  • STMA trains on the old Milwaukee Mainline between St. Maries and Plummer and on the Elk River Branch down to Clarkia. The power, buildings, log cars and track are all old Milwaukee. Even the STMA's paint scheme invokes memories of the MILW's early diesel paint scheme.

Being a Milwaukee Road fan I absolutely love STMA. That log train is something else, GP9's, friction bearing log flats and a caboose, all running on 60lb rail, it is about the closest you can get to stepping back in time.

2011 update on this line. In 2010 they no longer run logs from Clarkia to St Maries and Potlatch Timber Co. sold it to another fellow. Which sadely means that the last true log train in america is gone. One who is owned and operated for the sole purpose of moving logs t the mill. They had almost 500 of these log flats and almost all went to the scrapper. For us railroad fans in Idaho this is sad news. I hope the railroad has a bright future hauling finished wood products .

I can remember when the old Milwaukee came through St Maries on its way up to Avery. At Avery the electrified branch into Montana began. Great memories!!

@@terryvietz7944 They are no longer issuing track warrants. Part of this line is now being used for car storage by TTX.

Though there is a slow order for at least maybe 15 or 25, at least there's still some trains on a former transcontinental railroad that no longer exists in many places. Keep that Long Train Runnin', St. Maries River Railroad!

The STMA has no plans to buy more new Locomotives to add to their fleet.

The Plummer - St. Maries stretch is used a few times a week. South of St. Maries has been mothballed. I assume it's still in place.
