- Due to a copyright claim with Saban, I have had to make a slight change to this review in this special TH-cam edition.
After the wreck that was Ohranger, Toei hired comedy writer Yoshio Urasawa to take the driver's seat of their next Sentai series. Thus, Gekisou Sentai Carranger (Power Rangers Turbo in the US) was born. This series received great wreck-ignition for being a parody of Super Sentai as it brought new life into a tire-d franchise by constantly making fun of the various tropes the series had endured in its 20 year lifespan. However, did this series shift new ideas into the franchise or did it crash and burn? Watch this review to find out.

Wow the irony this season was loved in Japan while Power Rangers Turbo almost destroyed the franchise
After I had reviewed the show an interview did come out with a producer stating that Carranger was not the series that stopped the franchise from being canceled.
Brilliant show. The humor is on point and natural and not forced or cringey like certain Sentai I can name. I consider this to be riding the line between parody and satire. But its very well done.
Agreed and that's exactly what the show was meant to be, a parody, compared to say Go-Onger, that wanted to be a normal serious show, but... yeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah… no. :-)

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork while car ranger is meant to be comedic and parodic by design, it is still part of the overall sentai canon unlike say Kanpai Senshi After V or Akibaranger, which are parodies that poke fun at sentai while also honoring it in a manner that isn't part of the overall sentai canon.

Akibaranger is the best unofficial parody imo but Carranger is the best official parody and comedy imo. I think it helps out when you have a main writer Mr. Urasawa who wrote the TOEI Comedy for 18 years.

So I found out the reason White Racer was replaced was due to the fact that the first actress was in "poor health" after her first appearance and could not return, so they got a replacement.

I hated Turbo back when it first aired and I still hated Turbo when I rewatched it two years ago. Carranger, on the other hand, is in my top 10 favorite Sentai series.

That would have been a nice connection and probably improved Go-Onger somewhat.
I'd still disagree with improveing go onger but I agree that it would be a pretty nice connection to carranger it would also make sense of how machine word came in to be

Sadly Yuka Motohashi best known as Natsumi a.k.a yellow racer from carranger and sonona from donbrothers had died at age 46 after she battle from cancer.

It's actually not true: Jetman saved Super Sentai from being canceled due to Fiveman's poor performance. While Ohranger was bad, they had good toy sales.
I talk about that in my Jetman review. There's been a few shows that has saved Sentai.
I just finished my watch of this sentai yesterday, I enjoyed it. Natsumi I think is the pretty one. I also appreciate the fact that despite this being a parody season, they didn't hesitate to let them roughed up and bleed. And I did some research our White Racer's first actress had to step down due health problems. She us doing better now.
Oh it is truly is amazing at how much of Carranger was not dumbed down despite having a silly plotline.

What do you think of Power Rangers Turbo aka American adaptation of Carranger? They changed the villains to become less interesting from their Japanese counterparts.
I hate it. I find the tone to be quite jarring. It also doesn't help that the rangers just randomly change from Zeo power to Car power without any rhyme nor reason for it. Also, all of the momentum that had occurred with Zedd and Rita in the finale of Zeo was lost when all we got was a Rita cameo in the movie stating they quit trying to conquer Earth. If that was the case, then why go through all of that effort to defeat Mondo in the first place?
I also don't like how they just up and change the cast of the show out of the blue. There was nothing at all that hinted they were going to leave. It just comes up as if it was meant to be some major plot twist. Finally, there were other things like Bulk and Skull's adventures to cops again, then chimps, and finally invisible men, Delphina being no help at all nor having any sort of character arc beyond her initial, "My sister disappeared when I was a kid," etc.
I find Turbo to be significantly better after the cast change. First half was all "OMGZ IT'S A BOMB" and it felt like most of the old cast was just done.
I didn't like how abrupt the new cast was done though. It was just "monster defeated and then hey, you're our new chosen rangers, bye." It just came out of nowhere and it doesn't help that I hated Ashley and Carlos.

It's tied with Go-Onger as being the worst Sentai series I have ever watched.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I liked Kyuranger, Lucky isn't as annoying when the show progresses, and two of my favourite soundtracks (Miraculous Star!! Shishi Red, Orion and Legened of Houou Soldier) It's also the first sentai to use synthesizers in the opening soundtrack and,as if we haven't seen enough of dekaranger, has one episode which is a crossover with Gavan and Dekaranger.
Unfortunately, it did not have a crossover with Zyuohger. I would've love to see the rangers motifs clash (ie, Aquaila pink and Zyuoh eagle, Swordfish yellow and Zyuoh Shark, Shishi Red and Zyuoh Lion and tiger and Ookami blue and Zyuoh world, wolf mode.)
I'd have to disagree as I thought Lucky never got better. In fact, he got worse because he knew he was in a TV show and could do nothing wrong.

I feel like where Power Rangers failed with Turbo was that they were trying to be serious with adapting Carranger when Carranger's overall tone was silly.
Agreed, but having a Power Rangers series be super silly just wouldn't fit, especially when it was carrying over the story and characters from the previous seasons.

