Getting to know the Honda NX500 with some fun in the mud

- Well, Easter weekend is upon us but the weather has not been great recently. Still I need to try out my camping equipment so decided to go for a 2 day ride with my Honda NX500. So I took it out for a ride along the Trans European Trail in Kent and Sussex and ended up wrestling in the mud and dropping it a few times.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I am deciding between a NX500, or a NC750 and I do like how the NX500 seems to be a good handling bike for those B and C roads you were travelling on. I think you'll have many happy experiences in the very near future on the NX500.👍👍
No problem, thanks for watching, I appreciate it. One thing I liked is that for these roads 3rd gear is perfect. You can pretty much leave it there and occasionally down to 2nd for the very tight corners. I haven't tried the NC750, but I did try the Transalp. The 750cc is definitely up on power, but I don't miss it on these small roads.
That was a great video! Getting my white NX delivered this weekend and can't wait to try it out. Unfortunately, I could not test-drive it because they can't re-stock fast enough. This machine sells like hotcakes over here 😅 A bit of a gamble, but everyone seems to enjoy riding it. It's the heaviest bike I drove so I will most likely have to get used to handling the weight. Good thing I got the fully kitted one haha. They sell a borderland edition over here with full crash bars, skid plate, and radiator + front lights protection (will definitely need those!) Not sure I'll be brave enough to go in the mud that early though 😂
Thanks. Yeah, I think you will love it. It's so easy to ride. I could have got the adventure pack but I felt that I wanted to customise in my own way.
Nothing that a good pair of more-off-road oriented tires could solve....

When it comes to the NX 500. I haven't made mine dirty yet. 😅
Only pavement and some light gravel roads...but the way it handles on corners is insane. I had a Trident 660 which was very nimble but this thing is insane on corners! I don't know if it's the narrow tyres or the trail angle...
So far I love it! The only small downside is the vibration above 6k revs, especially when deaccelerating. Otherwise great bike and I seriously doubt I will ever go back to naked bikes. If I can afford a second bike, this would be a super sport for track days. For commuting and everyday riding the ADV is a bull's eye!
Thank you! Yeah, it's certainly nimble. I feel so confident with this bike! It almost invites you to lean it as much as possible. I agree, the vibes above 6k are a bit annoying but it doesn't bother me yet.
Im off to test ride the NX500 this weekend--i plan on switching the tires out asap but to a sticky premium Michelin Road 6 but you have heaps of muddy 50/50 options out there to chose from especially if you run a 150 rear--i did 40k km on those Rhinowalk bags they were great no issues and with packing cubes or silocone cry bags to pack into then insert into the legs it makes easy work of organizing your gear.Waterproof duffle on the back and Bobs your uncle.
It's like you read my mind. I've got a 25l swmotech duffel bag. I'm very close to the first service and I'll do a video after that with all my mods and luggage.
How do you see with all the stuff in your line of sight?
The camera position is mounted on my chin bar. My line of sight is actually way over the screen, so none of this get in my way. It's difficult to show this as the chin is really the only mounting point. Just as a reference, I can see over the tops of cars when I'm on the bike. If you have a look at Honda's promotional images you can see where the rider's head is compared with the screen, the top of the screen is probably level with the the rider's shoulders perhaps even lower which probably matches my position. www.honda.co.uk/motorcycles/range/adventure/nx500/overview.html
Test rode on NX500 and a Hornet 500 on Saturday. Really expected to come away with an NX but ended up preferring the Hornet. I'll use it as a commuter mainly once I sell my 650 VStrom, and use my XSR900 for playing out on.
I never expected to buy an NX500, it's funny how that happens! :)

After years of MTB and greenlaning in West Sussex (when you used to have trails here) I know wet slimey chalk can be a nightmare with knobblies on, let alone the road tyres on the NX500.
I've done about 200 miles on mine after picking it up on Saturday. Backside suffered a bit. Putting some Barkbusters on mine. Do you have any mods planned?
Good to know. Yeah I can definitely see the backside hurting after a long day. Might need to consider some kind of seat cushion. I've got a few mods planned. Bark busters, engine guard, bar risers and other things. I've already fitted some of these things, straight after that trip and I'll probably do a video once everything is on.

You probably noticed it but you really grabbed that front brake on the 1st fall instead of going for the rear one. That probably didn't help. And yeah the stock tires are 80/20 or 90/10 tires.
I've got the same bike in white btw with stock tires and would definitely not go in the mud with that setup even with crash bars and engine guard installed.
Nice call on the Samsung tablet I was thinking of buying the same active 2 tablet.

