    There’s NO excuse to not have a calculator on any computer! Apple has forced all of their customers to put up with stupid ads just to do basic calculation on an iPad. That’s a crime to humanity. Saying they needed to amp it up is just a stupid excuse.
    They now have AI, and found a cool feature they wanted on the iPad, and someone said “Hey guys, I think we forgot that we don’t actually have a calculator to put these features on the iPad.”

    David you're not alone in the handwriting thing, I do inventory for a living and often our customers have to give us a list of item numbers in quantities to enter, and I've become really good at being able to decipher between numbers that people often get lazy about writing. such as the 4 verses 9 thing, 2 vs Z, S vs 5,... sometimes 7 looks like a 1 if they don't take long enough on the top of the number or a 2 if they let the pen drag on the way to the next character. usually it's because they're trying to do it quickly, but there's a big difference between a 1 and a 7... especially if the item is expensive, where in pharmacy if you're talking about dosages, that difference could be the difference between somebody living or dying... fortunately the medical industry has gotten away from handwritten scripts, right?

The idea of promoting “touch first” which is the intent of the iPad should be obvious. In my opinion, if they had placed the same idea of calculator into the iPad (of which anyone could have compiled and installed from example code from Apple if they so desired), it would have lessened or even removed the impetus behind the pursuit to introduce what they finally did.

      Microsoft Math only can calculate one variable, you must provide all the formula (even the answer), and calculating just one variable as result, but in Apple model you can deffine 10 different variable and ask the result, you don't nees to tell the result too (and also Microsoft only can tell you the answer if no more than 1 variable in the formula, so it's way more limited in usage)

    Me:
    3^2 + 4^2 = x^2
    x = ___
    iPad: Yes I can solve this.
    x = 3
    .... OK, iPad. I don't know where the interpretation went wrong, but not a good sign! It's too bad I can't upload a pic.

    As a physics and astronomy teacher Apple WAY over promised and under delivered on this. They touted it as a miracle physics engine in their Keynote and it can't even do simple fractions if you put more than one thing in a numerator or denominator. Absolute garbage compared to marketing. Back to putting exact numbers into Excel or general equations into a math program for me as this is 100% useless as a feature.

    Texas Instruments graphing calculaters in the 90s had equation solver, and that had a very weak processor. So, Apple recreated old graphing calculators and that is what they needed to figure out to release an app? The excuse given still doesn't hold up as a real reason for it to take so long for a calculator app.
    The truth is that they didn't see a need for one.

    Let me preface this by saying that I had backed Apple's delay of the calculator all these years based on the justification math in gen AI just simply was not yet possible until now. But The calculator will damage students' learning. Not only does it not show them how it arrived at that answer, but it is literally worse than Wolfram, less capable than Wolfram, it just visually has a neat gimmick with the handwriting. But it literally cannot perform any calculation beyond elementary math that any decently intelligent student already can do. Useless. Utterly useless

    They couldn’t have had a calculator with the first iPad and the added this feature later? Why did they actually not add a calculator until now? I think they thought it looked/felt bad on the big screen, which means they just went against their own judgment since it’s just the iPhone calculator blown up. Apple folded.

    Honestly, it's so bad that this is a topic to talk about in 2024.
    And is it just me or did anyone else try something like this on their android phones some 12 years ago.
    I can't recall the name of the calculator app, but it had same feature. Not as smooth obviously cause of the time and hardware then, but it did exactly the same thing and it was on an android phone, not tablet.
    So let's all just take a chill pill and stop unnecessarily hyping Apple.
    This is why they feel they can charge anything.

      Microsoft has has Math Solver for Android and IOS since at least 2019. In many ways, it's smarter and can tell you step by step how to solve an equation.
      Both apps just use simple OXR scanning, which has been around for many decades. So, this could even have been done several decades ago.

      @@akyhne yeah.. You're right..
      I guess cause the marketing was done by Apple and cause of the unnecessary hype people have for them, they make having a calculator app into something else.. Hehe.
      Well, I don't blame them, I applaud Apple as they do marketing more than anything else..
      Other than what they did with the M-series chip for commercial use cases, marketing is the next big skill or quality they have.
      Why they always get people..

      @@neodidi Apple did the clever thing to add a paint app to their calculator. But the drawing of the girl playing table tennis on the Apple demo, brings nothing to the calculation. It's nothing but a gimmick.

    • @neodidi
      @neodidi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@akyhne yeah.. Offcourse there will be gimmicks.. It's part of Apple's strategy of marketing.. Gets people talking and talking and eventually give some people the idea that they might actually need that.
      And those few people who would use it no matter how inconvenient would tweet or make a video and hence.. More marketing.
      I actually do admire their marketing skill.. I try to learn a thing or two.. But yeah, other than their macbooks, I don't see anything else as innovating or ground breaking.

When apple do these things it pushes the other companies to follow suit pushing the whole industry forward. I am confused why being able to customise you Home Screen is seen as so negative considering other devices can already do this... so why is it a negative when apple do it ?? strange

    Guys... have you ever heard about OCR?! It's ancient technology.
    Apple jyst uses basic OCR to capture, what's written on the screen. This could have been done in the 80s ffs!
    And both Microsoft abd another company has had an app for Android, that could do thus for years, as well as OneNote in Windows could.
    It's not rocket science! Not even clise!

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      5:15 Exactly! And that's why it's of no use for 99% of all people. You need to be able to make the equations.
      For everyone else, they are better off, just using a simple calculator.
      And for the 1%, many would still just use a calculator, cause that's how they learned in university how to do the calculations (or in a spreadsheet).
      It's a gimmick!
