    This is a follow up to my earlier video "Refilling Pilot Pen without mauling your pen". After making the video, people were asking me about the syringe and I myself was not able to find a suitable syringe that could fit over the Varsity. I began to think of various methods that could allow me to use syringes that I could easily buy.
    I finally found that a coupling made of a flexible, clear, transparent PVC tube whose internal diameter was 3/8", gave the best results. It was not too tight or loose.
    If u find it difficult to find a suitable syringe and PVC tube, let me know. I have some spare tubing left and can put a set together for u. US$5 should cover PayPal charges and shipping to anywhere in the world.
    PS: In case u are wondering, it is the same "shorty" pen from previous video.
    PPS: This refilling method works for Uniball Eye, Pilot Hi-techpoint pen and any pen that makes use of water soluble liquid ink.

    GREAT video!!! I bought some transparent tubing at the hardware store as a coupling between the Varsity and the syringe. My (pet) syringe is from my veterinarian's. Worked like a charm! Now I'm going to finally use up ALL my ink samples and my Varsity is none the worse for wear! Thanks!

    Best method of refilling the Varsity so far. No chance of damaging the nib n feed. Also so muck cleaner.

    I just used this method to first empty, then refill a Uniball Vision Elite with the only deviation from your instructions being to use a 3/8" hose clap as well to ensure a proper seal on the Uniball.
    The result was very acceptable with minimal loss of ink and the small amount that was wasted was due to the fact that I initially did not have the hose clamp tight enough.
    The pen writes perfectly with no leaks and best of all, a set of pliers were not required :)
    Thank you for the tutorial - simply brilliant.

      U're most welcome. Using the clamp was brilliant! I didn't know such small clamps existed. Btw did u try a different ink in the pen? What ink was that? According to write ups, it is some special ink that can't be washed away. I am afraid that if two different inks are mixed, ink coagulation in the fibre feed occurs and the pen is bye bye. I am still waiting for the ink in my uniball to finish before trying to refill it.

      Kenneth Lee uh-oh haha that doesn't sound promising.. I am indeed running a mixture of inks now at approx 1/3 uniball blue ink and 2/3 parker quink black. They seem to have mixed just fine delivering a nice bold color suitable for the workplace no problem.
      update - well I have about 2 pages of test writing and so far so good *crosses fingers* I will repost in a few days to let you know the fate of my uniball.
      update - day 2 and all is well. the vision elite with the mixed ink is working perfectly as is a uniball ub-157 that i refilled earlier. looks good and im quite happy as the uniballs are excellent pens.

      84rk1n Hi, I am wondering how did you use this method to refill a Uniball vision elite? For pilot varsity or pilot vball pen, you can pull out the nib and plastic reed easily, also the reed didn't seal the plastic barrel completely. So you can either pull it out completely or use this vacuumed way to refill the ink...I prefer to pull the entire reed and nib out, so I can clean the ink completely. But for Uniball vision elite... it looks like the plastic reed is sealed with the barrel completely.... how the ink can be vacuumed into the barrel? Thank you.

    • @84rk1n
      @84rk1n 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ll1100000 Hello :) With the method described in the video you do not have to pull out the feed at all.
      All you have to do is just push the 3/8" hose over the pen and then tighten it down a little with a hose clamp to compensate for the smaller diameter of the rollerball barrel. I also place a small piece of elastic band in between the hose and clamp to guarantee a seal.
      The pens can be cleaned very thoroughly just by forcing water into the pen, flip the pen nib down and vacuum it back out after which you take off the syringe and dump the inky water down the drain. Pull clean water into the syringe and repeat as often as necessary until you get the pen as clean as you like. This method ensures you a totally clean pen and no risk of damage or wear to the feed.
      I have done this to 3 Vision Elites and 1 UB157 using both Parker and Noodler's inks with the pens writing as good as new. This is by far the best method of cleaning and filling disposable fountain or rollerball pens that I have found.
      Hope this helps.

      Thx for the confirmation that Parker's ink work well on the Vision Elites after a thorough cleaning. I'm going to try it out as well once mine runs out of ink!!! :-)

    I thought I was the only one to think of this! You can go to virtually any hardware store and ask for "clear vinyl tubing". Bring your pen so you can make sure it fits, but be careful, it can get stuck!

    my God, it is so easy to pull out the nib/feed combo of a Varsity BY HAND (I use a piece of rubber sheeting, and am always gratified by that resounding POP when the nib assembly comes out) and refill my varsity with an eyedropper bottle of ink. Very gratifying and much easier than all these convoluted methods of refill that make me think they are shilling fir the manufacturer of something like a syringe or something.....

    • @richardclintone
      @richardclintone 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sdovas Do you ever get leaks when refilling by pulling out the nib?

    • @leewmlee
      @leewmlee  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sdovas, i did this for a time as well well. some of my pens were very stiff and i couldn't pull out the feed by hand. had to use a pair of pliers and when it popped out, i couldn't control my strength. this resulted in broken fins and the nib holder part also broke. Hence, the search for a non-destructive method. i'm quite sure that during the manufacturing process, after filling in the ink, the machine just pops in the feed.

