We need to go to see Babymetal live! This is hands down one the craziest wildest live performance of all time! Ive never seen or heard anything like this. The amount of energy in the crowd let alone the band was truly mind blowing. I would literally go to a Babymetal show just to feel that kind of energy in the atmosphere. That was one of the most energetic crowd I’ve ever seen. the stage presence/show, visuals, lighting, theatrics, performance, I can’t even imagine the countless hours and time it took to put something like this together. It was like watching a Horror Musical Broadway show. I mean the seance/sacrifice demon summoning cult scene? That was outstanding. But I’m still not sure why they put a neck brace on her? Anyway, it’s such a crazy contrast of these 3 singers and this heavy intense metal band but I absolutely love it! We went straight from getting sucked down a rabbit to straight down the Foxhole that is Babymetal. Can’t wait to check out what other kind of crazy wild
Madness this band has to offer. GAME OVER

Trust me we all are mad for go to a live concert, sadly they're currently on hiatus but releasing snippets of new songs on their exclusive platform only for fans, so sooner or later we're gonna have a new single or album release hopefully.
The neckbrace first show up at Headbanger!! official MV, and is part of the lore as well a tribute to Yoshiki, a songwriter composer and one of the founder member of X-Japan, he's like a semi-god for Japanese, he hurts himself while performing playing the drums (he also plays the piano) and headbanging so hard during a live concert, some surgeries were even needed and after that he use to wear neckbrace to prevent headbang or "hedoban". That is a symbol of the ultimate metal spirit, i don't think any metal legend on the west can flex saying I headbang so hard that I broke my neck playing a live concert lol 🦊🤘

    • @Zedem0n
      @Zedem0n 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

The neckbrace is a symbol they often use and is linked to their track called "Headbanger". It's a reference/homage to X-Japan's drummer Yoshiki. X-Japan is an oldschool and well respected rock band from Japan. The story goes Yoshiki was headbanging so hard he was made to wear a neckbrace to prevent further/any injuries with his neck. You will see the neckbrace appear in their Headbanger Music Video but I still would rather recommend that you check their live version from the same concert (Legend 97 which, by the way, is a concert celebrating Su's 16th Birthday and references the year of her birth 1997).
This is an homage and a tribute to that band who came before. BABYMETAL is well known for their easter eggs/tributes to great bands and legendary rock/metal bands that came before them.
In fact, you spotted the fact that the opening riff sounds exactly like Metallica's One. That's intended. It is indeed a tribute to Metallica who were amongst the first ones to show their support when BABYMETAL was still in it's early stages. They often (the girls) mention Metallica as their inspiration to get into metal music and to truly embrace the world of metal.
Another tribute to Metallica in this song is the statue of Virgin Mary (or Su) in the background which then breaks down at the end of BABYMETAL DEATH. It's a tribute to their ... And Justice For All album released in 1988 and their subsequent world tour which featured a giant statue of the Lady Justice breaking down.
I can only recommend going to see them live. Though nothing beats their big live shows in their own turf in Japan, their world tours are still a blast.

I hope BABYMETAL will be able to do a world tour soon. Their live show goes by so fast from the time it starts to the time it ends. Since they often perform in small halls overseas, they can't do large sets and staging, but that allows them to get up close and personal with the girls, which makes their Japanese fans envious.

