This game is wonderful. Every patch/expansion it gets better. I'm happy to see you playing it, I hope it happens more often. There are so many heroes, so many factions that you can create, that the game never gets boring.
@@Songfugel Every update and DLC you can really see the progression and evolution of the game and all of the different design concepts. Regarding the AI, it's pretty strong.

The customisability is nuts - so far every random combination I've tried has felt right. So you're obviously just getting into the latest version, but I also have to vouch for the previous titles in the series. Age of Wonders 4 is pretty much better than AoW 3 in every way, so I wouldn't necessary recommend going back to 3. If you are into old retro games at all I highly recommend Age of Wonders II: Shadow Magic. It was the first game I played in the series, and I think it still holds up really well.
Eh, my one complaint has been that all the different races play the same. Barbarian frogmen are the same as barbarian molemen. Industrious dwarves are the same as industrious elves. And the ascensions just boil down to "pick which color of bonus damage you want your troops to deal and be resistant to". And the higher difficulties are still just the same predictable, dumb AI being more frustrating to beat because they just cheat more on resources, cooldowns and city caps. And the only real counterplay is to become so intimately familiar with the mapgen algorithm that you start accurately predicting where the good resource/city spots are, and get to them first without having to invest as much into scouting to make up the resource advantage the AI has. And as a fairly casual player of the game, I just don't have time for that.
Few tips as someone who has quite a bit more time in the game - Warlock and Pyromancer are not the same - Warlock has a debuff single target spell, Pyromancer has an AOE Fire attack that puts ground on fire - comboing with certain other fire based units. Most units in this game have unique things past element. Also you seemed to be a bit icky on the magma spirits - their special thing is that they evolve. If you get them high enough rank, they upgrade into the Tier 3 elemental which is huge. Its one of the best early game units in the whole game imo. You do not need to be so consious of stability - any Dark City that is at least tier 2 is immune to all stability debuffs. As a Dark Culture you generally suck up bad stability since it doesnt hurt. Thats why they have so few Stab improving buildings. The Orb does more damage than the staff provided you use all of your actions - the advantage of a staff is the versatility really. Charge Strikes increase damage with hexes traveled so you should move Shock troops around extra squares whenever you can - for example Sniktch has a Slippery ability allowing him to not get hit - this pretty much allows him to Cycle Charge assuming he kills every time. About two hours into the video so who maybe you figured these out later but hopefully at least some of this is useful.

Since you're still learning Legend let me give you a tip. If you're playing a build that doesn't do a lot of diplomacy or if you don't find your same-race free city that always spawns near you early on, you can put your Whipsering Stone into your own capital city to slowly grow it's stability by 1 point per turn to a max of +20 stability. It can even be worth it to unlock extra Whispering Stones just to stuff into your own cities to really juice the stability to get the % based bonuses, especially if your playing a faction that benefits more from pillaging and razing npc cities rather than vassalizing or assimilating them.
Not sure if you figured it out later, but in any case: You can build provinces through owned underground passages. So your "Skavenblight" could extend to the surface.
Also to note if you wanna get the game. You don't need to have DLC to play DLC content if you don't want to buy everything. As a giant Warhammer fan, the customization is so nice, I was able to make damn near most of the factions, like Orks, Skaven, Chaos, Dwarfs, Elves etc, turning it into Age of Warhammer 4 basically lol, made it 10x more fun, hoping for a Warhammer inspired mod someday.
OMG???? Legend is doing videos on this awesome game! I hear the excitement in your voice on a game I have loved for years. I am glad you finally gave it a shot and hope you do more videos on it?
man, age of wonders 4 is such agreat game. I have so much fun playing it. I love the faction creator especially. and it just gets better and better with each new update.
Friendly tip: Building discounts from boosts can be received retroactively by fulfilling the boost condition, provided the building in question is still under construction.
Its nice to see you joining the Age of Wonder addicts. Been wanting you to play this since it came out. May not be like totalwar all that much, but its probably the best fantasy 4x game on the market right now. Also quite a bit harder then total wat, where once you have the basics down, you pretty much cant lose outside of making a big mistake.
As someone who grew up playing TW Rome, Shogun 2 and AoW 2 and now plays AoW 4 and TWW3 far more than my wife would prefer, it brings me great joy to see that legend has found this game as well
There is rematch during battle, but yes, not loading in the whole thing in the first place would be preferable. (Or reloading the whole campaign after autoresolve.)