    • @leewmlee
      @leewmlee  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the feed doesn't break, u're home free. i've never encountered any leaks by pulling out the nib/feed assembly and popping it back in again. the space of the fins near the nib is bigger than the fins near the barrel. this causes the whatever excess ink to flow up, away from the nib, towards the barrel. as ink is being used up, the ink that collects at the top will be sucked back into the barrel again. very elegant design. things that will kill the pen permanently is using the wrong ink or fungus/mould that gums up the fiber feed.

      I haven't, but of course this remains a disposable pen and as such the cheap nib will inevitably bend or become distorted and in my case that eventually meant beyond usability.
      so a few refills have been fine, but after a while cheap is cheap. my daughters love their colorful Varsities, I've moved on.
      It remains a great pen for the price.

    • @sdovas

      Kenneth Lee
      I understand completely. see my reply to mr. Clintone above, I simply cannot ascribe enough value to a US $2.99 pen to go as far as you're suggesting in your video. more power to those who have the patience and care to do it, however, they will be rewarded with truly inexpensive value writing implement. I've moved on, and at present my budget pen of choice is a Noodler's Charlie, which came free with a great bottle of ink I bought, and has far more structural integrity than the Varsity, as great a pen as that fine instrument may be.

      Doggielover13 Doggie, I bought a plastic hose like this: www.solucoesindustriais.com.br/images/produtos/imagens_245/p_flexible-transparent-fep-tube-fep-hose-plasticjpg and works fine. In Brazil (specially in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro) it's easy to found this. I'm sincere. If you have any doubts, please tell us.
      Today I'm using a Lamy with ink cartridge and I fill it with syringe.

    I want to try this but I don't know where to find PVC pipes that small. Can you essentially hack oboth sides of the 5ml syringe and attach the pen and 3ml syringe to simulate the PVC pipe?

    • @leewmlee
      @leewmlee  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If u can find a 5ml syringe that fits the section of the varsity pen tightly, pls see my other youtube video, "refill pilot pen". There is no need to have this coupling. I still hv some spare tubes/syringes from my experiments that I can send u.

      Try a medical supply store. They often have various sizes of flexible tubes that will work--stuff like IV tubes.

    can this be done with Monte Blanc Meisterstuck 149 fountain pen? really not mauling the mechanism of piston inside?

    • @leewmlee
      @leewmlee  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If for some reason the piston of your mb pen got stuck inside the barrel and u dont hv time to send it in for repair, this method will allow u to refill the pen :-)
      But if the piston seal leaks, it wont work.
      Btw, the cost of the mb repair will allow u to buy a hundred Varsities!

    Has anyone tried to refill a dry felt/fiber tip with the syringe method?

    • @leewmlee
      @leewmlee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hv tried it with the Pilot Sign pen and am happy to say that it works. However, Sharpies don't work. Waterproof felt pens won't work unless u can find an equivalent ink with similar solvent. Fiber pens that use a tube full of absorbent material to hold ink would be quite messy to fill with this method. better to use a syringe/needle and inject ink straight into the tube; assuming that it uses water soluble ink.

    how did you clean the paint on the pen? I tried to deep the paper tower with nail polish remover, but it is very hard to clean it, it took me more than 1 hour to just remove one pen... by the way, did you cut the pen for shorter?

    • @leewmlee
      @leewmlee  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't really notice the missing paint until u mentioned it. It got worn out through years of constant use. Unfortunately, sometime in 2014, it dropped out of pants pocket. Sniff sniff. U're right about me cutting it a bit shorter (about 3/4"). I used a generic tube cutter to cut it cleanly. I've since made another :-). Just be sure to cut some V slots in the collar of the end cap so that it would fit into the rear of the cut pen. Otherwise it will make the end swell and the cap won't post properly.

      I've watched another vid in which someone sanded off the paint, leaving the pen a hazy translucent whitish colour though which it's possible to see the ink level.

      Kenneth Lee Thank you for the reply. I normally fill these varsity pens by pulling out the whole reed. It is very easy to pull it out after heating the plastic barrel under my desk lamp. I really enjoyed these varsity fountain pens until I found out pilot Precise V pen!!!! The varsity fountain pen is great, however, same as other fountain pens, the ink can bleed through or feathering on low quality paper, even on the regular 20lb ink jet printing paper.........The Pilot precise V pen is also water based pen, but the needle nibs control the ink flows very well, and reduce the bleed or feathering appearance dramatically while enjoying the colorful inks. Of course, you can use the vacuum method to refill them... It is not easy to pull the reed out for a pilot Precise V pen.....:)

      I use acetone free nail polish remover. Put some on a work rag then vigorously rub the area to be cleaned.
      15 minutes and a pen barrel is clean with no clouding.

    • @leewmlee
      @leewmlee  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kader Mohideen , yes u can indeed! They use the same air exchange design. The syringe diameter has to be a wee bit smaller. Outside diameter is 10mm, inside diameter is 9mm. If u can't find a suitable syringe, use a plastic tube adapter. Pls find my other video. :-)

  • @tdogfpv
    @tdogfpv 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    what syringe size?

    • @leewmlee
      @leewmlee  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's a very old 3ml syringe whose internal diameter was 9mm. However, searching for such a syringe was a great challenge. Spent a year trying to find it; all were either too small or too large. Hence I produced another video using a flexible tube coupling. That way the syringe external diameter can vary. So as long as the tube can fit tightly over the syringe. if the syringe is too skinny, u can wrap it with white plumber's tape before the fitting the tube over it.
