WHOA when she found a cane toad my first thought 'oh invasive?' but NO! Costa Rica is their actual home that's crazy! I'm so used to them being the status of invasive species I completely forgot where they are supposed to live.
yup. One crazy thing is they're native as far north as south Texas. So they're native pretty close to where I am but invasive over in Florida. Extremely underrated as pets - and ethical to buy 'wild' caught, since they're generally wild-caught in their Florida invasive range. They're like a (subjectively) more handsome, more hardy pixie frog.
The poison cane toads secrete is actually called Bufotoxin, and its really potent. A purified version is or was used for heart surgery because of how it relaxes vascular muscle.
It's also the reason my common European toad is called beauford, because of his Latin name being bufo bufo which is where the name of the toxin comes from
That spiny-tailed opening his mouth was hilarious for some reason. And the refusal to bite. (I would have used a leaf to test that though...) The common Mexican tree frog hunkering down on Emily's hand was just so sweet. Emily's different shirts: 5 Ed's different shirts: 3
@@_Fizel_ This is what I saw: Black sparkly tank, Black prism t-shirt, Grey rose patterned t, Blue caffeine t, Black snake patterned tank. I totally missed one of Ed's shirt changes. lol
@@Vickie-Bligh Ah I thought the two tanks were the same one. Hard to see if the first shot has the snake pattern on it plus the second one is sparkly as well, and she is wearing the same headlamp unlike in other shots. And yeah you just see a red shirt in the montage after his glow in the dark Snake Discovery shirt. Also can't see the shirt front during the teeny tiny house gecko so I can't count it but it may be the same as his snake clip so...
They've developed a new trap in Australia using the pheromones of cane toad tadpoles to trap other cane toad tadpoles (since of course they're cannibalistic). It's great because it only targets cane toad tadpoles, not native species, and can remove thousands of potential toads from the environment with very minimal effort.
Hi! Costa Rican here! One time I saved an iguana from one of my dogs and it was really funny because it just kept still the whole time I was holding it to see if it was hurt in any way (it wasn't) I left it alone for like 10 minutes and when I came back it was trying to run away again (although it was on a ceramic floor and it just kept sort of frantically moving its legs without moving). Eventually I returned it to the wild and a couple of months afterwards I saw it again in perfect health.
The wealth of information that Emily and Ed have on so many species, never ceases to amaze me! Like the way Emily was identifying each reptile was so impressive, while still taking the time to double check and being more than willing to admit that she could have it wrong.

Some ravens here in Australia have learned that you can flip cane toads over and eat them from the belly in. But it’s taken a lot of trial and error for them. They’re still a huge problem and invasive pest here.

This video brought back so many Costa Rica memories for me! I went there on a summer class trip in high school and saw SO MANY cool creatures! There was a huge group of green iguanas hanging out in a tree outside our hotel, and house geckos in our hotel rooms. One night, I was walking along a path like you were showing, and thought I saw a pile of horse manure (there were horses wandering the property where we were staying) but then it HOPPED AWAY, it was a giant toad of some kind! Never got a close enough look. Also saw a sea turtle laying eggs on the beach in the middle of the night during a thunderstorm. An unbelievable and unforgettable experience. Thank you for rejuvenating those memories!!
The amount of happiness I get by looking at a toads grumpy face is immeasurable😂 they’re just so freaking cute. Even though they’re invasive in some areas, I would absolutely love to have a cane toad of my own.
excellent and educational video, glad you guys did the googly on the cat-eye, it is important to let people know that double checking and looking up information is ok and should be done. love the vibe here, ya'll really are making huge strides in education, and it is what I am here for.