It’s like the best timesaving feature ever, helps so much with campaign burnout. I also like you can rewatch the AI in autoresolve (and take over control at any time) to figure out what happened and what decisions it’s making wonky calls on (like prioritizing stunned chaff units, or wasting a turn stunning an already frozen unit)
@@milansvancara Whats fun for you is not fun for everyone. One save is just begging for technical difficulties like corrupted saves. Id never play a game if it had no regular savings. I strongly dislike games with automatic checkpoints too, let alone ironman difficulty.
@@Grivehn Have you ever tried cheating in game? Did you notice how it immediately stopped being fun almost instantly and you lost interest in the game afterwards? Yeah, this is the very same thing, just one step further. Yes, it sounds unconvinient to most people at first, but vast majority of people beating their first game in ironman mode never go back... the amplified fulfillment and joy from the game is infinitely bigger. Sure, there are some genres where it doesn't fit that well, but particularly strategy game players like those game because of their sense of achievement of "outwitting" the odds and their opponent. This is well researched area in psychology. Humans are not that unique, despite most of them are convinced to be. PS: yeah I of course understand the possible frustration of game breaking and you not being able to progress because of a bug, but there are ways to prevent that and it happens rather rarely
Hey Legend of Total War! I really enjoyed seeing you showcase Age of Wonders 4-it’s such a cool game, and I play it a ton myself. It would be awesome if you streamed it sometime, since it seems like you're really enjoying it. Watching you dive deeper into the game would be super interesting!
One of the nice things about Age of Wonders is that autoresolve isn't a theoretical calculation of the battle, it just plays out offscreen and you can watch a replay of how the AI did it, and then redo it yourself if you want.
They changed the charge mechanic recently where if there's trees or bushes along the path you lose your charge bonus. In your first battle, your full charge didn't apply. They also change skirmishers to be more useful by ignoring movement penalties induced by those tiles. Also bad events don't necessarily mean bad for you, it also means bad for your enemies or just reward you with more evil alignment. It just means events will be more evil oriented or grim. When you're full evil, you'll get more benefits than drawbacks because it suits your race's alignment. Same goes for good alignment.
Things always come full circle for me on things like this. Age of Wonders 4 was the game I had wish-listed and was ready to buy when I stumbled across WH3 summer of 2023. Forgot all about it. Totally buying it.
Dude I've had this game on my list for so long but wasn't sure if I wanted to invest in like total warhammer, so a huge endorsement from you is going to make me buy it. Thanks!
i really love that he plays this game, i hope we get to see some more. as im in the rare spot to be maybe helpful for him, and not as usually the way around here are a few things that may be helpful, will edit the further i get into the video: you can also "fasten the animation" by rightclicking, both in battle and on the map. you dont need to choose the fire tome for the quest, you can just build the ritual pyre after placing 2 foresters i would recommend getting some scout units early, having at least 2 is pretty good for finding good spots on the map for cities and also the enemys etc, units cannot be flanked when in guard mode, unless their guard mode gets broken ofc. you cities are a bit too close to each other, the 3rd one was kind of wierdly placed in the corner of the map. this makes its range to occupy stuff litteraly halfed. your public order is not as essentieal as you make it seem to be. you shouldnt ignore it but there are plenty of ways to increase them or even ignore them at all. dark is actually good because when building the "tier 2 town hall" it makes you ignore the economic penalties for neg public order. then at tier 3 you can build the "overlords tower" which prevents provinces from breaking off due to neg public order. so essentially at tier 3 when both are build you can expant as big as you can and have no penatlies. thats also why i would recommend to place your cities, especially as dark, further away so they can huge teritories.
Rare to see you not be an absolute master of a game, but one thing to note is that Dark empires don't suffer from negative stability once you upgrade your tower to tier 2. It's a huge advantage they have and would have let you expand more aggressively/not worry about stability which appeared to be at the forefront of your mind the whole video,
Great game. In many aspects better then TWWH3. The game does not drag in the late game. You have a lot of different win conditions so you are not forced to play aggressive if you like to turtle. You don't need to manage a lot of cities (you have 1 - 4 cities in an average game) but the ones you have are much more in depth (imagine Civilisation V). Combat is faster and very strategic just like in Total war but it is turn-based. You have a ton of spells and 60% of all spells are not used in combat but outside combat on the strategic map. You can use spells to augument your units/army permanently but you have to pay mana upkeep. Your units have separate experience bars. They can level up to a maximum of 5 levels and become much stronger. Some units even transform to a different unit when they reach level 5. For instance you can only recruit dragons as "young dragon". It is a very strong unit already but when it reaches lvl 5 it transforms to "adult dragon" which is a terrifying late game unit. Every hero you have has its skill tree and can have items (helmets, boots, chestplates, weapons, trinkets etc.). You have a lot of races in the game (Orcs, Rats, Toads, Birds, Humans, Goblins, Dwarfs, Hobbits, Devils, Lizards anything you can imagine). Honestly I could go on and on. The game is great. If you like TWWH there is a VERY HIGH chance you will love AoW4. Give it a try! PS.: Yes you can play as Skaven. There is a faction called "Reaver" in the game which is range focused with guns and cannons and Ironclads + you can select for them a "rat" appearance = you have Skaven :)
It's awesome to see you playing this and glad you're enjoying it, hopefully that means more to come! There's a lot of jank and number crunching to combine and explore in this game.
