Yes, my sharp-eyed and -eared viewers, you are right. In this review I compare the game to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, claiming that the latter game is an example of a multiplayer-focused game containing a good amount of singleplayer content, despite the fact that in my MK8 review I criticized the game for its LACK of singleplayer content! You've been paying excellent attention and you're an excellent fan.
I was indeed disappointed with MK8 in the singleplayer department on a personal level, but even the fairly repetitive goals and challenges are leagues above what Mario Tennis Aces offers. Plus all the other multiplayer options in MK8--as disappointingly limited as they are when weighed against their potential--are still way more substantial. Considering I was fairly critical with MK8, me praising it here by comparison should really tell you something about Mario Tennis Aces.

I'm more surprised you complain about Aces repeating the same missions and stages and gimmicks all the time with only minor changes, when a little game called Super Mario Odyssey did exactly that with like 80% of all moons. 10/10

To sum this game up: it has a really great skeleton, but it needed a lot more meat on its bones.

The gameplay is "simple," but it has a ton of depth. That's what keeps me coming back, at least - there's so many ways to play a match.

Yup. Easy to pick up, hard to master. That's the catch for me as well. The skill ceiling is incredibly high, even in Simple mode.
That's what got me into ARMS too, but I just don't feel like I'd make my money's worth with Mario Tennis Aces, given that I usually go by an hour per dollar rule with my games and stuff. Too little variety, looks like it'd get repetitive to me.
One of my favourite games, Mario Kart DS, I still play to this day (been playing it half of my life), and even that doesn't feel repetitive because of the techniques, mechanics, stages, etc.. The thing that's great about it, is I still find new things to do in it to this day. Mario Tennis Aces looks like it doesn't offer many new discoveries the more you play as games like Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, ARMS, Pokémon and others do.
However, that's coming from someone who's just seen some of it, played a bit of the demo, but never played the actual game. Is this judgement wrong?
Wiziliz I'd say so, to some extent anyways. Most of the variety comes from beating different players using different characters. You have to learn each characters strengths and weaknesses, and past that, you have to get into the head of each of your opponents. There's just so much strategy and skill involved in each match. The gameplay is easy to get into, but the skill ceiling is somewhere in the sky. This allows for lot of room for player growth. I guess it takes a bit of a competitive mindset to enjoy all that, but that really does provide me content. I just want to keep getting better.
Might be more interesting if they added some of those unique single player courts to multiplayer games (like the floating mirrors, and pirate ship and such).
Best Nintendo Tennis game is still the match against Ganondorf in Ocarina...

The game is basically ultra Smash, with better gameplay as far as the online experience goes. All these new courts almost seem pointless when you're stuck on the same one court over and over again on the main online mode.

it says "further balancing". Could mean anything. It's probably too soon to nerf Bowser Jr, I doubt itll be affected till the next patch
I'll eat my hat if it doesn't happen, Bjr is the number one complaint with the game so far.
Lately, it seems like indies titles like Shovel Knight and Hollow knight are the ones delivering the "Full experiences" and the "10/10 ratings" more than the usual 60 dollar games with a few exceptions.
You can choose which courts you want. It's just an over complicated process to do so but you can do it.

On the options menu when choosing your rules and if you press I think plus or minus then you can turn off and on courts
Having to go into a list and turn off every stage except the one you want to play is a really clumsy, roundabout way of choosing a stage. It should be simpler.

It's kind of crazy to think that after ultra smash was panned for having such little content Camelot comes around with a sequel using the same engine and assets nearly 3 years later and IT STILL has a major lack of content. Sure, it has more than ultra smash, but not enough to justify the price tag
Even though they added more content for Aces, I honestly think it's worse than Ultra Smash. I liked the actual core gameplay in Ultra Smash, but as everyone says, there just wasn't anything to add variety or keep you playing. With all the crazy power shots, super slo-mo, stopping the action so you can fire the ball with a gun reticle, and matches that bare no resemblance to tennis, I think Aces destroyed the the basic game play. Who cares about the story mode if you can't stand to play a single match?

