      Yep, when he said that I said "not just an American thing - it's a rural thing". I'm American, grew up in a rural area. We knew all our neighbors and had each others backs. When wildfires came the horse people, livestock people, farmers and fruit growers would all work together getting the animals out and then defending structures with irrigation equipment and whatever else was at hand. Now I live in a big American city and there is no such community spirit. I am considered a bit odd because I try to engage with my neighbors and offer help where needed.....

    • @kdegraa
      @kdegraa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sootikins I live in a city too, the biggest in Australia. We have a unit in a small block. There are four units in the block. We all know each other & get on reasonably well. We sometimes have a block party which is fun. We had one yesterday. It’s spring here and the weather is great. However it’s not all good here. The building has a curb side garden. I grow flowers like tulips and strawberries in the garden. While we had our party somebody stole a lot of the strawberry plants & flowers, digging them up & leaving a mess.
      I’m getting tired of city life. It’s not much fun now so am getting keener to move back to the farm. We are planting a macadamia orchard so we can both generate an income & have an interest on the farm.

    • @sootikins
      @sootikins 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@kdegraa Agreed. I really need to get out of here and get back to country living. We were fairly small scale citrus growers when I was growing up. I enjoyed it and would like to get back to it. I will have to move long distance if I want to do that. Farming is dead in my region. The land is considered far too valuable now because it's all being used to build crappy little houses (in the path of future fires) that sell for astounding prices. People flock to buy them and I don't understand why.

    • @kdegraa
      @kdegraa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brandon S and they all end up with the State controlling the fire fighting organisation resulting in many people leaving and doing their own thing. This is happening in Australia. The Rural Fire Service in NSW is controlled by a central HQ that will send trucks hither and dither. The bosses and bureaucrats are paid huge salaries to keep their hands clean, both physically and legally. Meanwhile farmers fight fires as they know their country and are prepared to fight for it.
      The wheel turns.

    The FCC specifically exempts radio operators during an emergency, no matter the size or severity, from any penalty for not having a license.

      The FCC doesn't even do any enforcement anymore. Ham license/GMRS license or not, having comms outside and inside of public frequency bandplans is a good idea for emergencies. The Baofengs may not be a "spectrally pure" as a Motorola, Kenwood, etc., but they do have their merits, such as accessory agility (mics, batteries, headsets, cases) and frequency agility (136-174, 420-520 MHz).

    I agree with your perspective on self sufficiency whole heartedly! In Louisiana, we learned after Katrina that we cannot depend on the state, federal, or local government to “save us” during a natural disaster. There aren’t enough government resources to help everyone. So a group of civilians organized, formed the Cajun Navy, and we as a people rescue our neighbors and ourselves from floods and hurricanes. When my home flooded in 2016, it was the Christian owner of my local vehicle inspection shop that got me and my family out of the flood waters. Not the police, not the fire department, not the national guard...it was an average Joe with a boat and a heart of gold.
    God Bless you for coming to the aid of that widow. So few people know how many widowed and elderly folks don’t have anyone to turn to during times of crisis. They either don’t have family nearby or their close family is various degrees of unable or uncaring enough to help. Keep up Gods good work that he has bestowed upon you, and I’m praying for you and your family from afar.

      If not wanting to get the proper training in wildland firefighting, the best thing to do as a homeowner or tenant is to keep bushes and trees cut back away from the house and clear out any debris and clutter from the house. Now having the sprinkler setup such as what Cody showed is a good idea and it doesn't hurt to have a way to put out spot fires should embers land in your yard. Get to know your neighbors and have a plan of action and be prepared to evac if necessary.

    Having no experience in firefighting, I found this after-action report quite informative. As an emergency comms-oriented ham operator, I note that standard 50W mobile 2m (VHF) FM radios typically provide communication ranges on the order of tens of miles (simplex, or radio to radio), depending on a number of factors, terrain in particular. That is a capability _independent_ of cell towers, amateur radio repeaters, and other forms of communication infrastructure. 73 de AB3ZI

    • @sunderodium
      @sunderodium 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes it is. The ham band were used how they were designed. Normal amateur use and emergency use. You were well with in the rules of the fcc. Not that that really matters in an emergency.
      Also its super easy to get a tech license, so you can use it any time. If you live away from cities i believe that it is a must have.

    • @randymartin5521
      @randymartin5521 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, I was thinking the same thing when Cody said that. Definitely legal for an unlicensed person to use amateur radio bands in a real emergency. Pretty sure that question wasn't on my test, but with a pool of a hundred or more questions to pull from, that's not surprising.

    • @guytech7310
      @guytech7310 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't think Cody was using the HAM bands anyway:
      1. using FRMS\unlicensed frequencies for his group comms. He had the HAM handheld, the other has midland radios
      2. He needed a radio with a scanner capability to monitor Fire & rescue channels. You cannot do that with a FRMS\GRMS radio since they do not have a scanner capability
      3. Its not illegal to use a HAM radio on HAM bands for listening only. You only need a license to transmit.

