    This bird is almost as terrified as my green cheek conure that I rescued months ago. I have never seen a bird as scared as mine. But with lots of patience and target training, he is now so much better. I can actually get him to step up and hang out with me when I'm doing my own thing around the house. It's a miracle haha! Thanks to birdtricks!

    My Green Cheek was scare of the stick too. I sat down next to his cage and he was on his outside perch that’s attached to the cage. I kept holding the stick and tapping my nose with it while saying touch touch touch. Then I said to him you try it. Scared. After a few minutes of this he reached out and touched the stick. I was so proud of him. We are starting some training. He was a rehome about 4 years ago. My son got him from his friend who owned the store. The lady that dropped him off didn’t want him. Said he was mean. When I first walked into the pet shop and I saw him and he saw me it was a locked on stare on both our parts. He came over to the side of the little cage he was in and up the side of it and we just knew. You my human and you my birdie. I’ve had him ever since. I have so much to learn. Never thought about training him until I saw your videos.

    Only recently found the channel and have been watching loads of old vids. I've no birds of my own and never had any, but it's fascinating to see how training happens, you explain it all so clearly and it makes total sense. And of course your own birds are all amazing, totally clear to see the passion you have for looking after them and making sure they can live their best lives. Love Jinx esepcially, he's a legend. Woo!

    • @Bullen_3
      @Bullen_3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can train your dogs using these techniques. I actually trained my cat to do few tricks,using these target training methods. The first trick I trained her was to lift her right paw. Then left. Then I taught her right paw up then down and left up and down, in same sequence before she got the treat. And also both paws at the same time. Then I taught her the spin. That's all we got so far,but I definitely suggest training your dogs! It's really awesome,to experience this. When they finally got that trick down it's just such an amazing feeling.

  • @audralgale

    After the first clip where the bird was frightened but the one person he bonded with was identified I would have put him back in his cage for a bit so he could calm down and reset before proceeding. I had a rescue Moluccan Cockatoo who was so terrified that it took 3 weeks of me putting my arm into her cage in front of her every 30 minutes each day before she stepped onto my arm. It was 3 years before I stopped getting randomly bitten and we finally had complete trust in each other. She was allowed to roam free all day long and only put in her cage to sleep or when she was frightened. Her cage was her safety zone and once she had been in there for half an hour she was calm and ready to try or see whatever scared her again. I found repetition, like you were doing, worked well because my bird was very curious and wanted to investigate everything.

    Hi

  • @nowandaround312
    @nowandaround312 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    At the beginning they talked about accidentally rewarding bad bird behavior by saying "good girl/boy." I think people do this because for some reason they apply dog behavior to other animals. If a dog is anxious or aggressive, saying "good boy/girl" in that tone humans use when we say that phrase actually can help them calm down rather than triggering them to repeat the behavior. They connect to our voices on an emotional level so it isn't strictly behavioral reinforcement like it would be for a bird.

  • @chrisseabolt94
    @chrisseabolt94 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel like you could have used shaping to get the bird to target, no? A look at the target first *treat*, then a head tilt in the targets direction *treat*, lean in targets direction *treat*, one step in the targets direction *treat* , so on. Would this not have worked?

    Could you use a small stuffed cat or dog toy with a squeaker or bell? Could you use the squeaker as the "clicker" or a kiss noise from your mouth? Some dogs are also scared of the clicker and a click from a pen is softer and less scary. I have also had to click behind my back instead of so close to the pet I am working with. Also, did you ever try "loading" the clicker with the bird before working with him?

    Hi, I am new to the channel. I have a 2 yr male Solomon island eclectus parrot. We are currently trying to work on flighting him, but he has been clipped most of his life. He does not have any motivation for flying. As soon as we try to get him to move somewhere that he can’t reach with his beak, he just gives up. We offer nuts, and he is food motivated, but with flight, he just doesn’t want to try. The only time that he does fly is when he is feeling uncomfortable. Anyone have tips or tricks I could use to teach him to fly?

  • @Pips2351

    I've got a similar hormonal problem with my African grey, but it's ONLY when I'm training with him. Thought it was cause I was feeding him and normally when he starts his regurgitation dance I just ignore him and walk away and he stops. But I'm now thinking, maybe the training is just too difficult / easy / boring for him and a little trickier trick may distract him and not encourage any regurgitation... 🤔🤔

  • @Native079

    Wondering how I can get a consult with you guys? Maybe to better understand the rescue macaw.. he has some similar behaviors except he’s a bit more aggressive. I don’t know what he went through but he’s scared of everything... even the bathing.. and he’s in desperate need of grooming... I just don’t want to terrify him. I started target training but I can’t find a treat that he will take that’s healthy.. he likes peanuts in the shell and I know those aren’t optimal. Tried looking for pinenuts and couldn’t find them.. just want him to be happy. I love him so much already.. I want him to have that companionship.

    Bird tricks! I am 16 and I train animals, from many breeds of dogs, to horses, and I want to get a macaw. I’ve been thinking of rescuing one (that could possibly have behavioral problems) but I don’t mind putting in the time because I am homeschooled and know I have the time. I’ve never had birds before and I really would love to do free flight. I want to rescue a bird because 1, I know their are birds with people who don’t know what they are doing, and 2, I don’t have to money to buy a baby. Do you have any advice? I strictly use positive training when I’m working with dogs and other animals, but I think I know enough about birds to get one but again... I THINK I know enough. I probably don’t know much... 😅 just what training and pressures I’ve been taught from working with fearful horses and dogs.

    • @mustyfan1584

      They really shouldn’t eat significant amounts of meat, as they’re herbivores in the wild. The same reason cats do poorly being fed kibble high in grains, as they’re 100% carnivores in the wild.

    • @moniqueatterbury9482
      @moniqueatterbury9482 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mustyfan1584 even though there is (usually) no real need to add meat to your pet parrot's diet, it's important to remember that parrots are omnivorous animals. Invertebrates are often included in their natural diet. Some species have even been observed consuming vertebrates.

    Is the regurgitation head bob the same as when parrots bob their head to clear their throat? My galah does that if she's got food stuck in her throat, if its the same, how will know the difference? Obviously I don't want to encourage hormonal behavior but I'm worried I or someone else could trigger it & I might not notice 🙈

    Ideal you overcomplicate this kind of training. I don't see the need of using a foreign stick to teach target training. Why don't you do the same with your finger?
    Don't see the reason for the clicker training neither. However the bird has completed the task you whish at 2:48 and you clicked but didn't offer the treats. Ideal the room is far overcrowded, that is why the bird is shy a bit but yet still behaving bravely. The session is boring and too long for the bird, because you are focusing on your achievements only. You didn't put effort into to get the bird excited and encouraged.