Okay.. lots of backstory here. First off, Babymetal started out as an offshoot of a Jpop Idol group in Japan called Sakura Gakuin. They were the "metal club" there. But Babymetal got to be more popular than that, so they split off from that completely. In Japan, you have a limit on how long you can be in that idol group. Su-Metal hit that limit, so what she is doing is sacrificing her "pop idol" persona to be reborn as a metal queen.
Babymetal gets a lot of influences from other bands. The neck brace is a tribute to Yoshiki, the drummer from X-Japan. He would headbang so hard while playing drums that he all but broke his neck, and had to wear a neck brace ever since. This is tribute to that. Obviously, you got the Metallica influence. However, at the end, when the head of the statue falls, that is also a tribute to them. Metallica did this during the "...And Justice For All" tour in 1988/1989, when they had a statue of Lady Justice (they named her "Doris"). At the end of the show, the head of Doris fell off, so this is a nod to them.
Others have already mentioned that "Death" is a play on words. the Japanese language does not have the -th sound, but they have a similar word "desu", which the u is silent, so it is pronounced "des". They'd say that word, and hold their tongue between their teeth to get the -th sound. but "desu" means "to be" or "I am". So they are simply introducing themselves in the song. The lyrics are the name of the band spelled, and then each one saying who they are: Su-metal desu (I am Su-Metal), Yui-metal desu (I am Yui-Metal), Moa-metal desu (I am Moa-Metal), Babymetal desu (We are Babymetal). That's it.
And the funnier thing here is that this was the closing of this particular show. For their first tour, this was their show OPENER (obviously without the crucifixion). Welcome to The One, as this is a huge Fox hole you're about to go down!

    • @emilyporter1186
      @emilyporter1186 ปีที่แล้ว

One correction: desu doesn't really mean "to be" or "I am". It's a present tense sentence ending which doesnt really translate to English.

You got it right about Metallica - One tribute in the intro of the song, the statue image in the background is another homage to Metallica and the Lady Justice statue from "And Justice For All".
The neckbrace is a reference to another living legend like Yoshiki from X-Japan, a legendary Japanese metal visual key band, it's meant to represent the summon of the metal spirit.
I don't know what other songs you watched already but I highly recommend Headbanger!! from this same show.
Hope to see you next time with more BM songs and I leave a recommendation down below for you.
They're saying their names but with a play on words, "SuMetal desu" means "I'm SuMetal" or "This is SuMetal" but they're trying to say "SuMetal death", back then during early days they introduced themselves this way in everywhere they go.
I admit the crucifixion was shocking but they didn't want to disrespect to any religion, they're taking images and theme from Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series to represent this specific live performance as well as a bridge between fiction and reality, after this show the lead singer was devoted herself to this project and the group became independent from previous main group during this year.
You have more than 50 songs and still more to come. Amuse their label is very hard to deal so if you want to avoid copyright blocked you have *Babymetal Reactor Resource* channel you'll get full original clips of their best live performance with watermarked logo safe to react, look for "Future Plans" vid, follow instructions and you'll get all of them, upload the one with the logo for us and you can watch without it, don't worry for us we already saw all of them.

Hahaha Great reaction. There can't be many bands who would crucify their lead singer on stage to celebrate her 16th birthday (Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating her 16th birthday in December 2013).
This was 3 months before they released their first album .... and from just 18 months or so before where they played their first solo headline show in a venue with a capacity of 150 they were able to sell out this venue (Makuhari Messe) with about 9,000 fans.
I will try to explain what was actually happening.
There is an English translation of the intro video in the description which would have helped a bit (perhaps) with understanding what was happening:
    "Legend 1997.
It is told that receiving the legendary neck brace from the god of Metal,
she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess.
The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times
is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time.
    The apocalypse is prophesied
    DOOMSDAY comes
There remains ... little time ..."
Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.
'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:-
"B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death."
It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker the English word death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourself as "D Music Life desu" (We are D Music Life).
All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified.
There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum riff is (as you noticed straight away) an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he had to wear a neck brace a lot of the time, especially when performing.
On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - it was the finale here at Legend 1997, the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions. So far that has happened 5 times (plus a couple more in the shows at the Budokan they played early last year), the last before those was at Legend S, Baptism XX in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames.

she shall abandon her human life and be reborn as a goddess.
The bloodline which has been passed down from ancient times
is destined to be the guide, boarding the ark of time.
    The apocalypse is prophesied

