How Mario Tennis Aces Showcases EVERYTHING WRONG With Modern Gaming And Nintendo

  • Nintendo is admired for being one of the best game developers. They are known to make incredible games, and have been praised for "not rushing" games. That is mostly true. But with the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo has made some of the worst decisions. Mario Tennis Aces launched in 2018, and I was very excited to play it. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. That is an understatement. This game has MANY issues that are ignored because it's "just a tennis game". After analyzing the game, it perfectly represents EVERYTHING wrong with the Switch era. But why is that? Join us, as we take an indepth look at my most detested Mario game.

There is some validity to the "unfinished" definition nitpick, in that "unfinished" implies that there was an intention for there to be more to the game. That's arguably the biggest matter with Aces; it likely isn't a case of trying and failing, but rather of never making the attempt at all. From appearances, Aces was never designed to be more than a lower-effort lower-content title that would still be sold at a premium price, which apparently both Camelot and Nintendo were perfectly fine with. Which is a pretty bad warning sign not just for future Camelot titles, but Nintendo titles in general.

  • @cpugamer1012
    @cpugamer1012 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

Honestly, that's a really bad definition of what "unfinished" means. By that logic, ET for the Atari is a finished game, since it is technically functional. But I doubt anyone will be willing to argue that ET was a finished, as-intended experience, because it pretty obviously was not. Lowering the standards of a "finished" game to one that is, on a basic level, functional is not the direction critics should be heading down. Just another way to play softball with Nintendo.
"It's not unfinished, it's just missing features that games have had for the last thirty years!"
No. It's unfinished. It is unacceptable, Nintendo should be ashamed, and we should shame them for allowing this dribble on store shelves.

I feel that there’s no need to worry about Mario Strikers Battle League, considering it isn’t Camelot, it’s Next Level Games. Next Level Games has an extremely good track record and their previous projects have been great. But unfortunately if your suspicions end up being true, I’m still gonna bite the bullet as the last game came out 15 years ago, and I’ve been waiting nearly my entire life for a new one. First of all, I'm a diehard Mario Tennis Aces fan. I've adored this game since it came out, and I've loved the free updates. That said, I can totally understand people's frustration with the amount of content being dished out for a $60 game that isn't even technically complete. For me, I had zero problems with it. Even if this game got zero updates, no single player content, and no mini-games whatsoever, I STILL would have loved it. It's a competitive 1-on-1 multiplayer game. That is already a pretty niche market mostly dominated by fighting games. The fact that it is a tennis game makes it an even more niche market. For the sake of sales, Nintendo had to give this game more content, but the game ultimately doesn't need any of it. The gameplay is INCREDIBLE. The visuals are gorgeous. The adrenaline rush this game gives me is rivaled only by a handful of other competitive games. Why should I care if there's a few more extra characters that I'll never play as coming or a single player mode that I'll spend no more than three hours on when I can sink hundreds of hours into a stellar multiplayer experience? That's just my take. Mario Tennis Aces didn't do enough for the casual market, but for the competitive audience, this game was exactly what it needed to be day one.

    • @gamingainz
      @gamingainz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Same here. Not a "diehard fan" but I actually play this game online pretty regularly and I still think it has best gameplay from the series even though it lacks other content. I love how it basically brought back all the gameplay features from previous games and made them more balanced/skill based. For example power shots from power tennis are basically special shots now but they actually do feel more powerful and satisfying. Defensive power shots are basically trick shots now. Chance shots are fully charged shots now so theyre more skill based rather than being random/luck based. Ultra smash where character would jump and deliver powerful shot is now a zone shot where you can also aim but now requires energy so you cant spam it all the time like in ultra smash making it more balanced rather than being too op. Would I prefered if this game had more themed courts and other side modes? Sure. But I would probably play those side modes only a little bit and then come back and play the main mode 99% of time anyway. Its also a lot more fast paced then mario power tennis which is why I prefer it. And its also super fun playing doubles with friends. Singleplayer content no matter how good can only last so long but good multiplayer keeps you coming back. So in terms of gameplay and multiplayer this one is still best in the series for me despite its other shortcomings. And I play these types of games mainly for multiplayer anyway.

