I found a book in my grandfather's collection, "Nicholas and Alexandra" by Robert Massey. Little did I know that it provided one of the first references about the family's life. They lived such an extreme life.
The reason why sometimes the character design look weird or awkward it’s because they’re animating in ‘rotoscope’ technique. They recorded real life actors performing the scenes and then they drew/traced the actors movements, which is why the mevements look real, more humane, more like a theatre performance rather than more animation like.

I love this movie because it depicted so many details around the Romanove and the cult around Anastasia. But it really traumatized me as a child to find out that she actually never got her happy ending.
Actually, there are some inconsistencies to the story. It is also said that the body that was missing along with Alexei's was her sister's, Maria, known as the most beautiful of them.

I loved this movie growing up. I loved the song "Once Upon a December" so much that I sung that song to my daughter when she was a newborn/infant to soothe her. She's 12 now and watches this movie all the time.
I loved this movie as a kid, however the Broadway version of Anastasia is incredible. Much more realistic, emotional and heartbreaking. Plus the Broadway music is brilliant
@@beverleyeliane I know! Lol but the Broadway version is amazing. The antagonist is the son of one of the soldiers who murdered the royal family. So it is an interesting look at his character dealing with his duty like his father. Tiny spoilers but the climax gives me chills every time where he and Anastasia have a stand off: “Still/The Neva Flows (Reprise)” I looked it up and this character/plot was actually originally supposed to be in the animated movie but producers wanted a comedic relief since the film was aimed towards a younger audience.
Not to mention how hard it is to recall something so long ago as an adult when the details are fuzzy. I literally barely remember anything from before I was 12 and I never really had too much trauma.

Fun fact Rasputin actually look like that and this is one of my favorite non-disney Disney feeling movies and there is also a Broadway musical that's based on this version of Anastasia in the 1950s version of Anastasia and it incorporates a lot of historical aspects like the fact that when they were executed by the Bolsheviks the women were wearing diamonds zoning to the bodices of their dresses and it acted like a bulletproof vest they also changed how Anastasia calls her grandmama because apparently in real life she called her Na na (Nawnaw)
My favourite part of this movie are the voices behind the characters. Meg Ryan brings so much charisma and character to Anastasia, I want her to voice more animations.
The voice of Bartok is Hank Azaria. If you've ever seen Friends, you will recognize him as David the scientist who goes to Minsk. Hank Azaria is also the voice actor for a lot of the characters in the Simpsons.

When you guys randomly started singing Owl City, I died for a second! 😂💀 Loved how you were basically just loving on Pooka ad Bartok the whole time. Bartok is one of my favorite impressions to do. He's just so adorable. He reminds me of Kronk from Emperor's New Groove in that he works with the villain, but isn't a villain and is mostly there for comedic relief.
The real life event and mysteries that surrounded Rasputin was more interesting than the fiction but yeah it's a wholesome take to a very tragic historical event in history. Since you're watching anime as well historical / period anime that deal with conflicts abroad during this time, if we're going to trace history, anastasia's father tsar nicholas was somehow involved in it.

Like, this is arguably the least dark of his movies. The Secret of Nimh, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Titan A.E... All of those were way darker than this one!
This is one of my all time favorite childhood movies. I saw this 5 times in the theaters. I still watch this movie to this day. Plus the real history is so sad and I became obsessed with learning about this family
To be honest, Anastasia is arguably the best 2D animation movie up to present day (as of year 2023) and still counting.. it beats all Disney’s 2D animation films so far. By the way, Anastasia is not under Disney, it’s under 20th Century Fox studio. Great 👍 🎉 This film has become an icon of an era. It’s broadway 🎭 musical performance are even better than the animation. People love Pooka and Bartok so much. All the songs in the film 🎞️ were entertaining and filled with feelings and emotions as well. Definitely not just another princess movie, like Disney’s 😊
I love this movie. Random fact that picture that Anastasia gave her grandmother in the beginning of the film is actually an actual drawing she drew for her grandmother in real life. And the people that were in that dream scene I’m pretty sure that was her little brother & sisters & dad. But when I found out that it’s based off the real story I was like “that’s so sad but the movie is really really good. Just wish that the real life story didn’t have a sad ending but wish it ended with a happy one.” Also I’m pretty sure the dog represents or symbolizes (or whatever the word I’m looking for is) is the dog that used to be her sister Maria’s dog but during their quarantine/lockdown the pup became more of Anastasia pup. If I remember correctly I read that in one of the books about their family and what actually happened. Also the live action is also really really good. Definitely recommend the live action Anastasia:once upon time. (It’s not a musical but it has music in it.)
living in Orlando. This reminds me of when hundreds and hundreds of hand drawn artists were “let go“ from their jobs, because toy story had just come out and throughout the city streets of Orlando, there were people protesting. Toy story was the first movie I remember being in that Pixar style, and then the movie cars. After that there were no more animated artist from the era of sword in the stone, Robin Hood, Alice in wonderland, the rescuers, snow, white, Cinderella beauty and the beast, Aladdin, all of those artists were put on indefinite furlough. I've lost track of how many times I've watched this movie. It was made into a Broadway musical, and I thought I would never see it, but it was showing in a city 2 hours away, so my hubby took me this past May. It was such a great experience. They changed several things from the movie, but it was very well done.