It was so cool to see a Cane Toad where its meant to be! I'm so used to them been considered a horrible creature that must be eradicated. I'd really only ever heard of people going out to catch them to kill them. (In Australia)
One of the (many) cool reptiles I got to see in Costa Rica was a cat-eyed snake (different species but same family) that was stalking a little lizard (no idea what species). Initially, we were determined to watch the whole process and see if the lizard got eaten or if it escaped, but the snake was moving SOOOOOOOOOOOO SSSSSSSSLOOOOOOOOOOOOOW that we gave up, went for a hike, came back, tried again, and gave up again. The lizard was still sitting there being cute and the snake was still moving a millimeter at a time closer to its prey, like a possessed stick in a weird tropical horror movie.
Thank you, Snake Discovery, for always being such fun and entertaining channel... today of all days, this morning I found out my pet snake had died overnight from an unknown reason. This video was the one thing that helped me feel a little better for a bit.
Ed please tell Emily this: you should make a giant board with all your feathers on it and under each feather is information on each bird or it could be a challenge to see who can name the most birds
Most people on vacation at night: Sleeping or laying in a hotel bed watching a movie. Emily and Ed: I know we should be sleeping in those comfortable beds, but we're never been to Costa Rica before so let's go film some quick footage of a few creatures. Then sleep until lunchtime. Me: I know these two enough, there's nothing quick about this nighttime adventure.
They likely adopted a sleep schedule that is not that dissimilar from my own. The sleep schedule will be going to bed somewhere around 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. waking up somewhere between noon and 2:00 but otherwise just going about your day normally
@@the_undead I would agree if it wasn't for the facility building update videos. They confirmed they hated working from 6 am to 10 pm, meaning they don't do it often. I'm not sure how they do it, but about once a month they go on some nighttime adventure to see the nocturnal animals. Though, half that time now is dedicated to watching their nocturnal reptiles they acquired for their zoo.
@@notyesbetothefallssorcerer3272 they probably hated working 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. because that is a 16 hour shift. Also like Emily said in the video pretty much all reptiles in Costa Rica are nocturnal, so you're going to have to be awake at night and if you're going to be awake pretty much all night looking for reptiles and you may as well adopt a sleep schedule that allows you to be awake mostly at night,
@@the_undead I don't they might work overtime, through their facility opens at noon and closes at 8pm, but they half the time there at midnight. So their sleep schedule is probably between 10pm and 10am, as they try to show up about a hour or 2 before opening hours.

I have a boa constrictor myself and I just have a sweet spot for boas in general 😁 I also loved that iguana when he was doing his I’m so tough don’t mess with me posture, but didn’t even bite Emily when she stuck her hand right in his face 😂
Fun fact: Most snakes aren't immune to their own venom, and can bite themselves accidentally and be affected by the venom. King Browns, (Most venomous snake in the world!) are an example of this.
All of those animals are so adorable. I think my favorite was the Ctentosaura similis. I feel like if those lizards stayed that size, they would be perfect. The Cat eyed snake was cool too!
House geckos(house lizards as we call them here) are basically one of the most versatile lizards ever. They lay their eggs everywhere hidden. They are also known for their "laughing" sound that sometimes coincide when youre having a hard time which makes it seem that theyre laughing at you.
(talking about the frog) "and this is full size, too!" me over here, always amazed at what frogs are considered small, because the only frog or toad I've ever seen in the wild is a pacific tree frog. They grow to 2" max, apparently. I have never seen one more than about an inch and a half long lol.
That little iguana was all bark but no bite!! Meaning... he was climbing up the bark... 😂 sorry bad joke! But great finds!! I especially love the baby house gecko. Those eyes were adorable!
The second you showed that cane toad, I immediately swore 😅 I’m Australian, and where I used to live we had a tooon of cute little frogs, but over the years the cane toad population took over, which completely broke my heart :(( it’s pretty cool to see them in their natural habitat though!
Looks like you guys stayed close to where my husband and I stayed at the nayara resort. I love Costa Rica it's the happiest place on earth. Pura vida guys!! Ps Ed looks awesome in the glow in the dark shirt!
