I recently finished putting together a mahogany Strat body and mahogany/Indian Rosewood Warmoth neck with Dylan P90 Soap Bars. They sound fantastic. I went with Dylan's recommended pots and caps which I believe were 500K and .022Uf I've put together five other guitars that I stuffed with various mfg's premium pickups. I keep coming back to these P90s.
Often when I say to myself "oh you can make that" I watch someone doing it and decide "oh you can just buy it". P90's are tonal perfection I do believe. Great video.
hi dylan. i have been making my own pickups for a couple years. thanks for this video. helped simplify a couple things. very much appreciated. rock on dude...
9:16 pm Monday On the Recap.... @DylanTalksTone I'm HAPPY to own A Set of your P90's pick-up's! I'm waiting on other parts for my next Guitar Project. I already know your HAND MADE PICKUP'S Number 1 in my Book 📖 Thank You For Sharing Your Work of Art 🎶
Hi Dylan!! I missed the live. I enjoyed watching you make your soap bars P90s. I have a set but haven't purchased the guitar for them yet. They'll go into an EPI Wilshire. Thank you.
Great video! Thanks for sharing this. So, what next? How about splittable coils versus tapped coils. I want something that is good for clean tones and overwound for higher output.
So cool Dylan! (Hope you ship to Europe 😉) I’ll be buying one soon for a Jr project I’m going to begin. PS. I think it would be to your advantage if you post a bunch more videos with demos of the sound of your pickups. At the moment there are very few but your pickups are definitely worth marketing a lot more they sound amazing! Regards, /Vincent 🇸🇪
Hello Dylan. I have a 335 with coil-tap P90s and I want to put a regular volume inplace of the push-pull bournes pot. I just want the bridge P90 full on without tap and using a CTS pot. How can I do this, I just want a regular volume pot on the bridge? Any help would be appreciated. I could probably figure it out but I wanted to gather as much info as possible. Thanks.
How much resistance are shooting for on the P90's I love the way they sound even though I don't own a guitar with P90's ....Yet! Nice video, thank you.
I wonder if anyone has ever done a P90 with a steel base plate? Or even like a Jaguar style claw. Not sure if it would be worth doing or sound good but could be a fun experiment.
You could do that but it wouldnt work as well. The mag would saturate one side more and less on the other side of the winding. If you were to change the north/south orientation of the magnet and install the mag sideways thru the center of the coil then it would work.
Quick question… why do some people like Ron Ellis charge $250 EACH for pickups ? While you charge fairly for a great product? I’m genuinely curious why others charge more than double the standard
I'm at something of a loss. I don't have a guitar routed for P90s. The P94s Dylan made for me are divine, so I can only presume the flagship pickups are better.
A more purist artesanal way would have been winding these by hand to give them a warmer sound and a step ahead of Josefinas pick ups to make them more unique
Ummm no. No one hand winds pickups. Not even Joephina at Fender. So, what are you talking about? It wouldn't take that to make a better pickup. Why would you think it would?
So it's definitely your saliva and the number of times you put the wire in your mouth that gives them their superb tone. That's why they can't be replicated either. Ha. Seriously though, great video and I'll be ordering some for my next build.
Interesting, thanks for showing this. Seems quite tedious. I bet you lock the door and turn off your cell phone to avoid interruptions. Need to get a pair someday.
I have a Chinese Epi Casino...the only thing stopping me from replacing the pickups is access to the harness. I'm seriously thinking of cutting the back to gain access with a custom hatch. Seriously Epiphone, add some modern conveniences so I don't have to mod every guitar again and again.
I need to get a pair of these. I’ve got an SG I love the neck feel of, but not the humbuckers in it. I want to rout out space for p90s and get a replacement pickguard to route out to fit, I’d love to have these pickups in it. I don’t really want the humbucker sized p90s, I want these 🙂
Make sure you use your mouth to tie your wire, just like Dylan. Its called tone spit. It helps your pick-up match the vibration of human genitals. Thats what makes guitar players seem more attractive than we really are. Trade secrets.
What are the Best p90's ? If you can tell me the best p90 I'll call you a lier. Lol The way we word things surely can keep us out of trouble, no accountability.
Why was this called "how to make the best p90", it should be called "how to make a p90". No info on wire gauge (42} or number of turns (10000). That's 18 mins of my life wasted. Thumbs down and unsubscribed.
Mad respect for showing exactly how you make your product, which is your livelihood. No BS.

P90 is my favorite to have in the Neck Position.
Good P90 tone...nice vintage P90 sound..... impressed👍🎸
Very cool episode. Go over the Firebirds, and tell us why they're different!
Looking forward to this! Really enjoy these shop videos and watching you make your products!! Your P90s sound great in my Les Pauls!
Thanks Dylan. That was a really interesting video. I,ll never take pickups for granted again. A real art form...Well done. 👍🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
It's a pleasure you watch you at work, Doctor.

Nice ! Can't wait to put one of these in my LPJr
Pups sound great! Thanks for taking us through the process!
So more like hand-tensioned rather than hand wound?
Great video! Thanks for sharing this. So, what next? How about splittable coils versus tapped coils. I want something that is good for clean tones and overwound for higher output.
Very interesting. Nice workmanship. And I now know what is inside a humbucker. Thanks.
I love that opening riff.
Always learn something from these. Not sure how you haven't passed 100k subs yet.

