I've owned this gun since 1998, shot thousands of rounds thru it. No failures...ever. The pinnacle of 40 cal. A bit on the pricey side but worth it. For those who know...
I own one since 1996... trusted and reliable.. never a missfire, stupendous performance , excellent build quality always attracts attention at the range... what a gun! Thank you guys at H&K.. Much appreciated!
You have helped making my decision on which pistol to get so much easier. When dealing with 700-1000 dollars, I wanted to make sure I got the right gun for me. You have helped tremendously with these videos. Thank you!
I might get a USP in 9mm because I like the idea of having an overbuilt gun chambered in a caliber that’s going to have a difficult time wearing it out.
@@a1phamalestud No 9mm +p+ has about 42,000psi while 40 S&W has only 35,000psi. The Bundeswehr German army shot their USP in 9mm for years with very hot overpressure loads that where designed for the HK MP5. It leads to slide cracks. After that they switched to normal NATO loads which is like strong +p. I have never heard of a USP 40S&W with such problems.
My son recently purchased a used H&K USP 45 in very good condition at Calabras in Ft. Mill, SC for $500 and change. He hasn't fired it yet, but I know he'll love it.
I have a .45 with the stainless slide. I’ve owned mine since 1998 and will never get rid of this gun. It’s the best shooting gun I’ve owned. Great review!
I just traded a Sig P229 for one of these, both in .40, and couldn't be happier. The USP 40 feels like it's all business, made for duty. It lends a sense of confidence that few other pistols are able to. Built for combat. Thanks sootch. Another outstanding review!
On my personal experience,Among 40 S&W,H.K USP 40 is best! Sig and Glock couldn't follow Two Shot in Single Hole at 7 yard.(Around Penny Size.) After this,I was disappointed of others.-After this H.K became my first choice. It is handy, durable, laborship, design, weight with Variant 3 Version.-I didn't need any hesitation of H.K.
They changed the recoil assembly. They make a dual captive spring setup so you don't have to mess around with it. You may want to look into it. Nice to see you are finally getting on the USP band wagon. I love my USP 45. They are amazing guns. They run hard, and run forever.
Nice Sootch! My USP 40 is a 95 model and I am the original owner. It is still my favorite pistol and still has NEVER failed. I swear not a single failure in 17 years! So glad you got one. I know you have been after one.
Nice review; always appreciate the accuracy and quality of the information you provide. The H&K USP 45 one of the most accurate, comfortable, fun and overall best 45s I have ever owned. I do wish they had compatible mags (like Glock) between different sizes of guns in the same caliber. FYI, a company GG&G, Inc makes a rail converting the proprietary rail to a standard pictinny so you will be able to use accessories like a Glock flashlight and laser attachment (highly recommended). Good luck.

SOOTCH! you did a video of the HK USP!!! Woo i'm still drooling over your charter arms 44 special video! Looks like i'll be drooling over this for a while too! Gorgeous firearm!
Excellent video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I especially liked the fact that you mentioned why lead ammo should not be used with polygonal barrels. I never knew that.
A couple of things to note: >-It was designed to fire +P rounds. It still excels at this. likewise, the Mark23 was designed to fire a special 180gr +P round, which is why the 1911 wasn't suited for the task. 1911's would just blow apart after a very short time of firing such rounds. >-Unlike any other pistol any other manufactured at the time of its trials, the USP faced an occlusion test, where not only was one bullet lodged in the barrel, but TWO bullets were lodged in the barrel, then a third fired from normal round, dislodging both blockages, and discharging all three projectiles without incident. Afterward, the barrel was checked with x-rays and microscopes for any damage or flaws that might have occurred as a result of such a test, and none were found. The same barrel suffered no loss in accuracy and was then tested with another several thousand rounds without any reduction in performance of any kind. No other pistol, not even the Mark23 faced that test, to my knowledge. The USP, when loaded with Corbon 135gr JHP rounds is arguably one of the most effective and formidable pistols ever created. An interesting characteristic of the variant 1, and it left-handed counterpart, the trigger when in double action it a long, smooth pull with no stop just a sudden break. However, in single action mode, it acts kind of like a 2-stage where the initial travel is of mild resistance, which then stops at a positive break point, giving the user a very clear and crisp break. Personally, I prefer a lighter pull than stock, so I pulled the hammer spring out, and cut about 1.5-1.75 coils off of it then placed it back in the handle, significantly reducing the trigger weight, without compromising and of the striking ability. Makes it that much nicer to use.