      Generally speaking the ignition of 83% of wildfires across the world are human caused, that does not mean arson, it can be a power transformer overheating, or a camp fire that got out of control, or something as simple as a usually harmless discarded glass bottle hit by the sun at the right time of day igniting scrub like a magnifying glass.
      Where the effects of climate change come in is in making the fire exponentially worse than it would have been under normal conditions, as warming effects have exacerbated drought conditions now for many years making ample fuel for fires, combined with altered hydrological cycles making ample fuel for fires, combined with a two and a half month longer fire season due to warming than 40 yrs ago, and altered wind patterns due to alterations of the jet stream caused by the loss of ice at the poles altering planetary convection patterns.

    We get the same type of wildfire in Australia and in recent times these have got worse in regard to damage to semi urban areas. This has many reasons. Current climate. Lack of fire prevention control methods. Complacent people building houses closely surrounded by trees that have naturally burned for thousands of years and then whinge when their house burns. And as you say instead of having a plan and the resources in place to defend your own or others homes our so called protectors the Police will come round give you notice to leave and then force you to do so. You have little chance to help yourself or others. I was rural fire brigade and you used to be able to get help and support from the community you were in. Now that is illegal. You can not involve anyone who hasn't had the required training. I agree with you who gives a stuff. If life, livestock, homes at risk be a man and defend them. The idiots making the rules are urban dwellers who know little of the country and don't like getting their hands dirty. Time to go back to basics.

Their spotter was evacuated due to changes in the direction of the fire, fully knowing he had no spotter, the superintendent Eric Marsh ordered his men to heroically move on to stop the fire. His 2nd in command argued with him that it was reckless and unsafe, but ultimately caved in. Not long after they descending out of the black, they were surrounded by changes in wind direction. The rest is history, but just being reminded of how important a spotter is, reminded me of that horrible incident.

      Scott Summers are you going to ask somebody’s political beliefs that needs help before you help them? Personally I don’t care what their beliefs are if they’re in need. If you care that much that you won’t help then your heart needs fixing. Hate is one reason there is division. Love your neighbor.

    Great job brother ,,,I’m retired LAPD and I try and stay prepared for any emergency and only you can depend on yourself. I’m going to tell you that their are not enough emergency personal to save everyone. Their is a term acceptable casualties loss or as we say ACL for those we know we can’t save. So people remember chance favors the prepared mind.

    Great video! In a previous video you talked about not having cedar shingles on your house. That got me thinking. I would love to see a video on the subject of proper landscaping and home structure to help protect your property from a wildfire. As a state wildland firefighter educating the public on this subject is part of my job and I can say it makes a very significant difference. “Defensible space” is the key. I can tell you are passionate about helping others. Keep up the great work! Prayers for y’all!

    I was so proud of you guys. I grew up with people who exercised intelligence and wisdom and skill. Watching you was like hanging out with family. I learned how to set up sprinklers in a circle around a house. Love it. When I get toy new place, I will be prepared to set the same things up on the roof. Will also have generator for the three wells on the ranch. Really loved watching what you were doing. Going to install GAIA now. I'm getting ready.

      "Rumors spread just like wildfire," the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Thursday morning, "and now our 9-1-1 dispatchers and professional staff are being overrun with requests for information and inquiries on an UNTRUE rumor that 6 Antifa members have been arrested for setting fires in DOUGLAS COUNTY, OREGON."

      @@jtoffroading2400 , true. The comment sections of forest fire videos have a lot of Antifa/BLM/energy weapons/secret agenda comments. It's quite sad and sometimes down right pathetic.
      ANY arsonist should be prosecuted. Most of the time they're seeking a personal high through destruction or notoriety. At that point politics are beyond irrelevant.

    If you don't believe Cody that you cant "Leave it to the pros" Would you believe the supreme court? The US Supreme Court has made it clear that law enforcement agencies are not required to provide protection to the citizens who are forced to pay the police for their "services."
    (DeShaney vs. Winnebago and Town of Castle Rock vs. Gonzales,). You are a fool if you leave your protection to those who have no duty to protect you. Thanks for the message of PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY Cody.

    We use a similar acronym here, LACES. They cannot afford fire fighters here, the fire fighters are literally the local farmers. They attend fire call outs in their tractors. I'm trained fire rescue and urban fire suppression and have gone into burning buildings to fight fires, or pulled people from wrecked vehicles. I'm still not considered a "professional" merely because I do it for free, I've been criticizedin the past for helping when out of uniform by idiots who can only stand around and make useless words. Don't take it to heart because when it's their house that's burning down they quickly change their tune.
