    I couldn't agree more that this is far and away the Turtles' best song; a masterpiece among nuggets of gold. Its soaring harmonies and fabulous chord structures remind me so much of a certain Beach Boys' song that likewise never got a tenth of the credit it deserved: Heroes and Villains. And had I not seen the earlier comments in this thread, I would have thought it inconceivable that The Turtles are not yet in the R&R Hall of Fame. What a profound injustice!

      @@brittoverbaugh4035 Good God - look at the groups and singers in there now that have no association with rock music! Growing up in the late 60's, the Turtles influence was large and they were featured on TV shows all the time. Their brand of good-time rock and roll and great vocals by the lead singer stand the test of time.

    This was on the radio driving (west or east, can't remember) cross-country 1967. To my young ear is was plaintive, the extreme melancholy of Loss. What did I know? It was 20+ years before I heard it again. It still has that leap into the abyss--"We went for a ride..."

    I was born in 1960. I remember hearing all the songs from that era on the radio, such good music. I still like songs from the 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, and today, but I think the 60's are the best. The 50's sound wasn't even similar to what you heard in the mid to late 60's (and I like 50's music too)...but the mid to late 60's was such a creative time, and such a unique sound. I think the creativity of the Beatles (having the freedom to experiment in the studio and not tour, and the input of George Martin) helped push the other bands to strive for more. A great time in music. :D

    Once I understood that “Happy Together” was the ravings of a stalker about the object of his unrequited lust, this song demanded a second look. It’s not too much of a stretch to imagine this as the lunatic musings of a kidnap/murder suspect giving his statement to the police. Same guy, but a bit further along the “Happy Together” story timeline. Crazy, I know, but why wouldn’t it be?

  • @wolf1728
    @wolf1728 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I know a lot of folks felt that this was a "drug song" but I've always felt it was MUCH more a song about love and sex. I was in my teens in the 1960's and sex and drugs seriously predominated that decade.
    But if you think about the words and the video, (to me) it seems it's definitely sexually-oriented.
    The lovely lass dancing around does NOT symbolize drug use (to me anyway).
    And the words .... "went for a ride" ... I always thought that was a sexual reference.
    "There's a little bit of heaven underneath the apple tree." The thought of a boy and a girl in a forest, underneath a tree is DEFINITELY referencing LOVE!!!
    How many of you have ever thought "Gee if only I could take my girl into the forest, go underneath a tree .. and THEN smoke some grass"???????

      The song was played from late 1967 to early 1968 - it was the sixties - EVERYTHING had a reference to drugs!!! "Morning morning glory", "went for a ride", "gettin' so high". I lived through that era and I didn't do drugs. Actually, I think references to drugs, psychedelia, psychedelic movies (2001), transcendental meditation, Timothy Leary, etc. was much, MUCH greater than the actual drug-taking experience itself. Still, it was a wild time and I'm glad I lived through it!!!

    This damned cancel culture is now changing the lyrics to this great tune. The original lyric was
    I saw a girl with a bullet in her eye and she's so outta sight.
    Not a boy in her eye!

      I just listened to this, and I believe Kaylan is singing "boy," where he elongates the words into two syllables.
