    I just wanted to say that, im not sure if you will even see this but I do pray for continued protection upon your family, friends, home and equipment.

    PIG readings (from the orange coloured Kestrel Fire weather Pro) means Probability of Ignition. So if it’s reading 50% that means a random ember landing has a 50% chance of catching. He mentions 90% as really bad at one point as the fire is getting very close. Here is a complete list of everything that little tool measures
    Kestrel 5500FW Measures
    • Fine Dead Fuel Moisture (FDFM)
    • Probability of Ignition (PIG)
    • Dew Point Temperature
    • Heat Stress Index
    • Relative Humidity
    • Current Wind Speed / Maximum Wind Gust / Average Wind Speed (mph, km/h, ft/min, m/s, knots and Beaufort)
    • Wind Direction (degrees and cardinal compass points)
    • Crosswind, Headwind, Tailwind
    • Temperature / Wind Chill (Fahrenheit and Celsius)
    • Barometric Pressure (inHg and hPa (mb))
    • Pressure Trend
    • Station Pressure (Absolute Pressure)
    • Altitude (Barometric)
    • Density altitude
    • Wet Bulb Temperature (Psychrometric)

    I retired with 31.5 yrs in the fire service. When you first showed your house I thought “Uh Oh!” Best wishes to you brother but I would start out by clearing out a out a large area in your safety zone and get rid of that barb wire fence. You already know that if it gets bad and comes roaring in you will not be able to see or hear a damn thing. You do not want anyone getting hung up on that fence trying to get to safety.

      How about using that time to soak down that cedar roof? Cedar might combust when dry, but it also absorbs water, so why not spray it down? how far is an ample water source? Are they concerned about pumping their little pond dry? He said that pond raised the humidity of the whole area, so why not pump enough water upwind of the house to humidify the whole house area? Short on water? trucks too light? both?

      House back in the 40's had a parameter mister for wild land fires. Water would travel through old orangeburg and copper pipe and shoot water mist up at 90ft. We replaced most of that old pipe with 1" PVC and stainless nozzles. They have a large pond that they draw water from and two drilled wells. It's mostly around their house but with the right wind and back draft the mist should cover up to 40 acres. The owner left the old piston pump in the pump house but installed a secondary pto hook up if needed. That old pump still works, probably made in the 20's.

      Maybe you should run for Governor there or in Cali. When those idiots realize that clearing PREVENTS these fires...

    • @ecleveland1
      @ecleveland1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Decreasing the fuel load and getting rid of every old dead snag and old punky limbs still in live trees will go a long way. If you have the means to use a dozer be sure to build good firelines that you can maintain for years because they will serve you well if a fire comes. You can get a rope that has a bit of chainsaw blade on it and a weight that you can throw over the dead limbs so you don't risk falling out of a tree trying to get them.

    • @mcearl8073
      @mcearl8073 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bloginton Blakley No, You don’t need to do the whole state. You need to do selective areas that prevent these fires from spreading so far and destroying communities. You do the same thing the firemen are doing to try to contain the fires but do it before there are fires so you have the upper hand. Fires are going to happen no matter what, they’ve been happening long before we were here. The goal isn’t to stop them, it’s to make them not kill people and destroy property. They don’t want to do controlled burns or really any preventative measures and this is what they are left with.

As I watched I began to recognize the surrounding. I grew up not to far from your homestead. Literally less than 2miles away. This channel now has me watching one after the other. I’m down here in the valley, had some positive updates from my friend on the bluff above Molalla, his well has been on now for 36 hours and it’s been spraying his roof and it seems to be helping.
    He got all his livestock of the Mountain with the help of a very good friend of mine.
    This is a terrible time for Oregon, if you are needing help with clean up efforts please let me know. I have offered the same to my friends in Estacada as well as Oregon city.
    Here in Hillsboro we just have heavy smoke though I’m outside bald peak so my guard is up, the surrounding farm land has been being watered all day and most of the barley and grass farmers out here have cut down very low so I think we should be okay for the most part.

Teach a little about hoses, hookups, pressure settings, foam and such if you have time. Would be a GREAT class for the new homestead community. To repeat what I've heard from some of the comments in the other recent videos, while it would certainly be a handy personal tool, apparently drones aren't allowed in wildfire zones due to the potential hazard to other aircraft that might be flying in the area.

    • @flinnius
      @flinnius 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Also true. Mine will handle up to about 30mph, but as the fires get close, unpredictable winds tend to come with them... from a distance maybe not so much, but with such low visibility in all the smoke, the utility of them would certainly be minimal at best. Better to trade the weight and space for tools that prove more useful.

Watching these updates I’ve realised exciting is the wrong word, terrifying is more appropriate and you haven’t even begun. I have an even greater respect for you and all those putting themselves on the front lines to protect other peoples property. I went through the 2019 - 2020 fires in Australia -I evacuated after doing a bit of preparation before the fire hit. My friend evacuated her/my dogs at about 10am I got all my equipment - shredder tiller car with a stuffed radiator and no cooling and a flat tyre- gas bottles lined up with their vent valves facing to where I expected the fire to come from.
    It all worked- When I was able to.get back in after 6 days my living space was intact - sheds and wrecked cars were all gone - my little fridge in the caravan (trailer for US translation) had blown out in the fire and the rotting food was revolting - but the big fridge in one of the steel garden sheds was still going and the food was ok .I'm an athirst but miracles do happen and I don't pray to any God but you are in my thoughts and I hope you and your friends and neighbours survive this fire season!

    I was in Florida back in May when a wild fire came within about a mile of my house. It was amazing how fast it grew and we were directly downwind from it until the sun went down.
    Wild land firefighters are an amazing bunch.
    Like what you said about cedar shakes, pine straw mulch was/is a horrible idea.
