Next to Gokiager, Toqger was my favorite season I've watched so far. It had my all time favorite Blue Ranger, Villain (Emperor Z. but Junior from Kakuranger is only a heartbeat away), best looking henchmen, and Episode (the one where Yellow had that stalker) in all Sentai. I also loved their 6th. Finally, I rank Toqger so high because the entire ride was fun from start to finish. I loved its plot and pacing, but even the minor filler episodes were fun. It had its share of twists. Hell, even the ending of the first episode took a dark story twist. This series went from 0-60 from the beginning. I really can't give this one any cons Still, I give your review a thumbs up. I always enjoy watching your opinion and of course how you present them.
Fun fact Akira's actor was a child character in Zyuranger in that episode where a monster was tricked into attacking the Rangers and they were forced to kill it.
The villains made me continue watching this sentai with all the backstabbing and betrayal made it seem like a soap opera. On the hand the rangers were meh with exception of Akira he was fun to watch.
Super excited for this review! Having watched every sentai starting from Changeman and although I do think some seasons are objectively better, ToQger is hands down my favorite and rivals the one other toku (Ryuki) in regards to having the strongest impact on my views and life as a whole.

When it comes to having an engaging fandom, its even better when there are differing opinions so there can be more discussions on a less than talked about genre as a whole.
Everyone has their own opinions and thats fine BUT if you give this show a 3 stars or less I have a shotgun ready to use :) Because speaking seriously I had zero expectations for this show and now is one of my favorites, great story with a good mix of comedy and seriousness, solid cast of rangers (Akira is still my current favorite sixth ranger) and the fantastic villans.......those suits and mechas are a different story.
I went into this show with very little expectations too and it ended up being better far better than it had any right to being. I seriously ending up really liking all 6 rangers of this series far more than I should (well, some more than others but still) and I also love the aesthetics of the show’s main villains and even liked some of them as characters themselves especially Schwarz, to the point where he is now among my top favorite villains of Super Sentai albeit sharing the same spot as Grey from Jetman, and I can see and understand why they are, arguably, the best part of most of ToQger. I also got a real kick out of a Couch Gag in the show’s opening involving a ToQger , which later extends to this series’ sixth ranger, falling over after running from an explosion and sometimes this happens to all of them at the same time. And while I wasn’t too keen on the train theme but god damn, a lot of it is well-executed especially during the show’s second half.
I really like how you dig more into spoiler territory to comment about the most interesting parts of the show, while not revealing everything to your audience. I think this is a way better balance compare to other Sentai reviews where you want to talk about something really badly but you decide not to because it could spoil the audience. This is one of your best reviews yet, good job Kaiju.
It really depends on what there is to talk about. I've done this aspect before with Shinkenger and Gingaman due to Kaoru and Hyuga's return because I felt they were too vital to not discuss, so a spoiler bit was the only way to do it. The same was here for ToQGer.
16:25, also...Shin Nagahama was once a one-off kid in Zyuranger. The one where the blue monster Goda was tricked by Bandora due to its eggs being stolen/eaten by Totpatt and Bukkaback and the Zyurangers were framed for that. 19:45, I like the Shadow Line villains. They're like the Sonozaki family from W but only way more distant from each other since they can do whatever they want. 23:04,XD 24:04, not to mention...I miss villains like him tbh. 28:09,XD 35:10, XD Freakin' chickens. 40:20, XD He does that a lot. He's just that dedicated to the role.

