      You could call the IJN evacuation of Guadalcanal the Japanese Dunkirk. Even though much smaller in scope they were taking huge risks when the American forces were clearly gaining an upper hand in air and sea power when the Americans had established ground force dominance.
      I was expecting the Americans to deal a crippling blow to their evacuation efforts at any time and was really surprised that it didn't happen.
      The Guadalcanal campaign was more fiercely contested than I could ever imagine on the ground, sea and air
      Much respect to the fighting skill on both sides but definitely glad we got the outcome we live with today

      Most likely very few since the Guadalcanal campaign ended in February 1943 and the war only had only 30 more months. Also most would have been transported back to Rabaul and other than some bombing raids we left that stronghold alone since it did not need to be taken. Plus with so many of these thousands being as bad off as they were it is very likely that many died after the withdraw.

      @@Briguy1027 True, they did not have so much of an issue in China since easy to get food and equipment there. But they decided to push out into the Pacific and those islands were not so get since most were jungle terrain. They lacked the needed vision of needing far more ships than they had since 10,000 men on an island need a lot of food, water and other things. They got off easy in 1942 since the torpedoes of the US back then were total crap but the US finally got that issue fixed and it was not really safe to sail after that.

    Everyone has said the Battle of Midway was the decisive battle of the Pacific War. Actually I think it was really the Guadalcanal battle that proved decisive as the Japanese had plenty of fight, initiative and potential to beat back the Allies. But afterwards the full initiative was with the Allied forces. I'm glad this channel provided excellent coverage of this battle that too often is overlooked Battle that I think again was THE decisive campaign of the Pacific War.

      I think that is more the fact that at Midway, the Americans showed they could fight and win against the Japanese is Naval Combat, while in Guadalcanal it showed the same but in Land Combat. Therefore, they both complete the American superiority from that point onwards.

    At the start of the video it was mentioned that the Japanese defeat at the Battle of Guadalcanal finally forced Japan to take a defensive stance for the remainder of the war. That may be true for the war in the Pacific theater, however it may give a false impression that Japan was always on the defensive after the battle. The fact is that Japan carried out offensive battles and campaigns in the greater Asia-Pacific War (which is a more accurate phrase than "The Pacic War") after Guadalcanal - their invasion of India in 1944 and their 1945 offensive in China are just two examples that contradict the impression that Japan was always in defensive mode after Guadalcanal.

    It's interesting that the flagships for the destroyer forces in Operation KE were destroyers. The IJN had organized destroyer squadrons with light cruisers as the flags. I wonder if this was an intentional organizational change or if the number number of available light cruisers forced this as an adaptation.

    • @Wayne.J
      @Wayne.J ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes and no.
      The forces used needed to quick, had an escort / AA defense of the newest destroyers and the destroyer crew were the cream of IJN. The CL not so, and at this point were SBD magnets for the Cactus airfield (Yura, Jinstu, Isuzu).
      The old 5.500 ton light cruisers could potentially slow them down, and had limited AA fire. Nagara(DesRon 4) and Jinstu (DesRon2) were escorting the destroyers in the main Body, brand new Agano (DesRon 10), the carriers.
      Sendai (DesRon 3) was escorting Mikawa 8th Fleets Chokai and Kumano. So they were all busy at sea as well escorting fleet elements so were potentially available.

    • @Wayne.J
      @Wayne.J ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The IJN had used DDs for most of the reinforcement runs as well, the few times CLs were present, they were escorting BBs or CAs while bombarding Henderson field, leaving out Savo with CruDiv 18 and Yubari (DesRon 6 flagship)

      @@Wayne.J, IJN CLs seem to have been pretty fast (ignoring wear and possibly fouling of their hulls), but being 1920s designs and in 1942, their AA capabilities were probably not very good by IJN standards. Good point!

    Read a book about WWII surface combat in the Pacific, between the IJN and the Allies. The gist of it was that surface ships, not carrier battles, were the main cause of Japan's defeat (this includes submarine warfare). This goes against everything we 'know' about the Pacific War, but there is something to be said for the cumulative affect of dozens of small engagements. A part of that discussion is the so-called fanaticism of the Japanese, including suicidal choices. But a broader view shows the Allies making similar choices until about mid-1943. Consider the small nighttime engagements with the obviously superior IJN, which usually resulted in thousands of Allied deaths and the loss of more warship tonnage. One idea was that US officers, in transferring over large areas of industrial home soil, saw the massive material and ship constructions, understanding that what was at the tip of the spear represented a small fraction of what was coming. This allowed them to bet long odds, like a poker player with a large stack of chips. The Japanese command saw the opposite: damaged ships waiting in ports for repairs that would never start, hunger and fuel shortages, enemies at all points of the compass plus the Soviet hammer ready to fall at any moment, while stuck in an unbeatable China. Despite their Bushido code and desire for a Good Death, these were calculating people, who often held back from total commitment of the last reserve, waiting to fight in a (hopefully) better position tomorrow.

      I'll cover it. We thought we could win, the British came, we camped out in the post office, and we got bombarded, surrounded, and surrendered. All our leaders were murdered which led to micky collins

      @@JW-jd6sn You're explaining history I already know ma chara lol thanks for the recap anyway. However we didn't just establish a base in the GPO, the biscuit factory, local brewery and linen factories. Would love to see the perspectives of Kings and Generals, especially the maps and how the leaders were executed.

    Finally, Guadalcanal is over. Hopefully, the Japanese will have learned of the folly of in deep defense in this scenario, seeing the waste of resources and men it is, and the rest of island hoping US American invasions will go much smoother. With a much lesser loss of lifes and destruction. Right?

      The success of Operation KE was primarily due to the failure of Allied intelligence to decipher the new Japanese radio communication codes implemented on 1 January, 1943. Based on its misinterpretation of the Japanese force buildup, on 26 January the Allied Pacific Command's intelligence section Informed Allied forces in the Pacific that the Japanese were preparing for a new offensive in either the Solomons or New Guinea. This had a major impact on the outcome of the operation, as both Patch and Halsey were bluffed into adopting a "wait-and-see" posture and not taking advantage of their ground, aerial, and naval superiority to prevent the successful Japanese evacuation.
