Thank you so much for this video! While I perfer canisters over uprights since canisters are easier for me. I don't mind uprights. I agree with everything you said, canisters are still a win for me!
I agree with you. I have no problem with a good upright.
That being said I’d take a very good canister, like the Zero G, over just about any upright on the market.
@@thomasflynn7797 I understand that perfectly and I agree with you on that!
I’ve always had an upright but as I’m getting older, it’s getting harder and harder to use. Thank goodness my husband broke my upright the other day, hence why I’m here! Thank you so so so very much for having made this video!
Thanks for providing that with us. Such a great analysis.
I appreciate the information. I have only ever used upright vacuums but will look at canister vacuums the next time.
Your content is so in depth and practical. I’ve watched dozens of reviews and no one does it like you
Thank you
Thank you for the clarification. I am attempting to decided between a Sebo Airbelt D4 versus a Sebo Felix. This video has been extremely helpful! Thanks again.
1200 square foot if laminate flooring and my canister vacuum is so much better than the upright I used to have. I vacuum the entire house daily, high traffic areas more like twice a day.
Just bought a Miele C3 Marin and never owned a canister before. So I do have to get used to using it but I love my new Miele so quite and grooms the carpet really nice!
Are you still happy with your Marin? Thinking about trying one. Would be my first canister.
@@brynnpenney3658I know this comment is old, but I went to a canister because of the air filtration. My ex had a shepherd mix and whenever she would vacuum (cheap bagless) the air filters in the house would kick on and the house would get so dusty afterward. I had no idea what was going on. I ended up on this channel and went out like 3 days later and spent what I considered to be a completely unconscionable amount of money on a Miele C3 Home care. I would do it again in a heartbeat. My house has never been so clean and the dust problem resolved itself. Big dog is gone - but the vacuum stayed! I love the canister but would go with a Sebo next time. I haven't had any issues with it, to me the Sebos just seem lower cost maintenance and consumable parts like bags filters etc, although with those giant packs from Miele the bag/filter replacement cost is like $125 every 16 months.
I’ve always preferred canisters and you can’t give a house a ceiling to floor/corner to corner cleaning without a canister but uprights are great for fast cleanups on rugs.
I couldn't agree with you more! It's hard to clean a house floor to ceiling without a canister. Uprights are more quick pick up oriented.
I’m thinking about getting a canister for the house and taking my upright to the office.
I always used upright vacuums but, I fell in love with canisters when I tried a Miele C1 electro plus at NFM. I really like the Miele C1 but, do not mind splurging on a Sebo Aitbelt E3 or a Miele C3 Homecare plus with SEB 236.
The Central Vacuum System nod at the end was the hardest Low Key Flex of all time. 😂
I'm in the market for a new vacuum cleaner, and I appreciate the insights you provide.
Very informative. I've been obsessed with vacuums for over 30 years lol. But I always had uprights. I became concerned with how a vacuum affects indoor air quality after having an in-house demo of the Rainbow in early 90's. Too expensive then and now so I back then, I jumped on the cyclonic bagless upright bandwagon. I just got my first ever canister vacuum 2 weeks ago. So much more versatility!! So many more features!! So much easier to use!! Because of my air quality and air purification concerns, I opted for a water filtration canister vacuum. Not the $4K Rainbow but the Sirena. Love it and love canisters now.
Thank you SO much for an amazing video! Great info and touched on all my questions.
This was So helpful. I had no idea!
WOW! I'm unhappy with my used Eureka upright. It's heavy and klunky, though it does an OK job. Per your comparison, I'd like to go back to a bagged vacuum.
I was all set to buy a mid-range Oreck 'til I saw this video. I think the Miele or Sebo cans are more money, but not enough to keep me awake nights. I mostly have hard floors, but usually sweep them manually. Now, I'm thinking "Why not use a vacuum?"
Gonna look at the prices, models, and sources and pick up something after the holidays. My local vacuum sales/repair place is under new ownership and sells Sebo. The old owner was a bit slippery,* but I'll at least talk to the new gal.
(* The kind of guy you have to ask just the right question in just the right way or you'll be misled without actually being lied to. )
Thanks for your scientific approach. It's the way I think things through.
