    Having a piece of equipment is a game changer. I've been clearing land at our house for a few years now. Fell a tree, limb it, buck it. Pile up the brush to burn. I put the wood rounds in our small garden trailer towed by a small lawn mower out by the road for free pick-up. We only have a fire pit and I've split enough wood for three years of burning. Love the videos. Keep them coming.

    Great philosophy Mike: “always leave things nicer than when you arrived.” It’s a philosophy that applies to every place we go and every moment of our lives.

      I find it interesting that there are so many opinions out there. Mike has repeatedly said he is not in a hurry, slow and steady and that also looks after the equipment. He takes time to enjoy his surrounds and see and smell the joy in his world.

    I always appreciate you explain what your plan is, so we can consider similar things as we work our own property. You said something a long time ago that made me laugh and stuck with me. You said, “TH-cam should be called YouShould, because of all the people trying to tell you what to do”. I can occasionally sense the frustration in your responses to suggestions, but you handle them really well. Thanks for continuing to film and share.

    Nice video here Mike. That's the nice thing about being retired, working on your own project and not NEEDING to do it, but just WANTING to. No one pressuring you, but yourself. Having the time to do it the way that YOU want it done. The joy and satisfaction of both doing it and the end result. No one is going to do a better job than you will. That's just how it is. It's how I was when doing my woodworking. Never in a hurry and loved every minute. More importantly was the reason I did it--because my wife would ask me to do it and then the smile on her face when I brought it in the house. That smile was everything I was working towards, nothing else. I bet you do some of your projects for the same pay😊😊. Keep your videos coming because I and your following you tubers enjoy your escapades. Enjoy the warm weather. Rain and 30's are coming back for a few days. Until your next one, Ron

    Good Morning Morgans great looking job Mike. Many don't realize this clearing project isn't Your first rodeo. One of My first attachment purchases was a Pronvost 6.5'W X9'L tandem axle hydraulic dump trailer. Rear remotes dump it. Endless uses.

      @BKD70 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, he definitely needs a "woods trailer". I use a trailer made from an old chevy pickup truck. It works fantastic... and I only paid $40 for it. Doesn't dump, but I hook it to a hitch that goes on my 3pt hitch on the tractor, if I raise it all the way up, it's pretty steep, makes it easy to just pull the wood down to the back end. VERY cost effective for the amount of use I get out of it. Probably the best purchase I've ever made in my entire life, LOL!

    I agree with Pierre. In 1986 I bought 25 acres on a mountain ridge. Bought it for the views off the mountain. Beautiful but I never thought how valuable flat land would be. Over the years I’ve had to haul in fill to create flat land to build buildings on. Very expensive and a pain in the butt. I like your way better. With as much land as you have you’ll always have trees. I’m enjoying your videos. Thanks.

    Not sure how some think you can flip a stump over and cover it up and be done with it. Mike the way you are doing it is the best way to get rid of the stumps. If you flip it over you still have the stump that will rot and now you have a soft spot and a hole. Thanks for another great video and keep doing what you do. It is working well.

  • @BKD70
    @BKD70 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Mike, I think you really need a good "woods trailer". I've got an 8' Chevy pickup truck bed trailer that I got for $40. LOL!! But that thing is just perfect for hauling firewood, especially for the price I paid for it. I drag that thing all through the woods with my tractor. It will haul 2/3 of a cord piled full of thrown on splits, hauling rounds, probably just a little less. Works great. You need one!
    A bed from a short bed truck would work also, and be more maneuverable, but you have to watch the axle placement on those... some of the short beds have the axle too far forward, and you can get them tail heavy, which makes for some problems when you have them loaded.

    You're gonna have a beautiful area when this is done. The only attachment for your excavator, that might be of use, is one of those three jaw scissor cutters. If your machine is big enough to use one, you could cut those stumps into fours or eights before you burn them. Make them easier to burn up. Take a lot less brush to keep em burning. But, like you said, this isn't a race. Thanks again and keep yourself safe as you cut!!!