You've really jumped right into the deep end with 'Rondo of Nightmare', followed by 'BABYMETAL Death'.
The song title, 'BABYMETAL Death', and the lyrics are a play on words in Japanese.
In this context, "desu" in Japanese can mean "I am" or "We are".
It's pronounced "des", which can sound like "death", especially if you stick your tongue out a bit when you say it. : )
So when they say "Su-metal Death!, Yuimetal Death!, Moametal Death!, BABYMETAL Death!", it also means "I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are BABYMETAL".
    The rest of the lyrics are just spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L", one letter at a time.
'Legend 1997' was named for Su-metal's birth year. She was born on December 20th, 1997.
This concert was held the day after her 16th birthday, on December 21st, 2013.
This song was used as an opening number for several years to get the crowd hyped up.
Usually without the crucifixion. : )
This performance was unusual since it was the closing number.
Here's a translation of the introduction:
"It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset (neckbrace) from the god of the Metal,
she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The gene which has been determined from ancient time
is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time.
    The apocalypse prophesied
    the DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    there remains…
    little time…
    (5) Are You (4) Ready to (3) (2) Mosh'sh (1) Mosh'sh (0) Mosh'sh".
Kami Band members for this concert were guitarists Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Leda Cygnus, BOH on bass, and Hideki Aoyama on drums.

I'm sure others can better explain this, but the title is actually a "cute" play on words. In Japan a typical greeting would be Babymetal desu (the u is silent) which would be like I am Babymetal. From what i read there is no "th" sound in the Japanese language so babymeta; desu becomes babymetal death. As previously noted it's basically Su's accention to "Metal Goddess" though in other events this was used at the beginning of the show. just a brief note on the show itself. the 1997 refers to Su's birth year, she just turned 16 the day before this show. Moa and Yui were 14. The band, the Kami band (Kami meaning god/spirit) were dressed according to their name.

BTY they put a neck brace on her neck. Yeah.
You should watch the song named headbanger by Babymetal.

  • @naycnay

This was their old opening song when all three of them were still there.
The lyrics are "Su-metal death. Yui-metal death. Moa-metal death. Babymetal death". They append -metal onto their names as their Babymetal characters. Death is a play on the Japanese word "desu" meaning "it is" or "to be", which is used to say something to the effect of "I'm Su-metal. I'm Yui-metal. I'm Moa-metal. We're Babymetal". The chanting of "death" is akin to saying "We are! We are!".
So when you watched Road to Resistance later and they did their show closer shouting in English "We are, we are, we are, Babymetal!". That is basically the lyrics of this song.

A someone pointed out to this video: child labour laws in Japan requiers neckbrace for crucifixions... the neckbrace is acctually an homage to the band X-japans drummer and you will see that often if you check out more bm. The intro is an omage to Metallica and Babymetal does alot of nods and homgaes to other bands in their music and performances.

Their expressions of just jaw dropping, to being scared, confused, loving the song, and just them being so confused without the context lol. Deffently one of the funniest Babymetal reactions I have seen, that shock lol. The song I am pretty sure is about Sumetal be reborn into a metal goddess. It was her 16 birthday show, I believe after her actual birthday, they love doing shows after their birthday and so much to see. I reccomend Babymetal Megitsune Live at any concert. It is huge fan. fav.. I found this band last summer and hope to see an actual love show when they get back on tour. Alot of people been discovering each month and belive they are tied with most reacted artists on all of TH-cam with BTS and Nightwish. I belive that Babymetal could become even bigger on TH-cam at this rate of growth since they only have 3 mil subs with 10 years of experience. This can be do to alot of factors like Kpop growing bigger, them making a new genre in metal, to prove to skeptical people, and maybe being hidden compared to other big artists. I can definitely see this band reach 100 mil subs easily within future if they keep growing in popularity and brake through hard billboard charts and maybe this new album will do it. People think it may be released on November. Hope you enjoyed my mini theories, bit I do believe this is universal artist band loved by many and breaking what metal is and other genres.

Forgot to add. Everytime they say Death they are actually saying a different word in Japanese that sounds like death to introduce each other. Then they spell out Babymetal and say we are Babymetal. They love making complicated lyrics from older Japanese language to newer Japanese language, to culture, and other references. These lyrics took communities and TH-camrs like Andrew Hartley who has study Shakespeare and has lived in Japan and gotten help from family members who speak more Japanese. They even thought the lyrics meanings for alot of songs were very complicated and could be vague to understand at times even from all this knowledge. There are many other stuff and things I find within months that is really a Fox Hole. Hope you enjoy and Kitsune Up!

