+Axe Avier He means that he empathised with the situation of these old men, even though they (well, at least Francis) demonstrate sociopathy, not that sociopaths will be touched. Anyway, I'm not even sure sociopaths don't feel anything; I once read they do, different prom psychos, who are basically robots, they are just extremely geared towards doing anything to achieve what they desire.
This song is basically a reskinned version of "The Boxer", and their other song "Engine for Gabriel" is hauntingly similar to "Cecilia". It most certainly is intentional, and I love it
"Francis choked that chicken with his hands. But watching them die, he started to cry. I'm bored - Francis said. Let's steal a car." This is just perfect.
Sanctus Paulus None of the caracters are called Bård, the guy singing is. You hear how only one of them sings that part? It is the one of the two brothers who is called Bård.
It definitely has a serious core, and that makes it even more awesome. You take your wife for granted, as a man you might forget what positive influence she has on you. Then one day she is gone forever and with no one to rein you in, you go haywire. There is an empty wifeshaped void that you fill with whatever makes your numbed senses come alive. You throw rocks, you shoot horses, because anything less would mean nothing in your grayed out lonely world. In the end, all it boils down to is that you might have a friend, who is as broken as you perhaps, who has a hat. All we can ever hope for is a friend that we tolerate, and more importantly seems to tolerate us, brokenness and all. Then all is ok. '.... don't you worry 'bout me now. I'm doing just fine on my own.' No, you are not! But with a friend you just might.
My grandpa died a week ago. I‘m crying right now, deeply touched. Thank you for the song... I’m gonna take care of my grandma and make sure she doesn’t throw rocks from her balcony ;)
This is by far their best song. The lyrics, melody, cinematography, acting... they all meddle in a beautifully fun, yet melancholic song, which perfectly embodies the human condition. It's upsetting to see that it's of their lesser known songs, especially when you compare it to "what does the fox says"
I am 12 my great grandpa passed away a few months ago. His name was francis and he always wore a fedora. As soon as we arrived to the funeral this song immediately came to mind. We played it for his friends and neighbors and his wife and everyone thought it was hilarious. My great grandma listens to it every single day. This song always reminds us of him and how funny he was. Even though this song was made as a joke and I’m commenting this seven years later, it helped lots of people emotionally too. Thank you ❤
"Life´s a bitch," a wise man said "No matter what, you´ll end up dead, And all that you can wish for is a FRIEND..." These lines are so true that it almost hurts... You just gotta love Ylvis
I sing the acceptable parts of this song at work quite often. Today a coworker asked me what song it was. I smiled and told her to look it up. Pretty sure she knows I'm a terrible person now. :)
My dad is 82 and a widower. He came to visit me in NYC back in 2010. A big snowfall on xmas. He and I fell down in the fresh snow in front of the NY Stock Exchange and made snow angels. No one was around. One of the happiest moments of my life. That is why this song makes me so happy!
at the beginning of 2024 i was faced with a divorce. this song made me laugh and cry and gave me a little hope for a cool life. that's the true power of music. thank you.
I have to say the acting from the old men in this video is amazing. The looks of thinly-veiled horror on the protagonist's face as Francis's behaviour escalates are absolutely brilliant. Also the part when Francis himself almost breaks but then suddenly snaps out of it and says "I'm bored"... Genius! Though I wouldn't expect anything less from Ole Martin Hafsmo!
I know this is tongue-in-cheek humor, but this song summed up what an old friendship was to me. My best friend and I hadn't spoken in years out of anger and foolish shit. I sent him this link. +GameOfThomas because ylvis hype is dead. People had high hopes for the fox follow-up, but makkakoko and trucker's hitch didn't cut it, so people forgot about them.
havardmj I`m norwegian, so the Fox song was just another comedy bit in their talk show to me and far, far from the funniest thing they have done. This song is much more in line with their dark and clever humour.
havardmj Det forklarte jeg jo i kommentaren:p For meg, siden jeg er norsk, er Ylvis noe helt annet enn "de som lagde den fox-sangen". Denne musikkvideoen burde gått viral, uavhengig av hvem som lagde den.
Simon & Garfunkel's CD-box from 1997 is called "Old Friends". The first line here is "I saw you at the railway station", the first line in "Homeward Bound" is "I'm sitting at the railway station".
+Quirentia I noticed that too. Although the whole song itself is more reminiscent of "The Boxer", I also thought of "Homeward Bound" because of the railway station line.
+Quirentia I was just coming back to write that very same thing. Just listened to it ("The Boxer"). This also reminds me a little of a bit that the Smother's Brothers did ages ago. They sang "The Streets of Laredo" on their comedy show and when they were singing "I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy, the last line Tommy Smother's sang was "if you get an outfit you can be a cowboy too". It kind of reminds me of the "and he had a hat, and I had a hat" part. I know it's kind of far fetched, but I've heard speculation that Ylvis may have had some early Smother's Brothers influence also, although I don't think that's been confirmed, by any means.
+Marilyn Tregaskis-Smith As for the content I'd vote for S&Gs underrated "Old friends". "Old friends, winter companions, the old men. Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sunset.
So evil and beautiful at the same time! Ylvis the masters of ambivalence! I wish there would be so brilliant comedians in germany... This song is not just excellent written, performed and produced, but is also putting the finger on the wound of our mortaility and human darker sides in a way that you can laugh about. A stroke of genius!
Literally one of the most beautiful songs ever written about friendship. Sometimes satire surpasses actual art. I sent this to 2 of my best friends. The one really liked it. Now he likes to ask if I have my hat, or if Ryan has his hat. LOL. Good, we all have hats.
I guess why so many people are saying this is sad, is because after watching it so many times, i realized... would it be sad if they were two young people doing the same stuff? i guess its because we interpret it as two old men, who lost everything they had(their wives) and they are trying to feel alive again doing those stuff, throwing rocks, stealing a car, etc... Truly beautiful.
The "Simon & Garfunkel" sweetness, simple harmonies with acoustic guitar accompaniment, but with the most F-ed up psychopathic lyrics. Ylvis are genius.
I think they must've read my mind, I have wanted a full-acoustic song from them for ages and ages! I love when they sing harmonies, I could sit and listen to them doing it 24/7 basically :)
My best friend passed away in 2019. We loved Ylvis and always sung their songs together as it was the perfect humour for the two of us. This always brings back memories
Ylvis are legitimately incredible artists. Every music video they make shows an incredible understanding of writing, film, and music as artforms across all genres in order to convey their satire. You need to know the rules in order to break them. They combine their knowledge and abilities to create their art, things that reflect/critique/subvert the societal conventions that we take for granted. It's a bummer that humor is not recognized for the immense intelligence to observe, understand, and breakdown to the core what things are, particularly satirical humor. They are fantastic musicians as well, which helps to be able to sing any kind of lyric. It's always so impressive the effort and sophisticated techniques in every single video. There are fascinating concepts in all of them. For the students in university who can design their own classes, Ylvis's music videos would be amazing to analyze, they're chock full of detail to dissect in all of them even if Ylvis themselves would downplay their incredible work, they are incredibly detailed and intentional in every single aspect. Of course, all the music videos are also catchy and enjoyable to watch for everyone who doesn't want to take a deep dive as well. The thing about art is that every individual can take their own meaning and way to enjoy it, even separate from the author's intention. Ylvis rocks across all metrics.
A good point, Ylvis doesn't get enough credit for their art partly because they themselves downplay what they've made as just some silly songs and such. I think they're incredible.
Friendship Goals! My eyes misted a little. I never knew I could feel so many conflicting emotions at once. Thank you Ylvis for opening my heart to new feelings.
4 years after I first saw this, still my favorite song. Is Francis a good guy distracting his new buddy from his wife's recent death, or is he just a sociopath dragging along someone who is all alone? Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing humor, but even if that is the case this is so good.
I love Ylvis and their songs, and this is no exception! I would like to challenge Ylvis to write an album of non comedic / normal songs because I think it would be just as amazing xx
Well done ylvis... this song hits hard if you think about it, two old men who lost their wives and francis is probably really depressed and thats why he does all these things to feel free.

