I wouldnt even worry about getting 12 inches with this. This is the back up gun to your back up gun or whatever you want to call it. I'd only consider using this at contact distance no more than 2 arm lengths away and more than likely breathing distance. So even with 7-10 inches of penetration you are hitting brain matter at that distance. And if you can only pop them in the bell you can still reach the vertebrate depending on where you shot and the point of the muzzle.
These NAA videos have really helped me figure out what to use. I’ll either be buying an NAA BUG OUT, or an NAA Sidewinder. It’s a tough choice, but at least I know the .22LR is an adequate gun for self defense. Again, these videos seemed to make my choice of ammunition easier.
I have one of these too with the folding grip handle. I have put probably a couple hundred rounds through it. I agree with your assessment of the 36 grain mini mag. I have fired stingers from mine on occasion and while they get a little more velocity than the mini mags, they are not nearly as accurate. The mini mags group much better, and they aren't as erratic as the stingers are. It's also good to see the mini mags penetrate so well. I think I'll stick with these instead of the stingers. Good video!
This was super interesting to watch, the most in depth ammo review I've seen for this little revolver yet and much better than many that I've seen for a lot of other guns. Great job!
You certainly put a lot of time and effort into this. I appreciate your sharing your results with us! What about keyholing? From the looks of the gel blocks, this was not an issue. I have never seen one of these guns that didn't have serious keyholing issues.
I know I'm late to the party on this, but very much enjoyed the video and was surprised at the performance out of that 1" barrel. I'm surprised NAA doesn't do their own research and reach out to the clear winners for some kind of cross-brand promotion. Not surprised that the 36 grain bullet was the winner; I think that's the best balance of weight and velocity. Thanks for the hard work! Hope you'll do some revisits soon, perhaps including the CCI SGB .22 LR. There is an element to incapacitation that we really can't do any tests to determine - and that is, simply, the "pain" of being shot. A paper cut or stumping our toe will distract us for quite a long moment, so I wonder, for instance, if the segmented CCI, while not penetrating, wouldn't address more nerve endings? Of course, those who drag in the "250 pound guy on crack" would be making fun of ANY use of a less than .4x caliber, but I find it interest to know, at least on a pathological basis, what these mini-revolvers are capable of. Any gun is better than no gun; and a .22 in your pocket is better than a .40 in your sock drawer!
What an excellent video and discussion! ShootingTheBull410 is not just preaching opinions like many others on TH-cam. Everything is backed up by careful testing and comparisons. I fully agree that as a backup weapon, this mini is a lot better than having nothing, and in the hand of a practiced shooter, well-placed shots at close range can be devastating. The CCI .22LR Mini-Mag HP High-Velocity 36 Gr. Ammo is in stock at Walmart near me for $$7.47/ 100ct, as of 4/23/2015.
HEY, fantastic review. Just purchased the N.A.A. 22lr mini revolver. this helps me to choose the best ammo for the gun.I want something tiny to carry concealed, and I think i'm gonna like this pistol. once again, thanks.
Thanks so much for your review I love my little nna 22. Also thanks so much for the 380 ammo quest I bought a TCP because of that test and love it because there is some times when a glock 27 is just to big.
Can't believe you didn't include the full 40 grain CCI Velocitor in your tests. It's a great hunting cartridge but I'd love to know how deeply it would penetrate ballistic gel.
Honestly though, every ammo you tested (minus shotshells and colibri) would be fine considering the revolvers purpose and looking at it as something to hit the face or the chest at point blank to 5 yards. The distance between skin-inner skull or skin-sternum-heart/lungs is more than is well within the same distance they made it in the gel.
I'd expect it to be about like the aguila super maximums which are a 30 grain at 1700 vs 32 grain at 1640 for the Stangers. The short stubby >40 grain bullets just tumble too much and run out of energy before they can reach that 12" mark. And when they don't they go thru gel like butter and icepick thru the block. It federal made something like a short barrel 22 lr load with a 45-50 grain semi wadcutter I think it would be perfect for these revolvers.