@@ressljs Ultra Smash's core gameplay was a lot more bland though then Aces's....how is it any better? Aces didn't destroy the base game play, it just changed it a lot for the better.
Man Mario Tennis Aces was such a shock. One of the big things about the Mario Tennis series is a large amount of unlocks and incentives, this game has NOTHING.
And I'll fight you on the multiplayer being good, there's no proper ranking, which removes the incentive to play it at all for anyone serious about the game. This was a Mario Tennis game for people that don't like Mario Tennis.
actually there is proper ranking when you go into tournaments, there is more proper ranking in this game than splatoon 2, smash ultimate, or any other sort of competitive game nintendo has
I dunno, I feel like the game may have been docked too hard based off of a lack of content. At the end of the day, a sports game, or a fighting game, or a racing game, is about that core gameplay experience in my book, and the quality of that experience is what should have the greatest influence on it's rating. I understand lowering Aces' score due to the lack of content, but I'd probably have given the game a 5/7. To me, having a score smack in the middle says the game's "ok", or "alright", but I think that Mario Tennis Aces, mostly because of how good the tennis part of it is, deserves a "good" rating.
Now if we're talking about if it's worth it's price, I think that's a discussion that requires the entire review to take a different angle depending on the audience you're trying to message to, whether it be the casual Mario sports game player or the Mario Tennis fan.

Considering the game uses the same engine and despite a few tweaks to the main gameplay outside the new mechanics of trick and zone shots, I honestly don't think Camelot was given much time on this game. It kind of feels like an enhanced port. They really could have used an extra. Year and change to add more variety to the game with more modes, perhaps a meatier single player experience.
I love the way they set up the competitive online ranking systems. Really makes you want to come back for more. However it's not worth full price. I bought it, returned it and will gladly pick it up again when it's on sale/receives a price drop

Why would you bother to spend money on a second hand copy when you should've kept your first copy? I know you said it's not worth full price and I agree there but you're spending even more money just to get the game back when you should've kept it after you bought it.

Oh ok. Well on Amazon the game has dropped in price but not by much. $57.95 is what I'm finding under prime.
Mirage6485 yeah I'm in no hurry to get it. I'll wait for a few balance patches and for the dlc characters to release. With that money I got back from aces I bought Mario and rabbids golden edition and have been having a blast. Now that's a package worth your 60 dollars

I think this game marks a shift Nintendo has slowly been making. We now have three games (Splatoon 2, ARMS, and Mario Aces) with an emphasis on competitive multiplayer. Smash Ultimate will also be dropping this year, and it looks to be the most competitive version of the game since Melee.
I wouldn't be surprised if the growing divide in the fanbase continues to expand, as those who prefer single player experiences will probably be disappointed by games such as this. Although Octopath will be coming out soon, and that looks like a lot of fun. Hopefully people enjoy it.

Some Guy Yea, last year...but next years lineup looks promising(in terms of first party) for people who want more single players. There’s FE, that new traditional Pokémon, maybe Metroid Prime 4.
It does seem like Nintendo is now focusing it's multiplayer titles on appealing to an always online, competitive crowd, often at the expense of robust or varied single-player content and gameplay modes. Splatoon is able to do it well because it receives constant updates, but other than that I think it's increasingly clear that the days of Nintendo multiplayer games with in-depth single player content ala Subspace Emissary in Smash or even the suprisingly lengthy story mode of Mario Super Sluggers are gone
I guess Nintendo felt pretty damn confident in themselves that they could churn out minimal content because of the Nintendo branding and people would eat it up. Feels like the Mario Party games where it took 2 fails in a row before going back to basics.
Sad thing is....it kinda works. Why do you think the U ports have been overpriced? They know they can get away with this bullshit.

Take a look at the content now. I like that they added content over time. Kept the interest up for many Mario Tennis fans. The game was a 7.8 but now is easily an 8.7 or 9 now. 30 characters, everything has been balanced and the story is fun enough. The core tennis gameplay is better than any tennis game ive played

The things I mostly like about this game is the Online Tournament and unlocking new characters monthly. But, I agree with your criticism. This game didn't had that much content, and it didn't had a great OST either. And, I also thought it was way too overpriced as well.

