Driving a piece of shit sometimes shows frugality in the owner. Alot of times I'll see pretty regular cars sitting in front of multi million dollar houses (and on the flip side, fairly expensive cars in moderately priced apartment complexes)
@@John-yg2rt You hit the nail on the head. There really is different comfort levels when it comes to debt load, or interest in cars period. I have neighbors with expensive, or modest cars in their driveways. You just never know someone's circumstances and/or how much they are willing to spend, to buy/lease a vehicle. I am risk averse myself, so I prefer buying a modest car outright even though I can afford a much more expensive vehicle. I sometimes wish I would ease up a bit on buying a nicer vehicle, but it's likely my upbringing and frugal nature and the fact that I hate overly expensive repairs/maintenance.
Rob, how much did it cost your client to rent this car for 30 days? Obviously you would not purchase a car like that to only make $10k after depreciation and selling the car to get your money out.
Do people with $280K to spend on a car actually think to themselves “maybe I should be economical and go with the preowned rental Rolls”. Does another business venture pick it up? Or does the rich guy buying it not give a flying f*ck. And he was going treat/appreciate whichever luxury car it was exactly the same.
With exotics the "used" aspect of a car carries a lot less stigma, not least because 300k cars tend to be so well cared for it still looks like "a million bucks" after several years. Rolls Royce are the exception actually in that they do fall off a cliff in value but new rolls also take FOREVER if you want to custom order one. If this is the right color with the right options at the right price, it's actually BETTER than new cause it won't take 6-9 months for the factory to stamp one out for ya.
@Chris A. .. Wait,,, you haven't seen the RR umbrella,,,ha,ha,ha. .. See this cat? .. It's offered at $1 million USD dollars. .. I'll miss that cat ......
"its cause the car is so heavy it chews through tires" yup thats how tires work. my 3/4 ton suburban must weigh alot less than a rolls 😂😂 something was driven harder than advertised.
Its amazing what floor mats and an umbrella for this car cost. do the materials they are made from cost that much more to justify the price or is it the RR tax.
Brabus 1Up i think it costs enough to rent that it may have been worth the loss of value, at least maybe he thought so. Or was maybe a very loyal repeat customer he wanted to do a favor for that didn’t cost him much since he has better connections for buying/selling. Not sure really, I’ve heard of people doing this kinda thing multiple times. Still not sure how it all works out but apparently sometimes, in some cases it can make sense Edit: additionally, when you rent cars you have a limit on how far you can drive. So the cost of 1 month rental is probably doubled after he pays for the ability to drive it that many miles. Driving it that many miles in 5 days probably costs more than a month long rental where you just drive it around casually to work and dinner.
He probably pulled in around $30k/month in revenue from the car if it was rented out to the same guy over that period of time. He probably bought it for around $320,000. If he sells it for $280,000 that's only a $10,000 loss if it was only around one month. That loss is a tax write off. If he bought it for a specific customer that guy will probably never rent from someone else and bring in more clients for Rob so I would say that loss is pretty cheap marketing - even after making repairs to the vehicle. It also frees up capital to be used to purchase cars that work better for the upcoming season - allowing Rob more opportunities to rent more cars and make more money. I would say it makes pretty good sense business wise.
Clearly it did or he wouldn't do it, guessing he made an assload of money off of it. He also has another guy that comes to the Hamptons every year and he buys a car just to rent to him for a month or two and sell it. Guessing he rented it out for $40,000 to $50,000 for the month, maybe more.
Some of those parts costs he mentioned are indeed mind-blowing, but it seems they are all parts that are RR-specific and VISIBLE. The parts you don't see - and touch - under the hood are often shared and cost at lot less if you know how to cross-reference. Like the ignition coils are shared with the 3-series BMW. So you can get ripped off by a BMW dealer, still painful, but a lot less so than a RR dealer shafting.
jd rancho these are generic parts, where other automakers would use parts from third party suppliers RR use BMW parts. It’s the same with Lamborghini, Bugatti and Bentley sone parts don’t need their own badge just because the car costs more.
How can you lose the umbrella or dont know who took it? Dont your guys check the car once its handed back in , go thru everything and to see anything is missing, like engine or doors or umbrella? and charge the person?
Lumixster G he said it wasn’t the guy who rented it so he did check it over. It probably disappeared after sitting around for the past few weeks at cosmos or wherever it was.
$20,000 of depreciation is not bad at all, the biggest costs seem like the repairs. You got another 10-15+k in repairs and cleaning to the car between the windshield, floor mats, umbrella, and new tires. But most likely if you rented someone a Rolls Royce for a month to drive cross country in it you probably charged him more then that amount plus the other rentals you had. You definitely did good on this car
He'll break even. If you're spending almost 300k on a car you want it mint. 15k miles on one of these IMO brings the value down at least 30-40k (a lot of miles for one of these) + add the 10k in repairs. The fact he's trying to pass this for 280k is crazy.
@@Jeremy-vw1ib Its not super crazy if you look right now there are a few 2016-17 RR dawns on the market with similar miles between 10-20k miles and they are selling for $275-290k. Most of the lower mileage cars are selling for $320-340k. Most likely Rob got a decently good deal on the car originally and is selling it for its regular price. When he said it depreciated really hard he was likely talking about its original MSRP which is about $400k, so within 2-3 years it lost over $100k in value. Keep in mind that he would rent out this car for $5k for a long weekend or about $1,100 a day during the week. The guy renting it for the long trip likely paid somewhere in the range of 40-50k if not more, and if he rented it out 5-10 other times he would have at least another 10-20k in revenue (assuming he only rented it out on its lowest rate, they also have a 2 day minimum). Most likely it was rented out a bit more then 5-10 times and the guy who rented it for a month likely paid 40-50k if not more. Plus it is still under warranty so there should have been no other repair bills, so the only maintenance would be oil changes, new tires, new windshield, and replacing the missing floor mat and umbrella. The car will likely take a steeper dive in value in the next 1-2 years do to the warranty lapsing so its probably a very good time to sell it. It would not shock me one bit if he bought another one in the next year or so.

My RR dealer is in Houston. The mechanic told me the cars leave Goodwood, England with a standard wheel alignment. The dealer is responsible for final wheel alignment before delivery. A softer compound tire rides better, but also wears out faster. A harder compound tire rides worse but lasts longer.
