    Hi Marie, I absolutely love your book. Do you have any tips to make this a pressed powder?

  • @justemzbemz
    @justemzbemz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Have you tried making pressed cosmetics? Pressed blushes, highlights, eyeshadows, etc

    • @selenalamothe8681
      @selenalamothe8681 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Emma Rose I'd like to know as well, especially for the eyeshadows because i have no idea what natural powders are safe near eyes

      Selena-I'm confused as to what pressed cosmetics have to do with safety? Pressed cosmetics are still made with all the same powders, with some additional ones to make the pressing possible. For safety information, check with your suppliers to see what is approved for use around eyes.

      Humblebee & Me Oh, I just mean I don't know if every powder is okay to use for eyeshadow. Like, I'm cool with using activated charcoal for black shadow, but will it blind me? Those are the things I want to know. Sorry if I wasn't clear, haha :)

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ah! Activated charcoal is not an approved colourant, don't use it around your eyes-use black iron oxide instead. The FDA has a full chart of approved cosmetic colourants (and the areas they are approved for use on) here: www.fda.gov/ForIndustry/ColorAdditives/ColorAdditiveInventories/ucm115641.htm#table1A. The FDA doesn't really seem to care about most other things as long as they aren't chloroform-they basically just say "don't make stuff that hurts people". Avoid ingredients with high pH around the eyes (like bentonite clay) and anything with larger particle sizes that can scratch your eyes. Make sure you are purchasing cosmetic grade ingredients, not craft grade (glitter especially!). TKB Trading is a great source :)

      Kathryn L. i blend up some rice and for me it works absolutely great taking out hard to reach and hidden powders. depending what i grind up, i keep my grinded rice and use in a face mask/scrub with a few other ingredients:)

      I was just about to ask the same question regarding cleaning the coffee grinder. Could you please elaborate on what you do? You don't use water at all? Some of these powders can really stain.

    I am looking at the book and so overwhelmed. I am confused even trying to decide what mineral makeup color blend I am. I would love to see how to choose. I can't tell if I am Courtney or Marie. I usually see about warm or cool tones. I would love to see more of the book's recipes broken down so I can have a visual.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd guess that you're more likely to be a Marie simply because I've only ever met two Courtney's (and one of them was Courtney herself, ha). I'd recommend whipping up a batch of "Marie" as written and see how it works for you; that'll give you a quick idea of where you're starting. You might also consider starting with blush or something where colour matching isn't key to help you find your footing :)
      I can't publish video versions of recipes as that goes against my publishing contract, but if you're ever in Calgary I often run DIY Mineral Makeup workshops at Windy Point Soap Making :)

    thank you this is great. what's the smallest amount of powder you can use for this to work? when I'm testing colors, I often just make a gram or two.

    • @kathryncastanares525
      @kathryncastanares525 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Michele G You know what works absolutely great for making tiny amounts?? one of those cute mini handheld "herb" grinder. it looks like a flashlight 🔦.lol but i used those when i would make eyeshadows in the beginning. i ended up buying 6 of them al9ng with a few different reg coffee grinders.lol The best part about the mini grinder is you wont lose any of your powder either. you can get them on amazon for i think like 3-6 dollars. totally worth a try! depending on seller, they do vary in quality, but work pretty much the same. i still have all my same ones from like a year ago all working great.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've been trying to get one of those mini grinders for a while but I'm not having much luck :( The first one was broken when it arrived and now I'm waiting for a replacement. They do seem like they would be super awesome, I just didn't want to make people get multiple grinders for the book if a coffee grinder would do!

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually don't do much less than 1.5-2 tsp of powder; less than that and what you lose to the grinder starts to be pretty significant and the blend is less efficient.

    • @micheleg1042
      @micheleg1042 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes I actually got one of those mini grinders (from coop coco) but it was glitchy from the start and now it's completely broken after just a month.. not really motivated to buy another but maybe I will. thanks. :)

  • @littlebeebs1

    I’d like to make my pigments more fine , but I work with tiny batches . Could one use a manual mini coffee burr grinder with a manual crank to grind tiny amounts (2-6 grams of pigment)? Or a tiny pepper mill ? Or , they even make little pill crushing mills that seem like they’d work . Seems like a full sized coffee grinder would just eat all the pigment up before it could be used . Id be using it to crush pigment for making lipsticks, so I don’t need a lot . Thank you 😊

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a smaller grinder that looks like a small flashlight for grinding smaller amounts of pigments and it works pretty well. If you search "flashlight grinder" on eBay quite a few come up :)

      It's probably jojoba oil, but it really doesn't matter-this is a technique video, not a recipe video :) Follow what the recipe you're using calls for! My book (www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/) has a mattifying setting powder recipe :)

      Thanks! I didn't forget :) Since this is a technique tutorial and not a recipe tutorial the colour of the final product is completely incidental-and I figured if I started swatching people would start asking why I "forgot" to include the recipe as well :P It's all in the book! This is just technique :)
