When Odin calls Thor's sons useless and starts praising Baldur, the way Thor turns his head is brilliant. It shows the pain he feels but has to supress because of Odin. Thor's character was a superb achievement of this game.

Thor should've teamed up with kratos and take him down. But... He was tired and exhausted.. just like sutr. He couldn't live up to anyone's expectations and left everyone disappointed. He couldn't get what he wanted... His life was miserable.

He wasn't really even praising Baldur either. He see's his sons as tools to be used. Baldur to Odin had "value" "uses". Baldur was his tracker and Thor was his killer. They both were desperate for their Fathers attention and love, something they never got.

I get the impression from their first meeting with Thor, that Thor had quit drinking for some time, probably with the help from his wife and daughter. He doesn't drink the mead, even when Odin puts the cup right in front of him prompting him to do so, and telling him he's no fun anymore. So it was really heartbreaking to me when Thrud found him drunk in the tavern.

"What is this?! Are you broken?!"
Just goes to show that Odin looked at his own son as nothing more than a toy he could throw at whoever he hated. The lack of hesitation he has when killing Thor is pure psychopathic; Thor's refusal was a direct insult to Odin's obsessive aspect of control, and with that insult, Odin instantly chose death.

When Thor was finally convinced by Kratos, it isn't noticeable but you can see him nodding ever so slightly to him and agreeing that they should be better people and become more than just destroyers but at that EXACT MOMENT you immediately hear Odin coming with his teleporting Ravens and talking Thor down. It's like he sensed that his son was about to switch sides and immediately tried to get him back but when Thor finally made his decision to stand up to him, he killed him.
He even blames Atreus and Kratos for his own actions like he doesn't want to feel guilty or can't comprehend that he killed his own son. He only sees people close to him as expendable and doesn't take responsibility once he 'disposes' of them and he uses his friendly looking charisma to lure in people that might be of use to him

I said it once and i will say it again, i really prefer this rendition of the Aesir, and specifically Thor, to Marvel's.
In this one you can really understand that nordic culture, despite it's beauty and greatness, is not flashy, a point Heimdall affirms in this game, and has a lot of sadness, violence and trauma.
That is also a feeling you can get by playing Hellblade.

Marvel's Aesir (meaning Marvel Comics, not the butchering done by the MCU) are also explorativie of the pagan origins of Thor. Such as one story where Thor is on Earth during the Viking Age and he witnesses how pagans kill innocents in the name of Norse Gods and that terrifies him, and he asks Odin to let him show those barbarians the fault of their ways, but Odin says that they have to figure it out themselves.

    • @aurabender150
      @aurabender150 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@antona.8659 Ok, that comment about "butchering done by the MCU" feels disingenuous to me because it's partly not entirely the studio's fault. The whole point of making MCU Thor more comedic after Age of Ultron (his last mostly serious appearance that's not Infinity War) was because people didn't connect with this version of him and his films weren't that well received (look at Thor: The Dark World). That's the whole point of his character shift starting from Ragnarok onwards. And let's not forget people loved that change in that film.
BTW, explanation doesn't equal justification. Do I think they took it too far? Yes, but I think it's unfair to place all the blame on Marvel.
I just want to enjoy both interpretations of this character without needlessly dunking on one to gas up another.

Well, see? It's their fault for assuming too much without thinking first. Thor The Dark World didn't connect because it was dull and boring. Being serious has nothing to do with it, as it wasn't that either. 4. I don't care what's the point of that. The point is that it has no point and makes no sense. It character assassinated Thor, made him an idiot, killed his best friends for comedy and never had him reflect on that, and botched the whole story of Asgard, on top of being a mess which makes no sense.

That whole "You seem like a calm and reasonable person" line felt like a threat from a mafia enforcer the first time I saw it, but now reads more like someone trying to relate through trauma and not being able to fully admit it.
I was fully ready to hate Thor as the murderous psychopath he was made out to be in the previous game, but now I just see him as an earlier version of Kratos. What a brilliant tragedy.

I wanted to see him grow. To take a similar path of growth that Kratos did. Which is exactly why his death pissed me off so much. We barely get any time to see him in the game and now we'll probably never get anything more from him. It's such a waste of what could've likely been a really good character. Honestly, I'd even go so far as to say he could've had his own DLC or game series. It just sucks. Narrative wise, his death makes sense but that still doesn't mean I have to like it. I want Thor back. And I want Ryan Hurst to voice him.

Noticing his first scene, where he "brings mead" and doesnt drink any of it, but still smells it, rubs it into Mjolnir, was really subtle forward thinking writing.
Also Odin picking the cup down and slamming it down in front of him as if to say "Drink it" and telling him "youre no fun anymore".
Just the sheer lengths of his abuse to Thor, that actvely encouraged his drinking and reckless behaviour as "entertainment" to him.