@@rileyneufeld7001 I don't completely understand the 12 inch theory. If you are not overweight, most people are not one foot thick. Hard to believe that a bullet is useless if it doesn't go at least one foot in penetration. Most people's heart and major organs are only a few inches in their body, not a foot deep. I understand hydrostatic pressure and all that, but I think the penetration thing is over rated.
@@birage9885 12 inches of ballistics gel is not equal to 12 inches of human flesh. It's just a medium that we use to measure the rounds expansion and penetration. There is no way we can accurately replicate a human being with skin, bone, fat, muscle, tendons, ligaments organs etc. I've heard human skin is equivalent to 3 inches of ballistics gel. The calibration bb is shot at BB gun velocities and goes into the gel just under 4 inches yet it barely would make it thru someone's skin if shot with it. 12 inches isn't the ragged edge though if you have a perfect shot with no obtrusions , limbs or a wierd angles, 9 to 10 inches is probably enough.
Ammo is one reason I chose an NAA .22LR, not a .22 WMR. The WMR seems to be made of unobtainium. Fortunately I already had some of the CCI 36 grain hollow pionts - even some of the Troy Landry packaging! My rifle likes the Remington Thunderbolts, so I just keep those away from the NAA. If you can ever find any Stingers or Yellow Jackets, I would enjoy seeing your opinions of those rounds. However, talk about unobtainium!
It's nice that you mention the foot pounds 💷 of energy, there's this air rifle springer I'm looking at that puts out 30 ft lbs 💥 of energy with a.30 pellet and another that does 90 lbs that's a pre charged pneumatic and the umarex hammer 🔨 with a claiming of 700 foot pounds of of energy, that's beating 💗 my 💨 smoke pole with the same.50 caliber pellet/ bullet ( a Lee round). The Lewis and Clark expedition took along air rifles and pumps 👠 (not those kinds of pumps 👠)that took 1500 or more pumps to get six shots. They survived just fine without keeping their powder dry. Consider the black 💥 powdered version of this pistol, I'm testing one out now. I'll have to chrono one group and find out what works best with bullseye smokeless 💥 powder in one.
The smallest I’d carry would be the Black Widow with its 2” barrel & 22 mag cylinder coupled with the built up barrel useable sights loaded with 40-50 grain bullets and you’ve got an adequate belly gun. A head shot will definitely drop em right now…I consider to be a pencil diameter spear I can stab 5 holes where ever I properly aim them
I also tested these 30 grain gems in a NAA micro but mine were not hollow points they were the solid version and are also advertised at 1700fps... I got very similar results, several with very deep penetration 15-16" and a few went under 12 inches with 9 inches being the lowest. I wonder if these have powder load consistency issues... i think the ones that are going short of 12" are tumbling or yawing .... but still 16" out of a tiny 1 1/8" barrel is impressive!
It's out there, it just isn't as affordable as it used to be. Pretty much every trip to Academy yields a couple of 50-round boxes, but it's rare indeed to find a brick anymore. And there's some stuff that I just cannot find no matter what, including Stingers, Velocitors, and Yellow Jackets.
i couldn't get it at wallymart for the 8 years Obammy was in orifice, but the last few months, i can get 500-1,000 round boxes for $0.05 a pop. a Meijer store by me was quitting the ammo sales biz and I got a couple of 500 round boxes for $4.95 !!! (i still have one box with the price tag on it!)
My money is on Velocitors when you get your hands on some, Stingers actually expand (randomly) in my SR-22 pistol but comes up shorter because of that occasional expansion. Velocitors, I'm calling it ahead of time! Mick-
Out of my Ruger 10/22 the Stingers seem to do more damage but the Velocitors definitely have deeper penetration. It will be interesting to see how they do out of such a short barrel.