First I love the look and sound of those old Hoovers and I agree with all that you’re saying here. One thing for me is I hate pulling and dragging a vacuum around behind me. Knocking into things and so on. I feel you need both a upright and a canister for a home cleaning day. I normally use the central vac and rotate through my upright vacuums just for some fun.
na just an upright with a decent hose...
@@Dankcatvacs That’s what she said. Lol 😂
The best response yet.
I agree, you need both an upright and a canister. For me I have mostly wall-to-wall carpet and I find an upright works best for me. I use a canister for stairs, dusting, walls and high places. I would say if you have a combination of hard floors and area rugs a canister would be best. Having both though you get the best of both worlds!
I have a Panasonic bagless upright. Great suction when new (It's turning 8yrs old in 2022), but it clogs quickly. Small pebbles that get stuck in sneakers, cat litter just doesn't make it up the hose and into that sharp turn to fall down into the canister. I have to take it apart to clean out the lint buildup. Going to get a bagged canister vacuum.
I had the same problem with my Electrolux Commercial canister vacuum. I still have it, it's fairly old and runs fine but I just don't like it. I much prefer the Dyson ball I have, which can dust and do under beds, with it's detachable hose. I know people on vacuum review channels tend not to like Dysons, but mine has been great and is nicer to use than other vacuums I have used except Roombas. I haven't use a Miele though. It seems nice. Both my machines are pretty old but still clean well. The Electrolux does clog easily though, especially with cat litter or by my woodstove.
I've never had a canister, but I'm ready to go find the best canister Miele for my flooring situation. Thank you!
The Sebo Felix is nice because it is an upright, but you can carry to do the stairs or furniture.
Great comparison. I have a Miele C3 with power head and a Lindhaus Valzer. I want to install an Aqua Air wet/dry central vacuum. I’d rather carry around a 35’ hose than deal with electrical cords.
I been thinking about getting a canister as seen they are better than the older ones these days. Plus canisters seem to get under furniture better than the upright ones and other hard to reach places.
I have loved vacuum cleaners since childhood. I love both, but I lean more towards an upright for my needs. When I was growing up, we had carpet and I got used to using uprights (Kirbys, Hoover Convertibles, Eureka F&G, etc.). I have mostly hard flooring, but I have large area rugs in just about every room. I wouldn't mind a good quality canister, but I have two Kirbys with attachments, a Royal all-metal upright, two Shop Vacs and a Dirt Devil hand vac.
Honestly I’d just use the Kirby as a canister. Why buy a canister and an upright when you have one that is both! Although converting the Kirby every time you vacuum is a pain. That’s why my rainbows get more use.
@@NureinFeigling That is what I do. I just said I wouldn't mind having a good quality canister, also. I would say once a week, or once every other week, I use my Kirby Diamond in attachment mode for the floors or areas I can't get to with my uprights. Most of the time, I use either my vintage Kirby or Diamond in upright mode for all flooring surfaces. If I think it might scatter debris, I just turn the roller brush off by rotating the belt lifter to the 'off' position.
@@mattjones7621 yeah. I have the optional floor plate attachment for bare floors so I can safely use my Kirby in upright mode on bare floors. I still prefer it as a canister though because i do like to clean under everything lol
@@NureinFeigling I have the same tool and, yeah, it comes in handy sometimes. I agree about using it as a canister, because it is easier to get into tight spaces and vacuum hard flooring with it. I have a model 519 that I have modified that I use most of the time for my rugs and floors. I use the Diamond once or twice a week for hose work and rug cleaning. What model of Kirby do you have?
@@mattjones7621 I would kill for an older 500 series Kirby! I have a Kirby sentria 2 with all of its attachments and the shampooer. I got it for $15 lol. It just needed a belt. I did an OK job of polishing but it’s still not great. I also have a heritage 2 that needs a cord and a g5 for parts.