I remember loving AoW shadow magic. The campgain would become super frustrating as your missions often had "don't allow X leader to die" and the AI would pull out chess master moves and find the correct way to one shot that leader during battles! But wow the game looks great and I already know the gameplay is going to be great, thanks for the video!
35:33 Actually there is something you can do to get some stability early until you unlock stability buildings. On the city interface right next to population indicator, there is this gear shaped button. When you click it, you get the option to give a whispering stone to your city just like you can do to city states. That stone will give some stability.
Age of Wonders has been such an iconic franchise. I remember back when I was my grandparents' cabin as a kid, playing Age of Wonders 2 on my laptop in my bed at 2:00 AM in the morning when I couldn't sleep, storming the map with an army of goblin suicide bombers.
Wow, I've been following you for years with your total war content but I would never have expected you to play this gem of a game for some reason, don't know why I thought so because you can easily create any warhammer faction or other universe in this game. Glad you love it, it's a really damn good game, slept on really because they don't advertise it like other companies do. It deserves more attention and hopefully you'll help in that regard.
Amazing video Legend. Your respect for your audience sets you apart from most content creators. You treat your audience as adults and look out for what's best for us and our wallets. Turning off DLCs was such a good move too. Appreciate it. Keep up the good work.
Please play/stream this game on your channel! This video led me to download the game and now I'm absolutely obssessed. I'd love to see you playing more so I can learn the cheese in this game lmao
Wow, it looks like a lot of systems, but also compartimentalised so you don't immediately get overwhelmed if you don't focus on everything. The customisability of the faction reminds me of Endless Legend and their ability to make your own faction by choosing traits. It also had the same style of battle, but I really like this game's interface, showing what the enemy is capable of exactly.
Hint for new players (and even some veterans forget it): assign your whispering stone to your throne city on turn 1. It is free stability until you discover a free city to use your stone on.
@@Isvoor Might allow you to delay that tavern or get a couple of turns of increased yields from stability bonuses. Since it is literally free there is no reason not to do it. Having a whispering stone sit around is not using them to your advantage.
As a tip, you can increase your stability at the beginning by giving your city a whispering stone. Just click on your city and the cog button, you'll be able to give it there. By the time you find a potential ally, I find it always useful to give the stone to one of my cities. Edit: It's even mandatory to do so when you can't make allies due to race choices so that you can get a use for those whispering stones.
So nice to see a fellow addict Legend. I also implemented a faction from Total War Warhammer into the Game. Chaos Dwarfs (To be precise: Drazhoath the Ashen). Maybe you or the people in the comments want to give it a try? Had a blast so far with "The Legion of Azgorh" :P Traits: Strong, Resistant and Hardy Culture: Reaver Society Traits: Ruthless Raiders, Reclaimers Tome: Tome of Enchantment (For the constructs like Golems and such ^^) Ruler: Wizard King (Just because you can make him look more like Drazoath with this) You can of course change stuff up a bit, especially in the Society Traits department but other than that I think I got it right. Looking forward to seeing more videos about Age of Wonders 4 ^^
1:13:45 the reason the Greatsword has a bit more damage than the lance is because the lance allows you to use a mount which is an INSANE buff when you have good mounts.
Haven't watched the whole video yet but if you're playing dark, be sure to weaken enemies first before attacking them in melee. It's the only way dark can heal since they have no supports natively, and gives bonus damage.
For the brand of wrath at 55:05, that's what your cultural units already have. This enhancement gives it to non-culture units. Other cultures have a similar enhancement

Thanks for the playthrough. I would love if you could diversify (like once a week a vid on a different game than warhammer). Obviously if the stats are too low I'd understand, I'm just sharing my feedback. PS: The fact that the Thanquol campaign start after 13 minutes is not lost on me :)

Oh wow. I'm glad Legend gave this a shot! Hope to see some more!
