18th Century Mac & Cheese | Stump Sohla

- Welcome to Stump Sohla, where we use a big ol' game-show-style wheel to try and stump one of the internet's most talented chefs, Sohla El-Waylly! This week, a comfort food made complicated with no modern tools or stove; just an open fire and some incredible willpower. Will Sohla get stumped? Well it's the first episode of her new show, so it's thematically unlikely - but enough of that, let's dig into some Revolutionary-War-era mac and cheese!

Welcome to the BCU, Sohla!
Cool to see her here !
Welcome Sohla! Excited to see you on here as a regular cast member!
bcu rhymes with this channel is amazing
Babish is The capitan america, and sohla is ironman
I’ve been waiting for the notification! So so glad to see Sohla after months of no BA
this is a power move. congrats on all your success dude. Sohla was great.
Yes.. Big power move!
Not a flex at all. No way.
You're great too! I'm a big fan
@@Sakuramo97 Same!!
Sohla can definitely prove as a Robin or Superman to Babish
"Because back then they died young" 😂😂😂 laughed so hard. What a great, natural host. Love her, and this.
Any chance you're going to join BCU, YSAC?
If YSAC joins BCU I will be happy
Hi daddy
shes got perfect host vibes! im excited to see whats next

The fact that Sohla not only has her own show now, but that the entire premise is based around her basically being a culinary genius? Poetic.
She IS a culinary genius and I don't want to hear otherwise
Shes amazing. But I'd argue she never needed BA or the drama to show that she is a culinary master
She truly deserves it.
She is the best first addition to the Babish Culinary Universe!
She's so talented it's INSANE
This man is legitimately so wholesome. He changed his name at the risk of losing years of branding, just to do something good and genuinely entertaining. Really excited to see this channel keep growing and evolving.
And thats what hero’s do
and he still has the binging segments so we all win
I am not sure it was just to do something good, or to make charity so to say. I think he knows Sohla is extremely talented and that she will be an asset for his brand. It's a very intelligent move since we all love Sohla and we will subscribe to his channel also because of her (at least I just subscribed :-D ). I'm really excited too, to see where this channel is going! :-D
@@shaitangoetia8406 yes ! Also I imagine he might not want to be attached to the word “binging” in relationship to the eating disorder
I wonder if he changed the name of his channel to letters starting with a 'B' as an "in your face" to BA?

My personal philosophy on life.
I feel personally attacked
I don't see anything wrong with that philosophy. Sounds like a happy, productive life. What more could you want?
I did NOT think I would feel happy today and laugh so hard. THANK YOU, SOHLA and ANDREW!
She is an amateur, where's the nutmeg?
When we said that we wanted Sohla to have her own show, this isn’t what we had in mind.
Actually, this is better than we had in mind. Way, way better.
Came here to say this, I’m so thrilled we finally have a Sohla show!

Why must it be a communist name
democratic like 1st world democracy, or like, north korea
Why is no one talking about Sohla cooking in tiny fires with walnut shells when she was little?!? How is this not the most telling and also adorable image of little Sohla?
"I didn't have any friends" she said with a radiant smile, and I felt that
I felt it, too. I used to cook in secret and I used to excavate river clay and sculpt it and set it over a campfire in my secret spot in the woods
I used to put grubs and worms in little cages I made out of twigs.
What a legend. I just hit sticks against things.
Shes so precious my heart can’t take it
Babish staring into Bon Appetite’s eyes: “I am the captain now.”
Bon Appetite is no more.
Now is the age of Babish.
My exact thought! xD Spot on, Will, spot on.
You win the internet!!
But first you want to make sure everyone knows each other
TMW Sohla can get a better deal with Babish than a huge corporation.
Can we talk about the fact that this man went from making turkey burgers in his apartment to running an entire cooking network. Like wow.
Good lord. I think I shed a tear reading this.
Our boy is growing up.
Absolutely love to see it

@@alanguenley635 a lot of them chose to leave, no?

I'm sad that I won't see sohla interact with Brad and Chris anymore, but I love to see her in a place where she is valued, appreciated and challenged. I have never followed this channel, but now I have to.
I don't mean to seem uninformed but I am, what exactly happened with sohla and bon appetit?
@@TGD16 the chief editor of BA test kitchen was a racist asshole and POC were severely underpaid and given a lot less space in their videos compared to their white colleagues. After the chief editor was fired there was a lot of talk about making more equitable contracts but POC were still severely underpaid and under featured. A lot of BA test kitchen cooks left the BA test kitchen video production, some left the company all together. If you Google it there are a lot of articles that explain it better than I can.

