“What was ONCE unthinkable”. That is a true statement. I mean, it hasn’t been unthinkable for a while. But if you told someone in the 70s that there will be a Brisbane vs Sydney GF in a national Aussie rules competition, people would have laughed at you.
Not quite true. Sure, the Sydney Swans originated in Sth Melbourne but the 'Bears' originated in Brisbane....then when Fitzroy folded, the Bears absorbed them and they became the Lions and changed their colours to Fitzroy's. They never 'originated' in Melbourne.
You guys have to understand it's about the two rugby league powerhouse states playing each other on the biggest stage in AFL. It's not about how did these teams make the GF, The Project are simply emphasising the fact that they are BOTH Rugby League Cities & this match up has NEVER happened before in the big dance. & Eddie must have been told to spin that line about Sydney possibly winning the AFL & Melbourne NRL cos that's old news. Already happened 12 years ago in 2012 when Melbourne were NRL Champions & Sydney were the AFL Premiers.
They Sydney Swans have made the Finals more times than any other Club since 1996. Brisbane won 3 flags in a row more than two decades ago. Unthinkable is she for real? They have literally done zero research on this.
Well, the AFL did state in the 90s they would do "whatever was required" to ensure success for the Brisbane and Sydney teams. Next minute there were Cost Of Living Allowances for these two teams when in reality it cost more to live in Perth at the time. The AFL long ago sold their sporting integrity in order to expand the market in the east - but very few people know or care to hold them accountable. At the end of the day it is a business.

The Swans hosted a Preliminary final in 1996 and got 41k. Here we are 28 years later, and they only got 44k. The GWS average crowd this year was only 10k. Unthinkable really the Lions won 3 flags 21 years ago and the Swans played in the GF 28 years ago. What a silly story.

The average crowd and TV audience is a much better guide. The reality is that if you look at crowds and TV audiences the AFL has literally made no progress in QLD and NSW since 1996. The NRL has made more progress in Victoria than the AFL has in NSW and QLD.

The only equivalent to this would be a Melbourne v Perth NRL Grand Final in Sydney. But we'll have to wait a long time for that as Perth will only come into the NRL competition in 2027 & will need time to build success.

There are only 2 AFL teams in NSW one of them is the GWS who this year had an average crowd on only 10,000. The AFL is so far behind the NRL is NSW it's not even funny.
The AFL is justabout guaranteed to get atleast 50,000 turn out to atleast one of nine regular Home and Away matches every single round. And it doesn't even necessarily have to be a Melbourne-based match either. But nobody in the AFL states is claiming that AFL has or ever will takeover the NRL states anyway. So you can chill. But AFL certainly has a much stonger imprint in the NRL states than vice verser, that's for sure.
That 50k game was the best attended first week final in the NRL ever. Most other NRL finals this year were closer to the GWS semi in terms of attendance. Of course, NRL is still significantly more popular in Sydney, but AFL is doing fine too.

The Swans perception of Sydney stretches from Bondi to Paddington - most have likely never been past Strathfield.
