- How to crochet, "The Chocolate Box" by Jan Eaton. With permission from Interweave Publishing, I share the steps to create this simple but lovely block that looks complicated. "The Chocolate Box", is a great pattern if you are looking for something "mindless" that you can do for pure relaxation. It's also an ideal square that can be turned into and infinity style blanket. I share some tips on this so be sure to click on the time stamp below for more information.
Time Stamps:
Tip on how to use this pattern as an infinity style crochet blanket : 00:39
Round One: 3:11
Round Two:: 6:00
Round 3 and subsequent "dc cluster" rounds : 9:27
Round 4 and subsequent "corner spike" rounds: 13:15
Border of the square: 16:01
I am using US terms in the video. UK conversion reference guide :
Chain (chn) is the same for both
US single (sc) = UK double crochet (dc)
US half double (hdc) = UK half treble (htr)
US double (dc)= UK treble (tr)
US triple (treble) (tr) = UK double treble (dtr)
US double triple (treble) (dtr)= UK triple treble (trtr)
Hook: 3.75 mm Ergonomic Boye

Lovely thanks 😊 They make great cats blankets/mats. I'm making them with scrap yarn for the shelters 🐱🩷
Amazing tutorial and book recommendation, and I love that you decided to keep the "swear" in. We've all had those "oh crud how much of this am I about to have to frog" moments and it's a refreshing reminder that even the pros do too ❤
All theeeee time ! 😅😅💕
Another great tutorial so glad I found you, keep them coming your a great teacher so relaxing to listen to, xxx

Wonderful 😀💕🧶
I've been considering making a granny square cardigan. This would make a interesting one I think 😊. (By the way, you cracked me up with your "swear"! I haven't heard that in years 😂 my favorites was one my mamaw used, "well flitter!"
Thank you! 😊 I might have to steal that one , I love it!! 😂😂💕

Hahahaha, son of a biscuit eater. Yes ma'am, we all do swear and no, that wasn't really a swear. You crack me up, Roz!
My thing is blankets, so I will definitely be using this pattern. So glad I found your channel because you're an amazing teacher.
Oh how kind of you to say ! Thank you for joining and I look forward to playing hooky together . I’ve been editing out some “real” swear words lately 🤦🏼♀️😂😅 I have to remind myself I’m a crocheter, not a sailor. 😉
Xx
@@PlayHookywithMeThat's hilarious Roz! I look forward to playing hooky together as well. I also started following you on Instagram😊 I hope your channel continues to grow.
@@Michelle.05 thank you so much!! 💕
Box stitch I did as a runner
Such a versatile stitch 😀🧶
@@PlayHookywithMe doing indefinite square blanket is a good idea. Ihate joining squares. I don't like those tails. I like your chain method. Wilhite to let that a go.

Play Hooky with Me 🤬😱🤣
aww i love how you curse lol that was cute
😂😅💕
When you are explaining why to flip it and you bring in your other blanket, that’s a granny stripe correct? Anyway, you said that you did it the “front way and then the pearl? you kept referring to the 2 different ways and I was trying to understand what you were referring to(only reminded about 4 times to try to see a difference) but I just couldn’t see what you were trying to show us… what’s the pearl stitch? I wasn’t noticing a difference are you crocheting the stitch differently when you are flipping it over as well? What am I missing here?? Also do you have a tutorial of that other blanket you are working on as well? Haha-/
Btw- I have same hands and hips issue 😂
👋🏻 hi - thanks for your question.
What I was trying to show was the front and back texture of a granny cluster stitch (the 3 dc’s ) .
When you flip it each time , the texture of the stitch will look slightly different . “Pearl” -I was referring to the term from knitting - I don’t know why I did that 🙄. But basically , I was trying to point out that it is more bumpy looking than the front side of the stitch.
If you flip back and forth , it will stop your square from turning as you work.
I share examples of this in a video here so you can see what I mean.

This will hopefully give you a better idea of what I was trying to say. Sorry, I made it more complicated than it needed to be! 💕
Hi! I found two books by Jan. The one with this pattern is the book cover more green or pink? Not sure which one to order. Thanks! Great tutorial!
I am SO sorry that I did not see your message !! It is the green cover , Colleen. It may be the older version- I’ve had it for several years. 💓
Play Hooky with Me Thank you so much!
I have never had my squares start turning. I don't understand how someone ends up with a crooked square?
Hi, I'm about to crochet my first baby blanket with this stitch (have done the bog-standard granny squares before). How much yarn will I need?
Oh lovely , enjoy yourself. This was just a stitch tutorial but there are resources online that can help you with a rough estimate . It will depend on the hook and yarn size you’re using.
Here’s one from a yarn company but I’m sure there are others :

And you’re very welcome for the free pattern 😉
Which was very informative for newbies like me.
Please when you can can you reply to me with this pattern do you have have to change colours every round and can you use colour changing yarn like caron cake if so at what round do you turn from 1 side of square to next
You can use a Caron cake no problem. Just turn after every round in that case.
Can you list the color of yarn? Ty
Oh my goodness-I made this video several years ago. I can’t remember the names but I do recall that this yarn was style craft special dk. You can find it at lovecrafts.com