Sohla: "Was there Mac & Cheese in the 18th Century?"
Me, who knows that Thomas Jefferson loved it so much that he imported it from France in quantities that almost caused a shortage: "Probably, I'm not sure."
Huh.... I learned something new today
I know this too and in great detail. The funny short version is he loved it and imported both macaroni and the cheese from France so it could be made here because his noodle machine had issues. The sad longer version was he sent his enslaved hostage, James Hemings, who was also his wife’s half brother to France to be trained as a chef. Hemings would have been free in France but he likely was threatened before leaving for France and then to return back to the US because his siblings and mother were still back in the US as enslaved hostages too. He is the one who made macaroni and cheese famous in the US and Thomas Jefferson received all the credit. James Hemings killed himself at 36 years old. But yeah, macaroni and cheese existed in the 18th century.
I’m happy she came in this channel, cause now I’m blessed with this face. (Is that insensitive?)
Look up James Hemings sometime.

@Davin she ran her restaurant business into the ground. This just in: Sohla succesfully assembling the pot on the fire, saying a simple 'yeah' and then agressively yeeting her gloves onto the couch is a wholeass culinary mood.
Since reading this made me laugh VERY loudly, here's a time stamp so everyone can enjoy this moment 5:45
Comments: "Give Sohla her own show"
BA: "Not only will we not, but we won't pay her properly either"
Babish: *Gives Sohla a show*
She really deserves it
BA: Surprised Pikachu face
I’m confused? What happened?
@@Lathien001 Sohla used to work at Bon Appetit but unlike her other (white) coworkers, Sohla wasn't paid for her appearances on various shows, wasn't paid the same amount as her co-workers despite doing the same amount of work or more with the same amount of experience. In addition, the CEO (I think?) was exposed to frequently mistaking the POC at work for each other, would make frequent inappropriate comments about race, etc.

Knowing that she was being forced on-camera (for no extra pay) while the execs tried to make it look subtle makes a lot of sense in retrospect...
Holy crap, is that what was happening? They just had her to "happen" to be in the kitchen to provide assistance whenever someone needed help? Wow...That's grimy.

He should slowly bring on everyone from BA to expand the BCU
I remember about 3 or 4 years ago seeing your il timpano vid and thought: "I like this dude, I'm gonna see what he puts out"
then 2 years ago when I was kicked out of my house and sent to another country to at least spend time with family if I was gonna be homeless. Spent the last of my money on that plane ticket, and on that flight I had downloaded a bunch of videos, including yours. When I finally got to my destination and I was finally with my abuela, I showed her the beef wellington video and she looked at me and said that we should do it. And right there was the moment you turned me from a vagrant addict into an aspiring chef. Once I got back home I immediately signed up for uni. Now I'm currently enrolled in Culinary arts and business admin as a minor. And it was all because of that beef wellington. You and my abuela are the reason why I cook

One of my favorite things about this series is it positions a brown women as an expert, who is so good at her craft normal cooking is too Easy, So she has to be challenged. This is especially wonderful considering how she got to the BCU. More brown lady experts!
Wack
I'm pretty sure that she's more than her colour. She's an expert because of her skills and personality, not her race.
@@yukononun well yeah obviously she is, I don’t think they were trying to come off like they only saw her for her colour. But you can’t really ignore the reason she was mistreated in BA was likely due to her colour, since she is inarguably incredibly talented at her craft and deserves recognition. I think maybe the commenter was trying to acknowledge all of that, and sort of celebrate something that isn’t seen in western media as often as it should be, which is a brown woman actually being given the chance to show how skilled and talented and wonderful she is without it being like a “token” or something. She’s the main focus of this show, it’s all about what she can do, whereas on BA she was often swept to the sidelines and kind of ignored. Now she’s able to shine, and it must be nice for other brown women to see her succeeding, so I don’t see how it’s wrong to call attention to that since it is a lovely thing. Yes, everybody is more than just their race, but it’s still a big part of most people’s identity, and it undeniably can mean people aren’t treated as fairly as they should be just because of their colour. So it’s nice to be able to see Sohla, a brown woman who has been treated unfairly before, getting the chance to shine. But like I’m a white girl from Scotland so I’m just guessing, so please anybody who has more authority than me to speak on this chime in so there will actually be a meaningful perspective instead of my outsiders opinion hahaha