It is utterly depressing how far Nintendo has fallen from grace. For the past decade, my Wii U and Switch have seen more use than my PS4 and Xbox One combined because Nintendo's exclusives were exactly what I wanted from video games: no microtransaction/loot box/pay to win nonsense, being complete at launch (in terms of both polish and content), and most important of all, having the budget spent on making the gameplay as engaging, exciting, and possibly even innovative as possible, rather than just blowing money on celebrity talent or the most trendy licensed music. In my honest opinion, Nintendo should have been firing on all cylinders for the entirety of the Switch era, not only giving us consistently amazing installments in nearly every one of their major franchises, but also giving us an enormous library of retro games from all of their legacy systems (including the Virtual Boy) at a steady pace, where we would have access to each title with a subscription OR be able to buy individual titles in a Virtual Console-like fashion. And, of course, having online that actually works.
The Switch had the potential to be absolutely LEGENDARY, and I think if Nintendo hadn't sat on their laurels and instead given us exactly what I just described, it would've not only hit the 100 million mark much sooner, but it might've even surpassed the mighty PS2 as the best selling console of all time. Mind you, the Switch itself is still far from bad or even mediocre, but I feel like it's an unfortunate case of wasted opportunities. Let's hope the Switch's inevitable successor listens to the actual feedback of diehard fans, rather than sample the 90% of the install base that doesn't know anything about video games, to improve itself and unleash that potential.
UPDATE: In retrospect, I feel like I had overexaggerated a bit with saying Nintendo "fell from grace" during the Switch era, especially with the games. Like Youngsta Joey and several others pointed out, there have been far more hits than misses in the Switch era, with most of these games being spectacular and pushing their respective series forward. I still stand by my points regarding legacy content and the online service, though, and I would also add Nintendo's atrocious habit of taking down romsites hosting their games and people uploading their music on TH-cam and then having a Direct or some other big announcement to make everyone forget about what they did. You know, instead of actually providing easy and legal ways for people to experience their old games and music, which would literally be the easiest money they could possibly make.

You're exaggerating a bit there bud. They've made big mistakes with the switch, but to say they've "fallen from grace" because you're butthurt they don't take every suggestion you have is ridiculous. As the other guy said, they've actually gone up in terms of quality. We're getting definitive releases in many of their franchises, hitting new peaks. Smash ultimate, botw, mario odyssey, forgotton land, legends arceus, three houses, luigis mansion 3, splatoon 2, xenoblade 2...it goes on. We have unique hardware that isn't relying on some gimmick like motion controls or 3d, but an actual innovative feature. We have gotten few droughts like we did with the Wii U. If anything, most years have been packed with big releases, like 2017, 2019, 2021, and now 2022. Not discounting anything you said, those are valid criticisms. But to use those to paint the whole switch era as a fall from grace is stretching.

Mario Golf World Tour is an absolute masterpiece compared to most Mario sports games of the past decade. Sure there’s paid-DLC, but the price-content ratio helps its case. Plus you had some offline unlockable. It is true that some of the stuff is no longer obtainable or playable but playing with the Mii was the least of my concerns. That said, each terrain looked exceptional for a game on the 3DS, new animations are used, challenges are included… and it is a game I still love to play just to “relax”. Heck, you even have a glossary for all golf terms, lot of options for the camera and see where the ball could land… and most importantly…
Each hole was its own thing and you could remember them! Take that, Mario Golf Super Rush! Sure some DLCs were remasters of N64 terrains or reskins even… but they did look good, Koopa Park looking phenomenal with that sunset presentation. It’s as if this game had a soul or something.

Good video. Aces is a really divisive game indeed. Nintendo and Camelot have no excuses for why Aces was so barren of content at launch (arguably even now), considering Ultra Smash was basically a fully-functional tech demo which Aces simply builds upon (Aces uses Ultra Smash's assets and engine). As much as I love the game, it's hard to recommend it to anyone at a casual level. If you're the kind of person who'll spend hours playing online or with friends, then it's one of the most fun Switch games period. Power Tennis has more personality and is probably the better casual experience but Aces has it beat when it comes to gameplay IMO.

First impressions matter a whole awful lot in gaming, that's why cyberpunk 2077 will always be a horrible buggy mess in the minds of the public no matter how much fixing cd project red does. "Actually good" means that it was satisfying and generally felt like a good deal with only the launch content. Basically, it only works if the free updates are the cherry on top of an already good cake.

