I'm blessed and cursed with acres of the brambles. Keeps me busy just making paths accessible. I swear, some days they grow about a foot. However, cutting the new growth back, but not to the ground, will encourage the remaining stem to fruit profusely the next year. A delicious way to preserve the berries raw for at least a year is to make a "shrub", a kind of cordial. You can make it with many types of fruit. One part each of three ingredients by volume: crushed fruit, sugar, apple cider vinegar. I have done it with less sugar, and it still worked. Leave the mix to soak for a week, a month or two or three in a covered jar just to keep the dust out. The vinegar and suguar will kill anything. I've left it almost a year with no problem, as I still had some shrub from a previous year in use. Strain and bottle. To use, add about 10 parts water to one part concentrate, or to tast. It really is very concentrated. Makes a lovely drink when using hot water and adding some orange peel, ginger, cloves and cinamon for a mulled wine type of flavour. If drunk cold it's really nice with carbonated water. Or cheat with a tiny bit of baking soda and citric acid for an instant fizz. I can attest to the sheep danger. Had to free my neighbour's sheep that was on the verge of strangling itself inside a noose of bramble canes. The more it struggled, the tighter it wound the canes around it's neck, which was already pinned to the ground. Thankfully I had a pocket knife. A few more minutes and it would have been dead. I could barely get the knife under the cane. Happened a couple of times, though the other time the sheep was not as badly entangled. Lately I've collected cleaver seeds which are now turning brown here. With sun forecast for the next few days I can roast them in my solar oven to try that coffee you mentioned in a previous video.
@@amcken my neighbour's field is about 500 yards from my house, so I don't really notice any insect problem. However, my old cat, who never ventured far, and never had any ticks, started to go down the field one day and promptly picked up a tick. A friend of mine who was a professional shepherd at one time said, if you put sheep in the field, there will be ticks. When the neighbor put horses in the field I certainly noticed the increase in horse flies going down the track.

Your video made me smile. I am from Central Florida, USA. When I grew up, there were still a lot of woods. All the kids in the neighborhood knew where the blackberry patches were and when the blackberries were ripe. Some of the patches were huge and we could eat blackberries until we got sick. Those were good times. That was an interesting theory about the blackberry plants being carnivorous, and I can easily understand why shepherds would think that was so. Thanks for posting this. :)

Thank you, that was really engaging and informative! I was wondering where the a name Bramble came from. Now I know that 'brom' was Anglo-Saxon for scrub. I'm planning to do a walk around our local nature reserve in a few weeks to introduce people to the bramble. It's one of the few plants that's still green over winter, being semi-evergreen. Worth noting that there is a common and invasive bramble spreading across the land, called Himalayan Giant Bramble. It was brought into the country for cultivation and has spread in recent decades, especially in more urban and disturbed areas, where it grows far longer, tougher stems than our native brambles.

The sound was too low on my IPhone speakers but when I used my Bluetooth headphones connected with my iPhone, the sound was louder.🤷♀️