Great to hear Age of Wonders is doing so well, and I would have had no idea it was free this weekend. Thanks for the great work!
As someone who grew up playing TW Rome, Shogun 2 and AoW 2 and now plays AoW 4 and TWW3 far more than my wife would prefer, it brings me great joy to see that legend has found this game as well
this retry button is something tww3 really needs.
Nah, these games need to enable one save only by default for all games and no reverting...
The fun is in the challenge:)
Ironman mode - Dan Bull
I got this game on release and it's just been getting better with every DLC. Glad to see you enjoying it too.
15:20 "Let me adjust the settings a little bit" -cranks the music up 😆😆 Can't blame ya. Game does have a great soundtrack
One of the nice things about Age of Wonders is that autoresolve isn't a theoretical calculation of the battle, it just plays out offscreen and you can watch a replay of how the AI did it, and then redo it yourself if you want.
Hell yea, Legend! Such a treat to see you join in on the fun of AoW4!
Age of Wonders has been brilliant since Shadow Magic back in 2003. Good to see it getting a wider audience.
Things always come full circle for me on things like this. Age of Wonders 4 was the game I had wish-listed and was ready to buy when I stumbled across WH3 summer of 2023. Forgot all about it. Totally buying it.
Thank you for showing us this Legend. It looks really fun. I'm definitely checking it out!
Tip: you can clear camps sooner when you use your lord to attack deselecting the rest of the troops. Something to minmax
only if your lord has a mount. thanquol is on foot for most of this
Dude I've had this game on my list for so long but wasn't sure if I wanted to invest in like total warhammer, so a huge endorsement from you is going to make me buy it. Thanks!
i really love that he plays this game, i hope we get to see some more. as im in the rare spot to be maybe helpful for him, and not as usually the way around here are a few things that may be helpful, will edit the further i get into the video:
you can also "fasten the animation" by rightclicking, both in battle and on the map.
you dont need to choose the fire tome for the quest, you can just build the ritual pyre after placing 2 foresters
i would recommend getting some scout units early, having at least 2 is pretty good for finding good spots on the map for cities and also the enemys etc,
units cannot be flanked when in guard mode, unless their guard mode gets broken ofc.
you cities are a bit too close to each other, the 3rd one was kind of wierdly placed in the corner of the map. this makes its range to occupy stuff litteraly halfed.
your public order is not as essentieal as you make it seem to be. you shouldnt ignore it but there are plenty of ways to increase them or even ignore them at all. dark is actually good because when building the "tier 2 town hall" it makes you ignore the economic penalties for neg public order. then at tier 3 you can build the "overlords tower" which prevents provinces from breaking off due to neg public order. so essentially at tier 3 when both are build you can expant as big as you can and have no penatlies. thats also why i would recommend to place your cities, especially as dark, further away so they can huge teritories.
Hell yes! Keep this up! I dont know why this didn't pop in my notifications but I'm excited to see you playing this one
To be fair PDX has been slapping with Stellaris and AOW4
very true stellaris has been the best for a while now and they keep updating it with awesome content still
u mean they've been slapping with stellaris dlc? game is 300€ now... and hardly better than before
@@SkyForceOne2 I play with the base game, and it's been fantastic. Every DLC they add I get free updates.
CK3 is also having resurgence, though it has been touch and go here and there.
@@buckbucker8020 you get half of each "feature" for free, yes...
Rare to see you not be an absolute master of a game, but one thing to note is that Dark empires don't suffer from negative stability once you upgrade your tower to tier 2. It's a huge advantage they have and would have let you expand more aggressively/not worry about stability which appeared to be at the forefront of your mind the whole video,
I think this sold me once he showed how he basically created the Skaven as a playable faction for his campaign. I'll try it out at least
You can get far more wacky than the skaven. I have seen Mole Snakes sparking with lightning.
I'm happy you found another game to scratch that strategy itch
Brilliant showcase! Would love to see livestreams of this!
There is a faction called "Reaver" in the game which is range focused with guns and cannons and Ironclads + you can select for them a "rat" appearance = you have Skaven :)
both good games
Better than TW? Ehhh
@@mickethegoblin7167 different, but like I said in many aspects better. If you want I can list what it does better. Let me know.