I did not expect that the death which would bring me the most sadness would be Thor of all people.
In all reality he was just an incredibly powerful but altogether simple man. All he had desired was a loving family, a good drink, a good brawl, but first and foremost, the approval of his father. It just so happened his father was a horrid, manipulative, demeaning, genocidal maniac who wished only for a hammer to crush his enemies, not a son.
So through his pursuit to gain this approval he watched himself slowly commit increasingly brutal atrocities to the point where, from fear of persecution, he began to try and force himself to believe he enjoyed what he was commanded to do. Then when the shame became too much to bear, binge drinking was his curative. A level of alcoholism that only brought him more shame by estranging him from his family and leading him to spill more innocent blood.
Truly a tragic and ironic life in the worst of ways. Due to the nature of all the ways he attempted to cope with the vile deeds he committed in the name of his father he then lost everything else that mattered to him: his enjoyment of drinking, his love of battle, the love and health of his family, and most tragically, he never gained the admiration or love of his father anyway as Odin simply had none to give. Thor was on the brink of redemption when he finally denied his father's wishes, but instead it was cruelly taken from him, forcing him to remain forever in the memories of others as a brutal, merciless, and foolish monster. He could've changed.

    • @jeberdelgadillo6189
      @jeberdelgadillo6189 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Yeah, I was... Really hoping he wouldn't die because he could've really changed. That moment when he finally accepts that he doesn't have to remain a monster, a destroyer, it hit hard because then and there he had decided that he would walk the a new path, for his family. Just to be killed beforehand. Man, sometimes I wish things could've been different.

    • @TheEtherealAlchemist

I've personally come to believe that when he dies, he passes into Valhalla. Thor died fighting the toughest battle of his life: saying "No" to his father and standing up to him once and for all.
Part of why I believe this is for a few reasons:
      1) the God of War games play fast and loose with established mythologies, and it's implied that the only reason those who die in battle are worthy of Valhalla is because it's a carefully crafted narrative Odin concocted -- from the Path of the Traveler to the Einherjar codex -- all so he could get a bigger and better army.
      2) In 2018 God of War, Mimir notes that the gods have their own way of getting to Valhalla and don't rely on the Valkyries.
      3) Even so, the Valkyries are able to escort "the worthy", and they did so with the living in Asgard to Midgard (which is decidedly not their purview, but within their ability). So why couldn't they escort someone like Thor to Valhalla despite not dying in a literal battle?
      4) Freya even notes that despite the destruction of Asgard, Valhalla exists both "in and out of Asgard", and that it continues to exist in the post game. A few dialogue entries indicate that the Einherjar will die and return to Valhalla.
      5) It also keeps the tears at bay.
I do feel like killing him was a waste (the overall intention of Odin striking Thor in front of Thrud would still have worked if he was alive), but damn if it didn't still hurt.

100% agreed. There's a unique pain in watching a flawed character cut down on the path to their redemption. For what it's worth Thor was a born a slave to the bond he tried to create with his father, and he was exploited as a tool both physically and emotionally to the point of him becoming numb to virtually everything else in his life. Thor lived a joyless life as a result, and before he could even begin to look somewhere else for that joy he was executed. He symbolizes just how fucked up of a person Odin was, and they wrote it all so beautifully.

Am I the only one disappointed by Thor's lack of presence and screen-time? With how the first game ended with the most badass cliffhangers of all time with Thor literally turning up to your doorstep and how much he was hyped in Mimir's stories and Ragnarok's marketing, I was very underwhelmed with the Thor we got in this game. He wasn't even much of an antagonist in the game as much as I would like with Thor being overshadowed by Odin. Baldur on the other hand had a constant presence in the first game with him constantly following you and having multiple fights with him. Aside from the first and last fight with Thor, he really didn't do much of anything. I think if you removed Thor in this game, the story would've still function as normal and I don't quite like that. He should've had much more a presence than just being a spectacle. Yeah there were emotional moments with him but they could've given him way more.

    • @MasterFaust

Only issue is Thor is meant to be an intimidating and hype boss fight. In the first battle he literally kills you and constantly regenerates health to show you he means business, unlike Baldur who was more of a persistent nuisance. Having thor constantly fight you would kinda ruin the hype of fighting again which is what makes the rematch so fun; you fight the first true boss again at the finale to prove you improved over the course of the game

Hes supposed to be big and masculine, and they chose to portray him as a balding skinny little man.
Odin himself was a warrior and a magician.
Thor shouldve been a little angrier, and had way more screen time.
