  • After waiting so long for a new Zelda game, one has to ask, did Tears of the Kingdom justfy its 6+ year development time?

    TotK greatly improves on the two main ideas of BotW: The physics engine, and seamlessness. Considering they pulled both of these off so well, on a SWITCH, with the pandemic undoubtedly getting in the way, I'm baffled we got a finished product at all. Whenever I dive from a sky island all the way to the Depths, or create a crazy bokoblin-killer-mech, I realize something. The devs behind this game are literal WIZARDS.

    Don’t think it’s ever worth waiting that long for the game we got. The more I think about it, the more I realize they could have gone a much different direction, better game and for less time waited

      Facts. First ever genuinely poor Zelda game.
      For a 6 year wait, how could they have not at least given us a new map. They BUILT BotW from the ground up in less time than we waited for Tears of the Kingdom.

      And aside from the characters I already liked from BotW: (Sidon and Riju) the sages were no replacement for the champions in terms of emotional connections. Watching four characters come to grips with their deaths, and the different reasons they're champing at the bit to perform one final act from beyond the grave, is way more compelling than "Yes! Teamwork Guys!!!" in every cutscene.
      I think the climax is the only thing Tears did better. That final catch felt like closure for both stories and might be the peak of the whole series.
      That said, my Breath of the Wild preference is very small margin.

    I think that TOTK is simply not game for everyone, if u cannot enjoy the ultrahand function, you miss like 50% of fun this game can offer. For me, it was worth the way, because now I can be even more creative with the ways of killing enemies or just gettin around the map, there is simply no other game with these physics.

      @1996HerreraJohn 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Found myself using the hoverbike 90% of the time. Even used it to cheese the water & fire temple. Ultrahand while a cool concept in my opinion never had that one defining moment for me throughout the almost 150hrs I put in the game. Lastly, while it's cool to use zonai devices to take on enemy bases is fun in the very beginning but as you progress it becomes much faster to just shoot fused arrows & your powerful weapons than to sit there & mess with a janky system.

    • @natesamadhi33
      @natesamadhi33 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      But thats my issue with ultrahand; it takes up so much bandwidth of the game, but it ultimately has no real relevance in the grand scheme of the game's narrative. Did you need to use ultrahand or any zonai device to defeat Ganon? Nope, you just used the Master Sword. Ultrahand and the Zonai devices were interesting little gameplay gimmicks, but they just felt tacked on top of the greater narrative of the game. The game has alot of ideas & "stuff" thrown in it, but it lacks cohesion, finesse, and thematic consistency. Ultrahand felt janky alot of times to me and just didnt mesh well with the experience.
      Im glad you had fun, but i personally need more out of a game than physics and a wide map. to me, TOTK needed alot of things: a better user-interface; a map with more density & richer interesting content than just shrines and annoying NPCs; a much better reward-system; a combat-system that wasnt broken to high hell; puzzles & temples that werent mind-numbingly tedious; and a story that would actually make me feel something.

    12:14 so true about the master sword bro. How is it that it is bathed in Zelda’s light power for thousands of years and is worse than the one in Botw and only 40 durability? If you don’t wanna make it too op attack wise, keep it at 30 attack (45 against gloom) but it never breaks. Have the fused items break but the master sword absolutely should not

  • @adrianmadsen5551

    Honestly no i don’t think it was worth the wait. My expectations was that they would keep what worked in botw and fix all the issues. For example the puzzles. The dungeons has better music and visuals sure, but the puzzles are so surface level it hurts. Same with the shrines. There are only half a handfull of them thats even memerable. The puzzles of these newer zelda games are nothing compared to the other games. Another issue with the puzzles is that there are absolutely 0 restrictions of what you can do to solve them. For example you can just summon a hover bike any time you want to go where ever you want. Or in a shrine or temple, there is always an obvious, easy, cost effective and unsatisfying way to ”solve” every puzzle instead of doing it an interesting way, for example shooting one bomb at a switch for every switch you see. Thats my main complaint and at this point i wish nintendo would just go back to the linear zelda style

You young-uns don't understand the grind of Zelda (86) or Zelda (91) ((Zelda 2 88 was a joke)) I enjoy a game that lets me escape yet let me do boring things. Comparing Spiderman to Zelda is like comparing apples to oranges. The development time to create a game like Spiderman will always be significant less just because BOTW and TOTK are going for diegetic gameplay. Meaning for Zelda they are creating a physical world and environment the player can interact with anything however they want to even if the developers didn’t think about it that way compared to Spiderman. Spiderman is more of a classic open world game where everything you can interact with was designed by the developers.
    I only played Spiderman 2018 and not the other two games they have made but I did love it I am not trying to say that they aren't good games just that they are both very different games and the development time for them will be very different then any Zelda that is similar to BOTW and TOTK

      I don't think "yes" is that obvious, personally I got too much from TOTK despite its flaws to pretend it wasn't worth waiting. But I get that if it doesn't click for someone either as a sequel or for what it does differently, to them it has been a long wait for an unfulfilling game. While it's worth waiting for a game of that caliber though, it's also frustrating that so much of their effort seems to have been spread on such a large scope but turned out pretty shallow in parts, like the sparse skies, repetitive depths and underwhelming lore / world building.

