Please note this video is primarily about getting these mics to work on Android phones, it is not meant to be a critical review of their audio quality (good or bad).
***Correction: I have been advised since making this video that these microphones do not use Bluetooth. So I apologise for such references that I make to the contrary. However, these are still wireless and just use a different type of radio technology, after all that is all Bluetooth really is anyway, right?****
I finally manage to get a Lavalier Wireless Microphone to work on my Android 11 Phone via the USB C port. Had to use the app Open Camera.
This will enable me to create better, more consistent audio on my Fixitfallows TH-cam videos.

Super thanks!!! Finally an explanation! I was thinking about it that my android phone is now allowing to record via external sound thru the usb plug since i also had similar problems recording internal sounds via screen recorders before. Now i can finally record videos without using a wired mic. Thanks again! Very helpful

Thank you, I definitely needed your help as I couldn't get it to work at first. I almost boxed it up for return as one mic wasn't working but thought I'd check both mics were charged properly. Also thought the receiver wasn't fitting properly with the thick case on my Samsung S21 Ultra but after removing the case I realised there was plenty of room. I'm really happy with the sound quality.

as the latest software update on my Android phone now allows me to use these Mics without the need to use the OpenCamera app. It might work for you to .

Hello Craig! Shel all the way from Singapore here. I bought that exact mic last year, thought was spoilt and bought a second one with the same problem.... static. Then thought it was my nokia not being compatible! Today I decided to go back to the problem, determined to find a solution online and found this video of yours. The Open Camera ap works greats!! The mike does work with the Galaxy S20/S20+, but it only works in Pro Video mode with the rear camera (go the the plus in your camera app and add pro video to your camera list). OTG mode has to be turned on, as well. It will not work with the selfie/front camera. I hope this helps!

WINNING - making things better - Love the tape tip. I bought this set for Android and iPhone before seeing any reviews. Shocking how decent it sounds from so far away for less than $30 USD.
Just arrived... but 60 feet is a LIE - I walked 120 feet from the camera with no problem. No hiss, No dropouts. I reviewed the sound later and wish I had gone further. Also, nobody mentions the reverb mode. TAP/click the Power button 3 times and the green light blinks, then solid. Now it's in reverb mode. Sing a little something and press 3 times again to exit reverb mode. The light will blink red for a moment, then sold green. Now it's back to normal recording.

Thanks. This really helped. I bought a dual mic about two weeks ago and it turns out that my phone did not support an external mic. I tried different brands and was fed up not until I come across this video. I will go keep the mic up again ( I returned it to the vendor already) I will update you once am back and test the mic. xoxo from Nigeria.

Which settings did you change in the opencamera app
@@aeropeoplellc8160 didn't change any settings. When you hook up the thing that goes in the phone, it just knows to use that source.

Thank you so, so much. I spent the afternoon cursing and weeping over this thing. Why is it advertised for Samsung s20 if the camera forbids it??? But I used your workaround with Open Camera and hey, presto, I am up and running. Thanks again.
The mike does work with the S20, but it only works in Pro Video mode (go the the plus in your camera app and add pro video to your camera list) with the rear camera. It will not work with the selfie/front camera.

This is very educational thank you. However what do you suggest I do with regards to mine being type C but my Android phone isn't type C?

This one is for usb-c to usb- micro..... Other combinations are available, just have a search for what you need.
mine sounds terrible. i got for walking vlogs around NYC and while the noise reduction works, it picks up weak a little and my voice gets clear and muffled at the same time

I've just tried to connect to my GoPro Hero 4 Silver (yeah I know, a bit yesteryear).
It wouldn't connect. On the GoPro you connect Bluetooth devices via the phone based App. The mic shows up in the app, which subsequently tells the camera to begin connecting..... however it seems the mic must utilise the USB plug-in section which comes with it. This won't attach to my camera as my Hero 4 has USB Mini B connection...... it might work with an adaptor..... perhaps 🤷🏼♂️
So if your camera has USB C you may be ok.
The open camera app does not work. So what do I do?
I bought this one on ebay but I think they upgraded the on button since . No rattle . It cost me $20 AUS delivered . Works awesome with that camera app you downloaded . Another setting under " Camera preview " Is " Show sound meter " . That way you can see if its picking up the mic .
I'm in Melbourne and it's not working for me. I it stays red n green keep blinking...? Any ideas..?
Both the transmitter and receiver have reset keys (according to the manual) they appear to be small pin holes at the end of each respective unit. That's got to be worth a go.