For me the decision was easy, since I have mostly wooden floors with area rugs and most of my furniture is elevated on legs, except my shoe box that goes to the floor. With an upright I'd be sweeping out from the back of most of my dressers and such. Not sure of the newer uprights but back in my day the hose too short and didn't allow me to reach the head valance on my vertical blinds. So for me it will always be a canister. I live in a building and they use a Hoover upright to run the length of our wall to wall carpeted hallways. For that use, the upright is perfect. Thanks for the video. I actually like Hoover, my mom's favorite, and probably would have been a loyal customer, however they don't make a canister on wheels. My gym uses a backpack style vacuum and I thought it might be good for a home.... that is until he turned to get under one of the machines the backpack canister hit the machine next to it. I imaged me wiping out all the pictures I have on top of our bureau so that decision left my mind completely.
My first vacuums were uprights. After using a canister, there is no going back. For high dusting and stairs, they are far superior. With modern power nozzles they clean carpets just as well.
Thank you. I have only owned uprights; but, will now, seriously consider a canister. This video provided excellent education on the advantages of a canister.
They are so much better, they are lighter and more manoeuvrable to use, in mainland Europe, upright hoovers aren't really a thing and cylinder vacuums dominate. I've never understood why more hoovers in the UK and US are upright when they just seem way more cumbersome and impractical
This is an outstanding well thought out review! The pros and cons are well presented. I am most likely to buy a canister in the near future. Well done! Thank you very much!!
Helpful, thorough review. Noted reference to Consumer Reports, which said that uprights clean carpets better because their design puts more weight on the brush roller, thus providing better cleaning. Not sure about that as the better vac manufacturers have remarked brush needs airflow at its housing to get dirt out of rug. Still, CU tests show Miele uprights outperforming Miele canisters on carpet.
Miele canisters have about 30% more airflow with the exact same nozzle design. The canisters have always cleaned better than they're uprights that's just a fact. I would tell you to go test drive the two side by side but the upright's been discontinued for over a year now.
Upright I just can't jam with a bulky canister. As much as give them trys. It like driving a Sami truck in a mini Mart parking lot
Also Miele is the heaviest bulkiest upright ever made.
can't believe the miele canister has so much more power
I still like them have bunch in my collection but more hastle to use in close quarters.
Thank you for this video and so many others. I appreciate what your teaching with your channel. Your content is great. 😁🤙
I liked this video. I have a red U1 . I don’t know if they still make it . I have a Sebo D4.it’s great . I’m a big Sebo fan. I am not that good working on the Meiles but the Sebo r so ez. My U1 goes easily from hard floors to carpet which is a big reason I bought it ,also nice attachments. Your video kind of reminded me of y I have the vacuums I have . 👍. Great video again.
Thanks for watching !
Im really not a fan of canister vacuums although ive never used one I dont want to drag or lug a canister around. I saw your everything is wrong with shark vacuum and I couldn't agree more. I have started using my vacuum cleaner ALOT starting about a year ago and I actually have a couple now but unfortunately I have learned the hard way that dysons and sharks tend to ruin my carpet and are hard to push so I ended up with a sonic clean 7000 series but it looks dated and I would like something newer. Have also learned recently that bagged vacuums are better.
Can you recommend me something better than the sonic clean 7000 series or at least newer? Or can you sell me on a canister vacuum lol. I like how some of the models you have look sleek and modern its just overwhelming. So from a neutral standpoint could you suggest some bagged uprights that fit my criteria and you can try and sell me on the canister vacuum?
Thanks!
I think a canister vacuum would be good for vacuuming cobwebs and other above-the-floor cleaning.
Here in the U.K , what you call canister we call cylinder. Upright, we also say upright.
Personally, I prefer an upright, my wife prefers a cylinder (canister)vacuum cleaner.
great video. thanks
Between Miele and Sebo, which is the more durable and reliable unit? I've read that the quality of Miele has been dropping but nothing to really back that up.
I'd say Miele's quality has been steady. Not sure what nonsense you may have read? But sebo is a commercial machine it's meant to be used in abused.
@@PerformanceReviews Just some posts on reddit and vacuumland. Looks like I might go with the D4 because there are some clumsy people in the house so we need the durability. Thanks!
@@sl1237 You heard right. Most Miele vacums sold here are the inferior modes alll made in China., ,,,but the price!
Great video! What about bagless canisters? Are they less powerful in terms of suction than a bagged canister vacuum?
The utter failure of American vacuum advertising is staggering. Everyone, including people with strength issues, I know has a heavy upright. Drives me crazy.