Yep, and it was glorious.
This was the first series to be produced by Shigenori Takatera (who also produced Megaranger, Gingaman, Kamen Rider Kuuga, and the first 29 episodes of Kamen Rider Hibiki). If you get the chance, take a look at the last two shows. They are amazing.
I've seen them both and loved them. Well, those 29 episodes to Hibiki until the show went off the rails into generic village.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Yeah, they changed the style for no reason. Takatera's style merged well with Hibiki. Takatera was a producer who always thought outside the box. We all know that you didn't like Turboranger, but Takatera fixed the mis-steps and parody it with Caaarrrranger! Megaranger also fixed Turboranger in terms of the high school setting. Gingaman was an homage to Zyuranger, with the villains being space pirates.
Kuuga is my favorite work of his, because Takatera managed to make a dead brand, and revived it for a new era. Every character had something to do, they develop, they interact with other characters. Something that Faiz tried to do with their side characters but failed. Because, they don't feel necessary towards the story. Hibiki's first 29 episodes were very artistic, and also well-written. Takatera created a character going through the struggles of life, high school, and being himself. Toei took that development and went to genetic-land that would later be Neo-Saban.
Takatera always had a successful series. He always took risks. For example, Junki Takegami, head writer for Megaranger, had never written a toku series, not even Metal Heroes. But Takatera took that risk of giving some new blood and fresh start. He did that Yasuko Kobayashi (head writer for Gingaman), Naruhisa Arakawa (head writer for Kuuga), and Tsuyoshi Kida (one of the head writers for the first 29 episodes of Hibiki). Takatera was very talented in his run in Toei, before leaving in 2006. But, I never got tired of his work.

Just finished this one. Great allies and fun heroes. I liked the main villians the most, and my favorite episode was probably the baseball one. The second half of the series felt a little long, but the end was great.
The baseball episode is so damn funny.
I don't mind Turbo! Sure it's rather cheesy and forgettable but despite that it's not bad! In fact one of my favorite episodes of Turbo was the pizza episode. What are your thoughts on that episode?

I like the idea of that if zonette NEVER wanted to see a giant firework the bozokous would just go away to the next planet on the list after being defeated in the first episode claiming revenge instead of trying to continuously destroy the planet(at least until bocohaus noticed that one planet was in the middle of his road and forced the bozokus to go back to finish the job)

Carranger was super funny and fun and I think I see why people like this show. Like every episode I was laughing and when it got serious I was on the edge of my seat. I especially love the meta references. I my favorite character is Naoki since I'm the youngest and I just realized that Justin is my favorite in Turbo and I realize I like both the sentai character and the counterpart. Huh weird. Anyway, I also did like Natsumi and I admit I had a tiny crush on her. My favorite episode is actually two actually. The pizza episode and the episode with Naoki having to save a girl. And um I think that's it.

Deputy Leader Zelmoda vs. Elgar is so much different from it's US version vs. Sentai Version.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Zelmoda has an evil face, while Elgar as a little goofy looking face. You can tell what footage there used in Turbo either it's the US footage or Sentai footage, it's exact the same thing for Rygog's image was redesigned from Gekisou Sentai Carranger. The Sentai footage showed Rygog with a more menacing face, but it seemed to be made on a cheaper budget.

Ahhh,this show made me remembered how not bad Turbo was to be honest. There were bad PR seasons but Turbo,I remember enjoying it and it wasn't that bad compared to what we got now with the Neo Saban era a.k.a the turd era.
Natsumi will always be my bae in this show. I love me a working girl.
Also,Red Racer is FREAKIN' KEN MASTERS from Street Fighter. Guess Capcom and Toei go hand in hand when it comes to connections between the 2 if you think about it. Noboru Sugimura,Reuben Langdon,Erin Cahill,Eric from Time Force,etc.

lol That was another issue. They hinted in like the first few episodes that Divatox and Delphina were siblings, but then never did anything at all with that plot. Hell, Delphina was absolutely worthless.

Carranger was vastly more enjoyable than Ohranger, which had it's share of excellent episodes and some truly baffling ones.
Erring on the side of silliness from the beginning, it does so without plumbing the depths of a talking hamster that leaps off the sofa and urinates on the ranger it repects the least (Ohranger never went that far either but there were times it came close).
Indeed, a Sentai hasn't given me this many laughs since Akibaranger. I hope we get the occasional season like this every now and again.
Signalman and his family were the highlight of this show for me. Torn between his duty and his beloved family (and with the occasional thirst for cider), he reminds me of myself in some ways.
Of the villains Zelmoda makes me laugh (as opposed to his Power Rangers Turbo counterpart, who was insufferable) but Grotch has to be my favourite with both a funny design and a voice that cracks me up with every syllable.
The monster designs take me back to the days of Gorenger and JAKQ - they're not similar in theme as such but they're varied and really imaginative looking.
The music is distinct from that of much of what I've heard in Sentai before and is a core part of the experience.
When I've seen every season I'd definitely put Carranger on my "Watch Again" list. And now I have a craving for Imo Yokan. I hear it has a consistency similar to Turkish Delight, but looks like C4 in airport scanners.
I like your comparison with Akibaranger because I always call Akibaranger the modern Carranger for adults.
Well best for me to watch this before I go to bed. I had a nightmare after watching Karmen Rider...and I do mean the first series.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Well their are elements of horror in the first KR series. Shocker loves turning off the flurence lights and useing night colored lights to scare their prey. Plus certain monsters have poisons that decompose their victicms.
I really enjoy carrranger the episodes are great there funny fast paced and overall great if I was forced to watch a Sentai show to rewatch 2 times or more I'd choose Carrranger