@@kfcnyancat So I guess, it is possible for free content updates to work if your game isn't good, but the problem is that it almost entirely depends on the notoriously fickle process of people noticing and widely talking about your updates so a wide audience can even know your updates exist. But, the only way for people to notice your updates that you have any real control over is if a large number of your players are still playing your game by the time the updates come out, which given they weren't in the base game(and therefore likely had basically no development at launch), will take months, which is probably plenty of time for people to have beaten your game many times over. Thus, we have a paradox. Namely, the updates that are theoretically supposed to bring people back(by increasing the replay value) rely on a high replay value to begin with to get people to notice them, or a game so stupidly long or grindy it takes months to beat(so basically a multiplayer looter shooter or mmorpg) while still having enough good stuff to keep interest for a long time.

Dimitri- thanks for the informative Video. My pal Jason and I watched together, and we were so surprised to discover the quality of this game. The graphics and animations are quite good, and we enjoyed the minimalist UI design! The character roster is stellar, and the gameplay far deeper and more nuanced than either of us expected. We went from this game not being on our radars at all, to seriously considering picking it up, all thanks to you! Thanks ‘meech!

That's actually really great to hear. I remember seeing a comment on another video that was kinda the opposite of this. They watched Dunkey's review of Splatoon 2, and then didn't buy the game because Dunkey said it was bad. Then that person bought the game three years later and absolutely loved it, and regretted not buying it earlier because of one single video they watched. Just goes to show that everyone has different opinions on games.

Kirby Star Allies was mostly missing the Extra Mode, it wasn't great, but the game wasn't really missing anything too major for the game. The game started to fix issues with the game after launch, as well as fixing a bit the content problem with all the free new characters and their own modified versions of Guest Hero. Kirby Star Allies' case is definitely debatable depending how important the Extra Mode was for the overall experience, but everything else the game technically needed was already at launch.
In the other hand, Mario Tennis Aces is a game that I have no doubt it was launch unfinish, it was not only missing a challenge mode; as you said, it was also missing parts of the story mode and the UI wasn't working correctly... how is this game missing select options? (KSA could have many issues, but UI never was one).

I agree with many of the points of the video, but I think it isn't fault of Camelot but of Nintendo's, since the Wii U/3DS era Mario Spin offs in general started to look more "safe", not risking too much and basically just have enough stuff to be "serviceable", this highly shows up in the UI of most of recent Mario spin offs, the lack of the quirkiness old spin offs had, even the gameplay can be very simplified, and if this issue happens with every spin off game despite all of them being made by different developers, it must be Nintendo's fault, which is a true shame honestly...

  • @psap29
    @psap29 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

You're being overly nitpicky about Aces here. Don't get me wrong, the game has plenty of flaws, but you are blowing a lot of them way out of proportion. The UI is fine in terms of presentation. The game is meant to feel like your typical sports broadcast, which it succeeds in for the most part. The menus definitely needed more work, for sure, but they look fine for the most part. The story mode was definitely lacking. It needed more cutscenes and a more gradual difficulty curve. The costume rotation being a month is absolutely asinine, as is the minigames being locked behind the motion controls. While I don't mind the motion controls, you need to be given the option to play with the controls that you want to play with.
You said yourself that the core gameplay is outstanding. The problem is that you're letting things like the UI, lack of modes at launch, meh story mode, and reused audio clips annoy you way more than they should. The gameplay is by far the most important part of a game. It doesn't matter how many modes you have or how good your menus look, if the gameplay is bad, the game is bad. While Aces has plenty of flaws and needed more content at launch, at the core it is still a good game. It could have been great if it had more modes at launch and a better story mode, but Aces is still a good game as is. Still not worth a full $60, though.