Power move.
No Brad.
@@twopointninenerds no?
I would not be upset with that power move.
@@twopointninenerds Brad is hilarious and has amazing chemistry with Andrew though
BA Fans, Pre Blow-Up: I’d love a series that lets Sohla use all that weird creativity she’s clearly exploding with and do some really off the wall stuff.
BA: or, hear me out, we don’t and also act like she isn’t one of the most valuable and creative people we’re fortunate enough to work with
Babish: well, if you don’t want that gold mine, I think I know where I’ll start digging...
Honestly so glad that my dream series with my favorite chefs are coming together in a way that isn’t as douchey and exploitative. Love this and love y’all.
I know! When she did the dessert carbonara I was like can we have an entire series of her just exploring stuff like this?????
The really if a gold mine! I love this!
Missed chance to say "off the Waylly stuff"
I wanted the whole ba team 😭
100% agree - the bon appetit explosion kinda exposed a lot of shit in the industry which hopefully leads to more good stuff like this
Sohla: “Did they have mac and cheese in the 18th century?”
Townsends: "Am I a joke to you?"
I, for one, support this collab.
I need this crossover episode. Three actually. One with Townsends and Babish together, and one each where they have to mimic the other's vid style... and use the other's kitchen.
Thomas Jefferson brought mac and cheese to America from France. He's been kicking ass as the ambassador to France!
Fr fr man, they need to hit up townsends the main food reenactor
THIS !!!! Both of them need to crossover only for this specific theme
I didn’t know this channel. Saw Sohla, they gave her a show: subscribed in seconds.
I can perfectly imagine how it all happened: she came home late at night, found Babish sitting on a armchair with an unnecessary eyepatch. "Miss El-Waylly, have you ever heard of the Babish initiative?"
It can truly be the beginning of something epic.
That BETTER be how it happened!
😭
Deleted scenes.
We need to see this re-enacted on the channel
Sohla Stark!
"People just ate all the cheese they wanted to eat. And then they died."
This is my new favorite quote.
I so want this on a shirt...
Lol. I was laughing out loud.
Finally Sohla's talent is getting showcased on camera. She was my favorite chef back at BA's channel and I'm so glad she seems to be doing great! She really deserves it and I hope more success comes her way.
I thought the same thing!
I'm really happy to see Sohla back and I think it's so great you're friends and you used your platform to make this happen.
Sohla is so delightful. I didn’t realize how much I missed her until this very moment
When bon appetit crashes and burns, Andrew comes to the rescue
patryk ruszel vinny is with babbish too!
@@rudeminnesotan I thought Vinny left too
@@calvinlim9485 He did but way before the BA issues got as bad as they did
@@biggdaddy202003 I thought he left Babish too
I hope I am not asking for a drama but what happened to bon appetit?
This is what sohla deserves and I’m here for it. She was so under appreciated on the other channel. It was sickening to find out she was getting under payed. I am kinda young so it was really devastating for some reason when I find out but truthfully it happens a lot of places. Just hidden in plain sight.
OMG this made me so happy! I never realized how sweet and endearing Sohla is without the pressure BA put on her when they just co-oped her into videos. I knew she was brilliant, but I didn’t realize how personable she was
This is easily one of the most heart-warming surprises in YT history. Excited for more of you two!!!
I woke up to take a test today on got treated with this. It's a good fucking day
'People just ate all the cheese they wanted and then they died' sounds like how i want to go out of this world
I just ate a bowl of rice that was mostly cheese and hot sauce. Am I gonna die now? I feel death approaching 💀
I'm already two steps ahead of you, friend.
@@ArianaCapraro My question is why?
Take me to then
@@ArianaCapraro Maybe, but you can also say that you truly lived.
"People just ate all the cheese they wanted and then they died."
Alright sick, I know what I'm doing next weekend
Was gonna say seems like nothings changed
I absolutely love this line, had me rolling.
i feel both seen, and loved
Sadly, it's the Mac not the cheese that is killing us now.
@Michelle wat.
For the record, I'm of Dutch descent and have never had issues digesting lactose. I don't think that makes me Lat-In or whatever, I think I'm just fortunate.
Wth is “make it sad” on the wheel xD
Might just entail Sohla dressing like a goth, not smiling or laughing at anything, being super pessimistic, and even if it turns out great, she ends the episode with "I don't care, everything sucks/I'm dead inside".
Gives me a massive throwback to the bubble bass burger from binging where make it cry was just adding onions. Maybe? I don't know
Anyone here tries to make it
You cry into it to add salt
She just makes a depression era 8 course meal
