    man...what i can say. i had vpen i bought more than 20 years ago and of course it ran out of ink more than 20 years ago. i kept it for sentimental porpuses because it was the first fountain pen i ever had. it was a beautiful discovery that made me a huge fan of fountain pens. i kept it also bacuse it represented a time when i was young and full of dreams, the other day i tried to refill it, to use it again but couldnt...but i still kept it, thoug i was tempted to throw it away... but for some strange thing i didnt...i didnt even finished the video when i was trying to refill it, and you know what, it worked!!!!!
    i almost cried, since i love that part of my life and the vpen that started a beautiful hooby. am so freaking thankful for this video, i really am!!!

      Thank you for experimenting and subsequently posting your results! I just ran out of the original ink in my V-pen. I love this V-pen more than my expensive technical needle pens by Kohi- noor & Rapidograph (which i bought 50 years ago for drafting class) because when I use the waterproof ink in them they both seem to dry up while i am trying to sketch and they get clogged up by the fast drying varnish in my waterproof ink and i am constantly dismantling the Kohi-noor & Rapidograph pens to clean and I usually manage to damage the tiny needles. I was going to try waterproof ink in my 60 yr old refillable Shaeffer fountain pens but the pens cannot be taken apart to clean and the ink chamber has very small capacity. So finding your instructions is the perfect solution! Thank you, Teoh, for sharing! I have lots of fountain pens because that is what people my age used before the invention of ball point pens ( yes, i admit to bring THAT old😥. My fountain pens are older than 60 years old and are a joy to use. Pity they don't make good reliable things like they used to. Thanks again, Teoh, for also sharing all your Urban Sketching info and reviews!
      It is a pity most people use cheap, wasteful, disposable ball points, many of which blotch!!

      My cousin bought me a V-pen two years ago, and I don't like throwing away usable things :) so I learned to take it apart. I had a hard time, as Teoh shows it can be difficult to remove and replace, but it is achievable. I refill mine with regular fountain pen ink (I don't need waterproof), I just like to use different colors in the pen. For a "cheap" pen, these write very nicely. Thanks for the video - I am happy I am doing it correctly! :)

    this works with the vast majority of single use liquid ink pens. technical drawing ink and diluted inkjet ink (ink/water 1/5 - 1/10) work excellent.
    if they clog, it's almost always the felt-like wick, feeding the ink to the nib isself. on many you can pull it out and rinse with water. let is soak in alcohol for an hour, if necessary.

  • @Rime_Di_Michelangelo

    Warning: Don't use pliers for this operation. Run the tip and section through warm water for a minute, grip the nib between your fingers firmly with the help of some rubber material, I use rubber gloves for cleaning chores around the house, and pull it out this way.

    To reduce risk of damaging the pen, try the "vacuum syringe with coupling" method in youtube. The pens will last indefinitely until one makes the mistake of forgetting to cap the pen. One the dried ink clog up the fiber feed, it's a gonna unless one can find a suitable solvent.

  • @RyoCook
    @RyoCook 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    Thanks for showing. This nib on the VPen is really good, it's so smooth. But it's a shame to produce so much plastic garbage for a fountain pen. This is a great method to reuse it several times.
    I'll use Herbin ink with it, or Rohrer & Klingner. For me it's not about the money (the ink is numerous times more expensive), but to use this excellent fountain pen (!) more than once and producing less garbage.

      It's shameful that pilot and other manufacturers are so willing to continue making disposable plastic pens. Specially in the fountain pen market where you don't have to worry about this horrible problem that is disposable plastic products
      Around 100 billion Bic disposable pens have been produced, how many of them do you think ended up polluting nature? A lot of them

  • @donna30044
    @donna30044 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Using pliers is an excellent way to crush the feed or bend the nib, ruining the pen forever.
    Use a thin sheet of silicone rubber or use nitrile gloves to grip the pen and nib. Gently wiggle, twist, and pull the nib and feed, gripping the top and bottom. Be persistent but not overly aggressive and it will happen.

    • @finalbossd
      @finalbossd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’d also recommend wrapping the nib and feed in tape, using a little extra to make a flap, then just pull the thing out. I used that to remove the nib from a wing sung.

    Ha Ha Ha! Thanks for sharing! I have been trying to refill the same disposable pens as well, but was unable to extract the nib part from the handle. Now I know how, thanx to you! So good to hear I am not the only artist trying to save a buck or two! I think the waterproof ink I use has a tiny bit of shellac in it, which would make any clogs inside the nib housing block the flow of ink. Isopropyl rubbing alcohol can dissolve shellac (it is quite inexpensive here in North America, and probably out in Singapore, too?). You may want to soak your nib in it...the same way you would clean a printer head...place a bit of rubbing alcohol in a smaller snack sized ziplock bag with your nib head and shake..allow to soak overnight. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out. Right now I think I have a life time supply of ink & pens, miniature watercolour palettes, tiny water bottles...

