A few months later I got a handwritten letter from Pete. The envelope had a return address label that said Pete and Toshi Seeger with their home address. I was so honored that he wrote me. He routinely wrote back to people with encouraging words and answered questions that folks sent to him. He felt it was his responsibility to respond to his fans since they were the ones who supported him. Pete Seeger was a class act as a musician, social justice advocate and just a warm caring person.
I'm watching in 2025, shortly after seeing A Complete Unknown, and as much as I've always loved Bob Dylan, that movie made me go from liking Pete Seeger to loving him and wanting to know more. I'm so glad this is on TH-cam because this has cemented my love and respect for this beautiful American patriot. May he RIP, if anyone deserves to, he does.

That movie really does feel like a Pete Seeger movie in disguise. Almost as if that is the movie Mangold really wanted to make, but he needed Dylan to attract investors. Probably should have been a folk music miniseries.
I come back to this documentary when I cannot stand the headlines anymore, when I feel like I am powerless in a world so full of hate. It is the encouragement of Mr. Seeger's legacy that inspires me to keep going and to call out injustice. I may not wield a guitar or banjo, but it is our responsibility to keep striving towards peace.

Born in 1949, graduated from High School in 1967, sucked into the Vietnam war from 1968-69, graduated from college in 1975 and, finally, a 30+ year career in transportation management. Through all of those years there were many influences on my life - both good and bad - but Pete Seeger wrote the song book that brought it all together for me. I picked this video on a random search just for "something to do" tonight. I am so grateful that I did. Thank you, Pete.
I discovered Pete Seeger as a 12 year old when my unsuspecting parents gave me a copy of the Weavers 1961 reunion Concert at Carnegie Hall.From the quiet provincial city of Geelong my heart and politics were formed by the music and passion of this man. I owe a lifetime of political awareness and action for justice to Pete Seeger and now approaching 60 I want to express my gratitude and pride in what this son of America has taught me as a world citizen who loves singing.
I think if I had to choose only one word to describe Pete Seeger, the word would be "authentic." Completely original, he has never wavered from his early beliefs, never sold out. He is wonderful. The world is lucky to still have him around.
Pete Seeger played the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in 1988, and I was one of a lucky group of journalists to sit at his feet and take part in a group interview. It was one of the highlights of my life. Now, with tears running down my cheeks that the world has lost such a wonderful idealist and force for peace, I hope that his influence stays on, years and decades from now. The world needs so many more people like him.

I taught a class on Dylan at The New School in the Village in the early 2000’s and wanted Pete as a guest. Wrote him, he called me back and said he was too old to come to NYC but appreciated the offer. Best phone call of my life❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I'm almost 80 years old , and I became aware of Pete with that Weavers' concert in Carnegie Hall way back in the 50's . His clear, proud voice caught me first , then his prodigious musicianship , and when I got a little older , his sheer and beautiful humanity . I was too young at the time to understand our government's nasty efforts in silencing and destroying Pete for ridiculous reasons , but those were nasty years in our political life . However, they kept him off the air for a long time , but he kept on being Pete and spreading his love for peace and equality and justice for all . And his message was too important , and he thrived and the American folk music world developed and grew . There is no other person who has so influenced my life like Pete Seeger . I consider him to be my father, my brother , my friend , my teacher and mentor . His inspiration burns still in my soul . God loves you, Pete , as does much of the world . When Pete played Merlefest in NC, April 2006, my 30 year old dream to sing along with Pete Seeger came true. It didn't matter how his voice sounded. The thrill was to sing along with him. He only played the one set at the festival and did it on the tiny Children's Stage, with no seating, the smallest stage at the multi-stage festival. His grandson Tao played acoustic guitar, as I recall. He came out and insisted that all the adults up front move back and all the kids move up front, which everyone did. Who is going to be the one to ignore Pete Seeger kindly asking you to move back for the kids? It was so wonderful. Him singing and playing his old banjo with the motto painted on it and telling stories between songs about the old days with the Almanac Singers, Woody Guthrie, Lee Hays, with a bunch of kids in front of the stage, sitting on the ground and looking up at him. When he came out solo to play a song for the big finale on the last day of the festival on the mainstage, I raced up to the front and got as close as I could to him. He went into Lonesome Valley and I sang along with him the loudest I've ever sang in my life. He had to have heard me. People next to me were looking at me and smiling. I was exhilarated for days afterword. It meant so much to me.

