  • Dozens of giant hornets were coming and going from the entrance of a wild Japanese honeybee colony. We captured them with a glue sheet.

      That's what having no real natural predators within your native habitat can do to your species, you will never develop a "stay away, danger" singal if you've always been the only apex predator around.

    A glass jar with a relatively large mouth is sufficient to catch these wasps. They are so heavy that they cannot fly upwards. Once they are in they are stuck since they cannot climb up the smooth glass surface. If they are attracted to some over ripe fruit ( grapes, figs etc. ) in a couple of inches of water at the bottom, it is a fatal trap for them. Watching them clamber on top of each other to stay out of the water is as satisfying as watching them stuck on this glue plate. ;)

    I lived in Japan for six years in Chiba prefecture, Ichikawa city. On my days off I would walk around the little narrow streets that didn’t really seem to be straight lines. More like an ant farm but that’s what makes it so cool. Totally Japanese looking houses everywhere (I say this because the more modern Japan becomes the rarer it is to see these kind of houses. I had to clarify this because if you travel the world, haters will always try to find something to hate in the comments, lol :) and the streets were always super clean.
    There’s a park that I used to go to when I lived there called Ichikawa Koen. Inside this park was a beautiful Koi lake. Some of the most beautiful Koi I’ve ever seen as well. They had this raised concrete walkway to keep you above the grass to avoid getting wet from the marshlands and to avoid hurting any wildlife and insect populations. They also had this amazing rain forest bio-dome that was absolutely breathtaking. It was so well managed and groomed. There were tropical butterflies flying around as well. And they had a little monkey exhibit too. In the same bio-dome they had a dessert exhibit as well that reminded me of California, Joshua Tree.
    On my walks though I would hear loud buzzing but I never seen what it was. One day I finally found out what it was when I seen gigantic suzume bachi (Japanese Hornets) all flying around a spot in the ground near a tree. I guess that’s where they were living. I almost got stung a few times and even seen some old ladies trying to swat them away while walking together. I never heard of anyone actually being stung but I decided to buy a badminton racket, a couple of huge cans of Kirin Ichiban beer and I went to town on those things for a good couple of hours, lol. Some old Japanese dudes where laughing while I was doing it too, lol. I don’t want to kill all of them since they do serve an important role in the ecosystem there but damn that was fun, lol. I miss Japan so much…

    The Japanese honeybee is the only domesticated bee that has a defense against these hornets from hell. They surround a scout that enters their hive and suffocate it with their body heat, bringing the temperature up to over 117 degrees, enough to kill the hornet but not the bees. I have a better idea than the glue trap for that hornet's nest: spray some solvent such as carburetor cleaner into the opening, which will kill the entire nest.

    To all the nincompoops worried about the hornets: Japanese bees are capable of defending themselves against these monsters. They can defend themselves against a single scouting hornet, maybe 2. But once they get the food pheromone out and a few more show up the hornets can easily ravage a hive, even one with 10s of thousands of honeybees.

      Yes but if there are 3 or more hornets the bees lose a lot of bees and prob won’t get food for winter

    "It could be that the wild colony is the weaker of the two colonies" nah they didnt attack the boxed hive cause the door frame is too small for a fat suzumebachi to fit through.

  • @MagikFingers420
    @MagikFingers420 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Seriously? The colony in the box had tiny slits that the hornets couldn't fit thru to attack them, the wild colony had a huge front door(hole entrance) to allow the hornets in.

    How do you protect your honey bees from these hornets?

    • @enbeast8350
      @enbeast8350 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Strong hives can protect themselves from scouts. During hornet season, I believe they use some nets with holes big enough for the bees but small enough to make sure hornets can't get in.
      Hives that are strong enough to defend against scouts will retreat into their homes to try and draw the hornet inside and once it's inside, the hive will swarm the hornet and vibrate to increase the temperature and O2 levels. The hornet dies of either overheating or suffocation as the bees can handle higher temperatures and O2 levels than the hornets.
      This is only successful for the scouts. More than a few hornets could wipe out a hive (I don't know how many though). This channel does have a video somewhere showing a hive defending against a hornet if you scroll around for it!

      Strong colonies can protect from one or two maximum any more and they are basicly dead if the keeper doesn't help

      You can fit a mesh grill to the entrance of the hive that'll allow the bees through, but not the much larger hornets.

    • @mustangmckraken1150
      @mustangmckraken1150 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      They also pointed out in another video that the hive entrance is metal and spaced to allow bees to get in and out but to small for hornets to use.

  • @emailbenjie

    n parts of Japan, people consider these hornets beneficial because they remove pests, such as harmful caterpillars, from crops. The hornets' bodies also contain nutrients, and have been used as ingredients in Japanese food and some strong liquors. Some people believe the hornets' essence has medicinal benefits.