I fired this same model and caliber very first time 15 years ago.I remember reading in firearm magazines during the decade of the 1990s,the .40 S&W is snappy, but it can be controllable.
Sootch, that was a great review! I've been planning on purchasing one of these for a while now and was hoping that someone would come out with a decent review before my purchase...which you did. Now I just gotta save up a little more as they are around $1,100 here in Canada! Thanks very much for the review!
Have a usp40 compact. Shoots like a dream it recoils so much smoother than a Glock. Feels like a lot of other guns shooting 9mm nato. Very smooth for a 40
I am a huge proponent of H&K firearms. I carry a P2000sk in 9mm everyday, and currently own two other H&K pistols. I can't recommend them enough, extremely fun to shoot and accurate as hell. I want to add that there are H&K model pistols that support a full range of picatinny accessories.
Great video and narration on this pistol! You did a great job! I recently bought this very pistol and I do like "QUALITY!" I have fired 350 rounds so far and I do enjoy the quality of this pistol. There is something about having a "top notch pistol." Yes, it was pricey ($875) (with two 10 rnd. mags. Calif) I took it apart and cleaned it...break-down and re-assembly is easy. I'm selling my Sig 2022 to justify buying this great pistol. My other .40 pistol is a Beretta PX4 Storm. Another great pistol! I am willing to pay for "quality."
After wanting one of these all my life, I got a 94' 9mm full size V3 and found something funny. The size! It's closer to a compact glock in size than a full size glock. To me, it's all around perfect. But I've also owned about everything out there now, and this was what I arrived at as being perfect for me.
I own two P2000s, one in 9mm and one in 40SW, and an HK45c (which was adopted by SOCOM relatively recently). Out of all my guns only my HKs have never had a malfunction. I won't argue that they're the best guns for everyone, but they are for me :).
I got the Compact .40 for $500. It feels great and really tames the recoil of .40 caliber. I also added a Streamlight TLR-7 and Tru Dot night sights. This is my perfect nightstand gun.
These pistols are amazing. I was given a USP 45 compact... I know, lucky me. I was very surprised by the lower recoil. It was comparable to a XD 40 compact my buddy has. Mine has metallic mags and a captured recoil spring. Big 1911 fan as well. I think it's cool how the controls are set up like 1911 controls. Well I've rambled enough. Thanks for the video
Great video as usual.recently got a usp 45 tactical in a trade.I love it so much ,just had to put a usp 9mm compact on layaway.I have lots of great guns,im surprised ive never got a HK until now.thanks again for video.shoot on!
Best pistol I've ever owned. I carry the P2000 V2 LEM but the USP .40 is the best pistol I've ever operated with out of 23-ish pistols, and 7 in combative encounters.
I got my USP .45 Compact in 2001. It's my home defense firearm. My only issues with it is: (1) it will give you a failure to eject if you use cheap ammo; and (2) if you tilt the pistol at an angle when you insert the magazine, and use anything more than slight force, the slide will close, loading the pistol. I contacted USP about it and also asked for a replacement manual---they never bothered to respond. If you don't use cheap ammo, it's a great pistol.
I own this fine pistol and recently shot it side by side with my Beretta PX4Storm .40 . Both guns are very impressive. I love them both...you have to pay for quality!
Also, info about dry firing the USP SPECIFICALLY!!! The early model guns are NOT dry fire safe. The firing pin is fairly weak where the firing pin block safety engages the firing pin. It will eventually snap the firing pin. You can update your USP a new firing pin block, firing pin block spring, and firing pin. It will then be dry fire safe! Of course, you can just use snap caps if you'd rather. Do not mess with the trigger on these guns, buy the match trigger kit, it's easy to install.
