I think Thorfinn first heard the "far to the west" speech in the literal first episodes of season 1 when Thors delivered it to the runaway slave, and like Arnheid, that slave ended up dying too, but it's a powerful speech nonetheless and I think demonstrates a kind of shimmering hope that Thorfinn can someday kindle into a huge burning ball of salvation. In some ways, like Canute, Thorfinn wants to find paradise on earth too.