I shot a small mouse with that CCI "rat shot" from about a foot away once... I have no idea where he went, but I'm sure he's still pretty pissed off at me. Yeah, it's useless.
I tested a few different brands of 22lr with wet phone books. The test was nowhere near the level of your excellent test. What I found with the wet phone book medium was that the hyper velocity ammo would penetrate less that 100 pages a the bullet would be destroyed to the point of not being recognizable. Standard velocity 40 grain would penetrate up to 500 pages and the projectile would be in one piece. The stack of wet phone book pages was over 900 pages. The Anguilla Sniper Sub Sonic Aka SSS 60 grain would blow straight through all 900 pages continuing into the hard red clay at least 5 inches. The SSS 60 grain is in my opinion the best carry load. I believe the weight of the bullet is more important than velocity up to a point. I would like to see how it would perform in your gel test.
The International Wound Ballistics Association defined minimum acceptable penetration in bare, calibrated gel as 12.5 inches, 13.0 inches when the gel is draped with four layers of heavy denim.
What a great video!!! Thank you for taking the time to test all this different ammo. I do have a question: how come you didn’t test the CCI 36gr Stinger? I had assumed that this would be the best cartridge to use, but after the video I went straight to the locker and loaded up my Mini Mags :-)
I wonder if with the Aguila Supermax hyper velocity the rounds that didn't penetrate as well were tumbling? I've noticed in my personal testing I get a few tumblers here and there with this little guy.
I see that you tested the full velocity segmented. I would assume that the quiets in either the solid or segmented would be about 5 - 7" penetration or so, best reserved for pest control, or small game load.
I have your # 1 ammo the troy ones and regular 36gr hp mini mag and I have stingers & velocities they both out penetrate the mini mags in 1 gallon jugs out of my 3.5" sr22 I would think they would do
Man, I loved the review, but how about a review of CCI Stingers (a very common selection in Self Defence .22LR), or the Remington Yellow Jacket & Viper Rounds which are also very popular in the Self Defense .22LR Pocket Pistol World. The CCI SGB which is a truncated cone bullet might be interesting as well. I look forward to a NAA Test Part 2 utilizing these, or any additional rounds. Thanks for all your great videos!
Carol Witt Check the date; that video was posted in the middle of the unimaginably horrible .22lr drought. There were no Stingers to be found on Planet Earth. I still haven't gotten any Yellow Jackets or Vipers, but I did come across some Stingers, eventually I'll update the video with those results.
ShootingTheBull410 Velocitors are the best out of short barrels, stingers do not penetrate past 8", or they would be. In every other test I've seen, the velocitors are the only bullet that reliably expands ~0.31" (breaks your idea of not even hoping for expansion) and still penetrates more than 12" (usually 13.5")
im not getting but an average of under 11" of penetration and no expansion out of both stingers, velocitors or yellow jackets in my NAA mini revolver. The Agulia 30 grain supemaximum hyper velocity solid round nose has so far been my best penetrating round I've tested averaging 14" in calibrated gel tests. Ive noticed that when they get less than 12" of penetration that they have yawed or tumbled.
I got 12" into wet phone books with my black widow using velocitors and expanding .27-.31. I got 14"+ with the Winchester Hyper Speed 40gr but only .25-.28 expansion
Fantastic video i really enjoyed it. By chance do you have onr of those videos using same gun but in 22 mag? I gained some knowledge on 22 rim fires thank you
Well, that depends entirely on your intended purpose for it. If you want the tiniest revolver, the .22 Short. If you want the most powerful of the mini revolvers, maybe the 4"-barrel .22 magnum. If you want a reasonably small revolver that's a great shooter, the Black Widow. Each has a purpose, but they're by no means equally interchangeable, so -- you'd have to specify what it is you expect the revolver to do, before you could really decide which one would suit you best.
I have one of these revolvers in 22 mag. Got it as a throw in on a trade. Haven't fooled with it a lot. I wonder what those rounds would do and i may carry it as a third gun.