Yeah, it's a bad habit that I really need to get out of. Strange thing is I'm actually pretty good at using my back brake, it's just that instinctive reaction on the front. One bit of advice I've seen for off road is to have 2 fingers over the brake all the time so that natural instinct to grab it is reduced. Tbh it was kind of an accident ending up there. I thought I'd taken all off road out of my route. By the time I'd realised how bad it was getting I was in the thick of it.
I'm going to do a video of all my equipment once I get it through its first service and have some new tyres, but for now, the tablet holder is from Ram Mount. It's the generic 8" tablet holder, tab-tite, I think and then I've fixed it to the bike with SW Motech universal GPS mount which allows for a few different mounting solutions including ram mount, works very well, and it's solid. I have an elastic band holding it together but in reality I probably don't need it.

I was thinking about buying those rhinobags for my NX500, they come in 3 different sizes and was afraid they'd droop a bit. What size are yours?
Mine are 14L each side. So 28L in total. They do droop a little but as I showed with some bungees you can sort that out. I'm actually so far quite impressed with them. For the money I have no complaints.
Tell me, what is that satnav you have mounted above the dials, it's enormous....?
Ha ha, it is. It's actually a Samsung 8" tablet. Active 2, about £40 second hand. It's running an app called DMD2. Check it out. Even paying for the maps it's still a lot cheaper than most GPS hardware and just as good, if not better.
Don't worry about the weight of the bike, you will get used to it, I have a PCX125 for everyday which is exceptionally light but I have a CB650R which is like 20KGs heavier than yours, moving it was a pain but now I got used to it. Anyway, I'm thinking of buying an NX500 as a second bike, if I may ask, have you ever ridden 2 up? And if yes, how does it perform?
Yeah, I guess it's something I have to get used to! I think a lot of people don't realise how heavy they are. If I met someone who said they deadlift 200Kgs at the gym I would be impressed, and yet us bikers have to lug that kind of weight around all the time! :)
As for 2 up, I haven't tried it. I think most people say it will do it, but you probably wouldn't want to do a month long tour like that, however sometimes a challenge is half the point of it!

I haven't ridden a CB650R, but I have owned a Trident 660, which is a close competitor to the CB. I would choose NX 500 over any naked without hesitation.
Ugh... chalky mud is ice-lethal. Grew up in Hampshire/ Wiltshire and had to deal with chalk on green lanes and around farm entrances.
Regarding back pain... unless its less than 10 miles, dump the back pack and let the bike carry the load, you'll be surprised how much better you feel at the end of the day.
That few kg added to wind pressure builds up even at A road speeds.
Yeah that's good advice, my problem is where to put water. I have a bladder inside my backpack, I'm going to have to figure out a different solution, because you're right I definitely can't have that on my back for anything more than a trip to the shops.
@@get_to_the_lunchbox Try a small tank bag with shoulder straps so you can wear it like a backpack when you leave the bike..... might work for you.

does your bags get burn marks from the exhaust heat?
No burning at all. I would say I did a day and a half of riding. About 130 miles. The bag doesn't quite touch the exhaust, I would also say that I find this exhaust doesn't get particularly hot.

Ending up on the off-road sections was actually a bit of a surprise to me. I thought I'd taken then out of my route planning. I've ordered some more off-road orientated parts now.
I think OEM tires will be the first to go.

The camping biker, TH-cam channel. Tyres Mita E07 + enduro trail. Mine are being fitted next week.
Yeah that's what I have in mind. I have to say though the stock tyre is excellent on the road and I'd be concerned about losing that. Added to that I've seen youtubers like Dork in the Road and Big Rock Moto successfully using the stock tyre on gravel and light off road. But then they both have a lot more skill and experience than I have in those situations.
Why do you keep using the front brake on mud? Of course it will slide out. Use the rear brake.
Nope, you need use front brake and it won't slide thanks to ABS. What happened was not because of the braking but because of the lateral slide. Note that when you slow down you reduce the centrifugal force which will make you slide laterally more whatever brake you use to do it. The general idea with brakes is the front will brake and the back will balance.

Yeah, the mitas is probably what I'll go for. Have you had experience of the Michelin Anakee Wild. They seem to have good reviews too for on and off road.
@@get_to_the_lunchbox I had some Anakee about 15 years ago and they were good tyres but never had them off road so can’t say more really
God, those license plates that you British have to put on your motorcycle, Can’t you just get the police to wear glasses? that road looks slicker than snot. I would wait until things dry up. I guess that’s not much of an option either.
😂 In the UK if you wait for the weather to dry up, you'll get about 1 month of riding time per year! 😂
It's 9x7 inches the standard plate I've got a 6.5x6.5 inch as the numbers and letters still fit on with the legal spacing.
It's a road bike. NOT an off road bike .

Wrong, I had one off road all weekend. Didn’t bottom out once on floor or suspension. You have no experience at all…… clearly

It's a crossover, definitely still meant for better off-road confidence and use but not purpose built.