So on point and great lyrics. Sometimes i forget that you are doing parodies. This is much more than just a parody.
I can't stop crying when i think about the future ,when my friends and i get old .We just sitting around drinking some water ,thinking about the past .So every day we sitting there ,talking about everything .Then each one of us past away ,until one day .It just me .....
This is so good. Can not get it out of my head. This is poetry, but mayby you two geniuses laughting your asses off. But for me;'For all old mates, you are always with me.
i have a theory about this song. i believe that our protagonist had been mentally unstable for most of his life, supressing intense feelings of anger and violence, and his beloved wife was the only thing keeping him sane. after her passing, he finally snapped. see, i think the protagonist suffers from some form of dissociative identity disorder, more commonly known as split personality, and this "francis" is a persona he created as a vehicle for the violent rage that his wife had kept in check, now free to run amok after her passing. Notice how the protagonist and Francis both have hats. The hats are a metaphor. they are symbolic of their psychological connection, that they are truly one and the same. When Francis cries when he strangles the chicken, that is a bit of the protagonist shining through the cracks, coming to his senses, however momentarily, and realizing just how horrible his actions are. Considering how swiftly francis reassumes control, it would seem to our protagonist that he did not even realize it was him crying, not francis, further blurring the lines between the two personalities. Truly a tragic song about a man pushed over the edge by greif.
Cactusman129 Another thing to help your point is the rock part where the protagonist says not to throw anymore rocks but Francis does anyway yet the protagonist continues to follow. Also the horses being set free would seem to be great contrast to rock tossing but it, like everything else, goes bleak yet the protagonist follows anyway, almost as though he is completely powerless.
"Life's a bitch. A wise man said. No matter what, you end up dead. And all you can wish for is a friend." This song is so silly and hilarious. But Damn this lyric really touches me. Such a good song.
This song helped me overcome my mourning over the death of my wife by committing a variety of war crimes. Much love.