Yeah, I want to watch this Sentai in full soon. Are there any Mega Man X fans here? If so, you might recognize Dappu's voice, Mari Maruta. I knew the moment I saw my first Carranger clip (the RV Robo's early formation) that this was X4's Split Mushroom. Surprisingly, she doesn't have too many credits as far as her page on Behind The Voice Actors says! However, she's done a lot of dubbing from English material. Heck, she's Alpha 6 in Power Rangers! Oh, and Ninja Turtle Venus de Milo in the crossover episode, but I don't think people like to talk about that.
I am totally a Mega Man X fan (have a retrospective I did a few months ago on the series), but I did not realize that was Split Mushroom since I only play the game in English. That is pretty awesome.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork, I know, right?! I was delighted! Actually, she's still in the English version. I learned from the speedrunning community that each of the eight bosses kept their Japanese voices. Any lines that are "fully Japanese" are removed from the game, probably to maintain the illusion that only the main cast is fully dubbed. Ironically, that's why the English game is considered faster, as only English-speaking bosses have pre-fight speaking lines! There's a compilation of what's different in Rockman X4 out somewhere on TH-cam. Otherwise, you'll still hear Mari say, "Ow! Ow! Ow!" when you use Web Spider's weapon. It's hilarious, really.

No idea as I never watched his review of the show. I didn't even know he hated the series, but then, he also hates Blade which I think is the greatest Kamen Rider series ever made thus far.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork He hasnt, its just sonething he mentions alot. He's got a lot of hate for Carranger. And Den-O. And Neo Saban Power Rangers. I think Shinta gets too caught up in logistics of a show.
I don't like Den-O either, but Carranger is just down right fantastic because it's so fun.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork It's probably due to the fact that Des Shinta has a personal taste in Tokusatsu shows that he likes and dislikes. I mean, yeah, it's been years since I have seen Kamen Rider Den-O. But, honestly...it's for me to just stick with the TV shows and avoid all of the Den-O-related movies. Since, there's like *SO MANY FUCKING DEN-O MOVIES!!! SO MANY FUCKING DEN-O MOVIES!!!*

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I just made that out, because Hasbro bought PR. I still set on my opinion that SS should be cancelled. But I love the fact that the 90s was a great Decade. As for 2010 : "Onore Dickeido".
Thankfully this is wrong as the 44th Super Sentai series is Mashin Sentai Kiramager and if you've watched so far NO I don't agree that the Super Sentai series should be cancelled. If anything Kiramager has rejuvenated the franchise.
Sentai is always the best when it comes self awareness and parody. Carranger, Akibaranger and Gobuster vs Gobuster are the proof.

So long time ago there was this website that had Ultraman Kamen Rider Super Sentai in metal hero episodes, but they were all English dubbed so I got to watch car the Rangers in English even though I think the people who made the website provided the English voice for a lot of them but it was still fun to watch to watch

@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I think they were there was only a couple of shows that was English dubbed, and I think the rest was Fandubed anyways it was still a really good website and it was how I got to watch a lot of the shows in English even the ones who didn't have an English dub part
The people that made power rangers Turbo never said woh was the phantom ranger but In carranger it was Dappus dad in Disguise as vrv master and Zonnette sister was the White racer And at the end of the show the villains team up with the rangers the fight the highway character

Why do you hate pr turbo
Terrible villians, too many unresolved plot points, getting rid of the older rangers without any sort of warning, Ashley and Carlos, Bulk and Skull randomly being cops again only to quit and get turned into monkeys, Lt Stone randomly being a cop again and then becoming Ernie 2.0, the rangers giving up the most powerful crystal in the universe for car power, Zedd and Rita being asleep for the entire show, too much over the top silliness, the list goes on.

Oh wow, yeah, I guess that was after the election debacle. I thought it was sooner than that, but I guess that makes sense since Zyuranger came out just shortly after starting the channel in 2015.
Carranger barely did better than Ohranger in the ratings (and was doing worse until the second half) and didn’t have nearly as good toy sales (in fact adjusting for inflation Ohranger has the best toy sales in the franchise from what there is record of (Jetman onward)
It’s also long since been confirmed Jetman saved the series not Carranger
Yes and no. Jetman saved it for a while and Megaranger really helped with the time change. I don't recall ever saying in my review it was a definite thing.
Given the kind of show carranger is you do have to give saban credit that he tried to make turbo a serious season, even though turbo still sucks
I'd say the biggest issues of Turbo have nothing to do with the Carranger footage though.