What in reality would require any civilian to only feel safe if he had three handguns on his person and not one or two? Frankly, I think two is ridiculous, unless you're a cop, whatever, and truly may need a backup, for they must enter the fray where a civvie should extricate themselves if possible.. learn conflict avoidance, and stop thinking a third gun is going to be necessary. It's not, unless one is paranoid. Those who think so should see a shrink with the money saved.
kathrynck Stingers weren't available anywhere at the time I did this test. I have since gotten ahold of some. From the 1 1/8" barrel, they delivered 941 fps, which makes them one of the fastest rounds I tested, on par with the 32-grain segmented hollowpoint (928 fps) but not as fast as some of the really light stuff (CCI Short-range Green, 21 grains at 1005 fps and Winchester Tin, 26 grains at 1008 fps). I don't remember the penetration figures offhand; I haven't put that test together yet, just shot some preliminary stuff. I remember them being decent performers, but I don't recall them as displacing the 36-grain Mini-Mag as my new top contender.
Ah, I see. I had read that out of a handgun the hollow points on the stingers don't open up, so they penetrate very well. But I'd like to see it done. I've never shot them into ballistic gel myself, but i have observed them penetrating substantially better on a variety of plinking targets. I had just generally considered them to be the hottest 22LR ammo. Anyway, love to see how they worked in your gel sometime. I've been finding your videos to be some of the very best on ballistic performance. You've an excellent sense of variable control and accurate data gathering, with attention to what data matters. You've already sold me on HST's in 9mm, and XTP's in .380.
Those CCI rounds will probably be pushing 14 inches of penetration out of the upcoming Iver Johnson pepperbox. You're losing one round of capacity over the NAA mini-revolver, and accuracy suffers because there are separate points of impact for each barrel. So, which is better?: five shots that are slightly weaker, or four shots that are slightly less accurate? Sounds pretty even to me.
At the start I did see that you also owned the Black Widow NAA (hopefully 22 magnum capable as well). Not sure if you did, but I cannot seem to find the video if there was. But what would your recommendation be for 22 mag ammo out of that particular pistol?
I did a series of three tests from the Black Widow in 22 Magnum. The hands-down, far and away, superbly-superior performer was the Gold Dot. Critical Defense was "okay" but the Gold Dot was great from the Black Widow. North American Arms (NAA) mini-revolver ammo test: Gold Dot 22WMR Black Widow
ShootingTheBull410 Thank you for the help! I have a very small profile and cannot have very loose clothing on my person so I have been forced to keep a very small pistol on me. After all, the one on you will always beat the one on your nightstand. So understanding that limitation I wanted to make the most of what I could. You do such amazing work, keep it up.
I'm a big fan of all your ballistic tests, but here I find myself sadly disappointed. I know you can't test every offering, but how could you not test CCI Stinger? What can I do to influence you supplementing this test? Money? lol
Look at the date it was published. That was during the massive ammo drought, where .22LR was difficult to find. Stingers were not on the market anywhere, I couldn't get 'em, so I couldn't test 'em.
@@ShootingTheBull410 Got it. After I made this post I did see where you later posted that you have now tested these. I look forward to seeing your results. FWIW, the work you are doing in terminal ballistics testing is valuable and appreciated.
1 more question (sorry): how reliable have the 22lr been in the NAA? I'd be interested in carrying one of these for just running out to the store but am wary about failed ignition. Did u have any issues like that?
Same as any other .22LR. I've had a couple of fail-to-fires, but I chalk it entirely up to the ammo. CCI has a great reputation of having the best primers, which is another reason why I think the CCI 36-gr mini-mags are a great choice for the 1"-barrel .22LR mini-revolver.
The aguila interceptors are essentially the same as the velocitors. They are actually slightly faster, and to my knowledge the most powerful (energy wise) 22 lr made.
