Backing Tracks - What do they do? Are laptops the death of live music? (Sleep Token Debate)
UUUUGGGH It seems like every year some boomer finds out that technology exists and that people use it. It's almost tiring, so I made a video showing you what our backing tracks do exactly and we're also talking a bit about sleep token and on cancelling shows vs replacing sick band members with tracks.

Do Guitar Picks Make A Difference To Your Tone?
For me and probably a lot of other people. There are some towns where you just cannot find the musicians, or the right ones, or any at all. In those cases. Where its people wanting to be creative and perform live, but maybe cannot because they do not have a full band. Do some shows HOWEVER you want or can.Proving your desire to play live will intrigue someone and get you live musicians faster, imo. But if your heart needs to do it. Go up on stage solo with all backing tracks for all I care. Sometimes the passion and desire outweights the local availability of musicians. For bands that are short a member, had one leave, or is sick. I think it really depends on the band. Small bands can get away with it. But If I was going to see Slayer and there was no drummer. I want my F-ing money back. But if I spent 20$ on a ticket and enjoed most of the bands and 1 band was missing a bassist/guitarist I have most likely never heard of before. Its not some huge expectation I was let down on.
I agree with their decision to continue the show with tracks. Shows their commitment to the fans to give it their best than to give nothing at all! I mean, the technology is there like you said. I'm sure the fans who were waiting months for these shows were appreciative for the experience!
100% agree
No way I’m watching a zero cut 20 minute video of someone complaining about backing tracks.
Lol he wasn't complaining numb nuts
I'm doing exactly the opposite though. I'm explaining what tracks can and can't do and also, that I personally think that ST should play shows with tracks instead of canceling. Maybe listen instead of judging beforehand?
@ I’m noticing this is a trend in the comments. Maybe it says something about how long you take to get to the point? I would consider writing a script next time and making your point more clear sooner. This video could be half this length if you script it. Trim the fat, get to the point faster.
Bruv, there's literally a summary in the first 20 seconds.
@@NicolasPerrault Sir you cannot expect kids to pay attention past 10 seconds. Its easier to shit post than to use word comprehension and infer information from mouth noises. I enjoyed the video. You make some similar points I have made to a few friends as well.
yeah they are replacing live guitar with tracks when someone cant play bcs guitarist and bass player are "only tour guys" ...every track u heard from sleep token is work of II the drumer and primary vessel, hes creating and recording vocals, guitar, bass, keys and production so i think it is not a big problem here
Same. Also, as mentioned they're not using studio tracks, but actual live one-take versions from previous shows, so you are getting sonically the same thing.
Critiquing a band who has touring BACKUP SINGERS and were committed to not cancelling a show, when every other band samples 90 percent of the set....
I'm not critiquing them though. This comment just shows you didn't listen.
Hello. I need your advice . I started to learn guitar like year ago, my teachers make me practice diatonic and arpeggios of triads , jazz chords… it’s ok to understand music, but it’s far from doom metal or dark drone ambient. Can you give me advice pls, what theory should I learn to write and improvise in this genres like stoner , doom metal, etc. I know pentatonic , but don’t know what chords play, only like quint chords
Hey! I also learned with an old jazz dude, but really all you need is basic pentatonic and blues scales. If you want it to sound a bit darker, go harmonic minor. If you want to get started, try to keep it as simple as possible. 3 to 4 notes per riff is fine. Power Chords are one thing, but especially in Stoner Rock more often than not they are just open root-fifth or an open e string and a note on the a string. Hope that helps!
🤘
Beautiful!! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Start riff kinda reminded me of lateralus by Tool. Was that the kinda 😉😉 hint take the Micky out of it. I’ve liked stoner rock for a while and didn’t even realise. I recently got into a band called Red Sun Atacama and I’ve always liked Queens of the Stone Age. Then did a bit of reading and stoner rock desert rock came up. I love the sound, I think the reason that it is popular isn’t because it’s easy to replicate. I think the reason that it is popular is because it sounds fucking awesome. 🤘
It's always easy to bob your head to it - I think that‘s always going to be a good indicator of potential popularity.

