Good video man, think in burned my clutch on a hill. Just lost power to wheel completely had to push back to road to tow it home. Bike will idle in whatever gear with clutch out. Your video definitely help me understand how to inspect the clutch. Will tackle this weekend. Any update on the second video?
Hey Casey, Yes the 2nd video as well as about 10 more KLR related ones are coming soon. Sadly I moved across the country and changed careers, so my life is not as stable as it was when I first recorded. However I have in the last two weeks started to edit again!!!!!! They should be showing up soon! Sorry for the delay, but as you know life's a bitch sometimes :) good luck on the inspection!
i noticed my rpm was reading high compared to my mph in fith gear. I have an 08 with about 17000 miles on it. I was thinking it is my clutch. When yours started slipping what was it like?
+Geoatv Campatv My RPM's in 5th are usually 5K for 70 mph. All my problems where in low gears, 1st 2nd, where there are really high torque values. So my engine, when hard accelerating tending to red line instead of having a steady climb with the mph like it should.
I just bought a 2012 klr wouldn’t go in neutral adjusted the cable out seems to have already been adjusted do you think it’s the clutch cable are clutch? I’m a complete mechanical idiot
Hey thats a great question, sadly I've never had to do that, if you drop something inside the oil pan a magnet on a stick might help retrieve it, if that's you problem.
Sorry I missed this question, I was at about 7k when I changed it. I drive a lot off road, I do woods trails where I'm the biggest bike by 200cc's at least. I also weigh 300lbs (I'm very tall) so woods and really heavy ride = a lot of clutch usage.
I have a 2012 klr 650. My bike wouldn't start in neutral unless i had the clutch pulled in. How do you know if you have a bad clutch? What exactly needs to be replaced?
And using way to big ratchet. I use a small 1/4" drive ratchet for anything smaller than a 14mm socket head. It is way too easy to strip threads from bolts into aluminum.
Hey, great question, yes I did get it fixed, sadly I fixed it and started my year of insanity, I've been switching careers, and moved three times to as many different states. I'm finally set back up and I will be editing the repair video as well as a number of other ones I've been able to film but not edit. Should see posts within a week or two.
+Haldor hey thanks, yeah you can loosen. I took mine off to paint, and it is easier to reinstall the side cover. However you're totally right you can get away with not removing it! Also my procedure is a mirror of Cyclepedia and a few other sources. I wasn't going to argue with the pros ya know ;-)
I never have gotten the idea of "highway pegs" on a dual sport bike??? I mean REALLY someone wants to spend THAT much time in the saddle that they need another place to rest their feet? Get a goldwing or whatever
To each there own, for me I would never get a bike with that much protection, honestly I want a naked bike all day! I'm 6'10" with a 40" inseam so I also can't fit on a Goldwing, or most any bike with a saddle seat, I needed the banana seat. Also for me, even with a larger bike and banana seat, standard pegs are still a bit confining. So even going down the street I throw my feet up on the pegs. Also I love my hog on long road trips, a Goldwing can't do 300 miles in the morning and go mudding in the evening. So in the end, each there own, and only socialist would want to put down a person for having their own ideas! ;-)
Thanks for making the video
Thank you for this very informative video! This is my first bike and I'm really excited to get it running again soon!
Appreciate the time making the video.
Thank you, great info and video..
Thanks man, glad you like it!

hey i was just wondering if you need to take off the under carriage where the oil drain plug is do you need to disassemble the whole engine ?

How many miles did your KLR650 have when you changed the clutch?

No reason to disassemble the rear brake like that. Just loosen the 10mm bolt that holds it to the pivot spring and pull the lever out of the way.

Haldor is a pro for sure! Just sayin....