That was incredibly touching in a very sociopathic way.
Yes
Yeah

The Ylvis brothers has got to be the world's least predictable song writers.

Hahah yes
@Alex Fox no.
@1001foxes Absolutely not. Their name is Ylvisaker. It's the short version of their name.
I don't think Francis's wife died of old age.
You can tell by how he choked the chicken
hahahaha
Agreed.
u can look the end of the song and thnk that they are who are really dead, i dont think any of they are bad guys :)

The finest Simon and Garfunkel song not written or performed by Simon and Garfunkel
Yeah, reminds me Simon & Garfunkel as well.
With story by Roald Dahl, not written by Roald Dahl
To me it sounds like the song 'The last thing on my mind '.. an old folk song, I know it performed by Sandy Denny.
This song is basically a reskinned version of "The Boxer", and their other song "Engine for Gabriel" is hauntingly similar to "Cecilia". It most certainly is intentional, and I love it
The beginning's harmonization reminds me of Blue October's Into the Ocean.
"Francis choked that chicken with his hands.
But watching them die,
he started to cry.
I'm bored - Francis said.
Let's steal a car."
This is just perfect.

This is my 2nd favorite music video from these very talented young men. My first favorite is Mr. Toot.
Wow me too
This is so Simon & Garfunkel! Brilliant!
I am so overwhelmed..... Great stuff :)
+kathykisslight I'm glad it was longer than the first one : ). Yay for extended singing!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤗🤗🤗
This is brilliant. Not sure how many people will "get it," but it's poignant: funny, sad, dark, & serious. Thank you.
How is this simultaneously so heartbreakingly beautiful and horrifyingly funny. I dont know what to do now, my life feels changed forever 😅😩
Damn this song is a emotional rollercoaster!
I'm sitting here smiling with tears in my eyes :')
so Ylvis, so brilliant, awesome
The "oh Margaret" part is really beautiful, and keeps it from being just a song about two crazy old guys
This is the sort of thing edgy comedian would do if they were also empathetic artists. Both pure class and pure horror. Beautiful.
I love black and white videos, and the light, and the guitars...and those fucking beautiful faces!! And Ylvis too :D Good job boys!!
simon and garfunkel! :D
+Lissi Kete I was going to write that, until I saw your comment :P
+Lissi Kete Simon and Garfuckedup.. Awesome!
+Lissi Kete Very specifically "The Boxer" haha
😜
Yeah! And they also remind me a Rhett and Link! :)
This reminds me of my grandmother and her best friend, so wholesome.
This is why the pocket translators include the sentence: My grandmother has a green revolver.
I started reading this thinking it was far fetched, but watching the video again with this in mind, it makes sense. Cool theory (:
but this is Ylvis
Cactusman129 I do relieve is simplier than that, Just two friends reuniting after a life at its end, beautiful and pure
Aaron Prendas Throwing rocks at children in a car and shooting poor innocent horses. Surely, it's beautiful and pure.
A full album of that kind of song would be awesome
simon and garfunkel is down your alley
"Life's a bitch. A wise man said. No matter what, you end up dead. And all you can wish for is a friend." This song is so silly and hilarious. But Damn this lyric really touches me. Such a good song.
Honestly this song is hilarious and the video is incredible but all I can think about when I listen to it is "those harmonies are SO SATISFYING"
This is such an excellent song - it's a shame it wasn't as popular as some of their other songs, which are just as genius.
This song is freaking beautiful... Forget about the lyrics...
American style song from Norvegians........Just fantastic
genuinely one of their greatest songs. Although vastly underrated. This needs so many more views!
Loneliness has brought back the boys in them. Very funny song. I love it.
These guys are geniuses.
Oh my god, those two actors are amazing, and their facial expressions!
Not sure if I should cry for the feels or for the joke. Man.. these guys are beyond genius!
"There're other things to life than your soft skin against mine"
I'm not married yet and I cried like a sad widower to this line.
i never believed a song about two elderly sociopaths could be so touching.
