    I followed this chaps instructions and hey presto the Clio is 100% dry even after heavy rain , mastic is a very good fix , I bought a reel on eBay and I've got loads left over . It is a very fiddly job taking all the bolts out , you need to have faith ! Many thanks for posting this video , you've saved my life !

    We had exactly the same issue with a 2005 Clio , bought the mastic from eBay and did the repair in approx 2 hours , completely dry now !
    It's a bit fiddly refitting the drain pipes but overall it's pretty straightforward , many thanks to the author for posting this video !

    thank you ! after cleaning out the drain holes and testing with water , the rain still came in so ..I followed your video and now it is perfect ! I used white mastic sealing strip 2.5mmx19mmx5metres from eBay £7.50 I had to trim off a small amount when sticking it to the plastic frame of the sunroof with a scalpel , and using some of the backing strip to press it down ,then recovered it with backing strip till I had it in place on the car then removed the backing paper , took me about 2 hours to do all of the job . big thank you ....

    Thanks for the video. I was intending to use silicone, but this was so much easier and lass messy. I bought some 6mm x 8mm butyl tape from Amazon and it did the job perfectly. After applying the tape to the sunroof frame, I temporarily protected the exposed side of the mastic with some of the backing tape so that I could position the frame in the car without the tape "grabbing" before I was ready. Once I was happy that it was in the right place, I eased the backing tape off and bolted it up. Progressively tightening the bolts in several stages allowed the mastic to settle. It oozed out a little as the bolts were tightened, but it was easy to remove the excess once it had stopped oozing.

    Really good video. Just fixed my Clio (bought for a bargain £500) today following this video. Tested it with the hose pipe, and seems good........ Thanks!

      P.S. Mastic tape worked a treat. Definitely need a ratchet spanner though...... :-)

      +Andy W what size tape did you use?

      JamesI used 6mm x 5mm mastic sealant tape. I got it from eBay. It is still on eBay; item no 151868049284 and is £6.50 for a full roll. This is far more than you need to be honest.It really has worked a treat - we have had a lot of rain since and the sunroof has never leaked at all.I would re-iterate the need for a ratchet spanner. I started without one and it took me about 2 - 3 hours to get the bolts out... :-( I made the investment for the reassembly and it took a fraction of the time. The bolts are just a bit awkward to get at and you can't get a normal ratchet in the space for most of them.Good luck with the job.
      Andy

    Thanks very much for this useful and helpful upload. I used silicone a year ago. It made an appalling mess of my car. Wish I had seen this vid first.!

    Very helpful information. Followed what you did and it worked very well. Thanks for making this available. I put the straight lengths of backing paper back in place before lowering the sunroof into position and then eased the backing paper off again to ensure sunroof went back in the exact location. Thanks again.

    Great video - thank you. It seams than in my sons car, it was blocked drains... but it wasn't obvious there was even a drain to block until watching the video!

    My thanks and appreciation to you good sir, for making this very useful video. My new seal is holding well so far (2 weeks on) despite all this heavy rain we've been having recently. How you replaced the tailgate/door lock solenoid before? I for one, would really appreciate a video on that as my boot door won't open at all now! Fix one thing, and another pops up, I'll never buy French again!

    I took the plunge and attacked my leaky sunroof,this afternoon.I can't even wax my car so what was I thinking of??? Thanks to your video,I was abe to remove the sunroof,strip the old and very perished original sealant,apply the mastic tape and put it back - so it seems - well.
    The tip to get the ratchet spanner was invaluable,no way it could have been done without it & re-connecting the drainage tubes had to be the most difficult part by far but thanks to frustrating,I grabbed hold of the tube and simpy pulled an pressed it against the frame,in order to secure the connection.
    What I did learn quickly was the inside edge of the frame is as sharp as a damn razor blade and ended up cutting up both my hands 3 times - big ouch!
    As an added bonus,the rattling noises that were there every time I would drive the car,have gone about 95% so i now have a quiet car.Thank you so much for this video,huge help and a massive saving.

      I had a problem with the butyl tape which didn't stick to the plastic frame so had to lay the strip on the roof area where the frame sits. Did you have that problem?

    • @RickyG_PT
      @RickyG_PT 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had no problems with the tape,it worked great.

    • @pullgees
      @pullgees 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't understand it, it caused me a lot of agro. Did you use any solvent to clean the old sealant away?
      As you sad a ratchet spanner is a must for that job and the drain pipes were awkward.

    • @RickyG_PT
      @RickyG_PT 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only used a small amount of white spirit to remove whatever small amounts of the old sealant were remaining.It took about 2 or 3 minutes to dry,in which time,I used some of the white spirit to clean up the roof of the car were the frame had/was goin to sit.

    • @pullgees
      @pullgees 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used brake fluid, I was following a tip on another video as white spirit can attack some plastics and rubber. I cleaned it off but not enough I suppose.

    Can't quite see in the video, where abouts do you put the new seal? Is it butted up to the inside edge?

  • @pullgees
    @pullgees 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had a problem with the butyl tape. It was a bit like blue tak only much more sticky and black. The problem was that it would not stick to the frame so consequently when I turned the frame over to position, most of it fell out. So I ended up laying the tape on the roof when the frame sits. After tightening up the bolts quite a lot squeezed out and was not easy the remove as it is so elastic and clung stubbonly.
    i hope I've done the job. waiting for the next downpour with fingers crossed.

    Hello Forty
    Great video! Is 5mm Mastic Tape acceptable? Can't find 10mm and it looked like 10mm on your video.
    Was quoted £165 for the repair so im happy to have found a video as clear and concise as this one.

    • @pjanse11
      @pjanse11 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Hall I opted for the 6mm, seems to be holding - did you go for the 5mm in the end?

    • @jameshall2195
      @jameshall2195 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I did. I ended up running two strips side by side just in case. Seems to have worked as had plenty of rain to test the seal.
      Hardest part was taking the glass out as the plastic tops spun when trying to undo the nut. Had to get needle nose pliers to hold it still.
      All in all an awkward job especially not long after spinal surgery! Better than paying someone else to do it though.

      I didn't double it up, although wish I had now for what time it would have cost me! Doh! Thanks James.

    Our neighbour had a 1998 Clio which had a leaky sunroof. Our 2001 Clio leaks and this 2005 one leaks. That's 8 years' production, from mk1-mk3 and they still didn't fix it. I don't know when they did sort it -anyobe? Piss-poor.

    isnt it amazing that when these manufacturers implement bad designs or use bad materials that wont last that the customers is expected to foot the bill and remedy it rather than recall these cars and fix it with a better seal FOC by a renault main dealer or have in place that if someone has a leaking seal because of bad quality of seal has deteriorated through no fault of owners can leave it into renault main dealer - after all the owners pay enough for the car in the first place when they buy the car new!. - if its a case that it is a common thing that clio sunroofs leak (which they do) and its because of the shoddy seal they have used .. then consequently renault should cover the costs when the seal breaks down

      However anyone else looking look for Butyl tape or Mastic Butyl Tape, those got me results. Ebay was best for 5mmx6mmx9m .