Translation of the opening video segment is Chapter 19 (below) but it really needs to be viewed in the context of the entire concert, where basically each song has some type of opening video segment. The "time stamps" are from the DVD. Each "Chapter" represents a song. The "Legendary Coreset from "the god of metal" is a homage to X-Japan's drummer, Yoshiki, who wore a neck brace during performances as a result of neck issues. Here it represents the human Su dying in order to be reborn as a Metal Goddess, with the neck brace symbolizing the transfer of Metal from the past to the future. It was her 16th birthday celebration after all. Believe it or not, this was their very first large concert. Prior to this, they had spent a couple of years performing in front of 100 people, growing that to 1500 people, caught fire, and then BAM, they announced themselves here.
    Chapter 05 (0:18:20-0:19:16)
Second Impact, in the winter of 1997, it was the birth of the new warrior 'SU-METAL' who transcends the way of this world. She was charged with the mission of Metal Resistance and challenged to fight taking her own life on the legendary '15th Birthday Night.' In 2013, SU-METAL accomplished Metal Resistance and steadily made legends in many of the festivals. After that, she returned to the Holy Mother in preparation for the birth of the new goddess. The Holy Mother said "The souls repeat the cycle of birth and death. Return to me... retracing your memory..."(1)
    Chapter 08 (0:27:57-0:29:24)
The girls romped (did kin-kila-ring!!)(2) too much with 'Uki Uki Midnight' in the holy night, who were YUI-METAL, MOA-METAL ...and SU-METAL. But, take care not to romp too much. YUI-METAL and MOA-METAL ate 'Check-It-Out Chocolate' again, although Kitsune-sama had told them "Don't eat them, Dame, zettai!" SU-METAL supposed "It will do me no harm, if it's a tidbit?"(3) However, she formed her hand as Kitsune Sign and tried to restrain. "Would you like a tidbit?" the two girls were leading her into devilish temptation. At last SU-METAL couldn't take it anymore and stretched out for them, but the chocolates were going away from her, "Eh!? Wait, wait a mo!!" SU-METAL was going to ask Kitsune-sama "Gimme chocolate! Please!"(4)
    Chapter 13 (0:49:40-0:51:00)
The holy night, the wonderful night on which everyone's dream will come true. But Metal Resistance is still in progress even if it's in the holy night. Kitsune-sama, the god of Metal, in order to make the holy night be in the Metal mood, sent the gods of guitar, the god of bass and the god of drums, together with Black Santa Claus... Black Santa Claus will come to the houses of good boys and girls. "Give me! Give me!" Black Santa Claus will come to your house too, to ask you to give them a present. The largest 'Onedari Daisakusen' in the history of X'mas, that will begin now.
    Chapter 17 (1:06:33-1:07:32)
SU-METAL fought on taking her own life in order to protect Metal Spirit. Finally the soul of SU-METAL changed into a raging red flame and burned up the sky red. But, as natural as the light of the distant stars fade away gradually, all living things in this world are fated to die. And now, the red moon is burning out together with SU-METAL...
    Chapter 19 (1:11:36-1:12:50)
Legend 1997, it was the tale of the one that abandoned being a human and transmigrated into a god by being given the Legendary Corset from the god of Metal. It is fated that the gene ordained since ancient times is to be transmitted by the ark of time. Till the DOOMSDAY recorded in the Apocalypse, the remaining time is... very short...
    Chapter 21 (1:19:07-1:21:25)
The tale of Red Night- When the sky turns red and the pulse of life echoes, the door of the Apocalypse will open. The chosen metal warriors from all over the world will gather in Herusaremu the sacred place of Budo (martial arts) and aim to be the finalist. Only the officially-Metal-named people those who get Babymetal Apocalypse will be led into the specially sacred place (Mosh'sh Pit/arena). Legend 'Giant Corset Festival' -World's NO.1 Metal Budo Convention Final- on 1st March 2014, at Nihon Budokan.
The tale of Black Night- When Herusaremu the sacred place is covered up by the darkness of deep black. Kitsune-sama will make a huge magic circle become visible for the DOOMSDAY and recall Babymetal. The chosen people those who have Matal name will become eye-witnesses and the recalling ceremonie will be held there. Then, Babymetal will fall into eternal sleep for the next stage... Legend 'DOOMSDAY' -Recalling Ceremonie- on 2nd March 2014, at Nihon Budokan.

Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven (referring to the year of Su's birth)
It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of Metal,
she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The gene which has been determined from ancient time
is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time.
    The apocalypse prophesied
    The DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    There remains... little time.."
Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto the J-Pop Idol to be reborn as Su-metal the Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.
BABYMETAL dreamed of someday opening up for the legendary metal group Metallica that dream came true at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. As one might expect from the trio, they absolutely rocked the stage! Kicking off Metallica's Seoul show on January 11, 2017, BABYMETAL opened the night with an explosive 6-song set.

Wow. You guys certainly jumped into the deep end with your Babymetal experience - usually this performance is recommended for more advanced BM fans.
Others may already have chimed in, but here's what I know of this piece. It seems this is a statement of Sumetal's death and rebirth as a metal goddess amongst other things. Koba did as is his wont to co-opt non-Japanese cultural touchstones and weave them into his brilliantly mad concepts. In this case, of course, he's using Christian tropes, including the cross, the crucifixion and such. I get the feeling it's mostly based on Catholic imagery. This may be deliberately intended to be provocative, and I've seen one or two reactors being either slightly offended or at least a bit uncomfortable with it. But at the end of the day it's all just great musical theatre.
Just a note about the neck brace. That originates in the Headbanger! video which I hope you'll get to see very soon (but seen the live version they recommend for greatest impact). The idea is borrowed from the drummer of a famous Japanese metal band who hedoban'd his neck so badly that he need one thereafter. You'll see 🙂

I would say both of the songs you have heard are among the more "serious" ones, for lack of a better word. They lack a bit of the playfulness and cuteness seen in many of their songs (apart from the innate cuteness of the girls, of course). So I think you will be surprised what curveballs you are still going to get thrown at.
If you'd like to see something a little more playful, I'd recommend checking out "Headbanger" from the same show (called "Legend 1997"). Another one with amazing energy, but from a newer album would be "Pa Pa Ya".

Nice reaction. Just when you thought Babymetal just did fun Kawaii metal songs they just blow that notion up. I hope you get a chance to watch this whole concert. It was done as a rock opera style. From the first song to the last song the whole performance told a story. The story of how Babymetal went from idols to metal. Just in case there was any doubt left about what they are. The song musically starts with a tribute to Metallica. If you don't know that riff. Run don't walk and listen to Metallica's One. They also pay tribute to them with the statue in the back like Metallica did for their Justice for all tour. They also broke the statue at the end of the show. This statue is an image of Su's idol self. Which is why it was broken at the end. Her idol self is gone, and her metal self will rise. They did slip in some Kawaii if you watch Yui and Moa closely. When they put the neck brace on Su. Which is a tribute to the band X Japan whose drummer hurt his neck from headbanging so hard he had to wear a neck brace. True story. Yui and Moa actually giggle when they put it on her. And of course, Yui fixes Su's hair because you have to look good when we sacrifice you. Hilarious did Yui and Moa sell her out? They are known as Black Babymetal the mischievous side of Babymetal. Their song Sis Anger musically might be Babymetals heaviest song. That was until the 10 years of Babymetal at the budokan shows. Where they introduced a new version of Babymetal Death. The Shin Godzilla version. Over the top heavy. Best part is the song is just saying I am Su I am Yui I am Moa Babymetal. With those few lyrics Babymetal delivers one of the most amazing performances. And all for Su's 16th birthday. This was the road to Babymetal winning awards for their concerts. All this adds up to why nobody is ready for death especially not Babymetal Death. Babymetal everything you want in music and somethings you didn't know you needed.
