    Yes! This is what I've been waiting for! Who hoo! 💄💋 Grind those pigments! I'm no fuss. I've waited for ages for this. Powder foundation too...I love that color. I need it! That's so my plummy love.

      Humblebee & Me Bad coffee grinder! 😫 Guess what arrived from a certain Bee Keeper? I love the beautiful card, Marie. I was doing the Hive dance and got funny looks 👀 from the family. I, however, refused to be intimidated! Especially as my favorite powder foundation is 75% gone and there must be a way for me recreate it without whimpering. It's the first one that matches me 3/4 of the year. This is my "OMG" project. Lol

      Where can I buy these pigments?

  • @qtexperience4714
    @qtexperience4714 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a question, well two :
    I am having an issue with the using iron oxides in my lipsticks. I am following some tutorials on mixing colors and I’m not sure if I am using too much color pigments but I made a color using some brown oxide, yellow and red lake dye and titanium oxide and for some reason after mixing and mixing yellow bleeds through once I wet my skin or lips. What am I doing wrong?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! This sounds like it's a combination of an overall formulation problem, and different solubilities in your pigments. The lake dyes are water soluble, while the brown oxide and TD aren't, so it makes sense that they would dissolve into water when they encounter it-but a good film former will prevent that, so that's where the overall formulation problem comes in :) Happy making!

    Hi im really glad that i found your channel! I want to start making my own makeup now and im still doing some research. I want to make a cream blush that leaves a tint on my cheeks. I was wondering if you could suggest a pigment that i could use for it? Also can i add titanium dioxide to add opacity without compromising the shelf life of the finished product? And one last thing, do i need to put a preservative if use kaolin clay?

    Hey I have a bit of a weird question, so I have your book and I've tried making a few lipsticks and well, I never get the same colour as your book. For example, not to get too specific, but I attempted to make one called monarch, I believe and it came out SUPER pink. Like it looked deep red until it set, then was suddenly very pink.
    Do you have any idea what it could be? I have the same spoons as you for measuring so I have no clue what I could be doing wrong. So you think maybe titanium dioxide has different strengths per manufacturer, or could it be something else? I'm so confused.
    I've been winging colours and that had worked pretty well, so there's no real problem, but this has confused me quite a bif

    If I use natural colorants (turmeric, saffron, paprika, etc.) for my lipstick, will it be pigmented? Or will it just leave a slight tint?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Please don't; those things aren't pigments. They are not potent enough for makeup, they oxidize and fade, and you will also have solubility problems. They also aren't approved pigments for use in cosmetics. Stick to proper cosmetic grade pigments, you'll have much better results :)

    Is the red iron oxide vegan? I know you said you used a vegan base and the titanium oxide but I don’t want to assume it’s vegan. I’ve searched online for days to find an answer if iron oxides were vegan because they don’t absorb in the body?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe

      Yes, red iron oxide is vegan-it is made from minerals, there is no animal origin. Vegan-ness has nothing to do with whether or not something absorbs into the body.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely thought this way when I first got started, too, but I quickly realized that if I was determined to use everything I created in the process of formulation development I'd never make (or at least use) anything that was good (or even worked at all). A 5g batch of something like eyeliner could easily last 3 years, and I just couldn't face the idea of wearing eyeliner that sucked (smudged, transferred, ran, poorly pigmented, etc.) forever in the service of not tossing 5g of something. That's why small batches are so important! Quick iterations + very little waste if something doesn't work :)

      I do that all the time, all you need is a glass 1 ml eyedropper. It's better than throwing away a perfectly good tube, in areas where you can't even recycle those yet. I usually light my lipstick mixes over a tealight burner to make them extra hot. The eyedropper will need some hot water and a pipe cleaner afterwards, but I've never found it to be that big of a deal.

      This is for something like lipstick or eyeliner, which are drastically different products than hair conditioner. I'm afraid I've never made a hair dye, so I can't offer much advice there.

    yaay! im finally first!! lol jkjkjk. i always see people comment "First!" in the comment section and felt the need to say it too.lol this was perfect, as always. i get frustrated sometimes when trying to get all the chunks out. i do use my coffee grinders but ive noticed that i lose a TON of powders in one particular grinder i have and that happens to be my pigment grinder): when i have a good amount of powders to blend up, i use my little coffee frother and the metal attachment works great. however, it doesn't work too well with just a little amount. so thank you for this video. it definitely helped as always.