Today I found a 2002 edition of his 'How To Play 5-String Banjo', what a find !, I'm over the moon as I couldn't afford a brand new one. Now I can learn to play my banjo with lessons from THE MASTER. I just can't say how joyous I feel !.
Pete visited my college in the mid-60s. They removed all the seats from the student union building, put a small circular stage in the middle of the floor which elevated Pete about a foot about the crowd. I sat at his feet and listened in awe. I realize now I should have appreciated him much more.
In Project Musiceyes, a little music program I started for a group of traumatized refugees here in Holland in 2015, both Turn, Turn, Turn and We Shall Overcome always made us cry. I printed them back to back on the same sheet. Pete Seeger was the man I most admired, and he modeled the courage I would need to do the right thing, even when people threw monkey shit at my tiara. Like Joe Hill, he will never die. If you get enough people singing together, the mountain will move!

I remember the time my brother Pete went to Vietnam...my sister Eileen was protesting the war in high school...my Dad was in such a quandry....he a WWII vet....not liking that his son needed to go...Oh what times...I was 10 and half understanding the outer world.....Thank you Pete...Woody.... Welcome to the fan club! I found out about him in the early 1970s, and felt like I was a latecomer! Pete Seeger definitely helped shape my life, and I owe him an unpayable debt of gratitude.
@@lovesings2us I used to be in a singing group called the Power Of Song. It was a Pete Seeger revival Group out of Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music headed up by Mark Dvorak who actually met Pete and learned a few things from him. When I ,over here I started yup a Pete Seeger Sing A Long Concert each May to commemorate Petes Birthday. This concert was more of a sing a long concert and included about 12 other musicians from the area. We did it for two years and then Covid hit and the local music community went into "hiding." During the Pan dermic we lost a few musicians and now others are older and very ill, really great old timers who knew all the folk music for Petes era. It was great. while it lasted. We still haver an Open Mic once a month locally at one of the bars and also get together to sig at the senior center once a month but our musical fellowship took a hit during COVID. I now live in Western Michigan, South Haven. Most of the present musicians are mostly doing covers and originals and not much of the classic folk music or Pete's music. When I tried to gather musicians to help me do the Peter Concerts I was told by a few "No' because Pete was a communist. Can ya imagine that after all these yeas and all that Pete did? Safe journeys in these chaotic times.
I always liked his music but did not know a lot of the details presented in this documentary. It took a strong personal constitution and unflappable bravery to be Pete Seeger. What a tremendous inspiration he is for human beings everywhere.
Those of us old enough to have seen and experienced Pete live are lucky indeed, especially as our democracy now faces its greatest challenge from the fascist Republican oligarchs.

I loved Pete Seeger in my teens and early twenties, and this docoumentary was a trip down memory lane. I sang along with many of the songs. Funny how songs stay with you for so many years. I am 85 years old, and i remember many of these songs as though I’d been at a hootenanny last night.
What a wonderful man, sadly missed. Love that scene at 22:30 when Pete and Toshi are walking through Greenwich Village and a woman approaches them and another woman blows a kiss and touches his jacket as if she was blessing him. Of course the whole documentary is great but that scene is unforgettable. Miss you Pete.
Picked up 5-String Banjo in 1970, working from “How to Play the 5-String Banjo (Third Edition-Revised)” by Pete. Finally got to see him perform in OKC in the late 80s. Still playing. Still inspired. Still writing protest songs in this age of criminal oligarchies.

At camp in the ‘60’s, every song around the campfire was usually accompanied by a guitar player who had been inspired by Pete Seeger, songs like: If I Had a Hammer, Michael, Row the Boat Ashore, This Land is Your Land, We Shall Overcome, Five Hundred Miles, Kum Ba Ya, My Lord, etc.
I am sad to hear of Pete's passing, not for him, but for the world. A light has dimmed; who will pick up that torch and carry it forward? Either way, he lives on in our hearts and in our lives, for he influenced so many of us to aim higher and live better. He brought about change through peace; the only change that will last. RIP