Round wound every day.
Did u cover on tunings for post rock?
I do have one video on alternate tunings for ambient music, that might suit you. Whenever I'd play post rock I usually like it mildly down-tuned, so like C# standard or smth. But really any tuning can work.
Learn the blues scale, downtune your guitar, buy or build a fuzz pedal (preferably a RAT or a Muff). Dress a bit goth or wear a black wife beater and jeans, but no trainers, always shoes or boots, they must be black or brown, no red or white boots, you mite get away with purple or blue, the footwear etiquette is very important, if your turn up in pink sketchers - your not Doom.
Ah, but I wear pink shoes all the time... maybe that's why I mostly play Death Metal these days 🤔 😅
well done sir! solid overview and breakdown. if i may recommend the movie "Mandy" and score by Jóhann Jóhannsson its perfect balance of groovy psychedelic LSD love and heavy evil tones/themes.
Mandy is definitely on my list. Jóhannsson is fantastic at composing moody score.
@@NicolasPerrault excellent! pick a good night to watch maybe some stimulant's to aid in the experience? the "mandy love theme" haunts me. stephen o'malley also participated specifically on "temple" which features slow punctuated drums like you mentioned in the video. also if i may "the devils candy" movie is great and features stephen o'malley on guitar. the antagonist in the story also plays heavy de tuned guitar. "i have to play it loud so i dont hear him"
Thanks i love u man
Glad I could help
@@NicolasPerrault 🤘🏻 new subs
god damn tool lateralus vibes on that first riff
I throw a 9 on top of the mammoth set and its perfect for 7 string
DOOMMETAL FOREVER!!!! huge into instrumental Funeral Doom here, but i have been accused of sounding like DRONE at times haha XD
As a drummer with extremely non prolific guitarists your videos have been super helpful for me to learn enough to write riffs myself. Thank you ❤
Thanks! Glad you got something out of this
I don't play or sing, but i love it.
Thanks!
Dude your patch sounds so great here!!
Thanks!
Tuning DO ... slow tempo ... sorrow ... guttural voice ... heavy disto ... and dépressive soul ! Go for Nortt, Shape Of Despair, Abyssmal Sorrow ...
Nortt and abysmal sorrow are more Depressive Black/Funeral Doom I absolutely love those bands...
Dudes sick widdit!✌️
Im all about chemical mineral music
Great composition at the end
Nice demo of the little Laney. Enjoyed the playing too!
Thanks mate!
Great tutorial, but about using drums with drone doom.... have you heard of Bong? They make drums work very well with this style of music.
Very well played and awesome sound my dear friend!!🎸cool guitar!
Thanks mate! I can't not play my one Baritone axe when I'm chugging on Drop A# Riffs
I find it very amusing and inspiring how Tony Iommi invented one of the heaviest genres in rock music using the lightest strings available back then (even for today's "standards"). It throws all the dumb string gauge mysticism out of the window and I f'n love it.
You look like Aldo the tiktoker
Signal chain?
Refer to minutes 2-5. I explain everything there
The song reminds me of Truckfighters a bit.
Love Truckfighters!
I love it, all the way until you get to about G. Then, it kind of starts sounding muddy. Even on my 8. I dont really down tune it too far. For the sake of the top strings. If you look up "Internal Darkness by shrine of Malice" Theres a guitar cover on that song and it's literally just in standard tuning. Except for the top two strings. The 7th is in A and the 8th string is in E. Sounds brutal as shit. I almost think it is a matter of preference, feel, and a few other things. But, as far as down tuning to sound heavy. I think it's just a matter of how you utilize your instrument. Each tuning definitely does add its own spice to the mix though.
I have an 8 string that I rarely play bc I really haven't found a good use for it yet. Somehow low-tuned 6 strings are just more my vibe, I guess.
@@NicolasPerrault I totally get that. Low tuned 6 strings are bad ass. I do most of my playing on an 8 string. But, weirdly I barely even touch the top strings while playing. I think I almost just like the feel of them more. The size of the fret board in general. I like to play more melodic, harmonic soloy stuff. I feel cured. Everytime I try to groove like you, it sounds like horse shit. Lol.
Youre bad ass man. Ive been watching your tutorial videos the last couple days. Now this. I really enjoy your content. If i can learn to play like this. Id be happy.
Thanks a bunch!
What pedals do you use ?
A headrush gigboard
Exactly what I was looking for, thanks
Thanks! Glad I could help!
Great stuff Man. Very thoughtful. Feedback. Check out The song Anthrax on Gang of Four's first album. Andy Gill's playing was genius. Still gets my adrenaline pumping.
Thanks! That intro alone is just a masterpiece of noise, love it!
I love Drone Metal because it's scary stuff, and it's also easy to play, and like other styles of Doom Metal it goes nicely with everything
Just sent this vid to my gutair player hes got work to do ... great vid

just discovered this channel, well done!!! Really entertaining!! Enjoyable AND great instruction!!
Thanks! Sometimes I also make videos 😅
Just such fun to watch!! Really entertaining!!!And so informative!!
what is written on the flag to the left in the background? thx
It translates to "an injury to one is an injury to all". It's a IWW flag.
@@NicolasPerrault thank you very much, Nicolas, appreciate your feedback and all the effort you put into this marvellous channel ❤
Thanks!
I dont know anything about guitars or technique but i know that i love fuzzy riffs.
Thank you so much for your work. Truly inspiring. Can i ask where i can find an "evo" (not sure if i got it correctly) ?
Ebow. Thomann definitely carries them. These things might not be super versatile, but man are the fun
@@NicolasPerrault Thanks so much for the quick response. It sures sound so fun, I'm eager to try it !
Thats really cool. Thank you!
Thanks !
where's the black metal video? lol great tutorial. gonna try this stuff out.
I have one... it's just hella old. Gotta remake that...
dope vid! learned a lot
❤
Nice one, man. What is typical drum bpm in stoner rock?
That's a tough one. There's "fast" and slow. I'd say for a fast track try anything between 120 and 140, and for a slow track between 80 and 100. Now there are also suuuuuper slow tracks, that border on drone and some mid-tempo ones, but I feel these are good starting points.
@@NicolasPerraultthank you!will try
