Upgrading my Off-Grid Power System at the Beach House - Ecoflow 5kw Power Kit

  • I installed a basic off-grid power system at the beach house when we bought the place 6 years ago with the intention of upgrading when I could afford it. The batteries are now getting tired and I'm having to run the petrol generator frequently to charge them up.. When Ecoflow offered me a 5kw lithium power kit to test out I gladly accepted. I'm very impressed with it, I can retire the old generator.

    How is it your 24 hour day is so much longer than ours? You get so much done, looking after 3 properties some distance apart, fixing roads, turning trees into planks and firewood, fixing machinery, helping to fix other people's machinery, go out boating and fishing, explore, maintain a relationship with your family, and still have time to go away for a weeks holiday from time to time, and the only time I see you in a rush is when you speed up the camera footage.

    Great and informative video as always Marty. With regard to the battery box, any battery can go faulty and the fire risk is real, chances of putting them out once in thermal runaway is slim. I would suggest a battery box away from the house completely, if the worst ever happens it can burn itself out safely 👍

    Ecoflow makes a good system, their warranty is the weak point, as with all these "solar generators" . 24 months for the serious components, 36 more fore other parts. That's not tremendously long for the expense of a full blown unit with panels and extra battery pods. The greatest issue I've seen with all of these systems, across the manufacturing spectrum, is the absence of a repair service. It fails outside of warranty, you have a really expensive, toxic boat anchor. The electronics, the circuit board, the complexity is the weak point, no one offers a repair service, in house or independent. That needs to change. If you sell it, you need to be able to offer a repair service. Check it out, I'll be happy to be wrong.

    When making concrete pads, or battery bunkers etc you should look at using plastic fibre reinforcement. One version is called emesh. It will span well so good for a vented fire box for your batteries. And the mesh comes in a bag so are very easy to transport.

    You probably already know this, but you have to smother lithium battery fires, water will make it worse. A good idea for a fire protection system for the lithium battery would be to place a bag(s) (plastic) of sand above the battery. So that that if there is a fire the plastic bag will melt, releasing the sand smother the fire.

    In this case DC lighting is uber simple ; simply replace the ac bulbs in all lamps and fixtures with dc bulbs( they're only a few bux apiece) and then connect their power circuits to the mppt as the ac wiring,of that what is already ran will work just as well for DC power.. I used my houses modern upgraded AC wiring as my DC wiring without changing a thing other than bulbs,fans and appliances to DC type.. It's like overkill wiring for DC usage without the costs of rewiring the entire 2000 sq ft house ,and it's worked well the past 8+ years that way..

    • @johnkaprese36
      @johnkaprese36 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Disclamer: I'm not an electrician. However, what I've learned is that DC in this case runs typically with 12 or 24V while AC 120-240V depending where you live. With lower volts you have higher Amps to get the same power. So, if you have DC with low voltage but high amperage, you need thicker cables than with high voltage and lower amperage. If you use too thin cables for high amps, they will get hot and eventually burn down your house. The length of the cable also plays a role here. What I want to say: Be careful.

    .
    A word to the advertising:
    Good to see some of the corporate support usually going to the louder, flashy- or T&A-content creators finding its way to more credible channels actually worth that support. I hope emphasizing the improvement it undoubtedly actually was isn't the only thing You agreed upon - I recently saw another of the credible ones using free ecoflow equipment particularly stating that he was actually demanding payment by the ecoflow people for them using his half a million very tech-affine followers as a target group .... and how he agreed on using their stuff on camera first and foremost because it basically was a more professional, more mobile version of what he already had built on a shoestring from stuff off junkyards and gumboot-bargains himself shortly before - no emphasizing, none of the usual "advertising" seen so annoyingly often by "influencers", just a plain showing what the ecoflow stuff can do when used heavily in comparison to his own build. Which was impressive, to say the least.
    Absolutely best advertising ecoflow could possibly have bought .... I am actually considering a compact mobile ecoflow system for RV-ing and yachting, I forwarded that other TH-camr's vid to more than one person being in need of serious power for machinery and creature comforts in off grid situations, (did forward Your washing-machine turbine series to various people too over the years, just saying) and now I am being even more drawn to ecoflow products/systems by Marty Angryram T. getting and using their stuff.

    Here in Europe, I bought (EXTRON X3360) Fire Extinguishing Granules for Lithium batteries, in 5l bags. Better than water.

    JFC......7k USD for whats basically a charge controller, 4k inverter, and a breaker box. No panels and a 5Kwh battery. I guess if you have zero clue on solar and have money to burn this is a good deal. Will Prowse would tear this apart and laugh at it.

