    Thank you for clarifying about the firmware update for the 990 I was skeptical on getting it because of hearing that problem and I’m glad it was fixed and will now be making my purchase

      Same here - was hearing about problems but then heard about firmware update. Bought this stick a couple months ago with a 40GBs ORICO enclosure. Have been thrilled with the performance. Mind-blowing for an external drive on my 24" iMac.

    Got the 2T 990 Pro for $110. 980 Pro just isn’t worth it for the price it’s going right now unless you just really don’t trust the newer version’s durability.

      In Canada the 1TB version of the 980 pro has often been going for 80 CAD, and the 990 has been going for 100 CAD. For the 2TB versions, it's been 140 and 160 (which is proportionally less of a price difference), and the models with heat sinks were all available for 10 CAD more. All of these prices were very good, but for a 1TB drive, I don't think the 990 pro was worth an extra 25%
      Now, if you were putting together a new system, and you were planning to install the OS onto the NVMe SSD, or if you are buying the drive for a laptop, I'd probably recommend going with 2TB over 1TB, but I already have my OS installed on an older SSD, and have no plans to migrate the install to the NVMe drive, and I also have a ton of space on mechanical drives in my system, so didn't want to pay the extra for a 2TB drive. Also, I have my OS installed on a drive which has advanced power loss protection, making it safer to leave the OS on that drive.

    I have chosen to avoid gen5 nvme drives purely because they run so bloody hot and require active cooling, not to mention the early adopter tax for crash test dummies. For myself reliability and endurance are my main points of interest and don't see any practical reason to "upgrade" from 5000-7000 MB/s gen4 2tb for OS and games and gen3/4 3000-4000 MB/s for my quick mass storage. Spinning rust is fine for my NAS and slow system storage needs where again i want reliablity and endurance even if i have to use slower spinning disks.

      Good decision. Unless you absolutely need the speeds, ie your work requires large file transfers and it would save time then go with the latest. Otherwise even gen 3 is fast enough for games. Games simply dont utilize nvme ssd speeds bar few games. Direct storage still isnt adopted for some reason.

      Between the 980 and 990, maybe. Even between those two I’d imagine the speed to copy large files onto and off of the drives have a difference. Samsung states 40%+ speeds.

    ....having both the 990 Pro and the T700 Pro from crucial on PCI Gen5 with a 7800X3D, the T700 Pro gives me 11,080 MB/s in sequential writing while the 990 pro only 7,400 MB/s. The difference is very noticeable while launching games such as MS FS2020 but not really in other applications.

    does it make sense to get 990 Pro for PCIe 3.0 x4 slot in a server/nas with VMs and higher I/O? small blocks random read/writes shouldn't be bottlenecked there, but will its performance at such uses remain maximum? or would dedicated server-grade SSDs justify their higher costs in that regard?

    • @psycl0ptic
      @psycl0ptic ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes... since when you later upgrade to gen4...also the 990 can be had less expensive than the 980.

    • @Andytlp
      @Andytlp ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats what i was thinking. Why buy pcie 3.0 gen 3 ssd, when prie gen 4.0 ssd will probably be faster even if its limited to gen 3.0 speeds and cost same or less. The IOPS should still be higher since it's the stuff that happens on the ssd and theres no way some random iops can saturate the entire pcie 3.0 bus, those random reads dont go into multiple GB/s range, ever. I'm not sure though could be wrong. Old anantech article shows 980 pro ssd having almost identical performance on prie 3.0 and 4.0. 4.0 being slight faster but less power efficient. The difference though is that 990 pro has 400k more IOPS vs 980 pro at 16 thread 32 qdepth operations. But identical 1 thread 1qdepth operations whatever that means.

      @LeCrackDeStalingrad yea, it's my main os drive but to be honest I'd rather wait to see if Samsung somehow fixed the wear issue with the 990 series because the 1 and 2 tb has issues with outwearing faster that then the tbw Samsung says. If you can wait do so for another 2-3 month because the drive is still too new to say. I have the wear issue with both 1-2 tb drives and can't say much about the 4TB drive right now.

    I really doubt that any NAS running a Celeron and pcie gen 3 will really take full advantage of either one of these drives. In my option write life is more important then speed. Most people don't have a network and or workstation fast enough to really notice the difference. Even the slowest nvme pcie 3 drive is faster then any HDD.

      When I installed a 970 to replace my hard drives, the difference was white and black. Windows would easily take 30 minutes to boot, but the 970 brought it down to well under 1 minute. Upgrading to a 990 soon because it was on sale, and I need the 970 for a separate PC build, so I suppose I'll see.