  • @keithburch5506
    @keithburch5506 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I agree Mike, it's all good. It's great the way you're doing it. Clearing for pasture, cleaning as you go. You're adding inventory to your firewood that you sell as you clean up, so win win. I might cut the rest of the log off the stump before putting it in the burn pile, more firewood, quicker burn. But I really liked what you said near the first of the video and again at the end, finished result, better than it was before you started. As a Boyscout growing up and an assistant Scout leader when my boys were in the Scouts, it was ingrained in us to leave our camping sites cleaner and better than it was before we arrived. It just makes sense and gives a sense of pride when you leave. Growing up we did a lot of camping. We knew the woods were owned and dad would always find out who. I and sometimes we would go ask permission. Once on the third time in those woods, the owner came out and thanked us for taking care of his woods and leaving it like we did and that we were welcome anytime. Since then I've imagined the owners we don't see thinking the same. It just feels good. I've not ever said anything about changing your trails. You don't want to industrialize your forest. Keep your forest a forest. Enjoy being on the trails. Like you said, there's no rush, this you do for enjoyment. Few people have a forest. Some people don't even know what it feels like to spend the day in a forest w God and nature. I'd fix the steep hill but I'd try to keep it like it is. But it is your forest, I'm very happy whatever you do when you bring that gopro! Thanks Mike, very good video! 👍🚜❤🇺🇸🇺🇸

    I have learned a lot from you and have learned some of the lessons you just shared the hard way. Thanks to you and a few other channels, my hobby has become land work. I took an acre of my property and cleared it by myself over about a year of weekends. Chainsaws and excavators ranging from a Cat 302 all the way to a Case CX130- a few days with the lovely KX57 and KX80 too! Learned the hard way that big stumps aren’t worth pulling and should have ground them up but man O Man it was fun pulling them out with that Case 130! Thanks for all the lessons. If it will ever quit raining, my pole barn kit is in and I am going to see if RR buildings was a good teacher. For sure Mike Morgan was to get me to this point.

    I appreciate your explanation for land clearing. I cleared quite a bit of my 15 acres, for a house, shed, and roads/pathways in between. I started with a tractor bucket leaning against any trees that 'made me nervous' which was a LOT of them because I'm not a pro. I left a lot of stumps which I eventually got out with an excavator. I was later talked into using an excavator to do both tasks at once with the excavator holding the trees up to make chainsawing them a breeze. I ended up with two Large burns piles which included lots of stumps but I eventually got it done within a year while my house was being built.

    Good job Mike you are always thinking big picture. I was kinda forced into clearing my land, lost all my ash trees. Big mess I have to clear for hours just to get to the trees. Multi floral rose is everywhere. Look forward to seeing the finished project.

    hey mike, just a thought
    since youre gonna hire out someone to take out the stumps, take a look at hiring someone with a huge mulcher like a raptor 800 and get rid of stumps, roots, brush and also go and mulch the top soil and prepare the meadow...no burning, risk or fire, quick and simple , can have that all muched after you cleared it in a day or 2.. plus putting all those chips back to the soil to compost.. looks good after to

    It should be interesting to see how the local wildlife reacts to the clearing. I see the elevated hunting cabin in the background, perhaps some trailcams to see the visitors...I agree, burying stumps generally speaking creates problems further down the road whence they rot & the ground settles...
    Bill... :~)

    Mike, since you will be building a new road from the house to the meadow area, you can get a lot of shale from the meadow area. Make some borrow pits and pull the shale out for the base of the road. That will save you a ton of money. Just a suggestion.

    Good morning Mike. I have my own log splitter but not much access to wood anymore, so i have a guy deliver wood in log form and i split myself. Its a lot cheaper that way. So my question to you is do you have any customers that take fire wood in log form. Love watching the meadow project take shape. Have a day!

    Sometimes i feel like you make a video just for me, this being one of them. I could watch a video like this every day. I love hearing those trees crack over and crash to the ground and then that sound when they are running through the wolfe ridge splitter. I just love it. Stay well, stay safe and yall HAVE A DAY

    Mike you do what you think is right. With things being so tight to get in and out of the woods why break thing to get the wood out. Just a thought you could put a wood rack like you have on the loader on the 3PT. But slow and steady wins the race. SAFTY FIRST.

    I use my skid steer to hold trees like a cigar so I can cut rounds right into my dump trailer. I suggest metatarsals and shin guards when doing this. :) But it is faster than cutting them up and carrying them to the splitter. I then open the trailer doors and take them straight from the trailer.

    Always agree with your logic on how you take care of your woods. Curious if it would be worth pulling the stumps (not the big ones) and then cutting another round off for fire wood? Looks like you'll have a lot of stumps and it seems like it would add up possibly... Thanks for the videos

    Cutting your firewood poles closer to the ground would get an extra log or two for splitting. Awesome project Mike! Looking forward to seeing your finished plan.

    Many ways to do a project and everyone has their own idea what is best. Often it is based on their skill and comfort level with the task. I believe your scheme is a good one. Digging big stumps leaves big holes and may disturb the shale and then you have to haul in top soil. I am fighting with burning up about 75 24-28" dia pine stumps. Talk about aggravating!!

    Hi Mike just a thought when you have stumps on the pile you could cut a chuck off stumps let would help with burning later and save wood