You only judge by characters and episodes but the character element itself is not the most special thing. The beauty of the film lies in the plot, a plot throughout from beginning to end; and the meaning of the film, the message that the film wants to convey. What Super Sentai needs is not a diverse character line or an overly complicated plot (we have Kamen Rider), or top action scenes. The most important for this franchise is the lessons, messages and meanings that are sent to us. ToQger did a great job, the film is simply a journey of 5 children who want to return to their homeland, to their family, to the familiar tree. This kind of reminds me of Flashman. The film also installs a lot of meaningful and great lessons. The fact that Akira is a general who has the ability to call rain and steal children's Imagination bags, the reason is really naive but also very reasonable. I think Koba's last work in Sentai is really an excellent series, simply because it means so much to us. You have spent a childhood with worry-free days. If you've grown up, forgotten Imagination, then watching ToQger will remind you of the old days. So I really like ToQger, I think it deserves to be one of the top 5 best Super Sentai series.
LOVE Toqger! There is a lot to love, a lot to discuss & a lot of ideas for an adaption. Even as far as a dark take on it, which I did make a video of. #IMAGINATION!
honestly for what it is i enjoy TOQger a lot, this series is basicly kamen rider gaim but sentai version where the beginning seem childish at first but after the first 15 episode the story improved a lot for me (sure they may be the joke is too kiddy at time but i am watching a kid show after all)
As much as I love Yasuko Kobayashi's writing, her comedy is very hit or miss. Ranging from cleverly written jokes with perfect timing and delivery, to Genta mugging at the camera, Hiromu being scared of chickens and Den-O in general.
I'll definitely give it a shot, after my cancer ordeal I'm more inclined to check this out to judge it by its own merits and find things to like or dislike from my own perspective. In first impressions, I do like the design of the outfits, and thr villains, the grunts look freeakin badass. The color swap aspect is actually a pretty cool concept, it reminds me of something similar in the comic series Power Pack, about a team of young siblings that gained exceptional powers and at one point they were actually able to swap powers with each other during combat. The Orange Ranger actually seems pretty cool, even that weird Monkey puppet on the Conducter I find adorable... that's largely cuz I myself own a plush monkey that I got as a get well gift during my cancer ordeal.
It’s funny thinking that if only the kids can see the rainbow line trains meanwhile the adults don’t so wen the monster grow the adults just see giant monsters doing sparks until they explode
Do you know that the BoonBoomger crossover with ToQGer is coming this week, and we know thanks to the preview that ToQ Red isn’t the only one that’s returning, so are two other familiar faces.
The one thing I can’t help but think when I see toqger was it took them till 2014 to do a Sentai themed after trains, given all the train themed mechs they did in past shows I just can’t help but wonder why it took so long, makes me glad we had the same thought.

Great review! I’ve always been curious about ToQger, due to its novelty among other Sentai series. After watching this though, I do believe I will skip it. The inconsistent writing, immaturity of the Rangers, and occasional boring episodes isn’t something I think I could overlook.
Not gonna lie there is that one episode where the toqger had their rank, train rails and belt removed on their suit it look awful. Imagine what the other Sentai group look like when all of their designed suit got removed and only having no details or mold.
On the other hand, toqger mechs were a big turnoff for me but idk how they will make it look good and not mess. Theyve done 5 trains into 1 in GoGoV and 1 train mech in magiranger. I guess kyoryuger is too big of influence that every mechs past kyoryuger needs to have that kyoryuger magic
I honestly like to think that one reason this season isn’t adapted for power rangers is because of the potential problems that could come from the toys and how the red train can fold up, and we all know how the scene goes

It's a joke I wish I had put into the review. In fact, I need to make some corrections, so I'm still considering a director's cut of this review. It just got lost in the shuffle of life.
Toqger is a mixed bag for me too tbh some of it is good and some of it is downright terrible. my favorite episode is definitely the one where zaram reforms.
For me, Toqger is easily my favourite Sentai from the "post-Gokiager era", even if I wouldn't exactly call it a top-tier Sentai in general. But for real, imagination is such an interesting theme, and it also has a decent charm to it. However, this feels like the reverse of Kyoryuger, where I was more invested with the villains than the heroes, but I still found the heroes to be perfectly alright.
@@thepayne7862then again, there are probably other examples of sentais where the villains are the ones who steal the show, but at least the heroes in toqger are given something to work towards, even if they are not the most intriguing or the most mature.
For the past 5 to 6 years i've been making my way through every single Super Sentai ever released. Every time I start a new series I am not really sure if I am going to like it but every time eachs series has something I really like about it. Currently watching this series close to finishing it but it's opening theme song is quickly becoming one of my favorite Super Sentai opening theme songs. I love Akira's harmonica theme song, I am enjoying the villains, really like their designs. I also like the Ranger designs,, the Conductor with his hand puppet I find delightly odd. When I watched the first episode and saw Wagon for the first time, I was like why do they have this oddly sexy robot with pouty lips? Also in episode 42 pretty cool they have a special appearnce by the band that performs the theme song. I saw others saying that it wasn't adapted into a power rangers series due to the trains. I think I understand why in Japan trains get singificanlty more use for traveling around their country, on an every day basis. But here in the U.S sure they are still used for travelling but not as big a part of our culture any more. All in all i had a blast watching this series.