Funny enough this was not considered a Disney movie because it is own by 20th century fox. Now that Disney bought out 20th century fox, it now officially a Disney movie.
While I understand why this is the most well known Don Bluth film, The Secret of Nimh will always be my favorite. Beautiful animation, unusual but excellent protagonist, and a nuanced but simple story.

Bartok the Magnificent! Yeah, I haven't seen that movie in ages but I've found myself thinking about it lately. 🎵My underwear got frozen standing here all week🎵😂 And RIP to Angela Lansbury, who voiced the grandmother; she was such a huge part of the childhoods of so many of us. They're in Purgatory/Limbo, so I guess you were close. Dimitri & Anastasia didn't grow up together; she was royalty & he worked in the palace kitchen, so they would've spent absolutely no time together as kids. Have you guys never actually been in love before? His head was in those proverbial clouds & he pretty much couldn't focus on anything but her face, so of course he "forgot" she was wearing the dress & didn't notice they'd stopped dancing. The male head of the Russian royal family wasn't called a king; he was a tsar/czar & his wife was the tsarina/czarina. Something I didn't learn until years after seeing this movie is this was based on the woman who claimed she was Anastasia but was actually a mentally disturbed woman who jumped off a bridge in Berlin, survived, & developed amnesia; she kept claiming in the hospital she was taken to that she was a Romanov but when her fingerprints were taken as part of the investigation into her identity, it was discovered that she was Franziska Schanzkowska (aka Anna Anderson), a Polish factory worker with a history of mental illness. It suddenly hit me, what that bearded guy in Titanic was talking about (that Russian babe, Anesthesia 😂) & I learned the basics of the case from an episode of Unsolved Mysteries.
This is such a nice way of looking at the Romanov Royal Family in a pink glass but I still could not shake the fact that they are all murdered. Still, Anastasia is still my favorite princess. Even though Disney bought Fox a long time ago, Anastasia is still a Fox princess for me.

Rasputin sells his soul, murders her entire family, and then sends evil spirits to literally kill her. Plus her whole story from the amnesia to a tragic childhood as an orphan to being literally homeless. The whole movie has this wistful, melancholy tone to it from the visuals to the musical elements. That's so unique for an animated children's movie- it's a fairly serious movie and the few jokes are toned down or even scary (the gags with Rasputin decomposing). Plus, the animation style is like no movie I've seen before. It uses so much texture for 2D animation and adds those dynamic sparkles to really give certain places and things a sense of grandeur. The color grading isn't very bright or saturated like you'd expect in a children's movie. I think the songs, while maybe not as fun and dance-y, are some of the most beautiful to come from an animated movie. They are quite orchestral, have choruses, and have a sadness to them that touches some blue part of my soul. Even the fun ones and the whole score. They also have a minor (as in chords) feel which is such a vibe. Once Upon a December is a song that lives in a melancholy part of my heart, though there aren't many animated movie songs vying for the spot. In the Dark of the Night is also a favorite childhood song. Overall, I'm glad this movie is getting more attention nowadays. I think it's one of the most visually stunning animated children's movies with a haunting theme and score that really sticks with you. It's so wonderful when movies trust children with dark and/or sad movies. Young kids don't only like happy, light-hearted, even optimistic movies. Their feelings are deeper and more complicated than you'd think and they deserve a range of movies that reflect that.
It seems like you sometimes stop yourselves from laughing and like you maybe edit out when you're giggling at each other. Leave it in! It's charming! Yall are hilarious and I can't imagine you're not laughing at each other behind the scenes.
So as we know these are all historical figures except for like Dimitri, but Rasputin’s experiences really led u to kinda believe he really was involved with dark magic. Dude was killed several times and never stayed dead. They even tried drowning him with rocks attached to him and still he survived😭