Fell in love with one P90 guitars this summer. I use to think that was craziness . But, not anymore!
Absolutely fascinating. Thanks for sharing....
That’s it. I’m buying one for my Epiphone LP Jr. can’t wait. Thanks Dylan.
This was really cool, always learning stuff from DTT!
Love that! Thinking to get one for my beloved Junior. Cheers from Italy
THANK YOU FOR THIS! You make me wanna sprint full speed into winding pickups. I hav to control myself, Lol
that thing turns so fast, doesn't the coil burn your hand?
Very interesting, Thanks Dylan.
P90s in the neck are probably my favorite sounds on a guitar.... great through a fuzz, a delay, reverb.... anything sounds good with a neck P90
For jazz guitar, it’s excellent.
@ramencurry6672 also ambient...... kick on a shimmer reverb and the creamy but articulate sound of a neck p90 can't be beat.
That was absolutely fascinating! Thank you for that.

With all due respect, I missed the part about why yours are the "best" , and so so much more. Thank you very much.
I think your video is awesome… enjoy your details… I need to put a set in a sg…. Can it fit in humbucker spot
If you're making a pick up for a lefty is the approach different in any way?
I enjoyed the video. Thanks Dylan !
HT magnetize your Watch !! 🙂
Is it noiseless ? Sounds awesome
Got a pair of dogears from you for my Epi Wildcat. Doing flat wounds (Jazz/ Blues) Ideas on 500K Pots?
How would you compare the Gretsh 5110 p90?
Hi, what is the difference in terms of how pickups work when it comes to single coil shaped hubuckers (2 coils or rails) and noiseless (stacked) ???
They work just like a normal humbucker. The only difference is that the bobbins are stacked instead of side-by-side
How come p90's use two magnets, can they just use one and a spacer like a humbucker?
You could do that but it wouldnt work as well. The mag would saturate one side more and less on the other side of the winding. If you were to change the north/south orientation of the magnet and install the mag sideways thru the center of the coil then it would work.
Just got a pair of p90s from Dylan and they are great
Request; a single coil (as in a Strat style)
Sooooo Dylan I have always wanted to do a P90 with 2 singles. Thoughts?
Fascinating watch 👍
chrome/nickel cover option soon?
We have chrome
First time, long time!
Welcome!
Vintage p90s didn't have a plastic comb ..did they?
You are doomed to become a TH-cam hero/star.
Have you ever done a slugged P90 before? If so, how's that sound?
They are on our website
Really are great P90s.
I know what we’re talking about on Thursday! 😊
Quick question… why do some people like Ron Ellis charge $250 EACH for pickups ? While you charge fairly for a great product? I’m genuinely curious why others charge more than double the standard
Because they can.
It’s like making a magnetic pizza pie😃
I love the sound but how dust I sound in a band situation
I have no idea where to buy a magnetizer. Any tips?
I'm at something of a loss. I don't have a guitar routed for P90s. The P94s Dylan made for me are divine, so I can only presume the flagship pickups are better.
You guys moved back into a house??? I've been away a while. 👌
Dylan…thanks so much for showing that pickups are just a man-made part and not some magical woowoo fairy dust thingamajig🤣
A more purist artesanal way would have been winding these by hand to give them a warmer sound and a step ahead of Josefinas pick ups to make them more unique
That wouldn’t create a warmer sound. That would make the inductance much lower, they would not actually sound very good.
Ummm no. No one hand winds pickups. Not even Joephina at Fender. So, what are you talking about? It wouldn't take that to make a better pickup. Why would you think it would?
@@J.C... When did I say Josefina did ?
All but 2 of my guitars are ate P90

With a winding machine it's very quick. I did one in under 20 minutes using a power drill.
The secret to the tone is the Dylan spit
I have a Chinese Epi Casino...the only thing stopping me from replacing the pickups is access to the harness. I'm seriously thinking of cutting the back to gain access with a custom hatch. Seriously Epiphone, add some modern conveniences so I don't have to mod every guitar again and again.
If you're not going to replace the pots/switch, just cut the pickup leads right at the end and splice them to the harness. Easy peasy.
I need to get a pair of these. I’ve got an SG I love the neck feel of, but not the humbuckers in it. I want to rout out space for p90s and get a replacement pickguard to route out to fit, I’d love to have these pickups in it. I don’t really want the humbucker sized p90s, I want these 🙂
Thanks for this, but I can’t help but wonder if exposing all your trade secrets is the wisest move. We don’t want Chylans like we got Chibsons.
No trade secrets here, just basic construction, which is the same for all pickup coils.
The key to tone is Dylan's saliva.
Make sure you use your mouth to tie your wire, just like Dylan. Its called tone spit. It helps your pick-up match the vibration of human genitals. Thats what makes guitar players seem more attractive than we really are. Trade secrets.
Show me
I did
Who cares
Thanks so much for clicking and watching. I appreciate you ;)

Well that would be the trade secrets that he said he wasn’t going to share that is the secret sauce
