HOW TO PLAY DOOM METAL - Episode 3: Drone Doom (Tutorial)

- Hey folks,
as promised last time, today we're spending some time to examine how long we can make the space between two notes.
Drone Doom is really an extreme genre, it polarizes even the most avid metalhead or doomstress and will certainly give you massive street cred with the local fixie riding hipster community.
But at the same time these elements that define drone doom are now also found in jazz recordings (see Nils Petter Molvaer for example).
So I think it's only fair to take a closer look at what makes something drone and how we can achieve that.
Could you implent drone ideas into other genres of music?
I certainly think heavy modern doom bands such as Conan have shifted towards a drone-y sound and one could perhaps make the argument that every use of feedback everywhere is basically implementing parts of drone doom into other settings.

I love Drone Metal because it's scary stuff, and it's also easy to play, and like other styles of Doom Metal it goes nicely with everything

Been getting into drone lately. Your video inspired me to start playing around on my Helix with drone tones. I can see this opening up hours and hours of tweaking the signal chain, trying different guitars/basses. Endless fun. Thanks for this!

I call my own music "drone doom", but it really isn't. It's much closer to classic doom, but slowed down quite it bit, and I still like to use drums and percussion to add a bit more. Your explanation and playing really define the "drone" much better. And now I have to check out Nils Petter Molvaer.
It's a tricky thing... how slow is a glacial shift? Also: if it's not distorted, is it automatically ambient?
All this genre border defining stuff is really tricky. But yes, do check out NPMs newer stuff on okay records.

Great tutorial, but about using drums with drone doom.... have you heard of Bong? They make drums work very well with this style of music.
Very informative, learned some more about Drone Doom, which I recently got into and have embraced it fully. I noticed you mentioned using an octave pedal on the bass side of the sound, I use the Does It Doom octave pedal, but its more of a hyper octave. I have a Boss OC3 Octave pedal that I rarely use, maybe I can use it now when playing Drone. What settings should I set the OC3 to in order to get that full drone sound?

Funny, I use an octave up on my downtuned bass, to blend in that kind of guitar-like sound, added to all those low bass frequencies.
Nice! That's what Death From Above 1979 and Royal Blood do for rock music as well.
I think you get nicer transients and more precise low-end that way.
The octave down version seems to have a sort of built-in smudge tool, which works for drone/ambient tones, but doesn't really work for anything else.
Funny how much noise the Rat gives, when not playing, but it does have this kind of (semi)transparency, when hitting single notes...
But when you hook up a Rat with a fuzz (In my case an old big Big Muff, tone at 0), it sounds like the building's falling apart. 🤣

Great tutorial \m/ The first one, which is a normal and interesting video about this specific genre and not only a stupid comedy video.
I have a question and i don't know if you are also playing or "writing" drone doom songs or if you know some guys in this genres but my question is about the time length.
If we choose the debut album from the band KHANATE, than the song "Under Rotting Sky" is over 18 minutes long and the track "No Joy" only 11 minutes.
How do you know, when to finish the song. I mean if you have no strict rules or songstructures, than you can hypothetically play a song for 2 hours.
Maybe you write some songs in this style and know, when to finish the song and choose a different time lenght without playing the song for hours.

I believe the answer to this is rather complex. I suppose I just escalated the music to a climax and then tore it back down. Give me a few days and maybe I'll have thought of a better answer.
In the meantime my drone/ambient band WilleZurMacht did some collabs with Russian post rockers IWKC, maybe that's something you're interested in.

What scales are good for Drone Doom? Scales like the locrian or phrygian scale and some more spezific ones, like the harmonic minor scale?

None of these tones matter without the cabinets and tubes to provide the live experience. It's about the vibrations at huge volume.

Hey Se Se, I'm using a headrush gigboard. On it I emulate a Rat Pedal, a Muff on the bass side and some Overdrive in front.

Any recommendations for a good and reasonably priced fuzz? I looked at some pedals recommended by other channels like "does it doom?", but they often cost as much as my whole amp.
I personally love the zvex fuzzfactory and the russian bug muff, though these are more mid-priced pedals I'd say. More affordable options I'd try would include the EHX Satisfaction fuzz (it's a very particular sound though) or the little big muff. Both should be around 50£/€/$. The other option, if you're up for some soldering, is getting a clone of a fuzzfactory as a diy kit and build one. It's really not all that difficult and kits run anywhere from 20$/€/£ to 60$/£/€. Also try reverb or Craigslist for secondhand pedals.

This is what happens when I turn on my Hizumitas. Sounds phenomenal but JESUS does it make a quiet amp yell.
Also, I think it’s important for fledgling doom guitarists to see just how noisy the tones can be before you start laying down some thick riffs.

I really dig your take on all of this, but your overall understanding is honestly just a bit subjective. Your tone however, is right on the money. I give it three "Hail Sagans" out of five : )

Got schematics?
I based it off a fuzzfactory, but tried a few different germanium transistors until I found the ones that sounded the closest to what I had in mind.
So pretty much google for a fuzzfactory schematic. Hope that helped

I use a Rat, and different fuzzes, and a Laney pre-amp. With reverbs both before and after dirt pedals.
My main "go to", nowadays...
Caline Snakebite, Mooer Blues Mood, Rat2, Big Muff (NYC or Russian), Behringer Bass EQ, Behringer Reverb Machine, Ibanez DE7.
What pedals are you using
I use a Headrush gigboard and a germanium fuzz I built a while back.