With all the color swaping motif it wuold be cool an paint motif sentai where the main antagonist is an blob of living evil colors that have's to posses an host so he can fight and the monsters have look diferent depending of the host the villain is usinng at the moment (bassically having monsters that looks like there where grafitis or monsters that look like they where painted by an gothic artist and so on)
I honestly have no idea anymore. I believe the episode featured Pink watching movies and then re-enacting the movie the next day. So for that scene, she watched a movie about ninjas.
I love Shadow Line a lot, but I always wanted to know their origins which were never told during the season. I also want to know why the Shadow Monsters are based on objects, are they possessed objects like the Jigens and the Orgs, or are they like the Gorma that are objects just because ?
I find it funny that this is the only sentai that justifies why the MCs act like children all the time. The problem is that, especially in the last decade of sentai, almost all of the teams act that way. I guess that's what works with the japanese audience, but that's the one aspect i really like more in PR where characters actually behave more according to their age (and depending of the season of course)
Yeah, that's one of the reasons I had initially quit the show after 5 episodes back when it first aired as I was tired of the childish ranger cast. And then I had people like 30 weeks later saying, "Well they are kids," as if I was magically supposed to know that at episode 5.
There is a good criticism I saw in regards to the rangers being kid's twist. In that they still don't act their age even when taking the twist into account. With the generally coming across more six year olds than the ten year olds they are meant to be.
Toqger Was The First Sentai I Fully Watched As It Was Airing Which I Have Been Doing Ever Since I Would Have Liked If The Colors Had A Power Of Some Kind Cause Just Getting To Use The Others Weapons Could Have Just Done So With Out Changing Colors

It was sad to see ToQger not get adapting because of Nickelodeon's stupid decision of splitting a single PR season into two parts and skipped some Sentai seasons would've make great PR seasons (like Zyuohger, Kyuranger, Lupinranger vs. Patranger and possibly Kiramager) which make me wish Power Rangers shouldn't aired on Nickelodeon back in the 2010s and would've aired on Cartoon Network instead.
@@zeokingsilver Hasbro has been quiet on what is going on with Power Rangers. All we do know is that all future seasons are going strait to Netflix. The contract with Nickelodeon expires in January, and Hasbro is moving all its IPs exclusively to Netflix world wide.
When it comes to adapting Sentai for Power Rangers season, this one I feel would be a little difficult, mostly for the theme alone, since trains are a more common mode of transportation in Japan than in America. Then again, seeing how every past Power Rangers season since Dino Charge has often used original footage rather than always relying on stock footage from Sentai, then maybe it could be possible? I don't really know myself. Once Dino Fury wraps up, which season do you think should be adapted next for Power Rangers? ToQger, Zyuohger, Kyuranger, Lupinranger vs Patranger, or Kiramager?
I don't think Kiramager would work since ToQGer didn't, though, Kira does have the advantage of having some spectacular camerawork. I do think Kyuranger would probably be the easiest to adapt right now, but we'll have to see what next year's Sentai series brings.
This show and Kamen Rider gaim were the first shows that got me interested in tokusatsu anime. I just started watching them both and this time I won’t stop to watch any showa series or shows preceding gaim in the heisei era. The reason I did that was because I didn’t know where to start with Kamen Rider where with Super Sentai I started with toqger because It was a show that wasn’t adapted into power rangers

See my issue is Zed could have been reasoned with and handled peacefully. He never wanted to hurt anyone and was always kinda forced to. Plus the Rainbow Line are the true villains as they kidnapped, memory wiped and forcefully aged children to be their soldiers without any kind of consent.

