  • The Mitsubishi Legnum VR4 is a powerful twin-turbo V6 station wagon with an advanced all wheel drive system and a manual transmission. It has ‘276’ horsepower and a whole lot of 90’s JDM character. But how does it drive? And does the performance match its aggressive looks? Thomas and James are excited to find out! We hope you enjoy the episode. SUBSCRIBE!
Huge thank you to www.eclectionauto.com for loaning us their Legnum - it’s for sale!

Hello beautiful people, as pointed out in a comment, we said that this car has the special Advanced Yaw Control system because it is a Type S. While it's true that it is a Type S, Active Yaw Control was available on non-Type S as well, just not the Type-V (the very base version). Appreciatcha

As a loooong time VR4 guy, stuff worthy of note for this particular car. The bodykit is mostly aftermarket, probably from a lad in Russia. The headlight eyebrows in particular are things he sells. The mirrors are "ganador" style, likely also from Russia. The driving lights which are usually in the bottom corners of the front bumper have been removed and it looks just hollow back there.
The air intake is a bit naff - that's a hot air sucker and whilst cool looking not the best for good MAD. It has aftermarket intercooler piping including the elbow that goes to the intake (that's good) but it also looks like it still has the stock intercooler (that's not so good). If you own one of these cars, get a "HDI GT2" intercooler. It's an easy install (check my channel for an install video). Big power VR4s should keep the airbox but *wiill* also need a hole cut in the bottom of the airbox and a pipe connected to it from a suitable other cold air source. If not, the insane air flow will suck the bonnet rubber lip into the air intake and starve the engine of air.
This car also looks to have the stock power steering "cooler". It's rubbish - just a loop of pipework - and a hard day at the track will cook your pump. For like $10 you can get a small oil cooler and fit it yourself. Do it as soon as you buy one of these cars.
Stock these will put about 132awkw down on a "Mainline" brand chassis dyno. It's common for the VR4 to show a ~70kw drop between the crank power and the at-the-wheels power. So, they are about 206kw at the crank. Stock engines can be tuned to about 200kw at the wheels in the absolute best case without major work other than exhaust, intercooler, injectors. You can't throw heaps of boost at the bottom end without getting rods and pistons, but I've done it as have others. 300kw at all four wheels is then realistic, especially on E85. You will need one of the available Coil on Plug conversion kits and Denso VK22 spark plugs if you're going anywhere near high power or ethanol. Big power will also require that the 3rd gear is re-welded otherwise you will rip the outer gear ring off the inner one.
The stock ECU can be tuned for flex fuel with a custom ROM, but you are better off with Link or Haltech here if you're in the USA as niobody will know how to tune that custom ROM.
Other good mods to make on these are the Evo front LSD. Any aftermarket Evo IV-VI front diffs will fit in the transfer case, which is identical to the Evo case. The Super AYC differential for the rear is also a drop-in with no electrical or mechanical work, and gives you better torque vectoring.
I have all this stuff on mine. It's a beast.

The good things: handles like an Evo, no lag from the small turbos, interior is very nice for this generation of car, big enough for friends and family. Bad things: engine potential is limited by the small turbos and no room for bigger turbos, various electrical gremlins, not great on fuel.

Slightly different again. The 6a13tt engine in this doesnt share its block with another platform. I think there were a few rare instances of naturally aspirated variants. It's 2.5L and has a very healthy torque curve compared to alot of other cars of the time :)

At one point you could buy one of these in okay working condition for around 6k€. I owned manual Galant VR4 back in 2009 and boy was that thing special. In winter it could beat pretty much any car on the road and in summer it gave at least fair contest to BMW and Porches. It was comfortable too and all for Corolla money! Mitsubishi totally nailed the styling and I think facelift Legnum is the best looking wagon ever made. Out of curiosity I've been occasionally eyeing these and most you can find are in various stages of disrepair with engine and/or transmission problem, AYC and ABS problems etc. Or just disassembled unfinished projects with interior backed in boxes and engine in the trunk.
Low purchase price but high maintenance has really proven fatal for these cars but these are, in my opinion, one of the finest cars ever made.

My '05 Mazda6 GT manual wagon is, at long last, wearing out. Something like this looks so appealing, because in among new cars, a sporting, manual transmission is a pipe dream, and the only things with the kind of rear seat and hauling room are tall, heavy, souless CUVs

I love Mitsubishi they're my favorite car brand lol. I've owned 8 Mitsubishi, 4 of them being Eclipse (2g, 3g, 4g, 3g in that order). Currently daily drive a 2003 Eclipse GT Spyder, it was my favorite gen so I had to buy another one and this one I'll be keeping. The 6g72 can be a pain in the ass to work on (3g Eclipse, Stealth, 3000gt) but its what I'm used to and actually enjoy doing all the mechanical work on it. Great cars, super reliable as long as you keep on top of timing belt/water pump replacements, and cars that are kind of under the radar, not in every conversation, etc.

The $10,000 buys on the main channel really gets my attention.
I bought a '08 CLK550 Coupe for under $5,000. 381 h.p. and almost 400 torque. Did the exhaust and it sounds really good.
It would be nice to see a run-off between that, a C55, C32, CLK55, cars you can easily find for under $10k, even a C63 W204, I see a lot for under $20k, a great bang for your buck with great power.
Would be a great video for the older Mercs.

Offfttt owned a legnum vr4 and galant vr4 with evo 8 driveline, the shorter ratios made it so rapid for mostly stock! These cars are so underated and probably the best balance between comfort and speed/agility, the AYC diff makes it feel so nimble for a heavier car, one of the few cars that i had to tell my brain to trust the car ripping through sharp corners, it didnt seem possible mind you mind had good coilovers and tyres/handling mods

Used to own one, faster than a WRX wagon but not as quick, awesome car.
Just fyi, Legnum was just the name for the Galant wagon, there was no 'Galant' wagon, like alot of other JDM cars the wagon version had a completely different name for some reason.
Also this is a mid 90's car, NOT early 2000's. They built them into the very beginning of 2002, but if I remember right it was released in '96.
Also also also, VR4 is a really special badge for Mitsi fans. It denotes the performance version of the Galant and was first introduced in 1987. This is special because that car was the first to have four wheel drive and MOST IMPORTANTLY, it had the first 4G63T engine. They took that car rallying and it's technical systems were so successful that they migrated them into their new Lancer, giving birth to the Lancer Evolution. That VR4 is often called the Evo 0 and is legendary amongst fans. The later Galants VR4's were true Ralliart cars and carried the current Lancer Evolution systems like AYC, essentially big Evo's.

I remember seriously considering one of these when the JDM craze initially started to die down, I looked at these (also called a galant vr4 in the UK I think), a Subaru legacy GTB and a Nissan Stagea, my budget was only about 4k and I bought the Subaru - what a car that was, sequential twin turbos and mighty boost. Ended up dying and I traded it for VW which was shite. This was back when an R32 gtr could be had for about 7-8k.