    I worked in a shop that sold "fine" pens. Pilot Precise pens are smoother-writing, and have a more consistently clean, dark, and sharp line than any Waterman, Mont Blanc, etc. If you want some expensive plastic junk, though, grab yourself a Mont Blanc.

  • @ajovev
    @ajovev 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    If the v5 is clogged after some refilling, maybe it helps to take out the feed and soak into a cup of warm water overnight. This way I cleaned completely a very old rollerball and then refilled it.

    Thank you! I really like your videos - I have watched a bunch of them, and subscribed to your channel. This was very helpful, because two of my Pilot Varsity pens are almost out of ink, and refilling with waterproof ink is going to be GREAT for my watercoloring. I have been using micron pens, but sometimes a nib is preferable to the softer tip. I think you are an amazing artist, by the way. I love your street scenes especially.

    FYI, a rag soaked w/ acetone will remove all of the markings from the exterior surface of a Varsity pen barrel, turning it into a clear “demonstrator”. It takes a bit of rubbing, but it’s less than a 5-minute project.

    if you plug a toothpick split down the middle of the felt core of the varsity feed, you can put it in a Platinum Preppy to get the best of both worlds. Smooth Vpen nib and refillable Preppy body.
    Likewise, if you put the Preppy nib section into the Vpen, it's a slightly looser fit that you can pull out with your fingers (but is still a snug snap so it doesn't leak) so that it's much easier to refill.

    A slightly easier way would be to drill a small hole in the back under the end cap you could then fill the end with silicon then whenever you need to refill you push the needle through the silicon and inject the ink into the pen then replace the end cap. I imagine pulling the pen apart out the front like this will eventually break the abs plastic or stretch the pen housing so it comes out easier and easier...

    I tried this method with an old and scratchy V-pen I had saved hoping one day someone as curious and able as you would come up with a suggestion. THIS WORKS well with Noodler's black "Bullet Proof" ink! I use it for sketching outdoors. The reservoir contains a reasonable charge and it won't be a big deal if I damage or loose it. Many thanks

      I heard that the clogging is mainly due to the Rotring ink itself. More dense/think. Can you confirm that?

    • @raviart88
      @raviart88 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Edrollable
      Yes, you are right that clogging in this case id mainly because of the Rotring ink. Clogging becomes inevitable just after the refilling the pen and first use. However, as +Teoh Yi Chie mentioned that as the Uniball Eye/Vision pens already come with permanent ink that there is no need to refill it with a permanent ink. Also, I feel that these pens are reasonably priced in India right now. Hoping, this helps.

    Best to wear disposable rubber gloves. Also, rather than using tissue, wrap a thick elastic rubber band or piece of rubber anti-slip material around the nib and feed. Some people remove the nib separately. Yes, be sure not to overfill (you can also use an eyedropper instead if preferred). Once it is filled, allow the pen to stand, nib facing downwards for five minutes or so before using. Overall, this is not an easy procedure, but very satisfying when it works … one less piece of plastic going to landfill!

    Just did this with my v pen. Went quite smooth; I put tape on the nib, and didn't need pliers. I put Winsor&Newton Indian ink in it. Read somewhere that the v pens have quite a robust feeder system that tolerates indian ink (turns out it doesn't, see edit below). The pen works for now, and when it cloggs, no great loss ( would not put this ink in my normal fountain pens, I am planning to try out specially formulated water resistant inks for those).
    Wonder if it is prudent to keep the pen in a closed container with a water sponge to keep it from drying out...?
    Edit, DO NOT USE INDIAN INK🤣. The experiment failed. First It looked pretty good, good flow, nice lines, and I thought it would be a good way to have a fountainpen on the go with a water resistant ink. Well that didn't last long, it stopped writing pretty soon after the refill, I assume it clogged.

    • @edzejandehaan9265
      @edzejandehaan9265 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ha, the experiment is ongoing; I wrapped soaking wet tissue around the nib and waited an hour, lo and behold, it started up again🤪. So I might be able to use it, but I think it is rather unreliable.....

    • @WantedVisual
      @WantedVisual 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. Unless specifically stated otherwise, fountain pens are designed to work with water soluble inks. If you fill it with something that is not water soluble, it will eventually clog (as the tecpoint did for him) and be a pain to clean out without damaging the pen's internal plastics.