      Refer to the lip paint in my book-that's a matte lip colour :) It performs similarly to matte liquid lipstick, it just isn't liquid as the highly volatile liquids required for liquid lipstick aren't used in my book (I was trying to keep the ingredients list short and accessible).

    I know this is incredibly unconventional but do you think you could do a tutorial for white lipstick and yellow lipstick? I'm pretty sure i know how to do the white, if i could just get my hands on some white french clay. but yellow is so tricky! i think the particles in turmeric would be too large. also can i just say i love that you reply to everyone, i think thats really important and i appreciate it very much
    EDIT: I won't use iron oxides because i don't trust them ;-; Also i won't use mica because i don't trust the colored ones and won't support the child labour issue

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm sorry, but unless you can provide some verified, scientific, peer-reviewed studies as to why you "don't trust" iron oxides, I'm really not interested. This would be like me going to a cooking channel and telling them I "don't trust" basil and garlic, and asking them to come up with a new pesto recipe for me on the basis of my gut feelings alone.
      I definitely understand the allure of more "natural" alternatives for pigments, but they are not vetted for safe use on the skin (especially around the eyes). Natural does NOT mean safe (though it often means unregulated and untested), and unilaterally assuming it does and automatically distrusting ingredients you deem "un-natural" is not something I'm interested in. Iron oxides are specifically made to be lip and skin safe-they are guaranteed not to contain harmful levels of toxic heavy metals. That is why we don't use naturally occurring iron oxides-"natural" in that sense = heavy metal poisoning (and I guess heavy metals are "natural"...).
      If you want white lipstick, nothing will do the job better than titanium dioxide (white clays are rubbish in comparison-they are low pigment, low adhesion, and low coverage). Yellow oxide will make a brilliant yellow lipstick. Turmeric will not-it is gritty, low in potency, and unreliable. White clay and turmeric are not approved cosmetic colourants. Also, have you looked into the mining processes around clay? Are you certain those don't have any human rights issues? Did you know that it's not uncommon to find elevated levels of lead in bentonite clay? www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm491396.htm, www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm483838.htm. That is exactly why you SHOULD trust iron oxides and NOT clays when it comes to pigments you're using around your mouth!
      I know people want to make their own stuff so it's more "natural", but natural does not always mean safe! PLEASE do real, proper, scientific research into these ingredients before writing them off or putting them on your face!
      I'm not trying to be mean and I really hope you don't take great offence to this and think I'm writing off naturally occurring ingredients, because I'm not. I clearly love natural ingredients, but I value safety above "natural-ness", and you should, too. Many people have died from smallpox, and that's super natural... :/

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From your comment elsewhere it sounds like you are coming at this from a safety standard and not a suspicion of synthetic ingredients-apologies for the assumption! Since that is the case, please ensure you are properly vetting the alternatives you are attempting to use as well. Hold them to the same standard! Clays are especially tricky because they are mined and not refined or held to lead content standards the same way oxides are. Some spices and herbs are very irritating to the skin, and most of these things have not been rigorously tested for use on the skin. I have little to no interest in using spices instead of oxides, so I'm afraid you are on your own for such experiments. Good luck!

      Hello Marie! I'm replying with my other account and it's taken me this long because I was doing a lot more research and thinking through what I wanted to say.
      Okay, I was suspicious of iron oxides because of the trace amounts of lead. I now know those amounts are so very small and our bodies get rid of the lead as well (though not all of it, and that's what bugs me).
      I am more suspicious of micas only because I am not sure how they get all those different rainbow colors.
      The point of me making my own makeup was to avoid potentially harmful chemicals and I felt that if I had to buy mica, then I was just running towards the synthetic dyes they use to color it.
      I think I will still buy the mica and iron oxides, after what you told me and also from what I researched. I just would not use the products I make during pregnancy, lactation, and I would not let a child under 11 use them. That's my compromise.
      Thanks for telling me that clays can have high levels of lead. I didn't know that. I currently use bentonite clay to brush my teeth and I don't think I'll stop until the jar runs out. Do you think thats a good idea?
      Also why do you use/own bentonite clay if you know there can be high levels of lead? I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but I am genuinely curious and I trust everything you say because you know so much!!
      Also, my other question is why are you comfortable using micas and oxides? Is it because of the same reasons I listed?
      Thanks
      Lead and Parabens,
      Selenaa