WOW, brings back memories. I sure remember hearing GOODNIGHT IRENE GOODNIGHT constantly on the radio when I was a kid. Pet Seeger was an ongoing force through all the early years, and certainly well into the 60's/sure vividly remember the trouble stirred up by WAST DEEP IN THE BIG MUDDY on the Smother Brothers show. Probably the closest thing to Pete Seeger style and sound was---maybe suprisingly---Peter Tork when he went off on his own to continue the banjo tradition and songs like CRIPPLE CREEK and CUCKOO and IN MY KITCHEN (which is more pure blues). But he had a similar sound and ---when not re-doing Monkees songs,---toured with James Stanley and followed the more "folk-y" tradition. His voice was similar in some ways too. Pete Seeger was a true hero across so many generations. Thanks for the video.
Pete taught me how to sing, phonetically, and syllepticaly. When I was five he came to sing at the Randolph school, so often I thought he was a teacher there. When my father first met him he was painting the school porch. He taught me more about love, empathy, courage, hard work and politics, than any man apart from my father. You're missed by all of us. Trying to respond to Diane Henkel below: I have a photo of Pete Seeger from probably 1966 in Central Park. My mom had brought me there for a peace demonstration, one of the early ones against the war in Vietnam. In the photo, Pet has his guitar slung behind his back, with his hands out to the sides, holding back his entourage. He was holding back the entourage because a child, myself, was trying to take his picture with my first camera as they were walking towards me. That's who he was.
watched the whole thing. Im a child of the 50s and 60s and I remember Pete, saw him once in a concert, and never forgot. He was an amazing man, from start to finish. I miss him every day.
What an inspiration for such a pivotal time in our country. Pete Seeger had the power of convection, the strength of love and the gift of music that still moves me today. May he rest in peace.

I started on banjo with Pete's red book in 1969 , & I'm still pickin & writing songs today Pete stands as my greatest American hero--a giant of a man

Pete Seeger , what a human being!, such a wonderful all round person. Today I found a 2002 edition of his 'How To Play 5-String Banjo', what a find !, I'm over the moon as I couldn't afford a brand new one. Now I can learn to play my banjo with lessons from THE MASTER. I just can't say how joyous I feel !.

I watched this from beginning to end; a great documentary!! Pete Seeger was a great man, and a humble man.
Pete visited my college in the mid-60s. They removed all the seats from the student union building, put a small circular stage in the middle of the floor which elevated Pete about a foot about the crowd. I sat at his feet and listened in awe. I realize now I should have appreciated him much more.
Seeing Pete Seeger teach those little kids, "This Land is Your Land" made me cry. What a pure soul he was.
In Project Musiceyes, a little music program I started for a group of traumatized refugees here in Holland in 2015, both Turn, Turn, Turn and We Shall Overcome always made us cry. I printed them back to back on the same sheet. Pete Seeger was the man I most admired, and he modeled the courage I would need to do the right thing, even when people threw monkey shit at my tiara. Like Joe Hill, he will never die. If you get enough people singing together, the mountain will move!
Dear Pete I have learned so much from you starting with my first words of english
through your songs when I was 14 years old .
Now as a Frenchman of 65 I can see you on the internet and listen without problem .

We sang all of his songs in my youth. In Germany. This documentary brings back those days. What an awesome human being.

I remember the time my brother Pete went to Vietnam...my sister Eileen was protesting the war in high school...my Dad was in such a quandry....he a WWII vet....not liking that his son needed to go...Oh what times...I was 10 and half understanding the outer world.....Thank you Pete...Woody.... Martin... and my hero...Muhammad Ali and all the many other movers and shakers of this world! It's our turn!

I’ve known about Pete Seeger for just a few months, but he has quickly become one of the human beings I admire most
Welcome to the fan club! I found out about him in the early 1970s, and felt like I was a latecomer! Pete Seeger definitely helped shape my life, and I owe him an unpayable debt of gratitude.
His music and words still inspire me to be a better human being.
Me too. He and his songs live in my heart. Like a torch in the night. Urging me to work with others for justice and love.