I didn't get the game day 1, so no opening and no stage select are things I wasn't even aware of. (If I were, I would've honestly not gotten the game at all; you don't just leave out a stage select in ANY competitive game)
My biggest gripe is by far with the unlockables. I got the Online, so I got the characters over time, but seeing them in story mode before they launched was the same kind of annoying tease as Fire Emblem Warriors locking Oboro, Navarre, and Niles behind DLC despite them being in the story mode that was in the game since launch.
However what REALLY got on my nerves were the online challenges being the only way to get costumes, as well as the inability to play local tournaments with a second player (something I downright asked for after Power Tennis). I never touched a single offline tournament as a result, but I suspected it'd be pointless anyways since we didn't get characters from them like we used to in older Mario sports titles like Mario Sports Mix, though I didn't expect it to be SO pointless we didn't even get COSTUMES from them.
Speaking of costumes, as much as I love the yellow Yoshi, I was FUMING when I realized it was locked behind online challenges. Even Open Tennis was just a free QR code. And just my luck, not only is it the hardest tier of the three to get out of ITS monthly lineup, but the first time I got the challenge for the Yoshi colors, it was the OTHER set of them as unlockables.
Also you know how Mario gets his overalls back when you finish story mode? Well for some reason, that's a Mario exclusive thing. Why can't we have Luigi's overalls? Wario's? Waluigi's? Shorts and short dresses as alternates for the princesses? Heck, the different Koopa and Paratroopa colors are also unused afaik, even though Shy Guy gets colors, and I think even Boo has alternates (though I don't remember what they are). Throw in the Miis and you could do even more.
Not only that, but one thing I noticed with the Yoshis is that their logos, emblems, and rackets don't change colors to match their new ones. Either they're implying it's all the same one Yoshi (which, considering that one special move in Power Tennis, is possible), or they got too lazy to even recolor those.
Between that and the basic game mode just feeling samey, even though we're constantly together, I still try to convince sis that it's too boring of a game to go back to, and really only do so because it's somehow still one of the few games that understood that, yea, Yoshi has different colors.
For context, I beat the story too, and it was not worth it. As cool as having Mario in his traditional overalls is, I feel like you should AT LEAST ALSO unlock the Lucien versions of Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. (And also, y'know, NOT tease characters that are supposed to be DLC. DLC keeps people coming if they're a surprise because there's always a chance they'll like it, whereas exposing them in the story just tells people "yea, those are the guys you'll get later", which is NOT a good PR move since it basically admits to the game not being finished enough for them to be playable even though they look perfectly fine in the story)

Thing is that I wonder how do you see the other Martio Tennis games like 64 or Power, since while at least the latter does have more single player meat than Aces and more polish in some areas, they definitely can't last a whole lot of time, since unless thay have and RPG mode Tennis isnt' really the most varied sport out there, and they shine more in multi player too.

I think it's fair to point out the NSO wasn't a thing yet at the time of Tennis Aces' release. The paywall stuff was unintentional and (possibly?) an unfortunate side-effect of something that came later. Feel free to dispute my claim. I don't have the full picture there admittedly.
But if it's true, that means it's a side-effect, the title "How Mario Tennis Aces Showcases EVERYTHING WRONG With Modern Gaming And Nintendo" would imply that all the companies do it on accident. When they don't. And they shouldn't.

The thing is, NSO was supposed to launch in late 2017 but Nintendo extended the free period by nearly a year because, believe it or not, they said they wanted to improve the quality of the online itself before launch.

Honestly, the fact that the game is a disappointment isn't as big of a problem as the fact that Nintendo games almost NEVER fall down in price. The fact that Kirby Star Allies can still be found at 60$ or near that price, same as the latest Kirby game is pretty insane to me. Nintendo did put out other meh games with the Switch as well, and those games would be alright as Nintendo Selects for 20$. But 60$ is insane and even 40$ would be pushing it for some of these games. Look at 1-2 Switch. Does anyone even buy that anymore? People complained about the 70$ price tag for games that companies like Sony are pushing, as people should do because it's an anti consumer move, but at least these will still fall down in price. I already see PS5 games with reduced prices for example. But a game such as BOTW, a Switch launch title, is still full price or near that. It launched 5 years ago. And people defend it. Couple that with the absence of the Selects line and... It's just insane. I don't know what else to say, really. I also think that Nintendo porting old ports to Switch is a great thing, even if they were a bit too over-reliant on them, but 60$ is not good for these as well. As far as I know in the past when Nintendo ported some GC games to the Wii, those ports weren't fully priced and eventually some also became part of the Selects line. The Nintendo of nowadays will probably never do that. Maybe they will and I'll be proven wrong. Hopefully. But I doubt it.

I remember I too was stuck on the Kamek rally in Adventure mode and there was no retry option. Instead, you had to go through a bunch of dialogue with Kamek in order to try again. I did manage to beat it and I didn’t feel satisfied at all. But hey, a retry option was added to the game, but only a few months later when I already finished it. WHAT THE HECK NINTENDO?!
Also, my big problem with this game is in free play. Everything when deciding a match is done at the start (picking singles/doubles, and choosing a court (with hazards or no hazards)). Nintendo did fix it months later with a stage select screen, but the people who made this game should have thought that this isn’t very good, but no.
Now, that you cover this game, what is your opinion on Mario Golf: Super Rush? I think that game is a lot more fun than Aces, and I feel it has a much better U.I. than that game as well.