I just think people have expectations that Nintendo always outdo themselves. This time they did it from a gameplay perspective, but the game lacks content at launch.
Hopefully it will continue to be updated like all of Nintendo's online games habe been lately.

Nintendo is kinda in a tricky situation this year. The Switch is still in need of more system-sellers. Odyssey, Splatoon, and Breath of the Wild are great, but they won't appeal to everyone, and they definitely can't carry an entire system on their own.
Pretty sure the conversation between Nintendo and Camelot amounted to, "We need a Mario Tenns game yesterday!", and this was the best Camelot could conjur up with limited resources.
We can at least acknowledge the most positive aspect of this game... it isn't Ultra Smash.

C Bass Ultra Smash was a souless cash grab with barebone content. No tournament mode, one court, small roster, horrible online, Mega Mushroom Mode is a joke, ONE FUCKING MINIGAME, and knockout challenge just being boring as hell. The only good things about Ultra Smash is the soundtrack, visuals, and core gameplay.
Hate to break it to you but aces is just ultra smash with better online and a story mode tacked on... Look for comparison videos on youtube and you'll see even the character select animations are the same, as is the main court and many more things beyond
It's hardly the same game. The gameplay is no where near the same. Reusing assets aren't a new thing but the gameplay has changed quite a bit, it also has an actual tournament mode and some better balancing imo. Though it still needs work.
To say this game is just Ultra Smash again is just wrong.
The gameplay itself is fantastic in my opinion. Haven't had this much fun playing with friends on the couch in a very long time. Just a shame that, as of now at least, there aren't nearly enough modes. 2v2 tournaments, c'mon. And let us choose stages and playtime online!

I'm glad I stuck with the game though. They actually updated the game a lot. They added 14 new characters, a new singleplayer island, 3 coop challenge minigames, competitive ring shot mode, alternate costumes, tournament improvements, and many balance patches and additional options (like court selector, game length, hosted tournaments, etc.)

Dude you are so right about this game. It broke my heart with how little content there was and on top of it you don't get to unlock any of the characters besides the tournaments that just GIVES them to you. So lame.

I really want to like this game a lot, but the lack of stuff to do is such a hinderance. This isn't on them, but I have so much trouble with timing my block shots. I also just wish the Adventure Mode had a Retry button.
I found that letting the ball hit the court ground, makes it so you can block without an issue.
Its quite simple really, use zone speed and wait until its almost a body shot, then hit it

This was my thought exactly. I play tennis in real life, but the crazy shotmaking and zone shots have me totally thrown. I really do wish there was a retry button too.

This is a multiplayer game.
Idk I agree that there is a lack of content and options but the campaign mode i mean what did you expect from a mario sports game in 2018. I have no clue how arld found the campaign easy tho it takes me like a billion tries to complete anything in the campaign and I easily spend anywhere from 8-40 minutes on each stage.

Mr Dr. Pepper Which is an add on, not a main feature, the main purpose of the game is that you can play with other people. That's like playing Mario Odyssey and complaining that the multiplayer aspect is shallow (which it is).
Thankfully, third parties are bringing the goods with Wolfenstein and Crash, so there's that at least

Maybe my switch allows me to play game more often since it's portable so having Doom and Wolfenstein 2 available on the system allows me to enjoy them without having to be restricted to one place, or even a TV.
Maybe I can tolerate lower resolutions and "inferior" framerates if it means I get to have fun no matter my current situation.
And maybe, just maybe, instead of being an elitist asshole you can recognize that people find a use for these versions of the game, and even if they're not for you, you can still appreciate that people have fun with them.
I agree the game lacks some options and content, but I think the gameplay is amazing and the adventure mode was a great time so personally I think it was a pretty good game.
A lot of people are comparing it to fighting games/previous tennis games and I think that shows where this game shines: Online and in local multiplayer.