Did you have any problems with the audio and video not syncing when using the microphone with Open Camera?
Not that I've noticed yet, but then pretty much I haven't used it for "to the camera" stuff so far. I would say that I've lost some of the native lens selection whilst using Open Camera along with the brightness/contrast being a bit scetchy too. This is leading me to favour the stock camera on my OnePlus Nord, which doesn't support the BT mic 😕

The open camera app is very limited, can't see the video in Gallery and thus can't copy and paste it to my PC to edit before uploading to youtube .... did you manage to find any better software?
That has not been my experience of it. My OnePlus phone displays video in my stock "All" gallery album, "Video" album and in a standalone "Open Camera" album. With the myriad of settings within Open Camera you can choose the prefix for file names too.
As a consequence I've not felt the need to seek out an alternative package.
@@fixitfallows OK sorted that ... but it just won't let me move the video to my PC for editing ... doesn't seem to matter what I try.
@@darrendean21 so, I just tried with a new open camera video file..... I was able to both "copy & paste" as well as "cut:& paste" the file from my phone to my PC.
I don't know what to say..... do you have any security or permissions activated on your phone or PC which might be hindering this?
Bro, do you know Why it starts making a chiiiiiii sound when recording?
I bought a slightly different model, and it also sounds muffled like it's under a cushion. I don't know how companies manage to make bad audio in an actual audio product. So I stripped it down and swapped the electret capsule for some other capsuels and it buzzes too much, so i put the muffled capsule back on, Why do some capsules buzz and others dont? Surely there is something between this and the 100-200 quid wireless phone mikes which sounds ok?
Hello, sorry I've no experience with other mics. Audio recording and quality is not my area of expertise.. This video simply illustrates how to overcome the problem people have connecting external mics to Android devices and basic overview of this particular mics operation.
Hopefully someone out there can enlighten us both in respect of mics with a good price/quality ratio.

Hi, I just bought the exact same lavalier mic. It works when recording but does not work during messenger or teams call. Were you able to test it out during calls? I'm using it on my Samsung Galaxy tab.
No, only ever been able to use it on Open Camera. Somehow Open Camera overrides the Android restriction on allowing external mics..... but only whilst using Open Camera.
@@fixitfallows Thanks for your quick response. I've been trying to make it work for calls but even for my android phone it won't let me use the mic. But it does work for video and voice recording straight out of the box.

Its using Line-Of-sight system.
You don't need an app to get this to work. The Android I have has a recorder as an app. Go to settings on the recorder app already in the phone and be sure everything is set to "on" and then it works. I didn't need to download an app. Setup took less than a minute.
Thanks for sharing another option that might work some people depending on their device. Sadly on my device, a OnePlus Nord, the Recorder app doesn't offer me this solution.
I have oppo Reno z i did OTG on. Open camera external mic,. But still not recording audio when I am making video
1) Have you definitely selected the External Mic option within the settings of the Open Camera app ?
2) is the Mic/Transmitter unit definitely pairing with the Receiver unit ? On mine the light on the Transmitter turns green.
3) The Receiver unit has a small red light to show it is being powered by the USB port. If you have no red light, try plugging a USB C power lead into the side of the Receiver unit.
Failing that, there are small reset pin holes in each of the units.

I have tried everything including changing the devoper settings that I found you mentioned in comments. It reconisers that I'm using an external mic but I cannot get any sound in a video. 3 hours of my life I'm not getting back 😢😢
I'm just about to put a new video out as I have been made aware of another possibility. It works on my OnePlus phone even on the stock camera, Open Camera not required. Under "Sound & Vibration", "Advanced Settings", change "Default recorder " to "Add ons". It seems the default setting of Auto only ever selects the inbuilt mic. It works for me.

@fixitfallows yes it is. All very strange. I have the z flip 3 Samsung if that helps was going to send it back but if u can help in anyway would be great. It even came up with a msg once I'd debugged usb saying was recording via USB mic or something similar

Maybe you've got to activate your USB port so that it accepts the device. See the following article:

30 seconds in i wish you used a wireless mic. the mic/ audio is so far away! i hope by the end of the video the audio quality is better!
That is the very point of the video 🤣.
I acknowledge my poor audio, I buy a cheap mic, I show how to overcome the inherent Android external mic connection issue and show what level of audio range and quality you can expect from such units. All caveated by the clearly expressed fact that it is cheap (in audio equipment )

The only 100% way is to buy it and try it. You just need to be sure of the returns policy of whom ever you buy it from .

We have all found that you need to use Open Camera and ensure that OTG is active on your device.
The stock android camera software will not recognise external mics.
It didn't wirk on my Samsung phone😭. Samsung stopped blue tooth mics from connecting

You had to buy the other version for your phones charging port . I think a adaptor from USB C to the old style might work though .

@@creativeminds5773 try resetting the transmitter and receiver, the manual says there are small resets holes on the end of each.
The manual also states that on Oppo, along with some other brands, you have to ensure that OTG is activated. You'll find details easily enough about this on Google.

How about for iPhones?
This unit is for Android phones that utilise a USB C connection for their charging/peripheral ports.
Similar units are available specifically for iPhones which currently use the proprietary Apple type connection port.
i simply cant make it work in my both phones....

Does your phone allow OTG via / over USB? This needs to be active for the USB plug in mic receiver to be recognised by your phone perhaps Google this for your specific phone Good luck.
How to set noice cancelation?
The sound quality from these mics is barely acceptable. It is like low bit phone quality, with an annoying noise gate. The sound from built-in android mics is more faithful. I got mine for £7 on ebay. Glad I did not pay more.
My light stays steady blue not green
Mine on the mic stays green but on the receiver it stays red! Very confusing. But, with the help of this video, I finally got the mic to work!
