Legnum VR4 Basic Engine Health Check

  • In today's video I do some basic tests to try and minimise where the burning oil is ocming from. I don't want to spend 15+ hours replacing the turbo charger if it is not at fault. So I try to rule out other failures such as head gasket failure.

Mines did that exact same thing, smoked the same way at idle, smoked more with revs, sort of bubbling pops out of the exhaust, it's the turbo. As for which one, you will have to remove the piping and check shaft play but best bet is replace both while your at it, have fun doing the rear turbo lol, definitely change your timing belt, spark plugs and service your injectors but timing belt replacement is most important. Run and engine flush, use cheap oil to refill, run for 500k or so then drain and replace with good oil. Next step would be trans fluid, diff and ayc pump fluid change and please use the manufacturer's spec fluid or it could lead to you having a very bad time in the future

loved this engine... remember seeing an na 24 valve shogun at the cardiff convention back in '97 or so... loved it!

Is the the pajero evolution? Would love to see one of them up close. Cant wait to try this one with both turbos working ad they should

The squeaking is probably one of the pulleys from the Aircon, power steering, alternator, belt tensioner, etc.
Smoke: buy a cheap coolant tester. One of those thingies you put on the radiator instead of the cap to see if the color of the testing fluid changes. If it does, there's oil in the coolant and then you're sure if the head gasket has an issue or not. A compression test is also a good test, just a lot more work, especially the bank of 3 cylinders at the back of the engine, for which you'll need to be unbolting quite some stuff (intake manifold, throttle body, IC piping, etc etc

I agree I think it was the upper timing belt pulley. Its stopped squeaking since.
i will try the fluid tester aswell

I'd get some coolant tester strips as a first step to diagnosing the issues. I would say that looks like the HG is on its way out. On tickover it looks more like steam than oil. The smoke looked a bit more blue when you revved it but hard to tell on viseo on a grey day. Turbo seals are probably leaking too but HG is likely compromised. I wouldn't use K-Seal. It'll gum up the coolant galleries and then you'll have more problems and have to take the engine apart. K-Seal is for £300 fiestas. This deserves better treatment!

I wont be sticking any k seal in this as you say it deserves better, Im hoping for the best and preparing for the worst lol

Pull the hoses off the turbos and check with your index finger for excess play on the shaft. The churping noise could be the waterpump..

Thats a good idea and what I would usually do, I am reluctant to do major work on it outside so as soon as the evo is done i'll get stuck into the legnum

The turbo Probably is causing the white smoke. I suggest replace the turbo cartridge & spark plug. Also looks for any coolant leak by looking below the engine bay. My caldina gtt is facing same white smoke issue after replacing new turbo cartridge it seem solve then another issue that is water pump is leaking. Now it all fix everything all right.

garnish cover of the rear hatch gate is a special specification car cover called "American Custom". It is still a valuable early model VR-4 in Japan now. I want to get closer to the normal state♪

Perfect excuse for a big turbo...yeh your better replacing both of them, not an easy job doing a single on these...with alot of custom fab needed.
And my 2.8 v6 turbocharger is located top mounted where your airfilter box is. With the compressor housing facing towards the front as you open the bonnet. Easy to replace

head gasket would result in vapour and oil in the coolant, not in blue smoke.
this could be valve seals, or turbo.
turbo can be checked by removing the intercooler pipes. if good quantity of oil will be found there, then the problem is obvious.
valve stem seals have to be replaced once in a while, with guiders.
this can be checked on a hill, driving downwards with engine brake. after a km or two when you step on the gas and blue smoke comes out... then the seals are f.cked.
the worse scenario is one (or more than one) of the piston rings stucked/broke, and the worst is the cylinder walls are worn out :/

You need to get the head gasket tested as well as somehow check the turbo units. It will be easier to diagnose the head gaskets with a pressure check. If that passes it’s probably the whistles 👍

    • @rowanlewisuk
      @rowanlewisuk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Compression test might be the easiest way to do that

@@rowanlewisuk the coolant system can be pressurised to check for leaks by pumping air in, never done it my self but seen it done, she looks like it’s steaming rather than burning oil

  • @Kristalinkata

No, no the coolant doesn't work that way on those engines. It has to be checked when it reaches operating temperature...

I loved it till you said its an auto.
Rather have an unreliable manual scoob than an auto legnum.