I bought a used .40 S&W Compact. Then I had to have the .45 Compact. Then I bought two full size .40S&W. I have my eye on one in 9mm and .45. I love the way they shoot. I haven’t even looked at my Glocks since.
This gun being designed in 40 Cal can be shot all day long, its a great shooter and such a hi tech gun with the recoil system and the lightweight mags. Double to single action is actually prefered by a lot of more expierienced shooters. I've been shooting for 15 years now and have switched to double to single action guns. It's actually better then a striker or single action only, double action on the first shot is better then having to hit a safty and single action for over 90% of your shots is better then a stryker for 100% of your shots. The first double action shot isnt bad, its actually nice while you line up your sights and then single action feels like the gun can do no wrong. Get out and shoot and this will make more sense but maybe not if your new and havnt shot revolvers and other guns.
I totally agree with everything this presenter said. A wonderful firearm. I've put over 10,000 rounds thru mine without a single FTF. I did have to replace the spring because it was ejecting brass about 20 feet downstream and going down other shooter's shirts. Ooops!!
USPc 40 & P7m13are my edcs. The no- lead guideline is really specific to the P7, so as to not jack up the gas system. I only shoot jacketed ammo as a rule to make cleaning up easier. Thanks for the video.
Well............you have done it AGAIN! I keep buying this guns that you review (Galesi ,25 and ,32, Beretta 92S (bought before your review!) and a Beretta 1951! This HK is next on the "want" list!!!
I'm babysitting an H&K USP 45 for a buddy while he's out of the country for a year. MAN, I love that gun... just wish I had more time to get out and shoot it.
My brother who was in Iraq loved his USP. Being in supply and all he coud get one. When he was forced to get the 9mm because he could not get the 40 do to shortages. He liked the power behind it and the fact it took less shots to put a target down. But when he used the 9mm he instantly hated it. Mainly because it was a weaker bullet than the 40 My dad also was a career military and had a 1911. When he was forced to swap to the 9mm he too hated that pistol. But he had serious malfuntions with his
If you're looking to get your own, you could just get a single/double action variant. Variants 5, 6, and 7 are DAO. The first variation (in this vid) is probably what you're looking for. Variant 2 features left handed safety with all the features the USP in this vid has. Keep in mind the law enforcement variant is basically a variant 7 with an improved mechanism and as such is also DAO.
i'm looking at one of these, i've got the chance to pick one up for around $550, perfectly functional its one of the ban era guns so it only comes with 2 10 round mags but for the price i cant argue.

Well worth it forget the price this is a pistol you can trust!
KE date code guns are from 1994, they are the first gen of the USPs. You're talking about a later model USP compact. The guide rod set up in these older guns is a far heavier duty setup. The nylon buffer was an after thought in making the USP compact, the captured large spring loaded buffer is a far superior performer. These guns have standard rifling as well, so they're lead bullet safe. His gun is not modified in any way. Downside of 1st gens is that dry fire can snap the firing pin.
If 40 cal is your choice this is your pistol. I never get tired of hearing the angels sing when mine slides out of the holster. And if you want to be shocked at how easy 100 yard shots can be with the pistol put some Dawson Precision sights on it.
I had one of those for many years, even carried it as a work/duty gun for a short time, had zero problems... however I have switched to glock becouse the glock is simpler, more rounds, just as reliable, lighter, and cheaper( 2 glocks for 1 USP) easer to get parts and accessories
This is the first and only handgun I ever purchased back in 1995. I have my Dad's Colt 1911 .45 ACP National Match Mark IV. I love them both but shoot my USP more.
I Got a USP40 brand new last year, love it, only issue I found is kydex holsters will wear the finish off anything, Glocks and USP, no big deal just passing the info around if you want your Badass pistol to stay Pretty, no kydex.
