    Question two is comforting, in a way, since it shows that even those mastering a skill have to start somewhere in a potentially frustrating journey

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      In all things, we start as beginners. However, it's typically easier and less emotionally painful to make mistakes in other skills or crafts. Individuals with dysphoria tend to wrap their validity up into voice. When combined with the fact that voice is unique in that the only way to really make progress is to take action it can create recipes for hopelessness and anxiety of failure. Making mistakes is completely normal. They are the educational moments that pave the way to success.

    2:43 I would like to add: For some people might work the argument that you are just trying to learn "a girl voice" for fun, to troll your friends or whatever, because some cis male folks actually do that, Natt for example

    I just found this channel yesterday and I have to say. In addition to you being very down to earth you also break down the information and material into bite sized segments. This makes the material more easily processed and easier to understand and more fun to practice. It feels great to know how to play with ones voice and feel comfort knowing not only how it works but also why something might not work.

    Oh my GOD!! I was not expecting the Broodwar pull--I grew up with it and fell in love with the pro scene last year. I watch all the ASL matches with my 65 year-old Dad and it's just my favorite thing--I've been wanting to get into playing but it feels really intimidating (both gameplay and community) so it's really comforting to see another trans face in the community!!!!!!

    Your videos are my new favorite thing. For a few years now, I had given up on my voice because I was ashamed of it. Even though I've been out for close to six years, I still have a lot of internalized transphobia, and sometimes I just reflexively feel really scared or endangered whenever I do something that others could perceive as me "trying to" be feminine. But your videos make vocal feminization feel like a really safe space to explore and I feel like I'm finally starting to find my own voice

    @TheEmptySkys 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Thank you so much for answering my question! Also you are absolutely right about your answer. Internalized transphobia is definitely a real thing. I've been coming to terms with being trans for months now and I even tried coming out to a gender-fluid friend of mine (which I kinds sorta succeeded at). I still cannot say the sentence "I am transgender" out loud. It's a really rough thing, ya know. It triggers bad imposter syndrome for me and when I really want to tell someone I get that same anxious feeling I would get as a child when I would admit to doing something wrong and get in trouble ya know. Not sure if I put that into the correct words lol. But still, it's comforting knowing that I'm not the only person who experiences that 🙂.

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I came out as genderfluid too at first even though I knew I identified as something else. It helped feel less dysphoria when my body didn't align with what I wanted. I only did it to make it easier on myself to process the pain of dysphoria. So I feel that

      In response to these sort of things, I developed the epiphany that the Foundation of Respect is adopting people's decisions about themselves and not imposing our decisions onto others. It comes from a place of self-respect to reject negation from others. just let go of the negation, as What we focus on, expands, and we use our time in the best ways that we can.

    i used to sing in a choir, and due to me being 🥚 i AVOIDED being an Alto at all costs but was still "very cis manly man" lmao 😂😅 but yeah it means i still have good range and could do the things you said in the last vid pretty easy. i also nornally speak about an octave higher normally above the falsetto, which i worked out is in the ~150-200 Hz range. but yeah thanks, ive been working on reducing weight to sound less masc.
    one thing is, i have a stutter, but thankfully with voice training it isnt an issue at all. also my adhd meds have helped it alot too! im really hoping my stutter will improve with voice training too, because neuroplasticity, higher confidence, etc.
    really interestingly, the majority of my issues with my stutter has been when using my masc voice and when speaking/recording to others. my stutter also varies alot. it goes from basically nonexistent to i basically cannot speak sometimes. so i wonder if it's partly dysphoria related?

    @MariWakocha 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have recently found that I'm genderfluid, but ranging more between non-binary/androgynous and feminine without really going masc. I have struggled a lot with voice and identity, because on one hand I really want a voice that can do what anime voice actors do. In particular, women in anime screaming orders, like in the military, triggers an intense longing and a weird kind of euphoria imagining myself being her. I also like the singer in a Japanese band called Lightbringer. When her voice goes really high I just feel free and I want to do it do. It's like watching birds fly and wish you could fly too. On the other hand it doesn't quite feel like me. I can't see myself speaking like that all the time. I didn't know about Savannah Brown until you mentioned her, but I think that's the kind of voice I could see myself speak with. Most voices that really fascinate me (although not all) are deeper or otherwise not high pitched. Another one of my favorite voices is Hikari Mitsushima.

