    Ben didn't care where he played. Big stadiums, small venues. As long as he was playing. He said he wanted to play until he couldn't play anymore and he did. RIP Benjamin. Thanks for the music.

      Yes, when Ben's doctor told him he had 3-4 months left, Ben said to his new band "I'll be out soon. Book as many gigs as you can". (Something to that effect). Our beloved Benjamin. How we miss you. 🎸🌹

      Ben was a nice talent and could transition to bass from guitar and had better range than Ric Ocasek. But Ric Ocasek wrote the songs (sometimes with Greg Hawkes). And Greg and Elliot and Dave contributed major portions to sound.

    I think Ben truly loved playing music for 10 or 10,000...but I think he really could have benefited from the expertise of good management-the Cars were a great band, but they themselves acknowledge their trajectory to super stardom wasn’t solely their talent. They had top notch management and music attorneys that handled their business and knew how to market them & put them in front of the right people.
    It was their management that flew Roy Thomas Baker, a prestigious and powerful producer who at the time managed the most famous bands in that era - foreigner, journey, Tom petty, to Boston-during a blizzard no less - to see them perform. Even though they already had a huge cult following in that area - die to the weather - they performed in front of around a dozen people. Seriously. He asked them to come to England to make a record -less than a month later they went & recorded that first pivotal and staggeringly huge eponymous album in 12 freaking days. Within 6 months they went from local club band to touring the world. He produced the first 4 records. Just those records alone probably made all the members extremely wealthy.
    If you watched the 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Awards-the year the band FINALLY got inducted, the remaining 4 members each gave very thoughtful acceptance speeches. And each one resoundingly thanked their management-by name and others that were so crucially instrumental in getting the band up & running.
    But who knows what Ben’s intentions were career wise after the band amicably went their separate ways. ( Ric is who sat down after some studio work announced he was done. This was around 1987-88. By than the band had enjoyed 12 years of worldwide fame, he and Ben had been together 10 yrs BEFORE the Cars hit it big.
    Its very possible Ben had gotten his fill of life as an in demand rock star. He’d performed in front of huge audiences -like the festivals where 250,000 people attended. He had already done a solo record that did relatively well. So it’s conceivable-he just wanted to chill out. He was financially set, and could do what he wanted. I suppose trying to accomplish as a solo artist anything close to what The Cars did wasn’t realistic. He’d essentially be starting over -and back on a grueling schedule to tour & promote his music -he’d have to -at around the age of 40>when cars broke up- also deal with a changing music scene that was detouring into the R &B /rap stuff - -a trajectory that lead us to where we are today, In 2020
    So maybe I’m projecting an opinion that looks at these sparsely attended performances, combined with the fact he never put out another record-as some kind of downward spiral. When in fact - he may have been precisely where he wanted to be. Able to kick back & enjoy his good fortune, ( and eventually a son) nurture friendships and perform whenever he felt like it. He always looks so happy & in the moment when he is in front of an audience.
    He was such a beautiful person, inside & out. He couple have had an ego like David Lee Roth ( horror) but every interview- he’s so humble and soft spoken...,and that smile.
    He & Ric’s spirits live on no matter what.
    Peace 🦋

      ms.lisa murphy I don’t think the breakup was that amicable.

    • @ms.lisamurphy269

      Ceepee true. I did read somewhere that on the end oh their last tour -Ben rode on his own bus.
      Be at one point was trying to convince Ric into looking at songs /lyrics he'd collaborated with a coat tail riding chick. Ric had written every song The Cars did- Each song started its embryonic state with Rics lyrics and snippets of melody -that was his part, than Elliot,David, Greg..,, and Ben embellished and properly composed and polished the Song until the end result. (I'm thinking Greg had much to do with making each track cohesive.
      So casually suggesting an addition to the flawlessly tried and true formula probably did Ben no favors I his judgement.
      (Another Cars obsessed fan gave me a link to the one record album this lady friend recorded (with Ben's backing financially I presume -is ....,,oh fucking awful is as nice a thing I can say. I think her name was Dianne Gray?? If you're into ear torture -go ahead
      You've been given fair warning my friend. Have a good weekend & stay safe'
      Peace 🦋

      @April-pw5ub 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ms.lisamurphy269 Yes I agree . It was his girlfriend at the time who co wrote his songs for “The Lace” . She was trying to further her own career and hoped that her and Ben would be a song writing duo. The Cars were breaking up and he was probably looking for a career outside of the group.Ric criticized her lyrics and would not include the songs in the future of the group. Ben knew Ric and how the group worked, I don’t believe it was all his idea .

      Ben could play multiple instruments and was actually formally trained as a drummer. He would switch instruments depending on what his band needed so he could keep playing. He never fell in love with the bass-he just played it because The Cars needed a bass player. He stated that his preference was actually rhythm guitar, so when he had a choice, he chose rhythm.

    Why isn't he playing the bass?

    • @GizziesGirl2
      @GizziesGirl2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He started out as a drummer, then became a rhythm and lead guitarist. He played bass in the Cars because Maxine Sartori(?), the DJ who essentially "broke" them in Boston, saw them live and said "Dude, you need to be doing something with your hands, you can't just be standing there with them stuck in your pockets", because for some reason, he wasn't playing an instrument at that point, only singing. Not really sure why he wasn't playing an instrument at that point, as he'd played guitar all through the previous incarnations of bands and duos he and Ric had gone through for the previous 8 years. Guess maybe they figured they didn't need 3 guitarists. But at that point he was a lead singer with no instrument, except maybe he'd occasionally shake a tambourine or something if the song had one, and they already had Elliot on Lead Guitar and Ric on Rhythm so Ben became the bassist. He did a pretty damn good job with it considering he only became the bassist so he'd have something to do with his hands.

      @tc1817 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GizziesGirl2 Okay..not FULL of shit, just mostly shit. He sang for a band before the cars formed.
      My question is simple. He always played bass with the cars. He is only doing cars songs with this band, why didn't he play the bass there?

    • @GizziesGirl2
      @GizziesGirl2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tc1817 If you'd seen all the videos for this show you'd know he did NOT only do Cars songs at this show, he did a number of his solo songs as well, both from The Lace and from the follow up album that was never released. (also it wasn't just "a band before the Cars", by the time the Cars had a hit he'd been playing in bands for 18 years and had been with Ric for almost 10 of them)
      So my point was, I would have thought would have been obvious, that Benjamin wasn't playing the bass because he didn't have to play the bass. For practical reasons I would suggest it's because it's actually quite a bit more difficult to play the bass and sing than it is to play the guitar and sing. Just because Paul McCartney and Sting make it look easy doesn't mean that isn't more work.
      Now that Benjamin had a choice in the matter, he chose to make it a little easier on himself. I'm not really sure why the fact that he played the bass on the songs in the Cars means he ought to play it when he's doing his own thing.