I bought 2 USP 45's when they first came out, now I had one sent out to be chromed, custom night sights in place of factory night sights, ported barrel and slide, and stippled frame....hell, why not have one stock and one Ghettofabulous LOL
sootch the last shot was great, next time see if you cant get the sights and target to reflect into your glasses would make for a very nice shot :) also get your hands on and shoot the hk45, i think you will love it ;)
When we got these, we didn't like them: they jammed a lot, and they were hard to clean. Many of us preferred the Beretta (9mm), because it was ergonomically easier to handle, less kick, easier to clean and maintain, and interchangeability was better. Today, we're partial to the S&W, because it's sweet, simple, crisp. As for excelling in military trials, I don't know where you got your info, but again, first hand, we hated this weapon: it wasn't as reliable as you claim or they claim.

I'm so glad you made that comment, it makes me want a USP so much more now.
Ooops!!
best .40 on earth, puts my p226 to shame
Bought the .45 model about the same year and will add.. it's about the smoothest shooting pistol I've shot.
USPc 40 & P7m13are my edcs. The no- lead guideline is really specific to the P7, so as to not jack up the gas system. I only shoot jacketed ammo as a rule to make cleaning up easier. Thanks for the video.
I always enjoy your reviews. Thanks.
Well............you have done it AGAIN! I keep buying this guns that you review (Galesi ,25 and ,32, Beretta 92S (bought before your review!) and a Beretta 1951! This HK is next on the "want" list!!!
Wow, all the features are so buttery.
Just got a USP 45 Tactical and a USP 45 Compact with an LEM light trigger. I'm in love, if only the darn mags were more reasonably priced.
Great video. Clear, crisp, clean, well informative, very well spoken and to the point. also great gun!
But he had serious malfuntions with his
I own two USPs, the usp45c in lem & the usp45t in v1. Tough as nails badass guns.
Hey you got one!! great pistol. I've personally had one through muck, dust, and water ... it just ran like a champ. Accuracy is amazing.
i'm looking at one of these, i've got the chance to pick one up for around $550, perfectly functional its one of the ban era guns so it only comes with 2 10 round mags but for the price i cant argue.
550 is an awesome price. i picked mine up for 625 with two ten rounds. ive bought the 12 rounds since.
I had one in .40 and I hated it mainly bc I hate the snap of that round but I bought another in .45 acp and I loved that gun. Really regret selling it
Hey Man, great video. I own 3 h&k's, two P30's and a P2000. Unbelievable pistols. Now you have twisted my arm. Think I have to get a new H&K 45. Oh well, it's only money.
I agree completely, it's a fantastic aid in learning to shoot well. And if there is a concern, a snap cap is the solution. (great video by the way)
They are amazingly accurate. From 10 yds you can trace the perf lines on an IDPA target.
I absolutely love my usp. a lil pricey, but I like the fit in my hand better than other pistols on the market.
Love this pistol! I shot well over 3000 rounds through mine and had one failure due to bad ammo.
Great vid! I am a huge Hk fan! i have the USP in .45 acp hands down one of the finest pistols I have ever fired!!! I also have a P2000 also very nice and my every day cary is a P2000sk in .40 I would trust my life to HK any day! anyone who thinks of buying one should just stop!
Downside of 1st gens is that dry fire can snap the firing pin.
always great reviews sootch thanks!
If 40 cal is your choice this is your pistol. I never get tired of hearing the angels sing when mine slides out of the holster. And if you want to be shocked at how easy 100 yard shots can be with the pistol put some Dawson Precision sights on it.
2 things, the very 1st .40 S&W caliber and 1st HK handgun I fired was this USP pistol model back in mid 2001 at a range.
Same here! First 40S&W and H&K I have ever shot! 👍
I bought 2 USP 45's when they first came out, now I had one sent out to be chromed, custom night sights in place of factory night sights, ported barrel and slide, and stippled frame....hell, why not have one stock and one Ghettofabulous LOL
sootch the last shot was great, next time see if you cant get the sights and target to reflect into your glasses would make for a very nice shot :) also get your hands on and shoot the hk45, i think you will love it ;)
I’ve always wanted one. Just like Solid Snake had. With the Surefire light attachment. High speed
Picking mine up today can't wait
first pistol i ever bought. still my favorite and i have a glock and some sigs.