It’s a fun game imo, but yeah, it feels like everyone’s praising it only because it’s better than Ultra Smash. Like, guys, come on, that’s not a high bar.

When I see these series of games, I always compare within any combination. With that in mind, Aces is my third favorite in the series. And this review shows how low the bar is set when it comes to how close the best is.

I will say as much as Aces lacked, it still had the makings of a good game. A stacked roster and gameplay that had the most mechanical depth in the series do make it stand out among the other entries. While the courts are on the bland side compared to Power Tennis, they are still somewhat unique and are a major step up from Ultra Smash.
Aces unfortunately served as the beginning of Nintendo's "free update" strategy, which effectively kills their games on arrival. Aces did have a decent foundation and built up to be a better game that found redemption in the eyes of some, but the new Golf and Strikers entries weren't so lucky, as people immediately felt like the games were undercooked upon release. Free updates make the games better, yes, but they should already feel finished to begin with. Now those games have lost their relevancy. What happened to "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."?

I've never played Mario Tennis Aces, and I never plan to, but tbh for the amount of anger you have for it, the game doesn't even sound that bad. Just sounds like it's pretty light on offline content, and that the cosmetics are tedious to unlock.
Like, fair enough, it sounds like it isn't exactly a $60 experience, but as you said in the review, the core game is fun. Just the offline content is barren.

So....you bought Aces because of a Story mode? That seems like dumb move in your part tho, expecting a mode to the GB games even tho their stories are really simple and the main goal being "Become a Pro and beat Mario". I can at least give Aces Adventure mode some credit on learning the mechanics a bit faster. About the whole Camelot reusing sfx and voice lines, they've done since Mario Golf with reusing Hot Shots Golf 1 sfx (they did develop the 1st HSG/EG game).

@@eatfrishkirby6191 Yeah, but they're really simple like example:
      Superstar Baseball/Sluggers - Beat Bowser
Golf/Tennis GB and Andvance Tour/Power - Become the top player in fhe land and then face the Mario characters in a harder tournament.
Hoops 3 on 3: Just a tournament but your trophy gets stolen by FF characters and play them in a final.
Sports Mix: Same as 3 on 3 but you get an actual boss fight at the end.
Strikers: Just a tournament but you face Bowser's Super Team and then that team gets demoted to Janitor duty in Charged.

Golf Super Rush- Same as Golf GB but is in the Mario universe now. The difference is that you're trying to progress on your Pro journey but some of the courses are having unusual weather conditions and you go and fix the problems.

I personally loved Aces overall for its base gameplay, but I do agree certain things could have been better. Much better even. Though I mainly clicked the video due to the thumbnail. I haven’t finished the video yet so I don’t know if you address it, but I’m pretty sure there are no characters locked behind a paywall. There’s no paid DLC at all. If you’re referring to the alternative outfits, I do agree that they should be obtainable offline, but those aren’t whole characters.
You do seem to make some solid points overall. Though I personally like the Aces UI.

I clicked on this video, partly because I've been waiting for Demeech's review, and partly because I wanted to nitpick the thumbnail. The characters are free and thus NOT locked behind a paywall. Nitpick done. Now Imma watch the video.
EDIT: Ok, I'm at 12:20. I see you meant the costumes since you DO need to play the monthly online challenges to get them all. That's fair enough I guess.
    BUT
The minigames are not online only. They were at launch but they got added to local play. Unfortunately they are under the motion control section of the game, which IS a good complain. Me and my friends despise motion controls, so we only played them once to unlock the extra costumes at the third level of each and that was that. Fortunately, ring shot (unlockable after you beat adventure) is its own separate mode and can be played with normal controls, even though the only thing it unlocks are a few Yoshi skins that are separate from the online ones. I believe purple and I think black are not on the yellow/blue/red monthly rotation.
EDIT 2: Ok, I finished the whole thing. Pretty much agree with the majority of the points made. I still like the game solely because the gameplay itself carries it HARD, especially in local multiplayer. But it IS an unfinished game.