Meh, I quite liked Adventure Mode. Wasn't too long, taught me the basics and was fun. Online is a blast and there's definitely going to be more support in the future with all the new characters coming. I disagree with a lot of your points here Arlo but I respect how you feel about the game

Mike strong, I am okay with this! Especially since games have been lacking on the switch this year. So far all I am excited about are only coming out once or twice a month anyway! 3rd party indie games I could buy whenever and maybe even when a deal emerges, but if it’s a triple A title, then it’s got to be a good review from Arlo to get me to pay 60 bucks for it. I think I’ll take my chances considering Kirby star allies (not my cup of tea but judging by Arlo’s review it would have been a waste of money anway) and now Mario tennis aces ( definitely let down when I beat everything that it had in store and got wrecked on online play by bj) would all but confirm my new strategy:)

Tracer Bullet i meant to say that it doesn't need to have a story or cool cutcenes. It's a little cool game 4kids so they can waste there time on it, and have a good time.
But the thing is that this is a Mario game, and the game can be so much more if more effort was put into it. Mario Power Tennis on Gamecube had a lot more single player content for the price and is worth a lot more than anything Aces has to offer. It's true that Aces has the best gameplay and most mechanical depth in the series, but that means only people who are competitive will stick around because of the online multiplayer.
Anytime a new Nintendo switch game comes out, I anxiously await arlo’s in depth review of it. These videos always seriously help me decide whether or not I should buy a game.

Just beat this game right now. The gameplay is super fun but everything else about it is more shallow than a puddle.
For clarification, I beat the game in a good 4 hours max. Basically, my whole afternoon.

Until Octo Expansion dropped, Splatoon 2's single player was little more than a glorified tutorial.
I personally got the game for the multiplayer but even other games like Mario Kart 8 & Splatoon 2 have a solid single player that I can entertain myself with. I feel like the hyped Aces' single player a lot, but it turns out to be more of an afterthought.

I was so excited for Mario Tennis Aces before it came out, hoping it'd be a fun-filled, content packed enjoyable Mario sports title like Mario Kart 8 and all the other sports games I've never played...
.... but yeah, I was mistaken. And honestly, I find myself struggling to want to come back to it save for the occasional local multiplayer match, and the game's been out for less then a month. It's not horrible by any means and if you find the tennis gameplay addictive, more power to ya: I just can't bring myself to care about holding onto this.
But that's just a general comment on the game. On your review specifically though Arlo, great work as always; it was informative, fun, personal and just.... well more interesting then the majority of video reviews I've seen on the internet. Great work :)

I love the online tournaments because of how mad or happy I get from them. Sure the adventure mode was pretty short but after the online demo there is no way I could live without this game

I had roughly the same thoughts. I had hoped the adventure mode would reinvigorate my love of Mario Tennis. But, when I saw how bare bones it was, I got tired of it by the 2nd hour. This game is mostly for multiplayer and it's great at that, but I'm just not interested in multiplayer only games.

great review. You gave a viewpoint into the games pros and cons and in the end, that's all we can ask for. I hope Nintendo sees this review as a truthful look and an honest opinion and not one that "bashes" their free review title they gave out. That might effect their judgement in the future. these big companies usually like echo chambers from their reviewers.
ironically the Mario Tennis for the virtual boy was the very first Mario Tennis I played and it was in a video store I never owned a virtual boy, and I haven't played a Mario Tennis since then just like you said, this one will probably be the next one I play

(and maybe even combined with Star Allies, and I say this as a Kirby fan, but you gotta be honest with yourself sometimes👐)
So it's weird to me how that game on the outset is the simplest of the three and "looks like a newbie $10 mobile game experience" probably offers more content than these two games.
I'm not quite sure whats up with that but hopefully these two games are just hiccups and anymore games coming up from Nintendo don't feel like there's only half a game to play.

It got rid of the car which was it's main problem and now it's only hurdle is if it falls into the Aces mistake of thinking that "fixing the problem" is the only thing it had to do.)
In my opinion hollow knight for the switch for 15$ offers much more content then all of those games combined and is super amazing.

Well I didn't get that game so I wouldn't know, but you're probably right.. I'm not sure.
It's better than Arms, but worse than Splatoon 2, I kinda wish I had waited for a sale, because it doesn't feel like a $60 game...
To be honest I like Arms a lot.
I should have way more modes and content, but they were able to do something very new with very high quality.
Also I am very excited about the future of the franchise.
For example I imagine the next game could very well be an action game instead of a fighting game.