    Idk that much about the actual vocal anatomy or techniques involved but it's kind of interesting how you can do that demon voice and still have trouble doing a male voice despite a good amount of time trying to get back to practicing it

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The demon voice there is created via epiglottal trilling. It actually doesn't use the vocal folds at all. Using my vocal folds to generate increasingly lower and heavier sounds (except for strohbass stuff) is what I struggle with these days. So the epiglottal stuff lets me bypass that lowness barrier and go suuuuper lower.

    is it possible for you to do a video tutorial on exactly how to set up the Spectro analyzer exactly how you have yours? In many of your videos you have set ranges and when trying to follow along it can be difficult without having a comparison

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure. I am kind of sketched out by making a lot of videos using software though. We should always be listening above all else and beginners can sometimes see voice software and end up staring at a screen practicing voice. Voice analysis software definitely has a use but it can be easily abused or misused by beginners so by opening that can of worms here it might do more harm than good. I'll consider it though! Maybe a video even explaining the use cases for it to try and stop the analysis abuse :D

    Hey Zheanna.. i have a question, will be awesome to hear your opinion. As we get old will it be possible to still have so feminine voice after we train it? Or will it change or be hard to keep like that

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, we will absolutely be able to maintain our feminine voices as we age. Aging of the voice *does* occur, but it doesn't have to impact our ability to feminize. I've worked with students in their 70s and 80s who are still able to feminize and in some cases have maintained their feminine voice for 60 years. Long term it's more about behavioral normalization. We will sound older though -- but there are techniques to "deage" the sound of a voice.

    How did you go about feminizing your hands? They look so pretty, delicate, and soft, so I’m just wondering if it’s basically all genetics or if you’ve got any tricks up your sleeve

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use tretinoin on my hands. But that just stops them from aging. I haven't done anything to feminize my hands. I've gotten a lot of comments about them throughout my life even when I was pre-transition. I don't notice them myself. They just feel like appendages of creation.

    After years of feminizing, could we possibly create a whistle tone?.

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely! You don't even need feminization for a whistle tone (m3). Trying practicing with lots of adduction and slowly inhaling to make sound at first. Controlling whistle tone is what is hard, not producing it at all. :)

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No not really. Power chords are Root - Fifth - Octave in 12-note equal temperament. 12-note equal's fifth is off by 1.95 cents. Equal divisions of the octave cause all of the frequency relationships to be irrational ratios. Just intonation is the use of rational ratios to make frequency relationship. We could tune the power chord justly and it would be a 2:3:4 frequency relationship though. A powerchord is just a fifth and an octave. The chords I was playing are deep extended chords in just intonation: 37:45:50:56:60:67:68:89 vs 2:3:4

    11:55 ok but why not just use the actual chord names instead? because all of those chords have official musical names

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      no they don't have clear names in all cases because these aren't 12-equal temperament. Only 12edo and some pythagorean or meantone extended systems have clear chord names. Chords built in JI which have similar quality to 12edo structures can easily be named but even something as simple as: 8:10:11:13:15 doesn't have a clear name. I'd have to call it MajS4n6vM7 (Maj, super fourth, neutral 6, down major 7) which is not ideal. I have done my best to give names to novel structures but there are far too many and the old chord names are far too low resolution to capture all. You can see some of my names for these on the Primodal Chord Archive on the Xenharmonic wiki and some of my categorical names popping up during the demonstration here. However, even if you give these discrete names, which is a great objective, there an infinite amount of ways to tune any abstract chord type due to the way just intonation and rational tuning system works. For example, Major triad can be expressed by 4:5:6 or by 22:28:33 or by 34:43:51. These are all **major** triads. They are just tuned differently. Thus, the ratio enumerated is the only way to accurately describe the blueprints to the chord while the chord name is just a rough categorical description.