I completely agree!
My home is quite tight corners so a cannister lugging around is a pain in the arse, also not as easy to store
My home is quite tight corners so a cannister lugging around is a pain in the arse, also not as easy to store
Canisters are way easier to operate in a tighter space. There's a reason that only Europe and Asia buy canister vacuums
A Miele isn't
No rolling or getting stuck. It's all in the wheels.@@reviewassistant6891
Thanks so much! ❤
Great information, thank you for that. Now... what "brands" or "models" are worthy of consideration in your opinion? My old vacuum needs replacing. :/
Thanks for watching.
Here's a video of recommended machines.

Do Sebo canisters do just as well or close enough to the Riccar’s Tandem Air on high pile dense carpet?
Definitely canisters, and corded. I need powerful suction to get into corners and crannies, under furniture, and all those difficult places.
Thanx on suction info
okay you sold me on a canister, which one costs like $300 and is decent?
I dont know about 300 and decent but we have a sale at the moment at a location in San Diego where you can get a Miele Classic C1 Pure Suction for $279.99 instead of the usual $349.99. So worth it and easily the best vacuum I ever purchased.
@@upy0ur5 oh sweet! How well is it for high pile carpet in a standard american home? Or are you using it predominantly on hard floors?
I bought the NaceCare JVP180 James for a friends wedding gift and it's very nice. They love it and I've tested it a few times at their house. All hard floors though. It's very quiet, no hearing protection needed. And suction is huge.
@Spud177ify The only one I can recommend for high pile carpet is the Complete C3 since they have an electrical function at the end of the telescopic wand for powered attachments which the C1 and C2 models lack. My home is all wood and tiles at the moment. When I lived in a carpet home, we had an upright vacuum but its not Miele or Sebo quality. You bought a Nacecare JVP180? The other name for it is a Henry vacuum right? Those things have amazing suction but not great for carpets from my experience.
Unfortunately all Miele C3 series sold in some markets like ours aren't even compatible with powerheads due to lack of powered hose/wand and only comes with turbo heads in top expensive models. Therefore making crap like Sharks and Dyson's way more attractive in features and price without even having to try hard.
That is always unfortunate when the market limits what's available to that region even if products exist it's hard to come by in that specific area just like phones some markets don't have good variety we're stuck with one brand even if we don't want it
And if you're in Aus like me you will find Miele customer support horrid to put it mildly. Call Sebo. They have great customer support. Answer phone straight away and give you much help and advise.
Miele cx1 is my favorite other than my MD Central vacuum
I would happier with a canister type if the protective buffer would protect the wall as well as the machine.
The Miele C3 has a bumper. But if you're really looking for that extra level protection take a look at the SEBO E3 airbelt
Sebo D4 is for people that appreciate the art of the vaccuum.
So suction wise the miele canister has a lot more than the upright? I have a dog and 3 cats withixture of carpet and vinyl floor. I need one that can keep up. 😆
Should be more then abale next step up is a central vacuum
Until seeing this video I was undecided on buying a canister vacuum, not anymore.
Thank you 😊
I have a question that I hope you can answer.
Will a canister vacuum floor brush with (fake) horse hair soft bristles, also Clean area rugs?
Or do I need one without (fake) horse hair?
Generally you want a turbo tool for area rugs. Some of them come with a switchable floor tool.
@@PerformanceReviewsMy area rugs say no beater bar. Is a turbo tool basically the same?
@@5rgyyuyrgg a turbo tool is an air driven mini powerhead, so it does rapidly agitate like a regular powerhead. It's best used to remove pet hair from furniture, stairs and beds. If I were you, I'd follow the area rug recommendation and use a straight suction tool without agitation
So this is why I hate my upright vacuum with the white hot passion of 1000 burning suns. THANK YOU!
I'd say a canister would have better vacuum because the air, with particle contamination, only goes thru one 90 degree angle while an upright goes three 90 degree angles, one is the gooseneck in the floor tool and a U turn (two 90 degree angles) before the bag/bin. Otherwise they have their pros/cons. Electrolux, in my experience, has always pushed the canister to the consumer. I've always respected the wisdom of Electrolux.