The mechanics are great, but if you have played another Mario Tennis Game, you don´t need to buy the new one.
There isn´t enough content and it doesn´t feel different enough to be worth that kind of money.

I completely agree with everything you’ve said here. Every other review I’ve seen gives off the impression that the reviewer is enamored with the core gameplay and that’s more than enough to warrant a happy purchase from them, and although I agree that this core gameplay IS fun, everything else just seems so empty, even compared to past Mario Tennis games, most notably Power Tour and Power Tennis, both of which feature a pretty good wealth of content that Aces just doesn’t stand up to.
Also no intro cinematic makes me a sad boi :(

I was so disappointed by this game I felt ripped off. There is almost no content to speak of and I'd rather just go back and play power tennis on the GC since there are things to actually do.
Like really good minigames. And the N64 game had the Bowser court with Mario Kart items and it was amazing.
Good points Arlo. I really wanted longer free-play matches like in the older games, but the single player tournament is the only glimpse at longer matches that show energy levels and stuff could be strategically fun.
A shame, because the core tennis gameplay is really good. Well, I'll be there for the monthly online tourneys.

The online alone was enough to sell me on this, its so deep and so much fun, and playing against each persons play style is so great. Figuring the opponent out and taking advantage of their weaknesses. Its awesome! Also im surprised you had an issue with going against Bowser Jr. I havent had any issue with him so far. Maybe i will in the future though idk. Either way if hes broken i hope they do fix him
wtf how is Mario kart 8 light in content compared to Mario kart 8 deluxe I know you haven't played it but deluxe has barely anything more than the wii u version a part from battle mode but even that was in the original just without the battle tracks so I think you should of thought about your choice of words there
but mario kart 8 got only additional tracks and characters from the dlc, also 200cc is just another mode of difficulty, it doesn't add much content to differentiate MK8 Deluxe. You're trying to sound smart without knowing about what you're talking about.

The focus of Mario Tennis Aces isn't the online. Compare it to Splatoon 2 (without DLC), it has a mediocre singleplayer because the main focus is online multiplayer, but there are a bunch of modes you can play online. You are also rewarded. Mario Tennis Aces suffers since it's boring playing alone, but you only have one or two modes for online multiplayer which doesn't give you a reward, just points.
Zapito & Checken How are you rewarded for playing in Splatoon? Is it the new perks for your clothes or the new modes?
Wandering Boober You unlock Ranked Mode, League Mode, Weapons, perks for your clothing, things like that. It's small, but in my opinion, it's better than just useless points.
The rewards for playing a match of splatoon 2 is coins which the coins are used to buy clothes and weapons. The more points you get the more coins.

What it lacks is just MORE content. Like customes and stuff to unlock while playing online or maybe new stages added each month. Something to keep it interesting. The core gameplay is super good.

Despite Arlo not liking this game, you'll notice that a LOT of Smash Bros players such as RelaxAlax, Alpharad, and ZeRo like this game a lot. Why? Because this game was intended for e-sports lovers. It's intense, thrilling, and most importantly very competitive. So it's natural that players like Arlo whose emphasis is more on the in-depth single player gameplay didn't enjoy as much as those players mentioned above.
So, since this game did satisfy its target audience, the competitive players, I say it's a pretty great game, just not for everyone's tastes.
See the problem is it *only* satisfies that intense competitive target audience. A majority of people who pick up games are not the competitive crowd, so that's actually really bad to provide an experience only the hardest of hardcore give a shit about.
Remember how Street Fighter 5 had damn good gameplay and basically no content at launch? That's what Aces is, *without* any meaningful promise of more in patches and DLC.
Here’s all they have to do to expand the content, add stages from story mode into exhibition mode, some tournaments with said stages (like in Mario power Tennis) and done.
And maybe add some ways to unlock characters outside of online tournament.
One of the things I miss the most is the wario and waluigi cutscenes and bloopers from mario power tennis