@@lovesings2us I used to be in a singing group called the Power Of Song. It was a Pete Seeger revival Group out of Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music headed up by Mark Dvorak who actually met Pete and learned a few things from him. When I ,over here I started yup a Pete Seeger Sing A Long Concert each May to commemorate Petes Birthday. This concert was more of a sing a long concert and included about 12 other musicians from the area. We did it for two years and then Covid hit and the local music community went into "hiding." During the Pan dermic we lost a few musicians and now others are older and very ill, really great old timers who knew all the folk music for Petes era. It was great. while it lasted. We still haver an Open Mic once a month locally at one of the bars and also get together to sig at the senior center once a month but our musical fellowship took a hit during COVID. I now live in Western Michigan, South Haven. Most of the present musicians are mostly doing covers and originals and not much of the classic folk music or Pete's music. When I tried to gather musicians to help me do the Peter Concerts I was told by a few "No' because Pete was a communist. Can ya imagine that after all these yeas and all that Pete did? Safe journeys in these chaotic times.
How many of us have taken a guitar and started to sing because they wanted to follow you? Thanks for every thing.
My parents loved Pete Seeger so in the 50s they took me to a concert he performed at in my city. I remember we sang along with him to his songs.
I always liked his music but did not know a lot of the details presented in this documentary. It took a strong personal constitution and unflappable bravery to be Pete Seeger. What a tremendous inspiration he is for human beings everywhere.
Pete Seeger was the absolute best. I was a child when I first heard him.there will never be anyone else like him.

I loved Pete Seeger in my teens and early twenties, and this docoumentary was a trip down memory lane. I sang along with many of the songs. Funny how songs stay with you for so many years. I am 85 years old, and i remember many of these songs as though I’d been at a hootenanny last night.

What a wonderful man, sadly missed. Love that scene at 22:30 when Pete and Toshi are walking through Greenwich Village and a woman approaches them and another woman blows a kiss and touches his jacket as if she was blessing him. Of course the whole documentary is great but that scene is unforgettable. Miss you Pete.
Picked up 5-String Banjo in 1970, working from “How to Play the 5-String Banjo (Third Edition-Revised)” by Pete. Finally got to see him perform in OKC in the late 80s. Still playing. Still inspired. Still writing protest songs in this age of criminal oligarchies.

At camp in the ‘60’s, every song around the campfire was usually accompanied by a guitar player who had been inspired by Pete Seeger, songs like: If I Had a Hammer, Michael, Row the Boat Ashore, This Land is Your Land, We Shall Overcome, Five Hundred Miles, Kum Ba Ya, My Lord, etc.

I am sad to hear of Pete's passing, not for him, but for the world. A light has dimmed; who will pick up that torch and carry it forward? Either way, he lives on in our hearts and in our lives, for he influenced so many of us to aim higher and live better. He brought about change through peace; the only change that will last. RIP

WOW, brings back memories. I sure remember hearing GOODNIGHT IRENE GOODNIGHT constantly on the radio when I was a kid. Pet Seeger was an ongoing force through all the early years, and certainly well into the 60's/sure vividly remember the trouble stirred up by WAST DEEP IN THE BIG MUDDY on the Smother Brothers show.
Probably the closest thing to Pete Seeger style and sound was---maybe suprisingly---Peter Tork when he went off on his own to continue the banjo tradition and songs like CRIPPLE CREEK and CUCKOO and IN MY KITCHEN (which is more pure blues). But he had a similar sound and ---when not re-doing Monkees songs,---toured with James Stanley and followed the more "folk-y" tradition. His voice was similar in some ways too.
Pete Seeger was a true hero across so many generations. Thanks for the video.
Pete taught me how to sing, phonetically, and syllepticaly. When I was five he came to sing at the Randolph school, so often I thought he was a teacher there. When my father first met him he was painting the school porch. He taught me more about love, empathy, courage, hard work and politics, than any man apart from my father. You're missed by all of us. We miss you. 💚❤️💜🖤

Trying to respond to Diane Henkel below: I have a photo of Pete Seeger from probably 1966 in Central Park. My mom had brought me there for a peace demonstration, one of the early ones against the war in Vietnam. In the photo, Pet has his guitar slung behind his back, with his hands out to the sides, holding back his entourage. He was holding back the entourage because a child, myself, was trying to take his picture with my first camera as they were walking towards me. That's who he was.

watched the whole thing. Im a child of the 50s and 60s and I remember Pete, saw him once in a concert, and never forgot. He was an amazing man, from start to finish. I miss him every day.