  • @DaimonAnimations

    I liked it, BOTW and TOTK are my favs, great story complementing each other and also mechanics wise. I've been playing Zelda since the beginnings in the 80's, I know what it feels to start something new.
    I think they needed more DLC for TOTK and the Master mode, I just want to continue to fight the bosses and monsters on a higher difficult level.
    10:35 To be fair when Covid happened, Nintendo did stated that Covid slowed down and made difficult for development. But again, the mechanics used in TOTK as expressed by Western Devs are no joke, they are extremely difficult to pull out. Ascend, Mixing weapons with any item, reverting time, are huge challenges in the video game industry that I bet its what took the most time to develop.
    Nintendo didn't just made a sequel, they made a sequel and created a stupid insane level of programing creating these mechanics for Link to create any vehicle you can imagine, move through any floor and roof, revert time. Western Devs were shocked that Nintendo created something insanely difficult just for a sequel. But now that they developed this mechanics and they have patented them, they are probably gonna use them again in the next Zelda installment or some variation from them and save them the time. (maybe)
    Making games are not easy and when making games this complex, you can't expect them to deliver them fast. Not to mention, since this became a sequel, the already built world of BOTW added constraints for them to develop. Its true they could have improved in a lot of things, flesh out more Ganondorf make more sense of urgency but I'm sure will take notes from this for their next Zelda game. (I hope)

    Totk is a better botw, and that’s fax. The only useful ability we had before was stasis, every single ability in totk is goated and all of them are incredibly useful. Horses were useless in botw. Now I can easily just make a hoverbike, a boat, a sand glider. Just about anything you can think if can easily be built in seconds. Ganon is so much better in this game. The boss fights and the whole story surrounding this ganon were heavily improved. Calamity ganon was okay I guess, I didn’t like how before we fought 4 different ganon variants. It was kind of repetitive. Totk actually had temples again, they were short and easy but at least we had temples at all. And we didn’t have to fight 29 ganon variants again, that gets old quick. We had different unique bosses, actual proper zelda bosses. Not water ganon, fire ganon, thunder ganon, wind ganon, big boi calamity ganon, pig ganon. And the fact that botw ganon(s) was this voiceless monster and had zero dialogue with Link kind of irked me. Another thing Totk improved, ganon is way cooler and more fun to play against here. There’s way more content as well. The depths are massive and filled with tons of lore and loot and we have the sky islands as well. It feels very similar to botw, just more fun. Way more to do, better abilities. But the gameplay for the most part has remained the same. I also liked Totk’s story more but that’s kind of subjective. In defense of BOTW however, the soundtrack was definitely better.

    • @mkjjoe
      @mkjjoe 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Playing devil's advocate, here's why these *don't* make TOTK just better: Abilities _are_ amazing, so I'll leave that. Horses were kinda annoying but sometimes useful in BOTW, now they're useless outside of a few quests and pony points are too superficial, they did nothing interesting with the wildlife which IMO was a strong aspect of immersion. Ganondorf is cool, probably best design and boss fight, but as a character he was under-utilized and basically a repeat of OOT. In BOTW I was underwhelmed to end with Calamity at first, but in retrospect it fits the story and theme perfectly. I don't really prefer having him human to talk about nothing and not show a character arc. The fact that they named temples "temples" doesn't mean they're a perfect form, the approach, theme, music are great, bosses 50/50, Divine Beasts were more involved by shifting parts yourself, now we just blow/splash/bomb/zap a few terminals after possibly cheesing most of the obstacles. Sages are terrible mechanically and forgettable narratively, Champions had room for improvement in BOTW and yet felt better. Sky islands are sparse _and_ repetitive, more like platforms to renew the exploration loop rather than interesting lands to explore like the marketing and starting area may suggest. The Depths have an amazing concept but the single biome and repeated points of interest make it quickly monotone. I don't know what you consider to be "tons of lore" in these new layers but besides vaguely implying that the Zonai "did it all", or repurposed BOTW DLC armor pieces with zero context to make sense, we learn nothing. In BOTW at least, environmental lore came from a variety of biomes with people living there and talking about history or rumors, and a map sprinkled with references to past games.

    The game lived up to most expectations. There are a few shortcomings (not including no DLC), but it's really good. And a steering stick, I had like 10 before, 20 hours hit. You just had bad luck.