    That’s quite nice. To be clear, you should not worry about LFP batteries, now if it’s a NCM lithium battery, I would be really concerned, as those things are pretty dangerous.

    Nice Vid Marty, always good to have enough for life lil luxuries like a Microwave, toaster and kettle!
    I have 6.5kw grid feed and 2kw older panels and im about to expand this with grid as backup and 10kw of Gel batteries plus of course a new better suits Inverter so I can grid isolate if needed because my last from outages were 5 and 6 days respectively planning on 10kw solar and 15kw storage with diesel genset emergency backup.
    As it sits I use a few bucks plus connection fee per day as my solar covers daylight feed so its nice to see a good overview of a new system.
    Love your work :-)

  • @Agnemons

    It depends on the chemistry of the battery. If it is Lithium Ion then fire risk is low. If it is LiFEPO4 or Lithium Iron Phosphate the risk is extremely low. Puncturing a cell can cause issues with Li ion but the most probable cause of fires in Li ion batteries is thermal runaway from excessive heat. Once that happens the only way to put it out is to cool it enough to stop the chemical reaction.

    Good of Ecoflow to help out, it's surprising how much a simple thing like having off grid power, can give so much joy. From boiling a kettle to playing racing car game with the kids. Not sure though if the second thing was for you or the kids though. 🤗

    That eco flow would be great for my little caravan .I live in a 14 foot van off grid with 3 solar panels and 3 car batteries. It’s not the best but living on a disability pension only I don’t have any spare money. This would be a perfect gift. If anyone would like to support me. Kindest regards Andy. Perth Australia

    Suggestion - consult your local Fire Service people about using water, or not, to quell a Lithium battery fire - should one occur. All sorts of rumours abound, so facts from FENZ would help - a lot!

    Lithium is highly inflammatory
    Fires are caused by to deep of discharge
    Then when charged again dendrites are formed.
    This is like an ICE pick thrust though the battery
    The battery is simular to a jelly roll
    So the dendrits poke though all the layers shorting them out
    Recommend moving the low voltage cut off higher then normal. When gone .
    That way draining the battery will stop before damage is done

    If using LiFe batteries they are inherently safe from fire compared to LiPo which are the ones making the headlines. No need for a bunker - check Will Prowses latest video on the subject

    Good job mate the wife and kids are definitely happy, happy wife happy life 😊 and good job on finishing it of with that concrete batter fire bunker we in the Rc hobby use ammo cans with the seal removed or money lock bockes to charge our lipos a few of my friends have had them go up there was a guy that burn half his house out with a lipo fire luckily it was just cosmetic but still better to be safe than sorry wonder if ur could rig up a foam or co2 fire extinguisher to a sprinkler head so when there is a fire the head activates using the foam or co2 🤔 have similar styles on race engines and other machines

    The Lithium Phosphate batteries appear to be safe so far, it is the Lithium nickel cobalt batteries that are catching on fire. These are used in most EVs until recently because they are more energy dense, including Tesla, Hyundai etc.

    • @twistedthrottle8513
      @twistedthrottle8513 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      correct he dont need to build a fire box for them , he just needs to keep them at 24c , he may need heat mats in NZ winter but to achieve this or damage them if the controller allows low temp cell charging

      Lithium IRON phosphate. STOP HANDING OUT BAD ADVICE!!!! IRON PHOSPHATE BATTERIES CAN WILL AND DO BURN DOWN!!! The EV nerds who do not know JACK SHIT are fucking dangerous as hell. ALL Lithium Batteries ARE Lithium Phosphate. Its the middle element that determines what kind of reaction you get. Lithium cobalt PHOSPHATE. lithium iron PHOSPHATE. You dumb fucks need to SHUSH.

    • @Autunite
      @Autunite ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed, LiFePo4 batteries are generally safe and well suited for these applications. Li-Ion and Li-Po batteries are more energy dense and less stable than LiFePo4, but can deliver more amperage for more power.

  • @SMGJohn
    @SMGJohn ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I will never understand people who put massive lithium batteries in their ceiling to store solar energy, stuff like this need to be placed in its own shed that can withstand up to 3000 degrees of heat these monsters output, not only do they burn for days on end, they emit extremely toxic gas that can kill within minutes in an enclosed space.
    A 5kW battery like that can easily melt bricks and putting it under the house is probably a bad idea, I suggest moving it away from the house by a few metres at least or put a massive shielding on top of it as 3000 degrees of heat, the battery could catch fire, burn for days when you are not there and the heat alone can cause house to catch fire.