You sound like Savagegeese Mark, Great video!
Well thank you for the compliment. I've spent time in the same part of Illinois as Mark.
Nice vid.
Hi sir, the canister vacuum in this video is this the best this company has to offer in your professional opinion?
You want to buy the vacuum based off your house and needs.
Here is a video on the differences.

Do you have any videos on your channel regarding rainbow home cleaning systems I've been in the market and I want one but at the same time I don't know that much about them but I hear those that have them they say they love them but electricity and water doesn't mix with me so I'm asking you don't find uprights in your local Walmart now that uses bags anymore most of all of them now or Bagless meaning you have that great deathstorm when you empty them got two costly wash filters and do all that so I always wanted a Rainbow Vacuum ever since I was a small child cuz I was born 1987 here in Cincinnati Ohio always wanted one because my aunt Norma Bryant she has a rainbow that's over 70 years old and that thing still runs like it was she just got it yesterday and I love how the water traps all of the dirt in the debris but I don't know how they make them now cuz I think they got filters on them now so I just wanted to know is that a goodbye or not looking towards up to the vacuum expert thank you be blessed have a blessed and prosperous New Year
He has made videos and left his opinions about them on Reddit. The general consensus on rainbow is that they do a decent job cleaning, but not any better than a sebo or miele. And dealing with the water filter is a pain. Basically they’re overpriced and hard to maintain.
I agree that personally, water filtration vacuums are great for power, suction and air purification abilities. I also got very interested in Rainbow in the early 90's but the cost was and still is insane. Now about $4,000 😱 So I finally got a water filtration vacuum YAY! 2 weeks ago but got the Sirena which is wayyyyy less $$$ than Rainbow! Like the cost was only 1/5th the cost of a Rainbow with all of the same functions and features. I really love it!
Canister is the best
Central Vacuum is the best 😉
I just watched this video.
Can you please recommend some inexpensive great vacuum that can be use for both area rugs and hard wood floors that's very easily scratch.

What do you think of the miele Blizzard C1 cat & dog baggles power line vacuum SKCEO? I was also thinking about a SEB 236 power head for the lights.I have 80% bare floors & 20% plush carpet. I have 2 dogs & one dog sheds a LOT. Do you have a video with this model I like your video's especially the demonstrations with actual debris on the floor. I vacuum every single day. HELP
If you vacuum that often you will want to stay away from Bagless vacuum cleaners. It'll cost you a fortune to run with those filters. The bagged system of the Miele C3 it's far more economical.
What do you think of Prolux?
I won't
Great video bagged vacuum cleaners are more healthy for your health than bagles vacuum cleaners
My parents 25+ year old Kenmore canister had all of these same features as the Miele, so it's not even modern ones that have those features.
Thank you, I always wondered which one is best. But why do Americans still insist on using upright vacumes?
Because they are better.
@@Laotzu.Goldbug for what? Try to get as high, or as low. With an upright you give up tons of maneuverability, and in application you’re able to clean less because you simply can’t reach it. Also on a canister you don’t have support the whole weight of the vacuum. Clown
@@laxus8172 the canister has ruined all of my furniture because of the way it bangs around as I'm vacuuming.

I used canister and upright and they both are fun to use and all vacuums are easy to use for me but I don't care for how easy a vacuum is to use because vacuuming don't feel like just work to me like how central vacs would be that they are installed into the house that everything about them is so simple and easy that its boring like no sound and no feeling of it being in your hand or next to you like a canister would be

I've lost respect for Consumer Reports. They also give Shark high ratings.
So did Wirecutter at the New York Times as well as many other “trustworthy” sources.
Makes you wonder, doesn’t it.

Canister😊
I prefer uprights especially with ones that have lift away.
Bruh that’s just a canister lmao.

Canisters were designed by a sadistic ingrate who hated his mother. That is all. (Never met one I liked, melie included, ankle biting wastes of space.)
It sounds like a "skill issue" to me. 🤣
There are NO advantages to an upright vacuum
💯
If you were trained to vacuum yourself out of a room so as to not leave footprints, a canister vacuum probably isn't the right choice.
Good point. Kicking it back behind you as you work your way out of a room could tend to be a bit awkward.
