- Benjamin Orr live at Southside Station in Boston on February 2, 1995, playing "Do You Know What It Feels Like". This may be my favorite song of his ever -- it's just amazingly beautiful. I have heard him refer to it as "dickwhiffle" before - a bit of Ben humor. He looks and sounds amazing at 47, don't you agree?

I really don't know how Benjamin got through this song. You can just feel the sadness. Miss you beautiful man.

thesongisover, you are so right!! Ben called me just before The Lace was shipped to all radio. I had reviewed an early copy of the album for Gavin and some of the other trades and had said nice things about it. Ben called just to say hi, thanks, and to talk about the area our radio station was in. He asked more about me then he talked about his record. The guy that every woman (and 40% of men) was in love with was a regular, shy guy that cared about being kind. Kind is cool )

The way he is described makes his passing all the sadder. Why do good ppl seem to go so young? George Michael is another one..a misunderstood yet gentle soul. I think these people are too good for this cruel world.

I'll never forget the day that Ben passed away. I had been listening to Skyline on my Elektra copy of The Lace...thinking about how much I liked Ben's singing. That night I did a search to find out what Ben was up to and of course it was all over the news. I still can't believe it. There are musicians, people who sing, people who write ect... But everytime I watch a Ben Orr video I see this guy that put his heart & soul into his music. He could've easily been a showman and probably more popular.

I feel the exact same way. I'm obsessed still 20 years later.
He looks like he knew all along, about life not always giving you what you need.. He has this sad yet knowing expression in a lot of his live performances (just look at some of the old concerts, when he sings Drive).
Really an interesting soul, and that's about the understatement of the century :-) Wish I'd been born ten years earlier, I'd have been drooling all over the place!!

This video is amazing. His talent has not been even close to being matched by any of these bands of today. He seems like such a beautiful man and very level headed. It's nice to see him playing a song that he and John Kalishes wrote together. I wished they could have carried on longer. Brilliant post salee320.

From what I have read his parents were private and religious people so there could be a connection here. Nevertheless, he was an awfully talented multiskilled muscian and a voice like his is made to be heard, appreciated and remembered by all who followed The Cars and new wave music. RIP Ben
You can see that at 3:17 and 5:00. You can almost feel what he was feeling. By the way, this song was over 5 minutes and before I saw how long it was I was thinking that it was too short. I'm with Eamon, this stuff should be released. RIP Ben You are greatly missed.

Ben Orr was a humble man who was so incredibly talented. What a voice, what a look and I am thankful that he was able to be such a part of my life growing up from Junior High School to adulthood and beyond. Thank you Ben for what you have given me and many thousands of others...
Ben's voice could melt a heart of stone. I never had the chance to see him in person, thanks you for much salee320 for sharing your experience with us. He was such an incredible man, the looks and voice of an angel, and yet I know he was a very kind and gentle soul. Forever missed, Ben.

Benjamin wasn't old here but he still looked great for the age he was I think he always looked younger than his age...up until that cruel illness took away his physical health. However even when he was in his final days his beautiful smile remained. RIP Benjamin you passed too early.
I listen to Benjamin Orr frequently. His voice really hits deep in my soul. Glad we have these videos.

A rocker with a golden voice, humble, kind, and generous. So much talent and yet this man is not in love with himself. Not here, not in interviews I've seen, not in testimonials by those who knew him.

Great footage...wish you could post the whole concert. I'm sure he played more then 4 or 5 songs...just wish I could have been there to hear it all. If I had known he would be playing live, back in Boston in 1995, I would have drove out there from Michigan. Really wished this song was released somewhere, also, to preserve and listen to over and over. Thank you for posting what you could...of a very special day.

Thanks for your comment Eamon: You know, I think Ben just was one to "live" life, and as he said in an interview "I'm just slow"...busy horsin around. And he wanted to compile a great album and was taking his time in doing so, and you know the rest; but surely his family and estate must recognize the greatness of this work and would want the world to hear it.

Spot on comment. I was always a little confused with MTV & other video shows (tho I had only broadcast tv) why they did not seem to focus on him too much. I always preferred his voice over RO's but you cannot deny Ric was a great writer. Ben had a very versatile voice... yrs of exp. Maybe just too modest to take the spotlight from his friend? You can see it the few interviews he did. After he went solo he did seem to loosen up a bit. At least we have many concert footage here .

Beautiful song, well done. Why was he not more famous? He liked working behind the scenes, producing other peoples' records. My theory: his physical beauty intimidated people and they treated him like a god, which made him feel lonely. Was he conflicted about being in the spotlight? After all, his talent needed to be expressed. Then there was his tragic death...
Nobody gets to have it all, but he was still very blessed. We were lucky to have him around for awihle.

But there are a number of obvious, apparent reasons "he was not more famous".
~ think about possible, plausible reasons why and put 2 and 2 together.

The Cars were very famous, and Benjamin was part of that. For that I'm glad.

This is such a beautiful song. Ben may have teased calling it dickwhiffle, a new word for me lol, but he grabs your heart and holds it tight with the raw emotion and vulnerability he expresses with his extraordinary voice, making every word so achingly gorgeous. Just like him.
@t1121cs One option would be to get in touch with someone related to Ben and pose as a businessman interested in releasing a new compilation or box set called "The Ben Orr Experience." I know that he has a son named Benjamin Orr. His son might know who inherited the unreleased master recordings, or at least be able to steer us in the right direction. You have to be confident and creative, otherwise nobody will take you seriously and nothing will be done to release this fantastic music.
I love Benny, but there are oh so many songs that are similar to this, sung by great singers/songwriters....From the 70's that bring me to tears......

Yes I ADORE Benny, always have,.....But do we always have to mention his good looks etc...?? THis is a beautiful song...and I am Dying to find out who actually wrote it......But there are also some groups back in the 70's that blow me away equally.....!!!!!

That's a VERY nice song. I think they are doing something interesting with a minor-ninth chord in there. One thing I don't understand ... The vocal melody comes across very clear, yet somehow I'm not catching many of the *lyrics* ... does that make sense?

Absolutely & Benjamin put a lot of depth and feeling into his vocals while Ric did not. Ric always sounded like he had a sinus cold, full of nose congestion. RIP Beautiful Benjamin ♥️❤️♥️🍾🍾🍾🍾🌹🌹🌹🌹♥️❤️♥️

He had an amazing voice, everyone here with ears knows that, and he was gorgeous, everyone with eyes knows that. you ever see the video where the cars introduce themselves? Ben himself says, greetings, i'm Benjamin Orr, i play bass and lead sing for the Cars, and this is my face. He knew he was gorgeous, he looked in the mirror everyday. he just wasn't an ego maniac! All us women are here for listening and looking pleasure. you want others, go elsewhere.

I'm enamoured with his looks because I am a huge fan of Rutger Hauer and Benjamin looks just like him yet Benjamin has the added bonus of having this stunning singing voice, and was so sweet too.
@@desertrose1226 I checked out Rutger Hauer, he exudes nothing compared to Benjamin Orr. Hauer plays in voilent movies. Benjamin is nothing like that. Benjamin is love. I do not have a tv, I don't watch movies, I don't like radio music. I'm actually a Christian and I study the Bible. Benjamin Orr exudes love and kindness + amazing voice and looks.
