the bad relationship between him and Victoria.

Victoria didn't hate Bertie since birth. She blamed him for Albert's death but her feelings warmed to him later on, particularly after he almost died from typhoid in 1871.

Apparently you can be "devoted" to your wife while having a long-time affair with another person. Arthur: devoted to both wife AND mistress
Don't forget that at that time wives were sanctified objects that were only touched for "reproduction purposes", and men were considered to have "viril needs" only satisfied by less sanctified women. Married women accepted because they were taught that if men didn't release that viril energy with mistresses, they would have to bear the unsatisfactory sex sessions. So they were ok with that apparently.
@@nataliasanchez8537 Most likely, it was a mixture of people just adhering/acquiescing to societal norms back then (ie what you've mentioned about wives being "sanctified objects" and such) and arranged marriages being an unavoidable circumstance. Imagine attempting to have sexual relations with a virtual stranger who you didn't even pick in the first place (I imagine most of them weren't attracted to or might even detested their spouse); that'll most likely kill any sex drive. Hence, how affairs were prevalent. Also, due to societal norms being in favor of the patriarchy back then, it was ig, more acceptable(?) for males to have mistresses. Females on the other hand, may have no doubt had extramarital affairs as well, but were more secretive and cautious going about it, due to fear of social death.

Edward VII is probably my favorite king ever, either him or George VI. He was dedicated himself to ending the many prejudices of his time, He maintained relationships with his entire family knowing that it was the most important thing. He was kind to everyone he met. He absolutely adored his children and loved nothing more than spending time with them. He learned to love his wife even though he thought their marriage would be horrible. He truly was an amazing person.

George VI will always be my favourite. Happily married and seen as being therefor his people during WW2. His father did the same during WW1.

He did not spend much time with his children. They did love him but were terrified of his sudden tempers.
His second son, the future King George V was terrified of him, and in turn, George V made sure his sons were afraid of their father, also.

Fate is strange thing, Alfred didn't get the Greek throne but Queen Alexandra (who was considered a ’poor princess’ by Queen Victoria’s relatives) ’s brother George did

Alfred in fact was the original preferred candidate by the Greek populace, with over 96% of the vote. Once his mother rejected the idea, the Greek government tried to ask other royals, but most rejected the offer and thus they had to go down fairly fair on the list. I believe George I was the 20th option.

Out of 6 children of Christian IX, two of his sons become kings (of Denmark and Greece respectively) his daughters Alexandra and Dagmar become Queen of England and Empress of Russia. And thought youngest children Vlad and Thyra married minor royals, they had happy family lives

Whoaaaa queen Alexandra was not deaf! Her hearing got worse, Yes, and she wasn’t good at conversing in big company because she had trouble listening, but its untrue that she spoke very little and she only became ‘deaf’ much later in life, certainly not when they got married.
She had an illness that caused the deafness might have been measles

@@normathomas8276 not necessarily. From what I read, her hearing troubles were hereditary (that is, it run in her background family) and she passed that on to at least some of her children.
Seems it... "came in handy" when she didn't want to hear something. 😉 She was told for instance during WWI that she'd have to cut back and live on a more modest scale (for a royal anyway!); and she couldn't have fresh flowers every day in each of her rooms anymore- no matter how much they raised their voices; she didn't hear that. 😉😤
Indeed - they had a lot of fun at first, but she became ill and then wasn't able to socialize as much as he liked due to several disabilities.
Queen Victoria commented on Alexandra's hearing loss which became more notable after her rheumatic fever episode in 1867 when she was only 22.

Not necessarily. Prince Arthur died at age 91 in 1942 and was Queen Victoria’s last surviving son. He was the second to last to die with his younger sister Beatrice dying 2 years later at age 87.
Not always as Alice and Victoria died at 35 and 60 respectively.

This might sound dumb, but I always wish we would just call countries and people what they call themselves, you know? I've always thought there's dignity in a name, have observed people mess up other's names to basically say "You matter so little, I'm not going to learn your name"
@@liliannamathers3428 she screwed up the pronunciation of Ulster. it's not an esoteric word. and there is nothing wrong with exonyms. English speakers don't call Germany Deutschland after all.

Warwick - drop the middle RW, change the A sound, ‘wo-rick’. This one seems to be problem for all Americans, there are many YT videos about Warwick Castle, try the one posted by George Pollen, to hear it said.
Keppel - both the Es are soft
Boar War - Boar (as in wild boar or boring)
Saxe - Sax (this may not be the correct German pronunciations but it is how it is pronounced in the UK)
Ulster - Ul (as in lull) ster
Liddell - it’s a family name so who knows, but most Brits would normally say ‘Lidul’ as in Eric Liddell of Chariots of Fire fame

The sons of Queen Victoria fared better than the daughters. They were able to get away from her and have a life. It’s sad that Leopold died so young and that Alice and Beatrice passed hemophilia to some of their children.

@@lucymorgan8859 I never really thought about it, but if you look at young photos of Bertie (Edward VII) and young photos of Winston Churchill, they look quite similar. It may have been possible. So, technically (if Churchill was Bertie's son) he would have been serving as Prime Minister under his nephew and great-niece.

I enjoy your videos very much. I don't know why I've been getting into monarchies lately even though I've always thought that most of them are outdated since societies have grown increasingly more aware of what is just, equitable, reasonable with insight and respect of the rights that each and all individuals deserve but I find they are an excellent source to have some perspective of history.
The charts you show as you present each child are wonderful. They have very concise information and it must have taken you a lot of work to get it together.
I think is amusing that you say Prince Arthur was "devoted" [as in dedicating his time and energies] to his wife but... he had a long lasting relationship with a mistress, so, I guess he wasn't that devoted after all because he either was with his wife and profess his love for her or be with his mistress knowing that at best, he's lying about his devotion. Nobody can be present in 2 places at the same time.

I really enjoyed this series about Victoria's children! Just one little thing: you keep saying Prince Albert died of typhoid fever, but it is actually not know what he died for. There are theories and since he's been ill for quite a long time, they think it could be cancer or Crohn's Disease ^^
The latest research indicates that his death most definitely was not caused by typhoid fever. Albert had typical symptoms all his life of what we would today call Crohn's disease.