Aim for the face, neck, joints, and groin. Not center mass. You shoot a man in the throat, spine, eyes, nose, jugular, ears, they wont be attacking. You might make the jump to .22wmr.
Must watch video for anyone with an NAA... would love to see a follow up with more ammo.
A similar video using the 22 magnum ammo would be super.
Great video, actually awesome considering it's the only TH-cam vid that specifically talks about the best .22lr ammo fro the NAA Mini Revolver......

I have your # 1 ammo the troy ones and regular 36gr hp mini mag and I have stingers & velocities they both out penetrate the mini mags in 1 gallon jugs out of my 3.5" sr22 I would think they would do
Then would you recommend .22 LR in FMJ instead of HP in these mouse guns?
Great information. Great video. What was your distance from the target? 10 or 12 feet??
+ShootingTheBull410 I would appreciate the Stinger review.
im not getting but an average of under 11" of penetration and no expansion out of both stingers, velocitors or yellow jackets in my NAA mini revolver.
Thank you so much for the videos
Why didn't you shoot CCI stingers out of the Mini revolver
Fantastic video i really enjoyed it. By chance do you have onr of those videos using same gun but in 22 mag? I gained some knowledge on 22 rim fires thank you
I'd like yo see how Velocitor does. It's even thumpier than Mini-mag.
Hey STB. Another great video. If you had to choose 1 model of the NAA mini revolver what one would you choose? I'm interested in getting one.
GREAT vid very informative thanks, I enjoyed this a lot.
no cci stinger?
it's kind of the traditional go-to choice for adding 'oomf' to a 22LR
kathrynck Stingers weren't available anywhere at the time I did this test.
Velocitors as well.
Excellent video !
FN Awesome you deserve more views
Awesome video sir thank you
That splitting ammo seems like it would be good for hunting small game with a rifle.
Great Review...Thanks
sir how's it going long time no talk. keep up the good job I'm looking in getting the north American arms 22 mag.
hey brother keep up the good work!!!!
Interesting info thank you sir.
My wife also said 6-7" penetration wasn't enough.
Has anyone had any issues shooting CCI HP 36gr mini-mags varmint. The NAA manual says NOT to use varmint ammo because of expansion and issues cycling.
Way to to do the leg work!
Please try the new Federal Punch new for 2021
any chance of seeing a 22 short test? Even in the short barreled 22lr it should be pretty close to the 22 short gun.
Great video. Thanks
Try the Remington yellow jackets
8:30 ...we don't need to know THAT... lol
outstanding. Thanks
No CCI Pentapoint Stingers?? Incomplete test
Not expecting it to do well, but what do you think would happen with a CCI copper 22?
Okay, confusion, what is the difference between the CCI Mini-Mag and the Troy Landry Mini-Mag Hollowpoint?
As far as I know it's just branding. The contents in the Troy Landry box are 36-grain CCI mini-mag hollowpoints.
I have Ben shooting federal punch at 3 feet it went throw a 2 inch treated pine bord
Thanks excellent video
1 more question (sorry): how reliable have the 22lr been in the NAA? I'd be interested in carrying one of these for just running out to the store but am wary about failed ignition. Did u have any issues like that?
Same as any other .22LR. I've had a couple of fail-to-fires, but I chalk it entirely up to the ammo. CCI has a great reputation of having the best primers, which is another reason why I think the CCI 36-gr mini-mags are a great choice for the 1"-barrel .22LR mini-revolver.
The CCI Velocitors would perform even better than the Mini Mags.
The aguila interceptors are essentially the same as the velocitors. They are actually slightly faster, and to my knowledge the most powerful (energy wise) 22 lr made.
Informative. Thanks.
Aim for the face, neck, joints, and groin. Not center mass. You shoot a man in the throat, spine, eyes, nose, jugular, ears, they wont be attacking. You might make the jump to .22wmr.
cont. I would think they would act the same out of your gun in ballistic gel.
Figured the FBI would be size queens.