I am from Costa Rica, I have been watching your channel for such a long time, it makes me so happy that you came and enjoyed our wildlife! Hope you come back one day :)
growing up in Australia, i often went cane toad hunting as a kid (collecting live ones for euthanasia) my area was flooded with them and they were terrible for the environment here. there were big metal bins where you can leave cane toads, dead or alive and they'll be picked up in the morning, sorted, euthanised and safely disposed of
The spiny tailed Iguana was awesome!! The bite test was funny. When the spiny Tails reach adulthood, their first instinct is to tail whip and stun their prey!! They will only bite after the prey has been stunned by the tail. They also grow to enormous sizes. My Aunt was tail whipped accidentally and required physical therapy for years. She kept her iguana for years after all that!
That one in the beginning looks like the kind that sometimes appear in my grandma's house in the Philippines! She calls them our little friends because they eat the bugs haha
I was shocked to see Emily casually holding the cane toad because as a kid I watched a sensationalized documentary about them which portrayed them as a terrifying all-powerful beast which can kill you on contact. It was nice to see what they are actually like in their native habitat and learn that they can be handled! It sucks that they are so uncontrollable as an invasive species but I'm glad I learned more about them from this video. Thanks for sharing your herping adventures Emily and Ed! I wish you could have found a boa, that would have been awesome!
I find it strange that the animals are generally feared, like snakes, lizards are the most handleable even in the wild. I just can't imagine a wild cat for example would have been so peaceful.
Oh gosh, knowing that you were here I would have invited you home, we could have gone herping!! Please next time remember this if you ever come back to Costa Rica, more than invited!!
Ohh the toad was amazing as I learned about them in Australia. I was shocked because the guide killed it without any warning but explained it afterwards. Some Australien citizens will lick same as you said because of the hallucinogen.

OMG as a native Costa Rican this video makes me so happy, I was just watching your Florida invasive species video and it made me think back to my child hood when my cousin, friends, and I would go outside after school and look for different reptiles, spiders, and flowers. The bird noises do not bother me, to me they it sounds/reminds me of natures melody.
Funny herping story. I once found a huge legless lizard and managed to catch it. Not before it slapped me in the face with his tail and musked all over me
Hi Emily and Ed, over here In Australia, we have the freshwater snake or keelback (Tropidonophis mairii) that eats cane toads and is successful if it doesn’t eat too many. Also, some dogs get ‘high’ licking the backs of cane toads.
@@stephaniebarden8926 I'm in Queensland with the same crow, them and water rats can eat cane toads by avoiding the toxin glands, it's a learnt behaviour passed on through the generations, I think its quite common in the population now though
What I like about Snake Discovery is that even the topics I don't think I'll find interesting, I end up loving because Emily and Ed are so engaging and funny

Glad to see them taking time off!!
I lived in Costa Rica for about a year and it is so cool to watch you guys run around at night catching animals
(talking about the frog) "and this is full size, too!"
me over here, always amazed at what frogs are considered small, because the only frog or toad I've ever seen in the wild is a pacific tree frog. They grow to 2" max, apparently. I have never seen one more than about an inch and a half long lol.
I'm stuck at home with pneumonia. Been binge watching all the SD I can. Thanks for helping me feel not so crappy.
That little iguana was all bark but no bite!! Meaning... he was climbing up the bark... 😂 sorry bad joke! But great finds!! I especially love the baby house gecko. Those eyes were adorable!
Watching this as my first video of the new year! WOOOOO!!!!
The second you showed that cane toad, I immediately swore 😅 I’m Australian, and where I used to live we had a tooon of cute little frogs, but over the years the cane toad population took over, which completely broke my heart :(( it’s pretty cool to see them in their natural habitat though!
Your herping videos make me so happy. I love to learn, and your energy really gets me excited. Lol
I love you guys and your vlogs are amazing happy new year to you both ♥️
Ah, you folks are so cool! Thanks for taking the time to show us these very cool animals! ❤️😎
Looks like you guys stayed close to where my husband and I stayed at the nayara resort. I love Costa Rica it's the happiest place on earth. Pura vida guys!!