The real story of Anastasia is honestly so sad, but I absolutely adore this movie, i think it’s so underrated and honestly so well made for a non Disney movie of that time The entire story surrounding Anastasia but also Rasputin is so interesting, i remember taking about all those thing in history class in Germany, and let’s just say in real life their story are the furthest away from anything in this movie….well maybe Rasputin is quite similar 👀
A fast food restaurant or something had stuffed animals for this back in the day. I have no idea if my sister still has her Pooka, but I do have my Bartok. He's perched on a suction cup so you can hang him up and he says "I'd give her a ha, and a hiya... and then I'd kick 'er." Your issues with Dimitri's art is just Don Bluth films inconsistencies. All of their animated movies in the era were like that and had some really off cels.
This movie is historical fiction. The intro scene is relatively true. There really was a religious figure who swore revenge on the monarchy, who took several attempts to kill. The intro scene, where the grandmother says she never saw Anastasia again, was a quote from Anastasia's true grandmother. You can watch the interview in the DVD extras.

Yup. The Soviet Union(the winners of the Russian Revolution) kept where of their remains were buried until they fell in 1988.

Fun fact Rasputin actually look like that and this is one of my favorite non-disney Disney feeling movies and there is also a Broadway musical that's based on this version of Anastasia in the 1950s version of Anastasia and it incorporates a lot of historical aspects like the fact that when they were executed by the Bolsheviks the women were wearing diamonds zoning to the bodices of their dresses and it acted like a bulletproof vest they also changed how Anastasia calls her grandmama because apparently in real life she called her Na na (Nawnaw)

The voice of Bartok is Hank Azaria. If you've ever seen Friends, you will recognize him as David the scientist who goes to Minsk. Hank Azaria is also the voice actor for a lot of the characters in the Simpsons.

When you guys randomly started singing Owl City, I died for a second! 😂💀 Loved how you were basically just loving on Pooka ad Bartok the whole time. Bartok is one of my favorite impressions to do. He's just so adorable. He reminds me of Kronk from Emperor's New Groove in that he works with the villain, but isn't a villain and is mostly there for comedic relief.

The real life event and mysteries that surrounded Rasputin was more interesting than the fiction but yeah it's a wholesome take to a very tragic historical event in history. Since you're watching anime as well historical / period anime that deal with conflicts abroad during this time, if we're going to trace history, anastasia's father tsar nicholas was somehow involved in it.
Ah, this is a blast from the past. I loved this when I was kid and wore out the VHS rewinding my favourite songs again and again.

Welcome to Don Bluth lol. He did NOT coddle children. His animated movies got DARK! Like, this is arguably the least dark of his movies. The Secret of Nimh, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Titan A.E... All of those were way darker than this one!

To be honest, Anastasia is arguably the best 2D animation movie up to present day (as of year 2023) and still counting.. it beats all Disney’s 2D animation films so far. By the way, Anastasia is not under Disney, it’s under 20th Century Fox studio. Great 👍 🎉
This film has become an icon of an era. It’s broadway 🎭 musical performance are even better than the animation. People love Pooka and Bartok so much. All the songs in the film 🎞️ were entertaining and filled with feelings and emotions as well. Definitely not just another princess movie, like Disney’s 😊

I love this movie. Random fact that picture that Anastasia gave her grandmother in the beginning of the film is actually an actual drawing she drew for her grandmother in real life. And the people that were in that dream scene I’m pretty sure that was her little brother & sisters & dad. But when I found out that it’s based off the real story I was like “that’s so sad but the movie is really really good. Just wish that the real life story didn’t have a sad ending but wish it ended with a happy one.” Also I’m pretty sure the dog represents or symbolizes (or whatever the word I’m looking for is) is the dog that used to be her sister Maria’s dog but during their quarantine/lockdown the pup became more of Anastasia pup. If I remember correctly I read that in one of the books about their family and what actually happened. Also the live action is also really really good. Definitely recommend the live action Anastasia:once upon time. (It’s not a musical but it has music in it.)

living in Orlando. This reminds me of when hundreds and hundreds of hand drawn artists were “let go“ from their jobs, because toy story had just come out and throughout the city streets of Orlando, there were people protesting. Toy story was the first movie I remember being in that Pixar style, and then the movie cars. After that there were no more animated artist from the era of sword in the stone, Robin Hood, Alice in wonderland, the rescuers, snow, white, Cinderella beauty and the beast, Aladdin, all of those artists were put on indefinite furlough. It was crazy times here in Orlando.

I've lost track of how many times I've watched this movie. It was made into a Broadway musical, and I thought I would never see it, but it was showing in a city 2 hours away, so my hubby took me this past May. It was such a great experience. They changed several things from the movie, but it was very well done.