I never understood why when I was watching reviews of this series people referred to Miss Grita as a demonic baby even though clearly as evident by the black dog nose and bulldog shaped muzzle, clearly her motif is hellhound.
Not sure yet. I'm pretty much done with Sentai for the rest of the year, so I've got a lot of time to think it over. It'll probably just depend on what I'm in the mood for come early next year.
I like Toqkuger I want it to be a power ranger adaption if I was to write it. It would be dark and happy at the same time and would be called Rescue Rail force
U know toqger was the 1st train theme super sentai season and I enjoyed a lot of it like the villians and right was kinda an ok red ranger also fun fact dekaranger was going to be a train theme sentai season but that didn't happen as it was given to toqger also the train mech would kinda remind u of tge go go v mech grand liner as grand liner was a train mech just like the toqger meches and I like the rainbows in this series

Toqger is one of those Sentai shows I didn't expect to like but ended up loving it. Easily one of the best post-Gokaiger shows to come out.

The villains in Toqger remind me a lot of the villains from Dairanger in terms of aesthetics, especially the foot soldiers.
Yeah, there is a lot of good going for them. I would have loved to have seen the Shadow Line be in a 90s show.

That's how I felt. I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I ever thought I would.
As much as I love Yasuko Kobayashi's writing, her comedy is very hit or miss. Ranging from cleverly written jokes with perfect timing and delivery, to Genta mugging at the camera, Hiromu being scared of chickens and Den-O in general.

I'll definitely give it a shot, after my cancer ordeal I'm more inclined to check this out to judge it by its own merits and find things to like or dislike from my own perspective. In first impressions, I do like the design of the outfits, and thr villains, the grunts look freeakin badass. The color swap aspect is actually a pretty cool concept, it reminds me of something similar in the comic series Power Pack, about a team of young siblings that gained exceptional powers and at one point they were actually able to swap powers with each other during combat. The Orange Ranger actually seems pretty cool, even that weird Monkey puppet on the Conducter I find adorable... that's largely cuz I myself own a plush monkey that I got as a get well gift during my cancer ordeal.

I haven't paid attention to Boon since the second arc ended, but I did hear there was going to be a crossover.
The one thing I can’t help but think when I see toqger was it took them till 2014 to do a Sentai themed after trains, given all the train themed mechs they did in past shows I just can’t help but wonder why it took so long, makes me glad we had the same thought.
I'm really surprised it had taken that long as well.

I honestly like to think that one reason this season isn’t adapted for power rangers is because of the potential problems that could come from the toys and how the red train can fold up, and we all know how the scene goes

Toqger is a mixed bag for me too tbh some of it is good and some of it is downright terrible. my favorite episode is definitely the one where zaram reforms.
I loved everything with Akira.
For me, Toqger is easily my favourite Sentai from the "post-Gokiager era", even if I wouldn't exactly call it a top-tier Sentai in general. But for real, imagination is such an interesting theme, and it also has a decent charm to it. However, this feels like the reverse of Kyoryuger, where I was more invested with the villains than the heroes, but I still found the heroes to be perfectly alright.

Yeah in this show I agree, I definitely got pretty invested into the vilains, kind of like i did in Dairanger.

For the past 5 to 6 years i've been making my way through every single Super Sentai ever released.
Every time I start a new series I am not really sure if I am going to like it but every time eachs series has something I really like about it.
Currently watching this series close to finishing it but it's opening theme song is quickly becoming one of my favorite Super Sentai opening theme songs.
I love Akira's harmonica theme song, I am enjoying the villains, really like their designs.
I also like the Ranger designs,, the Conductor with his hand puppet I find delightly odd.
When I watched the first episode and saw Wagon for the first time, I was like why do they have this oddly sexy robot with pouty lips?
Also in episode 42 pretty cool they have a special appearnce by the band that performs the theme song.
I saw others saying that it wasn't adapted into a power rangers series due to the trains.
I think I understand why in Japan trains get singificanlty more use for traveling around their country, on an every day basis.
But here in the U.S sure they are still used for travelling but not as big a part of our culture any more.
All in all i had a blast watching this series.