Ps Ed looks awesome in the glow in the dark shirt!
I feel like every second video with Ed and Emily has something along the line "Lets see if this bites." And I live for it
I love when you guys go herping it’s been so long since you’ve her
Whoever reads this Happy New Year!
They put out a herping video about a month ago! (Even though it was in trash). Definitely check it out if you haven’t, happy new year!!
Happy new year snake discovery😁🐍
As someone from the Caribbean, this is probably the closest I’ll come to seeing you guys with reptiles that are literally in my yard lol 😆
I am from Costa Rica, I have been watching your channel for such a long time, it makes me so happy that you came and enjoyed our wildlife! Hope you come back one day :)
i would love it if you guys could do a video all about grey tree frogs!
I have watched your channel for two and a half years I love snake discovery
growing up in Australia, i often went cane toad hunting as a kid (collecting live ones for euthanasia) my area was flooded with them and they were terrible for the environment here. there were big metal bins where you can leave cane toads, dead or alive and they'll be picked up in the morning, sorted, euthanised and safely disposed of
The spiny tailed Iguana was awesome!!
It's a house gecko, and I think they do live in the Philippines! And I think that's why they're called house geckos.
This channel really help me get over my fear of reptiles and spiders now I want a snake but my family hates snakes
Emily: *talking about the toxins the toad would release if she threatened it enough*
Ed: "Poke him" 😈
I was shocked to see Emily casually holding the cane toad because as a kid I watched a sensationalized documentary about them which portrayed them as a terrifying all-powerful beast which can kill you on contact.
You guys make brilliant content that lifts the world
Oh gosh, knowing that you were here I would have invited you home, we could have gone herping!! Please next time remember this if you ever come back to Costa Rica, more than invited!!
Yay I woke up to a snake discovery video and my hognose finally shed! He looks so pretty!
Ohh the toad was amazing as I learned about them in Australia. I was shocked because the guide killed it without any warning but explained it afterwards. Some Australien citizens will lick same as you said because of the hallucinogen.
Happy New Years Emily and Ed!
Animals found:
House gecko
Baby house gecko
Black bandit cat-eyed snake
Young spiny tailed iguana
Another black bandit cat-eyed snake
Common Mexican tree frog
Cane toad
I literally love your herping videos 🤩. I miss when you used to post more of them.
Omg, I love to see you enjoy my country. I wish I could come across you, will you be visiting the Arenal Volcano?
OMG as a native Costa Rican this video makes me so happy, I was just watching your Florida invasive species video and it made me think back to my child hood when my cousin, friends, and I would go outside after school and look for different reptiles, spiders, and flowers.
The bird noises do not bother me, to me they it sounds/reminds me of natures melody.
Funny herping story. I once found a huge legless lizard and managed to catch it. Not before it slapped me in the face with his tail and musked all over me
6:58 thanks Emily and Ed this is now my screen saver
I think everyone (including the frogs) would appreciate you using gloves when handling amphibians. Liked the video, but you know...
Watching this video was a lot of fun. It goes to show that Costa Rica is an awesome place for wildlife.
Hi Emily and Ed, over here In Australia, we have the freshwater snake or keelback (Tropidonophis mairii) that eats cane toads and is successful if it doesn’t eat too many. Also, some dogs get ‘high’ licking the backs of cane toads.
Crows will also flip them over and eat them upside down to avoid the toxins
@Beemo, I have one 😂 we toad proofed our yard because of it.
@@nursingandoutdoors I didn’t know that, but we don’t have crows where I am, except sometimes the migratory torresian crow
The baby house gecko was SO cute!
15:40 Ed is like poke him👉🐸 🤣😂to funny. Keep safe & have a great time. Thanks for your time
That baby iguana false bite was so cute! 🥺
We love seeing our king and queen *attempt* to vacation. But I don’t think it counts since they still filmed this amazing experience for us. Can’t wait to hear that they went on an actual vacation and actually spent the whole time vacationing.