It’s one of my most favorite animated movies, the acting of the actors are the dominant push, the visuals are crazy for 1997 animated movie. The music is beautiful too. Although the real story is depressing, the movie is a great comfort for dreamers

Funny enough this was not considered a Disney movie because it is own by 20th century fox. Now that Disney bought out 20th century fox, it now officially a Disney movie.
While I understand why this is the most well known Don Bluth film, The Secret of Nimh will always be my favorite. Beautiful animation, unusual but excellent protagonist, and a nuanced but simple story.

I'm gonna argue that Land Before Time and/or An American Tail are the most well-known Bluth films. Maybe All Dogs Go To Heaven.

Dimitri & Anastasia didn't grow up together; she was royalty & he worked in the palace kitchen, so they would've spent absolutely no time together as kids.
Have you guys never actually been in love before? His head was in those proverbial clouds & he pretty much couldn't focus on anything but her face, so of course he "forgot" she was wearing the dress & didn't notice they'd stopped dancing.
The male head of the Russian royal family wasn't called a king; he was a tsar/czar & his wife was the tsarina/czarina.
Something I didn't learn until years after seeing this movie is this was based on the woman who claimed she was Anastasia but was actually a mentally disturbed woman who jumped off a bridge in Berlin, survived, & developed amnesia; she kept claiming in the hospital she was taken to that she was a Romanov but when her fingerprints were taken as part of the investigation into her identity, it was discovered that she was Franziska Schanzkowska (aka Anna Anderson), a Polish factory worker with a history of mental illness. It suddenly hit me, what that bearded guy in Titanic was talking about (that Russian babe, Anesthesia 😂) & I learned the basics of the case from an episode of Unsolved Mysteries.
This was one of, if not, my favourite princess movie when I was a little girl ❤️❤️ it’s so underrated

This is literally one of my all time favorite movies. It's sooo good!
This is such a nice way of looking at the Romanov Royal Family in a pink glass but I still could not shake the fact that they are all murdered. Still, Anastasia is still my favorite princess. Even though Disney bought Fox a long time ago, Anastasia is still a Fox princess for me.
"Who knew something so graphic could be in such a light movie?" Lol this is animated but it's incredibly dark. Rasputin sells his soul, murders her entire family, and then sends evil spirits to literally kill her. Plus her whole story from the amnesia to a tragic childhood as an orphan to being literally homeless.
The whole movie has this wistful, melancholy tone to it from the visuals to the musical elements. That's so unique for an animated children's movie- it's a fairly serious movie and the few jokes are toned down or even scary (the gags with Rasputin decomposing). Plus, the animation style is like no movie I've seen before. It uses so much texture for 2D animation and adds those dynamic sparkles to really give certain places and things a sense of grandeur. The color grading isn't very bright or saturated like you'd expect in a children's movie.
I think the songs, while maybe not as fun and dance-y, are some of the most beautiful to come from an animated movie. They are quite orchestral, have choruses, and have a sadness to them that touches some blue part of my soul. Even the fun ones and the whole score. They also have a minor (as in chords) feel which is such a vibe. Once Upon a December is a song that lives in a melancholy part of my heart, though there aren't many animated movie songs vying for the spot. In the Dark of the Night is also a favorite childhood song.
Overall, I'm glad this movie is getting more attention nowadays. I think it's one of the most visually stunning animated children's movies with a haunting theme and score that really sticks with you. It's so wonderful when movies trust children with dark and/or sad movies. Young kids don't only like happy, light-hearted, even optimistic movies. Their feelings are deeper and more complicated than you'd think and they deserve a range of movies that reflect that.

When this movie was made, we still didn’t know what I had to happen to the actual anesthesia and it was an unsolved mystery until the tech era
So as we know these are all historical figures except for like Dimitri, but Rasputin’s experiences really led u to kinda believe he really was involved with dark magic. Dude was killed several times and never stayed dead. They even tried drowning him with rocks attached to him and still he survived😭
I think Dimitri was based on a real prince who believed in Ana strongly because he met Anastasia as a child.

The entire story surrounding Anastasia but also Rasputin is so interesting, i remember taking about all those thing in history class in Germany, and let’s just say in real life their story are the furthest away from anything in this movie….well maybe Rasputin is quite similar 👀

Your issues with Dimitri's art is just Don Bluth films inconsistencies. All of their animated movies in the era were like that and had some really off cels.
This movie is historical fiction. The intro scene is relatively true. There really was a religious figure who swore revenge on the monarchy, who took several attempts to kill. The intro scene, where the grandmother says she never saw Anastasia again, was a quote from Anastasia's true grandmother. You can watch the interview in the DVD extras.