Damn, I love when a sponsorship feels genuine. Missed the free period (ends today but don't have time) but I'll definitely check it out ^^
Honestly happy to see more coverage over this amazing game
It's awesome to see you playing this and glad you're enjoying it, hopefully that means more to come!
There's a lot of jank and number crunching to combine and explore in this game.
Totally agreed, it's a great game! I'm glad you're enjoying it.
Also, I think Legend forgot you don't take stability penalties as the Dark culture.
I'm glad this video is doing numbers. AoW4 really deserves to get more eyes on it!
This game is sick, thanks for playing legend, leaving a comment here to try and get some more content on it lol
Legend of Age of Wonders 4, great game.
i bought this game a few months ago and thought it was wonderful. I'm so happy we now have Legend content on it.
7492 hours into WHIII is insane! I thought i had a lot with 1300.
More of this, please
More please, more!
Didn’t know this game existed until now. Loved seeing this gameplay from you
oh yes, thank you! i love this game and always thought that it would fit really well to your playstyle! i hope the game gets more attention this way
This is actually something that I might like to play. And who was surprised you customized Skaven? No one!
Amazing video Legend. Your respect for your audience sets you apart from most content creators. You treat your audience as adults and look out for what's best for us and our wallets. Turning off DLCs was such a good move too. Appreciate it. Keep up the good work.
LET'S GOOOO
I've put 1300+ hours into this game and counting, I love it. So happy to see you enjoying it.
It also had the same style of battle, but I really like this game's interface, showing what the enemy is capable of exactly.
so cool legend, I'd love to see more of this game on your channel
I like that you upload about a game you really enjoy
This "skaven" playthrough was great! I hope there's going to be a continuation and see how far this could go.
We gotta see a livesteam of this now
I have loved this game, been a fan of the AoW franchise since AoW1 good to hear you have enjoyed it as well!
Hint for new players (and even some veterans forget it): assign your whispering stone to your throne city on turn 1. It is free stability until you discover a free city to use your stone on.
It most likely won't increase your stability level and it will decay quickly when you take it off, so this will often do nothing.
Edit:
It's even mandatory to do so when you can't make allies due to race choices so that you can get a use for those whispering stones.
I was looking for something new to play. Thanks Legend!
So nice to see a fellow addict Legend. I also implemented a faction from Total War Warhammer into the Game. Chaos Dwarfs (To be precise: Drazhoath the Ashen). Maybe you or the people in the comments want to give it a try? Had a blast so far with "The Legion of Azgorh" :P
Traits: Strong, Resistant and Hardy
Culture: Reaver
Society Traits: Ruthless Raiders, Reclaimers
Tome: Tome of Enchantment (For the constructs like Golems and such ^^)
Ruler: Wizard King (Just because you can make him look more like Drazoath with this)
You can of course change stuff up a bit, especially in the Society Traits department but other than that I think I got it right. Looking forward to seeing more videos about Age of Wonders 4 ^^
i did something similar except it was just a Chaos Dwarf Overseer (Wizard King) and a bunch of Hobgoblins with the Ashen Sabertooth primal culture.
Hell Yeah. I'm glad you put out an AOW4 video! Great Game.
i spent tons of hours in aow3 i cant wait to play 4 ty legend
@LegendOfTotalWar don't comment on videos much, but I am glad you played this, it's great game and hope to see you livestream it at some point. Hopefully views allow you to !
@legend, do you plan to do more AOW4? This was super fun
Obligatory "Planetfall is amazing as well and severely underrated, go give it a try".
Uh oh now you all are tempting me to play it. Had this game on my wishlist for quite awhile 😅
I played a ton of AOW3 and a little of planetfall. So it seems like this is thematically more like AOW3 but with mechanical innovations begun in planetfall.
Bought the game and clocked 90 hours on my first match thanks to this vid, you should make more age of wonders content legend!
Been playing the series since AoW 2 over a decade and a half ago. They're all awesome games, glad you're enjoying it!
AoW4 just keeps getting better and better
Every patch, expansion, and update brings fantastic changes
Amazing to see what Triumph have been able to do with this game
Been playing this franchise for a while. It's great. Glad to see you enjoying it.
Legend on the streams: i don't have much free time. Alsow legend: i spent in a game 188 hours in two weeks 😅😅
That's why he doesn't have free time, you see 😂
13 hours a day. Wow. I think he mentioned that doesn't always close out games when he takes a break though, so a lot of that is probably idle time.
This game was also in on my radar and now it's on sale so nice timing to watch LTW while playing :D
I for one would love to see more AoW4 videos.
