  • A casual look at some of the things that made the Wii U great. I could go on for hours in excruciating detail, but this is just a beginner course.

    I'm so happy that I grew up with a Wii U. I miss posting Sm4sh photos to Miiverse after coming home from middle school, it's the simple things like that

    What us blud so mad about? Clearly this was not meant as a "Switch v1" but it's evident that the Switch took what the WiiU was good at and improved upon those concepts.

    • @arturboy777
      @arturboy777 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What did it improve upon? All the Switch did was merge Nintendo's two markets into one console and people bought into that because spending $300 for one console that does both things is a better value than spending $600 on both a Wii U and a 3DS to have the full Nintendo experience. Other than that the Switch is barebones. Can't even message your friends.

      The only unique feature that the Switch took from the Wii U was playing off-TV. And that was only a bonus for games that supported it. I get what you're saying, but that feature was not the main purpose of the console. Plus, connecting a portable system to a TV wasn't even a new idea. You could do that with the Nomad, PSP, and a few others.

    The wii u pro controller is still to this day the best controller ever. Extremely comfortable, light, insanely good battery life. I think it's better than the switch pro controller, the ps5 controller, and the series x controller.

    I get what you are saying about the intent of design vs the Switch and the Wii U but in reality 99% of games used it in the way that the Switch is used where the tablet either has the game on it or doesn't do anything. Few games really took advantage of the gimmick and fewer still actually created an experience that can't be replicated on the Switch. I do agree though that the Wii U gets unfairly shit on a lot when it is a great console

    • @Caleb_Bravo99
      @Caleb_Bravo99  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Wii U's main gimmick was the dual screens, with the off-TV play just being a bonus feature. But it only works because most devs didn't care to make very good use of the two screens. But games that did make good use of it do not allow off-TV play like Splatoon. I think the DS features of the Wii U are great when used well, and they're better than just playing on a single screen.

    The biggest thing was the timing. 399 was a big ask when the PS4 and Xbox One were right around the corner with better visuals, hardware, and games. If they released in like, 2010 with a 299 price tag and just focused on the better graphics and games it would've done well.

    • @Caleb_Bravo99
      @Caleb_Bravo99  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There's plenty of things they could've done better. I think the quality of the games wasn't a problem, but the optics of the games were. I think 3D World is a better game than Galaxy, but Galaxy looks more enticing.

      @@yn8789 I think the game controls better, and having a run button is a big part of that. Plus, having a ton of levels, way more than Galaxy, has the advantage of making the game more unique and interesting from a level design perspective.

    I disagree that it can't be named as "proto Switch" but I agree this was meant to be a home DS console. It meant to be both: to be proto Switch and to be home DS. First of all what is the Switch? Switch is a hybrid console which you can play on your TV and by holding this tiny screen in your hands. The same you can do with Wii U - play it on TV and play it in so called portable mode, but not far from the main unit. That's why Switch is better - you can play it anywhere because it is independent from the main unit (the dock). But also Wii U is like a DS because a lot of games have dual screen features, like Deus Ex Human Revolution for example or Mass Effect 3. On the gamepad you have your interface and HUD, and on the TV you have gameplay. But also a lot of games, even Nintendo games, don't have such features - on the gamepad you just see a text "Push here to transfer gameplay from tour TV to gamepad", that's it. Just like Switch - because Switch doesn't have a second screen 😊 So Wii U is a proto Switch and at the same time in a lot of games - the home DS.

    • @Caleb_Bravo99
      @Caleb_Bravo99  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Off-TV play on the Wii U was not the headlining feature, and not all games supported it. The Switch connecting to a TV isn't a new feature either, and it wasn't inspired by the Wii U. Several portable systems had done that before. If anything, I'd say it would make more sense to refer to those as "proto-Switch" than it would to refer to the Wii U as that.

    The Wii U Pro Controller really should have had gyro. I remember playing Breath of the Wild and there are some shrines that required gyro for the puzzles, and I was forced to switch to the gamepad just to pass it. Not a game breaking stuff but still

    • @Caleb_Bravo99
      @Caleb_Bravo99  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah that annoyed me too. I would've played on the gamepad if they kept the 2nd screen features, but they scrapped them. Presumably to give parity to the Switch version, so that their new console didn't look worse than Wii U.

    That is a lot of JUST DANCE

    • @Caleb_Bravo99
      @Caleb_Bravo99  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think there's 11 Just Dance games on the console (I accidentally showed 2 copies of 2016). And the Wii U has 197 unique physical games I think, so it's more than 5% of the entire library.

    I loved the WiiU and still use it today. I use it more than I use my Switch. I did not even know that it was a flop until several years later. I just enjoyed the machine for what it was and enjoyed all the good games. There is a bigger battery to buy for the game pad as well. It last for several hours.

    i just got my first wii u last week. it's such a sad thing that i didn't buy this during previous years. then again, i didn't have money and i forgot about it, until i contemplate about buying it when i was in japan. yes, i hear about how bad wii u is and how it will fail if switch did not do well, which it exceeded expectations, but having it in person, feeling the gamepad for the first time... i was like wow. i don't have tv, so the fact i can play games in the gamepad? wow! sure, switch can do that, but my switch it sandwiched between consoles, so it's hard to get it out
    i'm still acquiring games though. i haven't played anything, so can't say it's either good or bad console yet

    The amount of rose tinted glasses and copium in the video is wild. As much as I love my Wii U there are some major flaws and a lack of direction on Nintendo’s part that was really to the detriment of the WiiU

      I definitely like the Wii U more than most people. But what "majors flaws" are you referring to?

    • @JeremySteakHouse
      @JeremySteakHouse 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Caleb_Bravo99 The lack of direction leading to a a large mix of gamepad and controller use (usually turning the gamepad into a cheap gimmick), especially by third parties, the lack of third party studio support (leading to a small library, making getting value out of the console more difficult), the subpar and unintuitive online services, poor marketing choices confusing consumers as to what the Wii U actually is, the maximum of 32gb of built in storage, gamepad battery life was abysmal, and IMO lots of the first party games were great but not the best of the series like you said. Again I say this all as someone who loves my Wii U and still plays it on a consistent basis. You can enjoy something and still have a realistic mindset of its flaws.

    It's funny I'm the exact opposite, my switch is never in the dock. I take it everywhere, all over the house, trips, to work,and stuff like that. I only occasionally dock it and play it on the TV. The games to me just seem better in handheld mode.

    • @Caleb_Bravo99
      @Caleb_Bravo99  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't really have much time outside the house to play it portably. If I'm on my way somewhere, then I'm focusing on getting there. But once I arrive, I'm busying doing the thing I'm there to do. At home, I'd rather just play on the TV because of the bigger screen. And as I said in the video, I think it's a mistake to give a portable system staggered thumbsticks because it's much more uncomfortable to play than what the Wii U had.