I love Shadow Line a lot, but I always wanted to know their origins which were never told during the season. I also want to know why the Shadow Monsters are based on objects, are they possessed objects like the Jigens and the Orgs, or are they like the Gorma that are objects just because ?
Yeah, that could have really elevated them a lot and improved the show.
I regret skipping this one when it was airing. This is the only Sentai that I skipped since I started with Kyoryuger.

I find it funny that this is the only sentai that justifies why the MCs act like children all the time. The problem is that, especially in the last decade of sentai, almost all of the teams act that way. I guess that's what works with the japanese audience, but that's the one aspect i really like more in PR where characters actually behave more according to their age (and depending of the season of course)
Yeah, that's one of the reasons I had initially quit the show after 5 episodes back when it first aired as I was tired of the childish ranger cast. And then I had people like 30 weeks later saying, "Well they are kids," as if I was magically supposed to know that at episode 5.
I guess that episode 1 mostly because what the monsters said when he was confused why red was in the train

There is a good criticism I saw in regards to the rangers being kid's twist. In that they still don't act their age even when taking the twist into account. With the generally coming across more six year olds than the ten year olds they are meant to be.

For the most part, yes. There's a lot of PR series I highly enjoy, but I would still pick Sentai over them. Except for Go-Onger, I'll take RPM over that dumpster fire any day.

It was sad to see ToQger not get adapting because of Nickelodeon's stupid decision of splitting a single PR season into two parts and skipped some Sentai seasons would've make great PR seasons (like Zyuohger, Kyuranger, Lupinranger vs. Patranger and possibly Kiramager) which make me wish Power Rangers shouldn't aired on Nickelodeon back in the 2010s and would've aired on Cartoon Network instead.

Hasbro has been quiet on what is going on with Power Rangers. All we do know is that all future seasons are going strait to Netflix. The contract with Nickelodeon expires in January, and Hasbro is moving all its IPs exclusively to Netflix world wide.
When it comes to adapting Sentai for Power Rangers season, this one I feel would be a little difficult, mostly for the theme alone, since trains are a more common mode of transportation in Japan than in America. Then again, seeing how every past Power Rangers season since Dino Charge has often used original footage rather than always relying on stock footage from Sentai, then maybe it could be possible? I don't really know myself. Once Dino Fury wraps up, which season do you think should be adapted next for Power Rangers?
ToQger, Zyuohger, Kyuranger, Lupinranger vs Patranger, or Kiramager?
I don't think Kiramager would work since ToQGer didn't, though, Kira does have the advantage of having some spectacular camerawork.
I do think Kyuranger would probably be the easiest to adapt right now, but we'll have to see what next year's Sentai series brings.

This show and Kamen Rider gaim were the first shows that got me interested in tokusatsu anime. I just started watching them both and this time I won’t stop to watch any showa series or shows preceding gaim in the heisei era. The reason I did that was because I didn’t know where to start with Kamen Rider where with Super Sentai I started with toqger because It was a show that wasn’t adapted into power rangers

See my issue is Zed could have been reasoned with and handled peacefully. He never wanted to hurt anyone and was always kinda forced to. Plus the Rainbow Line are the true villains as they kidnapped, memory wiped and forcefully aged children to be their soldiers without any kind of consent.
Interesting way of seeing it, not that you are wrong, but I highly doubt the Shadow Line would have stopped.

I never understood why when I was watching reviews of this series people referred to Miss Grita as a demonic baby even though clearly as evident by the black dog nose and bulldog shaped muzzle, clearly her motif is hellhound.

U know toqger was the 1st train theme super sentai season and I enjoyed a lot of it like the villians and right was kinda an ok red ranger also fun fact dekaranger was going to be a train theme sentai season but that didn't happen as it was given to toqger also the train mech would kinda remind u of tge go go v mech grand liner as grand liner was a train mech just like the toqger meches and I like the rainbows in this series
